Alice sat under the darkened stormy sky, rain pouring down on her mercilessly as her heart shattered into thousands of pieces, her body smeared with mud, stained into her skin as she sat unmoved, the weight of her grief crushing her. She hated this feeling, she loathed it, this endless emptiness which now consumed her life. Wishing she could remove it, discard it, anything to make the heartache stop. Why had she ever opened her heart to someone, let them in and blindly believed their fairytale family would persist? That she could have such a happiness, that she would ever be anything more than alone? Her tears were masked by the heavy rain, sobbing loudly as her mind buzzed with the memories of betrayal, wishing for the world to know her pain. Reminding them of her feelings, of her humanity, her soul. Her uniform soaked, her hair becoming rats tails, but she ignored it, unfocused by the storm, her hands clawed into the dirt, gripping the ground like a lifeline.

Her eyes were puffy and red from crying so heavily, her throat raw and sore, screaming into the night, as if some heavenly being would hear her call and fix her troubles. Her heart was filled with rage, confusion and bitterness, trying to understand. Why had this happened? What had she done wrong? How could Amelia be so ungrateful? Her glasses cast aside, her green eyes so wide and feral, her hair clung to her back and face, loose and flowing. Everything had changed, nothing was the same and nothing could be done to fix it, this was her life now. Cast aside was her girlish, playful persona, here was the real England, older, broken, a woman. The sweet nursing playful woman who dressed like she was from wonderland, living in a dream of a pretty garden, tea and cakes. But the lonely, heartbroken, angry punk who was always fighting her own battles. Fighting for the life she built and constantly trying to keep it. Adorning her red military coat, her white ruffle blouse, black skirt and black boots, a broken soldier.

She had loved Amelia, her first child, having found her alone in the wilderness, adopting her and raising her as her own, becoming her family. She had taught her to read, sang her lullabies and taught her of the world. But in the end, her kindness was repaid with betrayal, choosing France over her loyalty, she betrayed her by becoming allies with France. The ungrateful shit that she was, how could she do this? She gave Amelia a home, welcomed her with loving arms, she gave her shelter, food, a decent education and endless love. But she grew distant before abandoning her without warning, stabbing her in the back. Then simply stating she wanted independence, that she no longer needed England, cutting her off and acting as though she never existed.

Suddenly, amongst the sound of the rain, she heard footsteps approaching, but she paid it no mind, they could come, she would never notice. Maddie appeared behind Alice, solemnly, her long orangey golden blonde hair flowing to her elbows in angelic waves, her violet eyes were cold, hardened and yet carried gentle tenderness and understanding. Wearing the same military uniform as England. She had fought alongside England in battle, acting as her tactical advantage, having been trained by Prussia alongside America, only she too had lessons from England and Scotland. She had held her own against America and fought back fiercely. Protecting England from the blows of her sister, until she was one of the last ones standing. America knew Maddie chose England over her, they were sisters but their paths had diverted. She knew America may not speak to her again for centuries and she didn't care "You're gonna get sick out here England" Maddie responded.

"What does it matter? I've lost everything!" Alice sobbed, she had nothing of value, nothing of worth, she had lost all respect and she was right back where she started. The black sheep of Europe was a bigger joke than ever. She knew France would mock her for this loss, rubbing it in her face for centuries to come.

Maddie softened, she was not to blame for these events, she had fought for a cause she believed in and nobody could have predicted the outcome. She had always known Amelia was growing stronger and bigger, craving her own space, her place, her own life. But she had abandoned England and gone behind her back, creating an ally-ship with France. Turning to Maddie's father, England's ex-lover for help. But she had stayed by England's side, unwavering, she had always cared for England because she was the only person to remember her. She saw her value and potential when nobody else did "No maple, you lost her" she responded.

England's eyes welled up with fresh tears, dripping down her cheeks onto her hands, biting her lip as she clenched her teeth. She hated that Maddie was right, that she spoke the truth as much as she didn't want to hear it. "She left me! They always leave me! Nobody cares, nobody wants me! I'm just a joke" she sobbed, it was the same ending no matter who she opened her heart to. She was always destined to have her heart broken, she had always been looked down upon, always mocked by every other nation. She had to fight to earn their respect, to grow strong, to prove her worth. But in the end she was seen as a pathetic tantruming child by everyone around her.

Maddie stiffened, she hated to hear this, England believing she wasn't worthy or deserving of love, that everyone hated her. Rage pouring through her, she had always admired England, ever since she was a young girl. She loved her immensely, affection blossoming in her heart, a strong, capable and intelligent woman. She knelt to wrap her arms around Alice, hugging her tightly, fighting back her tears, surprising Alice with the gesture. She stared Alice in the eye, glaring at her, she wouldn't listen to England berating herself due to her sister. Amelia had placed this seed of doubt in her mind and corrupted her. But she would heal the broken heart she had caused with her selfishness. "Ça suffit! You are more than this Angleterre!" Maddie yelled bitterly. England stiffened, Canada was usually so mild-mannered and focused, she had never seen her so angry. "Amelia outgrew you, she outgrew being a leech! She wanted to stand alone, without her you no longer have her weight dragging you down. She chose papa and that was her choice to make. She chose to side with your enemy" she snapped. Amelia had always been too big for her shoes, she had always needed to the best, the most popular. She was spoiled and selfish, nothing was ever enough. Now she had everything she ever wanted but at what cost. Alice whimpered, she knew Maddie was right, she knew her words rang true.

"I know it hurts Maple, you feel lost, bitter, angry, embrace that. You fought and you lost, but don't stumble now. She's hurt you, embrace that hurt, because I'm here and so is uncle Scotty, and I won't abandon you" Maddie pressed. This pain she was feeling was expected, she was right to feel this way and nobody would hold that against her. She'd fought to protect the family she had forged and America betraying her. But she wasn't as alone as she believed herself to be, she needed to remember that, she wouldn't leave her as America did, she wouldn't hurt her like that. Alice's eyes widened in shock, softening as the words filled her mind, Maddie wouldn't leave, she promised. The same curly-haired child with violet eyes who was shy and awkward, always hiding behind her skirts, was now the strong, confident, intellectual woman who stood by her side and protected her. She threw herself at Maddie, wrapping her arms around her neck as she sobbed on her chest.

She was still here

She was still by her side

She was still loyal to her

Maddie tightened her grip on England, feeling her walls crumble and truly allowing Maddie in, showing her the hurt and the heartache, the wounds she had hidden all this time. Stroking her hair and rubbing her back tenderly "Je t'aime England" she mumbled. She had loved England for a long time, she couldn't recall when it started but it had always been there. Since the day they had met, harbouring jealousy towards her sister for constantly stealing England's attention. Now she had Alice all to herself, she would never let her go and she would never let her be hurt like this again. Amelia couldn't hurt her anymore, she would never darken her doorway or poison her life again. Cupping England's head.

Scotland approached the pair silently, overhearing England's sobs and screams. His silver earrings shining in the lamplight, his piercing green eyes pained, watching his sister and his niece. He hated seeing his family torn apart like this, England was still crying, the tears wouldn't stop, he wouldn't forgive France for this, nor America. For hurting his sister so cruelly, she broke her heart, smashing it like fine china, crushing it beneath her boot and simply walking away from the chaos she had created. But he could see how much Canada loved England, how much England trusted Canada, the red string of fate that bound them together. They had a strong bond, one that surpassed even France, Canada would be the one to nurture England back to health, to regain her strength. She knew Canada harboured affection for England, a romantic love that had formed from her youth into her adulthood. Canada scooped England into her arms, carrying her back to the tents where she would be safe. She was soaked to the bone, but she resembled an adult, a woman, strong, fierce, standing on her own feet, fighting for England.

Canada paced around the tent as she left England to warm up in her bath, preparing some tea for herself, England and Scotland, she dried the rain from her hair with a nearby towel, sighing heavily in frustration. It had been a long day, a long month, a long year, she had lost track of time and where exactly they stood on the timeline. Everything had become a blur and only now was reality becoming normal again.

"A didnae ken ye were sae fond a' mah sister" Scotland responded casually, that burning heated look, it was one of love, he knew it all too well.

Maddie stiffened, she had believed it would remain a secret, that she would just watch England from afar until she noticed. England knew Canada cared for her but never how much. Hopefully after today, she had conveyed her feelings and allowing Alice to realise their depth. France had been too blind to notice and America was oblivious, of course, Scotland of all people would notice "I've loved her since I was young, I always have" she responded coldly. She wouldn't let anyone take England from her, she would never let anyone take away her happiness.

Scotland reached out to squeeze Maddie's shoulder, her actions spoke louder than words, every gesture had love behind it. England was his baby sister, they may not have always gotten along, but he protected his family. He would make sure she got through this, that she recovered and she came back stronger. But she deserved love, someone who was good for her, he knew she would be happy with Canada. "A ken ye'll tak care o' her" he soothed, Alice needed Maddie now more than ever, she was once France's colony, but now she was England's. Maddie had always been more like England than America, sure Amelia could be oblivious and short tempered like Alice, but she behaved like France. Maddie appeared like France and she had her dialect and accent at times, but her temper, her punk passive aggression and fighting technique. It was like looking into a mirror.

Maddie smiled warmly, it meant a lot to know that Scotland supported her, trusted her "I'll always be there, I won't abandon her" she hummed. Come hell or high water, she would always be by her side.
