"So... you're telling me she is planning on fighting Accelerator?!"
"I-I think so…"
"The first ranked esper… what is she thinking…"
Kuroko was currently leading Touma to the bridge, where she thought that Misaka was at, with a look of worry on her face. She looked over to the boy that she was running with, he looked just as worried as her. She wondered what was going on in his head. If he truly had lost his memories, how did he become friends with Misaka, and what was their current relationship?
She shook her head, now wasn't the time to be thinking about this, they had to focus on finding Misaka. As they approached the bridge, Touma suddenly stopped and grabbed Kuroko's hand, causing her to also stop.
"Hey! What-"
"Let me do this." He said, staring her in the eyes.
"What?! She's my friend-"
"Kuroko... please…"
Kuroko saw that he had a look in his eyes, a certain glint. They stared at each other for a while, before Kuroko realized that he was still holding her hand. She quickly pulled her hand away and looked down, blushing.
"D-Do you have a plan?"
"I'm going to try to talk some sense into her."
Kuroko stared at him with wide eyes.
"A-Are you kidding! That's a terrible plan, she won't change her mind for you. What if that doesn't work out, huh?! Do you think you can beat her in a fight if it comes down to it?!"
Kuroko realized that she was getting worked up, she tried to calm down and think rationally.
"I-It's just that if something happens to you-"
She was interrupted by Touma putting his hands on her shoulders and looking her in the eyes.
"Kuroko… nothing will happen to me, I'm not going to fight her, I'm just going to talk to her."
He looked up at the sky.
"I want… this to end with everyone smiling," He looked back at her, "And I'm not going to stop until that is achieved, I promise you that."
Kuroko could only stare at him, he was essentially helping a stranger. No one would blame him if he decided to walk away from this. She once again thought about his kindness and willingness to help complete strangers, just like he had for her at the bank.
He walked away from her with a serious look on his face, and headed towards the bridge…
...towards Misaka…
…..
Misaka Mikoto was torn. She knew exactly what she had to do, but it didn't make it any less easier to do it. If she sacrificed herself, the experiments would end.
"It's just that simple…"
She remembered her mom telling her that someone won't always be there to solve her problems for her. This was a problem where there was no one that she could lean on. So instead, she leaned on the rail in front of her, and sobbed. There was no point in hiding her emotions anymore, in a few hours, it wouldn't matter.
"Help… Somebody help…" She mumbled to herself, between sobs.
It was then when she heard a pair of footsteps walking towards her. She turned to see someone unexpected, Kamijou Touma. She quickly wiped the tears off her face and put on a teasing grin.
"So, Touma, what are you doing out so late?"
"I could ask the same thing of you…" He said, a serious look on her face.
"Eh?! Why so serious? Lighten up a little-"
"Cut it out!"
She was interrupted by Touma holding up the documents for the experiments, her eyes widened. She had hidden those in her dorm room, how could he have them?
"T-That's… You… I've been found out, by him?!"
"I read about your sisters and the experiments, so let's both cut right to the chase."
She quickly replaced the look of shock on her face with a grin.
"You know, you could be a detective, but the fact that you have those means you were in my room without my permission…" She glanced at him and winked, "...I can kill you for that…"
Touma kept a serious face despite her joking. Misaka realized that her act wasn't fooling him, so she dropped it.
Sigh* "You are probably here to condemn me, huh? You think what I did was inexcusable?"
She looked at the boy with sadness, he was a person that she considered to be a close friend, but if he tried to get in the way of her goal, she was prepared to fight him. Her thoughts were interrupted by the boy speaking in a soft voice.
"What are you talking about, I'm concerned for you!"
This caused Misaka's eyes to widen, she rewinded what she had just said in her head. Her heart started beating faster and she looked away from the boy.
"I would rather not be lied to-"
"I'm telling the truth!" He yelled at her, anger in his voice.
This caused Misaka to gasp and take a step back. She was surprised by the boy's tone with her, he had always seemed so positive all the time. This was a side of him that she had never seen before. She quickly tried to get the shocked look off her face, and she looked down with a scowl.
She looked at the boy, "You know, those girls understand exactly what it means to be lab animals! Their bodies are used for experiments, then they are disposed of!
Kamijou Touma could feel the anger that was radiating off the girl, he could also see it written all over her face. She saw his eyes widen, and tried to calm down a little.
"There is another experiment going on tonight… before it happens, I'm going to go fight it out with Accelerator. I got them into this mess… so I have to be the one to fix it…" She quietly spoke out. With that, she started walking off the bridge towards where the battle was going to take place, but Kamijou blocked her exit. He stared her right in the eyes and saw a sadness in her eyes, despite her angry expression.
He closed his eyes and spoke, "Can you beat him?"
An awkward silence followed, Touma could tell that Misaka hadn't wanted him to ask her that. But he kept staring her in the eyes, and waiting for an answer.
When a response was not given he continued, "The scientists' calculations say that you will be dead in 185 moves, so I ask you again, are you really going into this fight trying to win?"
"They are right, no matter how much I do… I'm no match for him…" She said quietly, she then turned to look at him, "But what if I wasn't worth that much… what if I were to lose on the first move? Wouldn't the researchers' calculations be overturned, and they would start to doubt the project?
Kamijou's eyes widened, " Y-You... mean to die, do you? Then you think they will stop the project?"
She looked at the floor, "The researchers think that the Tree Diagrams projections are accurate, if I lose fast then it will cause them to doubt themselves."
"But once the calculations are redone, your death would be for nothing."
"Not so. The Tree Diagram was shot down a few days ago by someone, so they can't recompute it…"
There was a silence between the two, a gust of wind blew through the air. Kuroko, who was hiding nearby, couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"Misaka intends to sacrifice herself?!"
She was about to come out from hiding and confront her, when she remembered what the boy had said.
"Let me do this…"
She was worried that his words were just being reflected off her roommate. Misaka Mikoto was stubborn and her mind could not be changed easily. With a sigh, she stayed hidden and listened in on the rest of the conversation
"So, now you understand, right? Let me pass." Misaka said
There was silence.
"No way…" Misaka's eyes widened at this. "There is no way that I can let someone who wants to kill herself go…"
Misaka looked at the boy with an angry expression on her face, Kuroko was getting worried.
"So what then?! Are you trying to tell me that there is another way?! You didn't even do anything so drop the high-sounding talk and idealism, it disgusts me!"
"...Even so, I won't have it." He said with a determined look on his face.
Sparks had started flying from Misaka's head, if he wasn't going to move then, she realized that she was going to have to move him. Nothing was going to stop her from saving the clones from the horrible fate that awaited them, not even this boy.
"This isn't getting us anywhere, huh? Don't tell me that you think that just because they are clones, that it's okay for them to die, do you?!
She stared at him, hoping that those words were enough to get him to move. She was angry when the boy still blocked her.
"Very well, if you are going to stand in my way, I'll shoot right through you, if you don't want that, step aside!" She yelled at him.
The boy shook his head, electricity started flowing around the girl as she got angrier and angrier.
"I see, so you want to settle this by force, do you? Sure, I've never been able to beat you before, and I'm still not sure what kind of power you've got, but I can't afford to be beaten by you this time! So you better fight like you mean it! Otherwise…
"... you will die!"
…..
Kuroko's eyes widened when she heard this, she had never seen her roommate talk like that before. She looked at the boy who remained stone-faced, but she could have sworn that she saw him shiver.
"How can he be so brave…"
Kamijou Touma was scared, of course, but he had already decided to himself what he was going to do. While keeping his cold expression, Touma held out his arms in a way that made him look like he was surrendering.
Misaka was shocked, "W-What are you doing?!"
"I… won't fight you…" Came a whisper from the boy.
"Huh?!"
"I won't fight you."
"Are you really that dense?!" Lighting was starting to strike random areas near Kamijou Touma. "Do you think by doing that, I'm not going to do anything?! I don't have any route besides this one, so passive or not, if you get in my way, I'll shoot right through you!"
"I won't fight you…"
Misaka was enraged, "Don't screw with me! If you want to fight then clench yourfist, if not, then move out of my way! But don't trample on my wishes halfheartedly!"
The boy shook his head, and that set Misaka off.
"I'm telling you…"
She fired a strong bolt of electricity at the boy.
"...To Fight!"
The bolt connected with the boy, much to Misaka's surprise. Kuroko's eyes had widened, that was no small shock that was massive especially for the human body. She glanced at Touma who was still on the ground.
"I have to help him…"
Just as she was about to step out from her hiding spot, she heard rustling from the ground. It was Kamijou Touma, standing up and putting his hands back in the surrendering position. He was breathing hard, but he stood his ground.
"W-Why…" Misaka's voice was shaky, she knew that the boy could have negated her attack.
"I already told you… I'm not going to fight you. I-I know that the experiments are wrong… but the way you are going about trying to stop them…" He looked her in the eyes, " There is no saving you…"
"Do you think that your remaining sisters would be grateful to you for doing this? You must have realized it, right? That nobody can be saved by doing things this way."
There was a silence between them, then Misaka whispered.
"Shut up…"
She looked at him
"If I die… the sisters will feel a little relief. If one life can save 10,000, that's a good thing, right?!" Electricity was forming around Misaka, "So please, more out of the way…"
Kamijou Touma looked her right in the eyes.
"...No."
Kuroko saw what was happening, she had seen her roommate during their power testing. She was about to release an electricity bolt, 1000 times more powerful than lighting, right at Kamijou Touma. Kuroko ran out of her hiding place and started running at Touma. When running wasn't fast enough, she started teleporting.
"Touma! Run!" She yelled, but he couldn't hear her.
Misaka fired her electricity at Touma, and it struck him square in the chest, sending him flying back into a crying Kuroko. They both crashed to the ground. When Kuroko regained consciousness, she looked around and saw three things. A Misaka who was breathing hard from the overuse of her powers, cracks in the street leading in a straight line to where Touma once stood,...
And next to her laid the limp body of Kamijou Touma…"
