Thank you to Hummingbird7 for the idea prompt!
Surely on the wrong side of recklessness, Liam Angelus, known to most as Angel, dug his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket and went just enough out of his way to cross by another popular cemetery in the small little town known as Sunnydale. He wasn't about to brave going beyond the sidewalk here if fate could help it but nevertheless he couldn't resist an attempt at trying to spot a certain girl who seemed to be one with all things that went bump in the night.
Nearing the edge of the road he had about given up hope that she was here, or at least in view from where he was walking if nothing else, but suddenly there she was.
Angel paused, letting his eyes settled on her a little better, smirking at the sight. Buffy, as he'd only recently found out her name to be, looked completely bored out of her mind, sitting on top of one of the larger headstones, picking at her nails all while holding a wooden weapon in her palm. Like most times he'd happened to catch a glimpse of her she was donning a short dress and knee high boots that never seemed to be proper attire for whatever she was doing... not that he was in a position to judge.
For all he knew it was exactly what she was supposed to be wearing, it just seemed a little odd as an outsider looking in anyway...
Looking over her shoulder, she grew more animated as she continued speaking to the older man with glasses she often seemed to be out here with. He briefly wondered if she enjoyed this more... the quiet, the waiting, the boredom... or if she enjoyed the other side of things he'd seen her in the middle of, the knock out drag out fights with creatures of all colors, former humans with bumped up faces and sharp teeth, and anything in between and spacing outward from there. He couldn't imagine it being fun putting your life on the line like that but boy she sure seemed to be cranky when she had a slow night thrown her way.
Angel didn't know much about her to be honest, he only knew her name even because he heard it being shouted out once. He couldn't deny spending way too much time and energy on trying to figure her out from afar though.
He'd lived in Sunnydale since his junior year in high school and unlike most people in this damn town he had never exactly been able to pretend his memory was wiped from all the weird shit that happened, or to turn some sort of blind eye to it all. For awhile he almost could, more than anything had decided he must be crazy or something, but that only lasted so long and before he knew it he had to admit something was more than a little wrong with this sleepy little nowhere town. Things just didn't add up like they were supposed to... not that he knew what to do with that information... especially when everyone around you wanted to act straight up oblivious.
Then suddenly things seemed to get worse and next thing he knew he stumbled near to where she was dusting the shit out of some, well, they had to be vampires is all he had, and another one of those weird curves seemed to happen. Every now and then he would catch her dealing with something otherwise unexplainable and she sure could in fact handle whatever seemed to be thrown at her ass. He had no idea if she was some sort of secret warrior, though that was his top guess with how strong she seemed to be, just happened to have become a soldier in the good fight against the darkness or what but he knew she had to be playing some big role in things going on around here.
Every now and then he'd catch a glimpse of her running out of The Bronze with Willow and her other friend Xander, or throwing hands in a alleyway, or hanging out in one of Sunnydale's many graveyards but he hadn't had any actual interaction with her but she lived pretty rent free in his head all the same.
He wondered a lot where she had come from, why a teen was out here fighting monsters, what she did outside of sneaking around at night fighting ghosts and goblins and hoped one day he might have a chance to get some answers there. But for now, he waited a ew more minutes in the shadows watching her from afar before continuing on his way to meet up with his friends to kick off the long weekend ahead.
