I choose you, Chapter 122!
The Reading
Yamaguchi's head spun as his vision came back to him. He hadn't a clue how long he had been out. His body was still heavy and his mind still quite open. He felt like he was experiencing some sort of twilight sleep. His consciousness was aware but his body was unmoving. He could hear Sakusa mumbling beside him, the sound of pen on paper scratching away.
Yamaguchi's mind was foggy. It was hard for him to focus on any one thing. The sound of Sakusa's pen, the humming Sakusa made when he discovered something and the sound of someone, perhaps Sakusa himself, moving around the room. Yamaguchi wondered just how much time was passing as he lay here unmoving.
"Stop thinking!" Sakusa snapped.
Yamaguchi would have given a small jump if he had been able to.
"Focus on the stars above and keep your mind empty!" Sakusa demanded.
Yamaguchi did as he was told. He focused on the stars projected above him. His eyes landed on a rather large star that shimmered just over his head. He could feel thoughts creeping up on him as he zoned in on the star and did his best to push them back.
"Yes, just as I thought," Yamaguchi heard Sakusa mumble. He did his best to keep his focus on the star despite the curious comment. "Something with an immense amount of psychic power has attached itself to you…. But there seems to be something else."
Yamaguchi's curiosity peaked but he did well to keep it in check. He didn't want to ruin Sakusa's assessment now. He just seemed to have broken through. He must have been doing a good enough job because Sakusa didn't scold him to empty his mind.
Yamaguchi lay as quietly as he could as Sakusa did his work. As the minutes passed the feeling in his legs returned to him. His mind became less clouded and his thoughts harder to fight away. Before he knew it Sakusa had stopped taking notes.
"We are finished," Sakusa said. "You can sit up now."
Yamaguchi gave a nod as he sat himself up, swinging his leg over the edge of the table. Upon doing so the room spun once more causing him to almost tumble off the bed. But to his surprise Sakusa stopped him from falling.
"Thanks," Yamaguchi mumbled as he unintentionally leaned against Sakusa.
"The procedure leaves you dizzy but you should feel better soon," Sakusa explained as he helped Yamagchi steady himself. He seemed a lot less stern than before.
Once Yamaguchi was steady Sakusa stepped back. "I'm going to go grab us something to drink while you sober up. When I get back I can inform you of what I found."
Still feeling dizzy and a bit nauseous, Yamaguchi nodded. Sakusa left the room and almost immediately Sylveon leaped up onto the bed and rested her head in Yamaguchi's lap. She gave a small purr as Yamaguchi scratched her behind the ear. Her calming energy helped ease his nausea.
It wasn't long before Sakusa returned with a teapot and two mugs. He quickly cleared off two spots at a table in the room and placed the cups on either side of the table. He rummaged around for some paper before approaching Yamaguchi once more.
"Are you feeling better?" Sakusa asked.
"A little," Yamaguchi nodded. The room had stopped spinning but he still felt a bit weak. It was similar to the way one feels when experiencing mild heat stroke.
"Do you think you can make it to the table?" Sakusa asked next.
Yamaguchi hadn't a clue but nodded anyway. Sakusa helped him to his feet. He was a bit wobbly but he didn't feel as dizzy anymore. Once at the table Sakusa served him some tea before taking a seat across from him.
Yamaguchi took a few sips of the tea and his body began to feel much better. "What kind of tea is this?" he asked.
"It's a Pecha Berry Black tea. It's meant to help people who are recovering from paralysis," Sakusa explained as he took a sip from his own mug.
"W-was I paralysed just now?" Yamaguchi asked, his voice a little high.
Sakusa didn't reply. He just gave a small shrug before changing the subject. "I don't have all day so let's go over what I discovered."
Yamaguchi felt himself become anxious. He was both so desperate for answers yet fearful to the truth. He knew whatever he heard from Sakusa now would probably affect him later. "I'm ready so please tell me," Yamaguchi replied after only a moment's hesitation.
"Kuroo tells me you have been experiencing strange dreams and you wondered if perhaps a psychic pokemon was the cause of it?" Sakusa asked.
"Th-Thats correct…" Yamaguchi reluctantly replied. "Were we correct in assuming that?"
"Before I can give you my assessment I need you to tell me what those dreams have been about?" Sakusa said, looking quite serious.
Yamaguchi wasn't exactly sure how much Kuroo had told Sakusa. Yamaguchi was afraid to really admit what he thought was going on. He didn't want to sound crazy but at the same time he wondered if being honest with Sakusa was the best. The worst is that it really is just a wild pokemon and he was just being paranoid. Sakusa wouldn't judge him if that were the case, right?
"Well, in the dreams I am usually locked in a cage with someone else but I can't see who it is but I know they are there because I can hear them," Yamaguchi explained.
Sakusa hummed thoughtfully . "What does the other thing in the cage want from you?"
"For me to save them," Yamguchi said. "They said I am the only person they know. That we are friends or something like that."
"It is much easier for a psychic connection if you know the individual," Sakusa nodded. "Who is the one keeping you in the cage?"
Yamaguchi felt his stomach drop. His palms clammed up as he became very nervous. He glanced over at Sakusa before darting his eyes down to the mug of tea in his hands.
"Lying to me will only make this harder," Sakusa insisted. "I need for you to be honest."
"It…. It was always Team Serpent," Yamaguchi's voice cracked as he admitted this. "On top of that in my dreams they seemed to already know who I am and that I am 'there'…"
Sakusa nodded. "I had a feeling it was them that was the root cause of this."
"But this was just a few strange dreams, right?" Yamaguchi asked. "It wasn't really happening or anything, right?" Yamaguchi's voice went weak when he looked up to see Sakusa looking quite serious.
"I can't tell you what Pokemon has been interfering with your dreams. It's a psychic energy that I've yet to encounter but I can tell you this, these aren't normal dreams you've been having, Yamaguchi," Sakusa looked a little sullen as he spoke. "Whoever this Pokemon is has been projecting you into their minds and you've been witnessing their experiences in real time."
"Oh..." Yamaguchi mumbled. He wanted to be surprised by this news but somewhere deep down he already knew this was the case. Now that it was being confirmed to him, though, he didn't know what to feel.
"A connection like this is something that can only happen between a pokemon and human that have known each other," Sakusa explained. "Yamaguchi, this pokemon's psychic energy is immense. Have you ever encountered such a pokemon?"
"N-No, never!" Yamaguchi said, shaking his head. "I mean, not that I can recall," he added on, deflating a bit.
Sakusa gave a long thoughtful hum. "I'm unable to tell you who or what this pokemon is as I've never encountered this psychic energy but there was one other psychic energy connected to you."
"There were two?" Yamaguchi perked up, surprised to hear this.
"Yes, I mostly picked up on the mystery pokemon but I also picked up the energy of a Drowsy," Sakusa nodded. "I don't think I need to tell you this but that Drowsy most likely belongs to Team Serpent. They are keeping tabs on you."
"K-Keeping tabs… on me?" Yamaguchi gasped as he felt himself become sick.
"It would seem so…" Sakusa nodded.
"Sakusa…" Yamaguchi's voice was weak as he felt the overwhelming need to vomit. "T-Team Serpent tried to kidnap me a few weeks ago…I overheard them say they needed me."
Sakusa almost looked shocked at hearing this. "Did they say why they needed you?"
"I don't know. I got away before I could find out," Yamaguchi admitted.
"Have you reported this to anyone?" Sakusa seemed quite shocked when Yamaguchi shook his head.
"I haven't told anybody other than you," Yamaguchi felt so foolish admitting this.
"Why would you keep this from people? This is serious!" Sakusa sounded quite upset.
"W-Well the person who saved me said I needed to keep it on the low," Yamaguchi defended.
"Who saved you?" Sakusa asked, suspiciously.
Yamaguchi hesitated for a moment. Lillie had told him to keep this a secret but Sakusa seemed to be able to help him. "S-Someone from the International Police," Yamaguchi agmisted, keeping any names out of it.
Sakusa seemed less upset at hearing this. "So they are involved with this as well," he hummed, sitting back in his chair.
"They told me not to tell anyone and to just carry on with my travels and that everything would be okay," Yamaguchi said, almost as if he needed to defend himself more for having been quiet about this.
"They probably just don't want to cause a panic," Sakusa nodded as if to agree with what Lillie had told him. "You may not realize it but they are probably also keeping tabs on you. Most likely why Team Serpent hasn't bothered you."
"Y-You think so?" Yamaguchi asked. He didn't know how to feel about this.
"Probably… Anyways, if one of their people said things are fine you're probably in safe hands," Sakusa nodded. "But no matter what, I think you have a lot to think about yourself, don't you… You've been using that Musharna to devour all your dreams."
"R-Right… I guess I eventually have to give Musharna back to her trainer," Yamaguchi nodded.
"Are you going to help the Pokemon that's been reaching out to you?" Sakusa asked in such a straightforward way Yamaguchi was taken off guard a bit.
"I-I..." Yamaguchi struggled to get out his reply.
"It seems to think you're the only one it can rely on. That's probably one reason why Team Serpent is after you," Sakusa carried on. "If I were you I'd decide whether I can help this Pokemon or not."
"B-But how could I help them?" Yamaguchi replied, emphasising the 'I'.
"Maybe you should ask it," Sakusa plainly replied.
Yamaguchi's mouth hung open in silent disbelief.
"Anyways, I think you have very little to worry about. If the International Police is on the case I'm sure things will eventually work out. The Elite Four is also doing what we can to stop these assholes," Sakusa shrugged.
"Nothing to worry about!?" Yamaguchi squeaked, feeling a bit angry. "I've almost been kidnaped three times and I've only been in Kalos for a few months."
"Stop wandering around in dangerous places," Sakusa shrugged.
"I am not wandering around in dangerous places," Yamaguchi pouted.
"Well, it seems to me like whatever is going on with Team Serpent might involve you more than you want it to so you better decide what you want to do about it and then carry on with your life," Sakusa said, sounding annoyed.
"How can I just-" Yamaguchi stated only for a knock at the door to cut him off.
It was Komori. "Sorry to bother you, Saksusa, but your next battle appointment is here," he nodded politely as he peeked into the room.
"I thought I told you to leave me alone while I was in here," Sakusa snapped.
Komori gave a small shrug. "They will be waiting on the battlefield," he said before leaving the two.
"I suppose this is it for now," Sakusa sighed. "Feel free to contact me if you ever need to." He passed Yamaguchi a paper with his private number on it.
"Th-Thank you for helping me," Yamaguchi mumbled, feeling a little bad for having gotten upset. He took the paper and slipped it into his pocket.
"I mostly did this out of curiosity," Sakusa nodded. "But if you want to repay me then let me know who the pokemon is that has contacted you once you find out. I can catalog it so the next time I see such energy I will know."
"How do you know I will find out who the pokemon is?" Yamaguchi reluctantly asked.
Sakusa paused for a long moment. "Just a hunch," he said, his eyes almost having a strange glow to them.
Yamaguchi half wondered if Sakusa was part psychic pokemon himself.
"I'll have to see you off now," Sakusa said, standing from his chair.
The walk down the dark hallways felt much shorter to Yamaguchi and it seemed a lot less mysterious now. Yamaguchi's mind was still reeling from all he heard. His crazy assumptions had been correct if what Sakusa said was true. It left him a bit confused on what to do next. Once at the Gym lobby Yamaguchi thanked Sakusa once more before he took his leave.
"I hope he didn't give you too much trouble," Komori said as he saw Yamaguchi off.
"No, it was quite helpful, actually," Yamaguchi insisted.
"Sorry he put you and your friends through the run around like that if he was just going to talk with you anyways," Komori said with a sheepish laugh. "He can be kind of dramatic like that and a little stubborn."
"Yeah, I'll have to tell Kageyama and Tsukki once they've calmed down that he took time to meet with me," Yamaguchi laughed. He knew once Tsukki found out he was going to be very peeved.
The two bid each other farewell. The sun was now beginning to set. Yamaguchi wondered just how long he had been with Sakusa. It didn't feel like that long but at the same time he hadn't been in the right mindset to tell the passing of time. Then again the days were getting shorter now that summer was ending. Maybe it wasn't that late. He wondered if Tsukki was going to be upset at him for being away so long.
Yamaguchi looked out over the lake as he passed by it. The orange sunset and the light of the giant crystal structure both reflected beautifully off the lake's surface. A mix of orange and pink danced across the lake's surface.
Yamaguchi didn't know what to do next. He now knew that Team Serpent was targeting him but Sakusa didn't seem so bothered by it knowing that the International Police was also on the case. He wondered just how long Team Serpent had been watching him. Was it ever since he arrived or perhap while he was still in Alola? Or could it be just recently? Was the International Police somewhere watching him now? Just how much danger was he in?
His mind then turned to the mystery pokemon. If Yamaguchi remembered correctly it seemed like that Pokemon had escaped the same day he was in the tunnel. Where was it now? Did Team Serpent still want it? Did they still need him now that it had escaped? Could all of this possibly be over?
But Sakusa made it sound like he was still being tracked. So maybe he wasn't out of the woods yet? The idea sent a shiver down Yamaguchi's spine. He suddenly didn't feel so safe being alone on the street like this. He was an easy target when he was alone. Sylveon must have picked up on his fear because she took his hand in her ribbons. He felt less anxious but still walked a little faster.
Once back at the hotel Yamagucih made a beeline for his room. He was a little shocked to see that Tsukki was gone. He probably went looking for him since he had been gone so long. He took out his pokedex and shot Tsukki a text letting him know he was back before making himself comfortable on the sofa.
Their room overlooked the lake. The sun was still setting and the lake's surface was still painted orange and pink. Yamaguchi relaxed as he tried to process what Sakusa had told him. He knew Tsukki was going to have questions for him. Yamaguchi just didn't know what he was going to tell him. He didn't even know if he could tell him. He hadn't figured out what it was he wanted to do next.
Was he going to just shut all this out and carry on? Was he going to let his guards down and try to make connect with the mystery Pokemon? Should he stop his journey or keep going? How much danger was he in and how much danger was he putting Tsukki and his friends in? He just didn't know. Yamaguchi was in such deep thought that when Tsukki arrived back he didn't even hear the door.
"Where have you been?" Tsukishima snapped as he marched towards Yamaguchi.
Yamaguchi turned to face him. He tried to smile but it must not have been convincing because Tsukki's domeaner softened a little. "Sorry, I thought I sent you a message that I was going to be out for a bit," Yamaguchi half lied.
Tsukishima sent him a grimace before taking a seat next to him on the sofa. "We were all worried," he flatly sighed.
Without asking for permission Yamaguchi leaned against Tsukki and almost like second nature Tsukki wrapped his arm around him. "This is going to piss you off," he said as he cuddled up.
"What?" Tsukishima grumbled, still allowing Yamaguchi to snuggle.
"I met Sakusa," Yamaguchi sighed. He glanced up to see Tsukishima galre.
"And…" Tsukishima tensed.
"He talked with me for a little bit I guess," Yamaguchi shrugged, choosing his words slowly so as to not upset Tsukki.
"What are you saying by 'talked with'?" Tsukishiam asked.
"I guess he may have tried to help me identify the pokemon that's been interfering with my dreams," Yamaguchi didn't look at Tsukki as he admitted this but looked out the window instead.
"And what did he say?" Tsukishima asked. Yamaguchi could tell he was annoyed.
"He said there was a pokemon interfering with my sleep but he didn't know what pokemon it was…" Yamaguchi admitted.
"And that's it?" Tsukishima mumbled.
Yamaguchi didn't answer but instead shrugged. He didn't know if he should talk about the other parts. He didn't know what to do about it and just saying it out loud scared him.
Tsukishima could tell there was more but decided not to pry. It was often better to just let Yamaguchi stew for a bit before interrogating him. "I can't believe he made us battle with him when he intended to talk with you anyways," he growled.
"Komori said he was dramatic like that," Yamaguchi giggled. "And I'm sorry you had to have such a tough battle."
"It's good for my team to have battles like that from time to time," Tsukishima shrugged. "It will only make me stronger."
"You really have grown up, Tsukki," Yamaguchi teased before planting a small kiss on Tsukki's lips.
"What are you talking about, I've always been the most mature," Tsukishima teased back before going in for another kiss.
"If you're so mature then stop teasing Hinata and Kageyama," Yamaguchi said with a small giggle.
"No way!" Tsukishima playfully frowned. "Someone has to let those two know how dumb they are."
"You're so silly, Tsukki," Yamaguchi said as he snuggled up with Tsukki. The sun was now almost fully set.
"I'm glad my pain amuses you," Tsukishima flatly replied before resting his head on top of Yamaguchi's.
The two held each other close as they rested on the couch. Yamaguchi hadn't a clue of what to do next but being with Tsukki made him feel safe. He snuggled close to Tsukki, savoring the quiet moment and wishing it could stay this calm forever.
Author Note:
Now that Yamaguchi knows the truth, what will he do? Is this the end for our boys or will they carry on with their journey? Will Yamaguchi ever come completely clean to Tsukki? Will we ever find out who the mystery pokemon is? When will Team Serpent make their next move? Stay tuned to find out that and more.
Alright everyone! I need help to find another new beta reader for the time being. If anyone is interested leave me a message here or (if you have tumblr) you can message me on Tumblr pastaprincess. I like having someone read over my chapters before posting them if I can help it. If you have time and are interested then please let me know. I use google docs to do my editing btw.
As always thank you everyone for keeping up with this fic. I know my posts are becoming slower. It's probably just a reflection of my hectic life. Work could be better but coming back to this fic always gives me a bit of escape from the crazy. Anyways, thank you for bearing with me.
I hope you all have a splendid fall and I will see you next chapter!
