A Stupid Minivan

The morning I woke up, I could feel something wrong in the air. It was a sixth sense that I attributed to my magic. After all the first time I felt it, I was stabbed to death, so it had been right so far. I was sure this was when Bella was almost killed by Tyler and his stupid minivan that he was speeding in on snowy roads. I know Bella seemed just to forgive, but I was nowhere as lenient. The only downside was that I still couldn't drive my bike. I wished I used magic so he would let me ride it when I wanted.

After all, I was nearly forty years old in my mind. If you add both of my lifetimes up, not that I could tell my dad that. I checked the obelisk and saw that no vampire had tried to visit us last night, which was a comforting thought. Looking out of the window, I saw a fine layer of snow covered the yard, and the rain had frozen in the trees, making them look like ice sculptures. I looked at them, appreciating how everything looked.

I had woken up later than usual as I didn't need to walk to the Layline. As I drained it yesterday walking downstairs, I saw Bella getting some cereal and orange juice. When she saw me, she poured me a bowl and a glass. I would have wanted some cooked and warm food, but with Bella, I couldn't just magic any up without her noticing.

I ate it as quickly as I could before waiting for Bella, happy that I would be near her, so she would be safe no matter what. I expected that Edward would no doubt save her, but I wasn't leaving it to chance. We both made it outside, and I helped Bella into the truck after she nearly fell twice, which was a record as the truck was only two feet from the door.

I knew the truck would have no problem with the icy roads as dad had fit snow chains on the tires. I was thinking if I would use magic, I was sure I could do it without anyone knowing it was me. And part of me wanted to so that I had the other Cullens to talk to well, mainly Carlisle and Elizabeth as well as Alice, who would be fun to go shopping with. It had weighed on me heavily in my past life that I had to lie to everyone, and I found wanting to share it with someone. Just to have someone to bounce ideas of or talk about it to.

It was one of the reasons that I loved talking to Elizabeth about mythology well that and I just felt comfortable around her. I wasn't sure if I felt comfortable around all the vampires. After all, I had only talked to Elizabeth, and Edward seemed focused on Bella, no doubt due to her being his singer. I was careful not to make such a solid choice in case Alice saw I would have to pay another trip to La Push to make something to block her power. Then again, I wasn't even sure if she could see me, she could see the wolves or hybrids as she had no experience with them, so maybe that extended to witches.

We pulled up into school and got out of the truck, and I saw Bella walk to the back of the truck. And I followed her, knowing what was coming next and saw her lean down and look at the tires. I could see how much having an adult meant to her. I could almost see tears forming in her eyes which made me annoyed at Renée.

I heard the loud screech of the tires and saw Bella lookup. I looked up from Bella and looked at the Cullens and saw Alice with a panicked face looking toward Edward and saw the look of panic on his face looking to his left I saw Elizabeth with a confused face making me guess she couldn't read minds or didn't care if Bella and I died which seemed unlikely.

I could see Tylers van come screeching around the corner wildly out of his control due to his speeding. I could see that the van would hit Bella first before the rear end of the van would swing around and hit me. Still looking at the Cullens, I saw Edward launch himself towards Bella. I was sure if not for my magic, I wouldn't be able to see him at all.

I saw Elizabeth start to take a step forward before Jasper grabbed her alongside Rose, no doubt to stop her from making the same mistake they thought Edward was making. I saw her eyes flicker to mine before I moved my eyes back to Edward as he shot across the parking lot. I was sure they Cullens could see that I was able to track him.

I saw Edward arrive at the left side of Bella and pull her out of the way, and stopping the van with his shoulder, causing it to arc around him towards where I was in the same place he had pushed Bella. I heard her head hit the ground with a dull thud. As the van arced toward us, I heard Edward curse pulling the magic from the pendant. I cast a barrier infrount of us which the van crashed into. I could tell I didn't anywhere near the amount of magic I had put into, and the barrier had caused a ripple in the air, making Edward look around before stopping on me and widening in horror.

No doubt he knew I must have seen him appear from thin air, and unlike Bella, I had not hit my head, so he had no way to make it seem like I saw things. I cut off the magic and leaned down to Bella. Undoubtedly, his family would ask about the ripple in the air, and Edward would tell them he didn't stop the van the second time.

"Bella? Are you all right?" I asked her, worried he may have damaged her brain after all. This wasn't a book; who knows what would happen.

"I'm fine," Bella said, her voice sounding strange. I could see that Edward was just as worried, and Bella tried to sit up, which I let her.

"Be careful," Edward warned as Bella struggled to sit up. "I think you hit your head pretty hard." actually, I was sure you pushed her to the ground, and then she hit her head, but better than being squished by a van.

"Ow," Bella said, raising her hand to the left side of her head just above the ear.

"That's what I thought." His voice, amazingly, sounded like he was suppressing laughter as if Bella getting hurt would be funny. If she were bleeding, then he would have exposed his entire family.

"How in the….," Bella trailed off, trying to clear my head, get my bearings. "How did you get over here so fast?" she asked, confused, no doubt putting it together. Edward took a quick look at me before looking back at Bella.

"I was standing right next to you both, Bella," he said, his tone serious again. I couldn't help but think that was the worst attempt at lying ever. He could have said he was walking over here when he saw the truck and ran the last bit, just getting here in time. But standing right next to us, what a pointless lie that screamed, I am lying. Just change the topic if you are going to lie that badly.

I could hear everyone rushing towards us, some people screaming, others shouting for the police and medical, others calling to see if we were okay. At the same time, they crowded around us, which would not have helped if we were actually injured. I saw Bella try to stand up, but Edward pushed her shoulder back down.

"Just stay put for now," Edward asked no doubt to stop her from hurting herself due to dizziness or any injury to the head he gave her.

"But it's cold," Bella complained. As if that was a reason to get off the ground when she could be badly injured, I could help but shake my head.

"You were over there," Bella suddenly said. "You were by your car." I saw Edward take a quick glance at me. I was sure humans would have missed it, but I didn't.

His expression turned hard. "No, I wasn't," he said in a cold voice.

"I saw you, and no doubt my sister did as well," Bella said, taking a look at me before looking back at Edward. All around us was chaos. I could hear the voices of adults arriving on the scene. And the ambulance in the distance and the police siren.

"Bella, I was standing with you, and I pulled you out of the way." He said, no doubt trying to dazzle her he was in a hard place, unlike the story, he knew I must have seen what actually happened.

"No," Bella said definitely. I tuned it out, looking back over at the rest of the Cullens. I saw that Rose and Jasper were angry. Emmet seemed more resigned, and Elizabeth and Alice both seemed concerned.

"You know I would expect your family to be more worried about you nearly being hit by a two and a half-ton truck, but they seemed just angry with you for some reason," I said aloud to Edward, knowing they would hear it. I saw them all change to looking worried while taking a look at me.

"I am sure they are distraught," Edward said, exasperated.

Fortunately, given that I stopped the truck, it didn't need much moving for the EMT's to bring in the stretcher for Bella and Tyler. Both Edward and I vehemently refused. Bella tried to do the same, but Edward told them she had hit her head which made them focus on her. I was sure she was ready to die from humiliation when they bound her to the stretcher and added a neck brace. I couldn't help but snort and saw her glare at me.

I jumped in the back with her as Edward got to ride in the front. Dad arrived before they could take us away, not that I was hurt, which he seemed to have been told as he was shouting.

"Bella!" he yelled in panic when he saw her on the stretcher.

"I'm completely fine, Char — Dad," Bella sighed. "There's nothing wrong with me," she said, trying to calm him down, not that her being on a stretcher was helping that. Dad started asking the EMT for his opinion and what happened.

Naturally, the ambulance got a police escort to the county hospital. Kind of hard to tell the police chief that his daughter doesn't need one. I was sure dad had broken some traffic laws to get us there in record time. They put us both into the emergency room, which was lined with many beds. A nurse put a pressure cuff on Bella's arm and a thermometer under her tongue before noting them down and leaving. I saw Bella look around and peeled the neck brace off, and try and throw it under the bed.

"Pass it here," I told her no point in hiding it. After all, it would be clear that she wasn't wearing it. I took the brace and placed it on the bed behind me.

"I am not crazy. Edward was on the other side of the parking lot, right?" Bella asked me.

"Hmm, not sure I know he wasn't next to us, but I was busy looking at the van coming to squeeze us instead of where Edward was, and when I did see the Cullens, I didn't notice Edward there." I lied smoothly. I was sure they could hear me, and I didn't want them to flee the town as Bella seemed very happy in the end, and I didn't want to rob that from her.

This was the main reason that I have not made any significant moves or changed anything. I read in the books that Bella was happy with her life, and I didn't want to rob that from her I was sure by the time they started talking to each other again, I didn't have to worry about them skipping town.

There was another flurry of hospital works as they brought Tyler in, who I glared at. While I am not a massive fan of traffic laws, I would never speed into a school parking lot on icy roads. How stupid do you need to be?

"Bella, Maya, I'm so sorry!" Tyler started the moment he saw us.

"I'm fine, Tyler — you look awful, are you all right?" As we spoke, nurses began unwinding his soiled bandages, exposing a myriad of shallow slices all over his forehead and left cheek.

"Well, you shouldn't have been speeding, then all of this would have been avoided", I snapped at him before turning away and ignoring him.

He ignored me. "I thought I was going to kill you! I was going too fast, and I hit the ice wrong…." He winced as one nurse started dabbing at his face.

"Don't worry about it; you missed us," Bella said to him, trying to calm him down. I just wanted him to shut up.

"How did you get out of the way so fast? You were there, and then you were gone…." Tyler asked.

"Well, Edward must have been near us. He pulled Bella out of the way," I said, knowing Bella was a horrible liar.

He looked confused. "Who?" Tyler asked, not sure how he was confused. There was only one Edward in the entire school, for god's sake.

"Edward Cullen, he was standing next to me." Bella didn't sound convincing at all making me roll my eyes.

"Really, Cullen? I didn't see him at all." Tyler said, confused.

"I am sure that will be a comfort for him," I said, knowing that it would the fewer people that saw him, the better from the Cullen's standpoint.

The nurses came in and wheeled Bella away to get an X-ray. Fortunately, Tyler seems to have to the message that I don't want to talk to him. So the room settles to an uncomfortable silence. Well, I am sure it is for Tyler; I personally couldn't care less. It turns out Bella didn't even have a concussion. Bella asked if we could leave, but the nurse said she had to talk to a doctor first. So we were trapped in the ER waiting for the doctor, who I knew would be Carlisle.

I saw Edward walk in and give me a quick look, but I couldn't tell what he was thinking.

"Hey, Edward, I'm really sorry ", Tyler began.

Edward lifted a hand to stop him.

"No blood, no foul," he said, flashing his brilliant white teeth. He moved to sit on the edge of Tyler's bed, facing Bella. He smirked again.

I was sure that his family would take the whole no blood no foul comment to be false. I knew they were all panicked, and Jasper and Rose were planning on killing Bella and no doubt planning on killing me as well. Well, good luck try coming to the house, I dare you, I thought to myself. I would guess that Alice wouldn't see what would happen if they did as Edward wouldn't let it happen, so Alice would never see.

"There's nothing wrong with me at all, but they won't let me go," Bella complained. "How come you aren't strapped to a gurney like the rest of us?" Bella said, annoyed I knew she hated double standards.

"It's all about who you know," he answered. "But don't worry, I came to spring you." Well, that and you have no pulse and are as cold as a dead body hard to explain that to a nurse after all.

Dr Cullen walked in after he said that, so I guessed that it was planned. Maybe Edward was sent in to soften the blow or something. I wasn't really sure.

"So, Miss Swan," Dr Cullen said in a remarkably appealing voice, "how are you feeling?"

"Fine", Bella said, annoyed at being in hospital.

He walked to the lightboard on the wall over my head and turned it on. "Your X-rays look fine," He said. "Edward said you hit your head quite hard."

"Hmm, really, she barely hit her head at all. I was stood right next to her after all" I jumped in, making them both look at me. I wasn't going to let them plant some false story that she had brain damage or anything.

"As my sister said, I'm fine," Bella repeated with a sigh, throwing a quick scowl toward Edward.

The doctor's cool fingers probed lightly along my skull. He noticed when I winced.

"Tender?" he asked.

I heard a chuckle and looked over to see Edward's patronising smile. Yes, nice way of not drawing attention to your self idiot. You know she asked for the truth. I would have gone home and put it off for a few days, but hey, that's just me. I tuned the rest of the conversation out as I just wanted to go home at this point.

I saw Bella move over to Edwards side and whisper something to him before Edward glared and stormed off, making Bella run after him. I didn't need to follow him to know what he said, and I used a listening spell to make sure everything was the same as the book, which it was. Edward was doing nothing to hide what he did and trying to call her a crazy person. I noticed she pointed out that I had seen what happened. He just said no one would believe us.

I walked out to see dad waiting for Bella and me. He asked me how I was and said, fine, I didn't even get touched by the van at all, and Bella only got a little bump, nothing to worry about. She had tripped harder. Something that I was sure was true after seeing how often she fell over on a flat surface.

"What did the doctor say?" Dad asked as Bella walked up to us.

"Dr Cullen saw me, and he said I was fine and I could go home." Bella sighed. Mike and Jessica, and Eric were all there, beginning to converge on us. "Let's go," Bella urged.

We walked out to his cruiser and got in. Dad seemed at a loss of how to handle Bella now that he thought she was hurt. We drove in silence. Bella seemed out of it, no doubt wondering why Edward was lying and positive that his attitude confirmed the bizarre things she saw, which she was right about.

When we got to the house, dad finally spoke.

"Um… you will need to call your mum." He said and hung his head, guilty.

Bella was appalled. "You told Mom!" which even I knew what a stupid thing to do without all the facts. She would no doubt be begging for us to both come home as if a car accident was Forks fault or something.

Bella slammed the cruiser's door a little harder than necessary on her way out. Everyone else went to bed relaxed after the day leaving me staying up alone. I wasn't sure if Jasper or Rose would come to kill Bella or me, but I would make sure I was up if the defence magic I cast needed more magic.

It was a long night, but no vampire came close to the house at all. Now I just needed to see if they came to school the next day.

AN: I was tempted to add something from the Cullens point of view, but I didn't think I could add enough original stuff not to make it a copy and paste of Midnight Sun. Besides having Rose or Jasper get close enough to set off the house defence, I feel like that would scare them off, which I don't want.
