Chapter 3
April has finally got into the swing of things again and Emily has gotten back to some form of schedule that they both can work on with almost hourly checkins if possible. Lately she had been woking on cases that were reminding her of the women she killed, and that sick awful feeling she would get and really been a great help but her anxiety around him hasn't lifted and the fact he has the full capability to fire her and to say she has been trying really hard to stay on his good side it was an understatement, apparently she looked like some love sick fool which was the last thing she wanted especially in front of Meredith honestly love, romance all that hasn't been part of her life in a long time, after Johnathan hell after giving birth to Emily she went a couple dates with a couple guys but nothing ever came out of it and not to blame Emily but a women in her early 20 with a toddler wasn't someone most women date at that age so she eventually let it go, career was mostly what she was after and making her daughter happy so, she smiled, she batted her eyes made herself seem like this…person that needed and the Hospital needed because she can't lose this job, not now but it seems that method has backfired on her.
"He's my sister brother!" Lexie yelled behind her, April just walked out of the office with and his patients husband Gary Clark, the case was gut wrenching and she could tell just wanted to hold on and it was hard to watch and she needed out to breathe and out came Lexie and honestly April was still slightly mad about the notebook situation.
"What are you talking about? I know is wife" April said questioningly
"Then why are you doing that?" Lexie exclaimed
"Doing what?!" April questioned but interrupted Lexie before she could say anything
"Look please Lexie just give me a minute I just need a minute" Lexie shut her mouth and silently fumed but even she noticed how distraught April was about this case and she stomped off exclaiming how she hated this day.
Ever since that moment April has acutely noticed that people were staring at her for a different reason, even her fellow Mercy West resident and that when she realized her…methods of trying to keep to Derek good side might have worked on him but to the other residents and general staff she looked like some lovesick puppy but she needed confirmation of her hypothesis so she looked for the one person she knows wouldn't pry away from the truth, Alex Karev.
Honestly Alex Karev was annoyed he just got screwed over by Lexie today and he needed a drink a real genuine drink. He was headed home when he heard a familiar high pitch call from behind him
"ALEX" he tried to ignore it but she kept yelling when he finally snapped
"WHAT. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT" April seemed to freeze with her eyes wide
"Wow sorry didn't realize I caught you at the wrong time" Alex glared at her
"Seriously Kepner just go back to batting your eyes at Shepherd I'm sure he'll enjoy it more" and that didn't seem to phase her which is surprising to him since she gets well offended easily
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about do I look like I have a crush on ?" That seems to surprise him
"What?" April now looked annoyed
"Well do I or not?" Alex now looked at her questioningly but answered
"Ya"
"Fuck…shit" now that really surprised Alex because Kepner never swore, like ever, this was probably the first time he has heard her swear the entire time he knew her and she did it twice but before he can even ask her about it April looked at her phone and ran off to her car.
"Thanks Alex I'll see you at work" he just stared at the figure running off kind of confused but he was already annoyed by the day he had so he just went home
He finally had his beer and Lexie grew some balls against him which was hot in its own right but of his thoughts kept going back to Kepner and her very un-Kepner like behaviour he should leave it alone, Kepner was her own brand of crazy and frankly Alex was really done with crazy. When finally both Shepherd and Meredith finally came home Shepherd making his way up his room while Meredith bee lined towards his room and flopping down on his bed.
"So the weirdest thing happened" Meredith started Alex looked at her questioningly
"Kepner-" and Alex interrupted her
"Kepner? I swear she went home" Meredith gave him a questioning look of her own before continuing
"Well whether you know she did or didn't she came up to me asked to talk to me alone and then apologized about the whole Derek and her crush thing apparently we all got it wrong and she never actually got a crush just did what she could to keep her job" Meredith said sounding astonished, Alex as well at first he really thought she was just trying to save face but to go to this length to say she does not have a schoolgirl crush on Derek he is willing to believe it. He even explained that to Meredith who also looked surprised.
"Does that girl not realize how she looks?" Meredith questioned but Alex just shrugged whatever honestly Kepner was a wild card, she was out shining Lexie one day then fired the next then re-hired it was a lot. Her friend was hot and Avery and Percy were cool outside of trying to steal his surgeries. Meredith left and he actually went to sleep for the night.
Alex really didn't think about the Kepner for at least another week or so not until the Bobby Corso case, she was sitting there during the skills lab a bit off form the rest of the group but still their and it was the first time he really looked at her and sure she was pretty in a sort of country bumpkin kind of way but he just wasn't interested at the moment and Izzie just sent in the divorce papers but people all around were cracking jokes and then he came in. The biggest man he has ever seen in his life, and he couldn't crack a single joke which was hard for him but he made it him and Kepner which was honestly a surprise all on its own but the whole situation with the wife and the baby just soured his mood so he decided to grab his food and finish in an on-call room when he entered he heard
"Ya ill try to grab some on my way home….yup…alright bye" It was Kepner on her phone as she put it away and looked up at him and simple waved before laying herself down on the bed
"Do they need us?" Alex just shook his head and headed towards the bed opposite of herald ate, and thought about Izzie the divorce, about Lexie and about his patient he apparently was thinking for maybe too long when he heard
"Y'know your thinking really loudly" Alex glared at her
"Shut up" April in turn chuckled somewhat tiredly at him which he was surprised about but he snorted as well this entire day was a drag in its own right.
"What is it?" April questioned, Alex just looked at her, he was going to tell her to mind her own business but instead he asked
"Why did you ask me?" Was what came out of his mouth April just made a sound inquiring for more info
"About the Shepherd thing why me?" She seemed to have finally understood him
"You were the only one I knew that wouldn't bs the answer, Cristina doesn't care enough to even talk to me, Meredith is Meredith I don't think she particularly likes me also it would be awkward to ask her, Lexie was avoiding me due to the situation, Reed as much as I love her it takes awhile for her to give a straight answer and I wasn't mentally ready for Jackson and Percy answers so I went with you. You Karev don't bullshit anyone unless you don't want to be ass whooped and you don't think I can whoop your ass so I know you wouldn't bs me so I went with you" she said straight to him and Alex seemed to have stared in somewhat astonishment which caused her to roll her eyes "Honestly I blame the whole notebook situation and me being fired and re-hired you guys kind of dance around me like I need extra care but then make fun of me behind my back like we are teenagers" Alex did look a little guilty at that but it seemed to have just caused April to chuckle, it was a nice sound her laugh
"What going on with you?"
"Hm?" April gave him a look that just screamed 'really?'
"Usually you eat your food and then go to sleep today your staring at the ceiling and made your thoughts so loud even I can hear so what going on with you?" April inquired and honestly Alex wasn't going to answer her but he felt it could possibly help
"Izzie sent me divorce papers…" "Oh" "yup" their was an awkward silence then she said
"I don't know whether to say I'm sorry or congratulations" That caused Alex to laugh in surprise at her statement she just stared at him
"What? Almost 50% of marriages in the US end in divorce, why do you think being a divorce lawyer is such a lucrative business" she said a matter of fact and it caused Alex to really laugh because honestly he wasn't expecting that kind of answer from Kepner but as their laughter died down their was a comfortable silence
" So what? Do you regret the divorce? Or have you got regrets from the contract in the divorce?" April questioned "cuz if its the contract bit I can read it and give my opinion" now Alex looked at her "Are you divorced?" she just gave a quick hah then simple shook her head no " I'm just used to reading lawyer jargon so if you want I can sift through see If their is anything fishy" April did a dramatic little thing with her hands which caused him to chuckle and proceeded
"Y'know what sure look through the contract, I barely glanced at it" Alex handed her the contract and she immediately started reading it fully concentrated with a pen out.
"What else?" April asked and Alex looked at her in confusion
"If this was just about the contract you would have went to sleep right now as I read this so what else? Spill unless its too personal to share" April said and Alex looked at her in some surprise, people don't really notice his behaviour and those that do tend to have known him longer then April Kepner has and he definitely wouldn't spill but at this moment in this room he just needed to spill all his thoughts.
"There is history for me and Izzie, a lot of history I fell in love with her and got married to her, she died in my arms…and then she left, just up and left. I was mad and upset and all these other emotions, don't get me wrong a large part of me is ready for this divorce but a small part of me-"
"-is thinking you might be wrong?" April finished up for him and he nodded. All he could think about is him making a mistake, what if she was the love of his life would he have just threw that all away? April seemed to have paused reading and said
"I don't know Izzie…she was barely talked to her when I joined and when I fired then re-hired I never saw her so I can't speak for her, hell Alex I can barely speak for you but I will ask you does that small part of you see yourself being happy with your life with Izzie and does that small probability of happiness out way what you want? What type of future you want to lead?" April is looking at Alex in the eye as if she is trying to read him "We don't know things in the future we just predict them and in your heart can you predict a lifetime of happiness with Isobel Stevens on that small probability of you being wrong or is the pain pf the relationship easier to predict?" To say Alex was surprised by the advice April gave was an understatement but it was good advice, that small probability of being wrong did not outweigh the fact that his relationship with Izzie was not working out as he hoped and as she hoped, they both had expectation that they couldn't meet and it caused them both pain. Alex knew in his heart he would always love Izzie in some way but marrying her, being in a committed relationship with her…that ship has sailed.
"Well-" that brought him out go his daze "the divorce contract mostly looked looked but their is one thing you should probably look at if your signing this" Alex looked confused and she brought the paper over to him ad pointed to the area she rounded in pen.
"Here it states that Izzie froze two type of her eggs ones fertilized and ones that weren't fertilized and if you sign this paper you would giving Izzie full reign over both types which means-"
"-If Izzie wanted too she could have my babies without telling me" April nodded but continued "You would essentially relinquish your rights as a parent and your consent to father a child with Isobel Stevens… and personal opinion here if I was Izzie I would go with the fertilized ones survival rate and incubation time is higher so I can wait longer and more likely to conceive so honestly I don't know about Izzie but she might fight for that" Alex nodded along guess he really did need to see a lawyer April then wrote down number and handed to him.
"I actually do know a divorce lawyer she is a friend of mines if you need one talk to her, her rates are reasonable as is" Alex was about to thank her when they both got paged for the Bobby case and they both went back to being surgical residents not even talking about what happened in the on-call room but he did call the lawyer. The entire fix took about 2 weeks to do which was faster then the lawyer thought but it seemed Izzie didn't put up much of a fight involving the situation so by the end of the second week Alex signed the amended papers, officially ending the relationship of both Isobel Stevens and Alex Karev.
