Fourteen years ago, on this day, one of the greatest Barbie movies was released. As I'm publishing this story, I'm 21 and a few weeks into the final year of my undergrad degree. I'm so proud for writing this fic now.
I got the idea from a ModernGirlz video on YouTube. They were ranking the Barbie movies and said for Island Princess that Ro and Antonio could've built more chemistry if he shipwrecked on the island and they spend more time together there. So I wrote it.
This is also the first fic I'm cross-posting at the same time as publishing it on FFN!
Disclaimers - This is my first Barbie fic so I apologize for any OOC. I don't own anything.
I hope you enjoy :)
Chapter One: A Brand New Shore
"Hang on! Hang on, Antonio!"
The last words Antonio heard, barely, over the thrashing waves and gasping for air with thundering skies above him. He tried to focus on Frazer's voice but the storm wouldn't let him. It drove him to sea and dragged him away, taking control of his whole body. Antonio couldn't breathe, orient himself, or see.
He, at least, tried to stay above the surface, throwing his arms against the powerful currents. He couldn't break through and see past the water.
Eventually, his lungs give in. His breath rushes out of his lungs as a flurry of bubbles as he surrenders to the storm.
-o-
His face squints as it burns. His arms are limp against his body and barely twitch when he tries to move them. It's fine. He just needs to adjust. Through his closed eyes, he sees red. Combined with the heat basking his face, Antonio figures he's looking directly at the sun.
Slowly, his surroundings start revealing themselves to his other senses. A lingering salty taste resides in his dry mouth, desperate for a quench. His lips are chapped and his face is tight and tense. His fingers curl and he feels something soft. He's lying in it. Sand. Calm waves fill the background, getting louder and softer in rhythm. He must be ashore.
Antonio almost forces himself to open his eyes but stops when shade covers his face. It could be a palm leaf from a tree but he didn't feel any wind. It could've been a cloud rolling over.
Something touches the side of his neck and his eyes burst open. The sun hits his face, stronger this time because he's looking right at it. His blood rushes through his body, flowing again. Maybe that touch was the jolt of energy he needed, whatever it was.
Or … whomever.
From his peripheral vision, he sees someone. A woman crouched on the sand, arms and legs curled against her body. She looks like she jumped back, scared when he opened his eyes. Slowly, skeptically, she crawls over to him. Once she's by his side, Antonio sees a beautiful woman.
She opens her mouth to say something. Antonio didn't hear her but saw her lips move. He was too busy looking at her eyes that were as blue as the sky, hair as blonde as the sand below them.
This had to be a dream. No way he survived the storm and washed up beside her.
She jumps back again when he starts coughing up water. He tries to turn onto his side and the woman grabs his arm, putting a hand on his back to turn him onto his side. She pats his back as he continues coughing, tears falling from his eyes but at least they're being hydrated again. Once his body relaxes, his face rests against the sand.
Antonio's eyes flicker up. The woman's hand is still on his back but he can't believe it when he sees the most beautiful island right before him.
Yes, the chapter titles are songs from the movie.
