Broken Promise

"Hey are you okay?" An annoyed voice pulled Kairi from oblivion. She moaned as sensation began to return to her. At first, she realized she was lying on the cold hard ground. So, she moved to sit up, not fully awake yet. What happened?

She opened her eyes and looked around dazed. Crouching next to her was Kakashi… shrunk. Kairi was half asleep when she spoke, "Did someone leave you in the dryer for too long?"

"What's that supposed to mean?" Tiny Kakashi asked clearly annoyed. Okay, little Kakashi was not a friendly as big Kakashi, and he had… wait a minute.

Kairi rubbed her eyes, and stretched waking her up more. Only then did she realize, that tiny Kakashi wasn't a dream.

"What in the…"

"You were just lying there," tiny Kakashi said, "It's a dumb place to take a nap."

Kairi stood up and looked at the kid version of Kakashi. Kakashi was a high level Jonin who had helped her adapt to the Shinobi World when she returned, he even taught her how some water nature jutsu. Kakashi was strange, but he was kind. This kid was kind of bratty.

"Okay, I need to…" Kairi realized that they underground, "How'd I get down here and where's…" That's when it all came back to her. The mission Mukade, the blast, her and Naruto, "Where's my brother?" Kairi spotted a ladder that led to the surface and ran to it.

"Hey?" Mini Kakashi shouted, but Kairi ignored him. She climbed up the later as fast as she could until she reached a man hole. She pushed up and open and climbed into the sunlight. As Kairi stood up, she was amazed by the sight that welcomed her.

"Wow," tall towers surrounded her, they were as tall as the ones in The World That Never Was, but they looked more archaic to Kairi, "What is this place?"

"This is Loron, don't you even know where you are?" Mini Kakashi's head popped out of the ground.

Kairi looked at him in shock, "Loron? That's impossible, Loron's gone…" All that was left was the ruins.

"Did you hit your head or something?" Tiny Kakashi asked. Kairi looked around trying to think. How could she be in Loron, Loron was in ruins and Kakashi was a kid. It was like she went back in time… wait.

"Oh, don't tell me?" She whispered, "She quickly squatted down to Mini Kakashi, "Kid, how many Hokage have there been?"

"What?"

"How many Hokage, have there been?" Kairi repeated her question more forceful.

"What kind of stupid question is that? There've only been three."

Kairi felt herself go pale. That answered everything. Kairi was in the past.

She got up and started pacing, "Oh this is bad, this is really bad!" Messing with past always ends badly. Was she alone, did the others get blasted back with her? How did she get back to her time?

"Okay, don't panic," Kairi told herself quietly, "Let's see if anyone's with you."

Kairi began to focus her chakra, and began to activate her sensory ability. The city was full of people with unique chakra, but one stood out to her, "Naruto," Kairi sighed in relief. She wasn't alone, at least her brother was there.

"You're weird," Mini Kakashi's last words before he went back under ground. Kairi decided to leave him alone. If he was there, then he had a mission. Kairi decided to focus on her own, she couldn't meddle with the past anymore. Kairi began walking in the direction she sensed Naruto's chakra.

Kairi briefly wondered what mission Kakashi was on, in the past. That lead Kairi to remembering something Kakashi told her.

Your father was my sensei and the leader of my team.

That caused Kairi to stop for a moment. There had been only three Hokage, Kakashi was there. Kairi looked up at the sky when the possibility came to her; and her chest ached at the thought.

Could Dad be here? On a mission?

Kairi decided to focus on finding Naruto. She started jumping from tower to tower to cross the city towards his chakra signature. Kairi tried to figure out how this happened. Was the ley line so powerful it altered time? If only she could get a hold of Merlin, he had the power to travel through time, he could take her and Naruto home. But even before the time travel, Kairi was cut off from her friends from home and now… most of them weren't even born yet.

Kairi stopped on a rooftop at that thought. Odds were, Sora and Riku weren't born yet. Neither were Selphi, Tidus, Wakka. Nor Hayner, Pence, and Olette. Roxas, Xion, and Namine… just forget it… Kairi looked up at the sky and wondered: Where were her friends that were already born, on that day, in the past?

Was King Mickey still learning from Master Yen Sid, with Donald and Goofy supporting him? Was Aqua and Terra training under Master Eraqus, learning a new form or spell? Was poor Ven still training under Xehanort? Was Axel or rather Lea, hanging out with Isa? Where was Leon, Yuffie, and Aerith? Were they just a bunch of happy kids still on Radiant Garden?

Where was her mother on that day? Where was Kushina Uzumaki?

Kairi wanted to find them, her parents. If her father wasn't Hokage yet, then he was alive, him and her mom. She wanted to find them. She wanted to tell them that in the future they were going to have twins, but on the night, they were to be born, a man in a mask would come, and kill them both. They would be forced to seal the Nine-Tails in Naruto and put a Key-Seal on Kairi. Then Kairi would be taken to another world and the twins would live apart for sixteen years… not even knowing they were missing from each other's lives.

But she couldn't. As badly as she wanted to, she couldn't. She couldn't risk the future. For all she knew it would make it so she and Naruto would never be born.

Kairi tensed when she felt something. She looked around, she thought she was being watched. She quickly activated her sensory skill, but she didn't sense anything. No one was nearby. That didn't make Kairi relax, she learned ninjas could be very tricky.

She continued on her way. Keeping her guard up. The sensation of being watched didn't go away. However, she noticed that the city seemed deserted. No one seemed to be out. Which was weird, Kairi could sense a lot of people, where was everyone.

Kairi finally reached the area where Naruto should had been. She landed on a bridge and looked down towards a grassy area. Naruto chakra signature was nearby.

Kairi turned when the sensation of being watched, got stronger. Spotted a figure, just barely duck behind a tower.

I knew I was being watched.

Kairi summoned her Keyblade. She was just about to go after them, when she heard a crash. She looked back, to see Naruto jumping out of a glass cylinder in the grassy area. Kairi smiled in relief.

"Where am I?" Naruto asked. As he looked around, he had never seen such tall buildings in his life.

"Naruto!" Kairi quickly jumped down in front of him.

"Kairi, are you okay," Naruto said looking her over for injury.

"I'm fine, are you okay?"

"Yeah, well," Kairi needed to tell Naruto they were in the past, "We have a bit of issue."

Naruto looked up when he heard a noise, "I'll say, look!"

Kairi looked to where Naruto was pointing. Descending towards them, were more giant puppets. Flying down on, what looked like rockets. And armed to the teeth.

The three puppets surrounded the twins. Kairi and Naruto took a defensive stance. One of the wooden enemies attacked with its claws first, both Naruto and Kairi ducked. Then one of the other one's raised its arm revealing a cannon.

"Get back!" Naruto and Kairi quickly jumped into air. However, the puppets launched kunai at them.

Kairi protected them with a barrier. They landed on the bridge. Kairi quickly spotted the chakra threads.

She infused chakra into her Keyblade and threw it, cutting through the chakra threads and rendering the puppets useless.

"So they were puppets," Naruto realized.

"Yeah," Kairi nodded.

"Dammit, Mukade where are you?"

Kairi realized in that moment, Mukade could be there. In the past. He was at the center of the blast. Before Kairi could think further, Naruto jumped to another building.

"Naruto, at least wait for me!" Kairi called as she jumped after him.

Naruto ran on the bridge but was intercepted by another squad of puppets. Before Kairi could get to him, another set of puppets stopped her.

"How many of these things are there?" Naruto yelled.

Kairi didn't have time to answer, she had to jump off the bridge to dodge an attack. As she jumped through the towers, she infused her Keyblade with chakra and threw it ahead of her, "Shadow Shuriken jutsu!" Her Keyblade split into several as the embedded themselves in the buildings, and justu formula's appeared around her Keyblade. Kairi passed them, and then quickly weaved the hand signs to trigger the next jutsu, "Spider web seal!"

Just as the puppets flew past her Keyblades, the jutsu formula's shote out and ensnared them keeping them trapped in the air. That would buy Kairi time to help Naruto.

Kairi quickly went after Naruto, jumping from one building to the next. She spotted Naruto in the distance. He was on another bridge about to be attacked. Kairi threw her Keyblade, it landed next to Naruto. She quickly teleport to it, bringing her to her brother, and quickly put up a barrier as the puppet hit them with a laser.

The barrier, held but they were both, still pushed down through the bridge and through the ground.

When the smoke cleared. Kairi's barrier was gone. Kairi took a brief glance around, they were surrounded by old buildings. Was this the slums.

When Kairi tried to stand, pain shot through her leg. She collapsed again with painful grunt and cluthed her leg. Did she hurt it?

The question was answered when she saw blood running down it.

"Kairi?" Naruto quickly went next to her. He wasn't hurt, but he did look worried about her injury.

"I'm okay, I just- Look out!" The puppets had flown through the hole after them and shot more kunai.

"Kairi, stay down!" Naruto got up and blocked them all with his kunai, to defend his injured sister. But there were too many.

Naruto felt an arm suddenly grab him, and Kairi saw a man in a mask suddenly appear and grabbed her. A second later, they were on the ledge of one of the tall towers.

"Partial Expansion Jutsu!"

"Ninja Art Beetle Sphere!"

Naruto and Kairi watched as two ninja took down the platoon of puppets, no problem. Their attacks were familiar.

"I've never seen puppets like that," Naruto said.

"I don't think they qualify as puppets anymore," Kairi said, "They're more like robots."

"Seems like they're powered by chakra from the ley line." Kairi stiffened when the mask shinobi spoke, his voice sounded familiar. She looked at him and saw him pull a kunai from the wall. Kairi recognized it, the unique blade shape and the jutsu formula.

Could it be?

"And you guys?" Naruto asked, not noticing Kairi's reaction, "Who are you?"

The mask man looked at them. Kairi noticed he had spikey blonde hair; that matched Naruto's hair.

"You're from the Hidden Leaf," the masked man asked when he saw Naruto's headband.

"Yeah," Naruto said, "We both are."

Kairi just nodded.

The man lowered his mask just enough to show the Hidden Leaf symbol on his own forehead, "We're from the Hidden Leaf too," he adjusted his mask back and looked at Kairi's leg, "We really should attend to that wound of yours right away."

Kairi bristled, "I-I'm fine."

"No, you're not Kairi," Naruto said as he picked her up.

"Naruto," Kairi said embarrassed, "Put me down."

Despite Kairi's protests, they went to a safe area. The other masked ninja met up with them. Kairi remained quiet as the blonde one, wrapped bandages on her leg. She didn't dare look up, her heart was going a mile a minute.

She had a strong feeling, she knew who this ninja was, but she couldn't ask. She couldn't risk anything.

"You're a sensory type?" The blonde ninja asked as he attended her leg. Kairi just nodded, not trusting her voice.

"How'd ya know?" Naruto asked.

"We spotted her in the city and followed her," the masked man said.

Naruto glared, "Why?" He didn't like the idea of his sister being followed.

"She had a strong chakra read, one we didn't recognize," he explained, "So we tailed her. She stopped a few times and looked around, even when we masked our chakra. That's strong ability indeed."

Kairi could only blush at the compliment.

"And you're hair."

Kairi looked at him, "What about my hair?"

"It's shorter, but it reminds me of someone I know. So, I noticed it right away."

Kairi looked back down, her face burning as she remembered her mom's story. How her dad rescued her from cloud ninja after she left a trail of her red hair behind. That he 'noticed it right away because it was beautiful.'

"Hey," Naruto growled, "That's my sister."

This is torture. Kairi thought to herself.

"There that should do it," the blonde ninja finally finished tying on the bandages.

"Thank you," Kairi muttered.

"Yeah thanks," Naruto said, "But you didn't answer my question, who are you?"

"Sorry, but I can't tell you that."

"Then, can you at least tell us where we are?" Naruto asked.

"This is Loron."

"What?" Naruto asked shock. Kairi looked at her brother. Being flustered made her forget, Naruto didn't get the situation. That they were in the past.

"We don't have time to go into all the details," the masked man said, "But the short version is we're here because we have a mission to complete."

The man got up and walked towards his teammates, near the alley's entrance, "I need you both to leave the city till it's done. I can tell you more then," he pointed down the alley's entrance, "Look you can find the main gate if you turn left there," he looked back at them before continuing, "Okay, do I have your promise?"

Kairi gripped her skirt when he said that. She wanted to agree so bad, just because he said that, but she knew she couldn't. They had to find out what was going on, it was the only way to get back home.

"But-…" Naruto tried to answer, but the three ninja flickered away.

Naruto helped Kairi stand.

"We can't leave yet," Kairi confirmed.

"Yeah, we have our own mission."
