First ever Merlin fanfic, here it goes...
Summary: Set somewhere, I don't know (because I never did finish watching the show). Alright so Gwen is the Queen, Lancelot is dead, Freya survived, and she and Merlin are married.
Morgana decides that she is tired of looking for Emrys. She burns down Ealdor and all its people, except Hunith, taking her as a hostage. She then arrives to Camelot, and tries to make a deal with Merlin and Arthur. But she makes a big mistake.
When Merlin realizes what actually happened at Ealdor, he forgets all about hiding who he is. There is nothing for him to lose, and he no longer cares about destiny.
(Merlin)
He awoke with a gasp. There wasn't much he remembered from his dream, except blood, smoke, and screams. There was no reason dwelling on it, he was not a seer.
Slowly sitting up, he could already smell whatever Gaius was cooking for Breakfast. He stood up and dressed himself in his usual clothes.
Looking outside the window he realized he would have to eat later, or he'd be late with the Prat's breakfast. He then remembered that he now also had to bring breakfast for Gwen, even if she insisted that he didn't have to. Unlike for Arthur, he was happy to bring Gwen breakfast. She always managed to cheer him up, even when Arthur's petty insults failed.
He ran out of his room, waved at Gaius who was trying to tell him something about some potion he had to bring somewhere, and ran all through the castle to get to the kitchens and then The King's chambers.
Knowing that Gwen was with Arthur, he knocked on the door, which was almost immediately opened by Gwen. He smiled joyfully as she let him through.
He walked through with the food and placed the plates on the table. Arthur was already sitting at the table reading some reports. It seemed that, as an early riser, Gwen managed to wake up Arthur earlier than usual.
The King glanced up at him and put his reports down.
"I see you overslept again."
Gwen slapped Arthur playfully on the arm as she sat beside him.
"He is actually on time. I have woken you earlier than usual."
Arthur smiled at his wife and then turned to Merlin with a slight smirk.
"Well then I suppose you can skip the mucking out the stables. But you still have to sharpen my sword, polish my armor, and clean my boots."
Merlin huffed slightly as he poured the King and Queen drinks.
"I did that yesterday before going to sleep, as you told me to do, you Prat. Or maybe you're starting to lose your memory?"
A moment later a napkin found its way to Merlin's face, he didn't even have time to duck.
He bit his lip and then reached to pick up the napkin.
Gwen giggled slightly at the sight of their short exchange, which made Arthur glare slightly at her.
"Fine then Idiot. Go help Gaius with something. I'm sure he needs your help. Even though I'm not sure how you can actually be useful with your clumsiness."
Merlin scoffed and turned around to leave.
Before leaving the room he sent one last glance in their direction and smiled.
This could have been him and Freya right now, if not for the stupid Destiny. If only Arthur could go one day without someone trying to kill him. And if only Arthur could give him a week off. He could spend a few days with his wife.
Unfortunately Arthur, or anyone else except for Gaius and his mother, didn't even know Merlin had a wife.
Gwen had promised Merlin that he would get a week to go visit Hunith. She said it could be any week he chose. So now he was waiting for the perfect time to take a week off.
Freya was pregnant, and she asked him to be there for the birth. So until then, he would have to wait.
He has considered telling Gwen about Freya, but he didn't wish to put her into a position where she would have to lie to Arthur.
There were also the knights. Lancelot was the only one who knew about him and Freya. He was the only other person invited to their wedding by Avalon's shores. But Lancelot was dead. And there was once again no one who truly knew who he was.
Of course Mordred was there, who knew about his magic. But Mordred only saw Emrys in him. He only saw the "God", the almighty Warlock, who would save magic, and protect Arthur Pendragon. Mordred didn't know Merlin, the simple village boy, who simply wished for peace and quiet, and to live far away with a family
He walked all the way back to the Physician's rooms, and enjoyed his breakfast, even if it was already getting cold.
The sun was shining bright outside, Arthur and the Knights would most likely head out for a small hunt, or a picnic with Gwen. Whichever option it was, it was supposed to be a quiet day.
But before Merlin could even return to Arthur's chambers, the sky began turning gray. It wasn't clouds, it wasn't rain, and it wasn't a storm.
The moment the grey skies closed in over Camelot, chaos began.
It wasn't rain falling down onto the stone roads, but ashes.
Smoke covered the streets as ashes kept falling down from the sky. The people of Camelot hid in their homes and waited for whatever it was to pass.
But Merlin knew exactly what it was.
Magic.
Most importantly it was Morgana's magic.
He and Gaius both headed towards the Throne Room where Arthur gathered all the knights.
Upon entering, Arthur immediately walked towards Gaius, leaving his throne empty.
"Gaius! What is happening? What is with all the ashes? What kind of sorcery is this?"
Gaius let out a heavy breath.
"I'm afraid this is Morgana."
Arthur immediately dropped his shoulders and looked even angrier than before.
"Are you sure this is Morgana?"
Before Gaius could even form words, they heard a familiar voice from behind.
Everyone in the Throne Room recognized the voice, the knights drew their swords, Merlin got ready to cast a protective spell, and Arthur simply froze.
Merlin watched from behind the corner as Arthur turned around, but before he could even lift his sword, Morgana put her hand up, and the King went flying into the wall. The next moment, a few dozen men in dark cloaks appeared all around the Throne Room. Everyone else was frozen with an invisible force holding them. Except for Merlin. But he pretended to be frozen for the sake of his secret not being revealed.
Arthur was picked up by two men and carried over to Morgana, and forced to kneel. Gwen was also taken and pulled near Morgana by one of her men, who placed a dagger by her neck.
Arthur's eyes kept running through the room, from his knights, to Morgana, to Gwen.
Morgana reached and took the crown off her brother's head, and placed it upon her own with a cruel smirk.
She sat down back on the Throne and leaned back.
"Now it begins..."
