From the moment Virgil and Alan had disappeared, Scott had been fighting back a full-blown panic attack. He wasn't alone in this either, having already had to talk Gordon down from one. John was frantic as well, up on Five, trying to figure out just why he no longer had a read on their two brothers' locations.
And EOS wasn't giving adequate answers either. In fact, she seemed incredibly distracted if anything.
"John?" Scott asked. His voice wasn't wavering, it was steady. It was just shy of cold, actually. But his brothers knew how he reacted to unknown situations, and they knew that Scott was just very, very upset.
"Give me a moment, Scott," John muttered over the com, his hologram not even bothering to look up. "I'm trying to find out what happened."
"EOS?"
The AI didn't reply for a long moment, and when she did, her voice was crackly and indistinct. It made even John pause. "I am here. I am with Virgil and Alan. I am…confused."
"EOS?" John said softly, frowning at what was probably a camera on Five. She didn't respond. He shook his head and returned to what he'd been doing.
A camera feed came up. John had managed to find a working system from the rescue. It flickered wildly, probably damaged in the building collapse, but all three brothers could see what had happened.
A retreating scientist, having been pulled out of the rubble by Alan, had paused and hit a button on a machine before running. A machine that had been behind Virgil and Alan, clearing the rest of the room.
A break in the air swirled into being, all misty and colorful and confounding, and Virgil noticed it before Alan. Virgil's face had scrunched up the way it did when he was startled and confused. And then his eyes had widened and he'd grabbed Alan and the swirling of colors exploded outwards, swallowing the both of them.
And when the lights and colors died away, Virgil and Alan were nowhere to be seen.
Scott didn't notice that he'd fisted his hands so hard that his fingernails had cut into his palms. He didn't notice until Gordon took his hand and forced it open, dabbing at the cuts and wiping away the blood. He turned from the screen, looking down at his little brother's bowed head and took a deep, steadying breath. "Gordy?"
"EOS is with them," Gordon murmured, although his voice broke halfway through. "She's with them she said. So, they've got to be somewhere."
"What the hell was that?" John practically cried. He ran the video through again, pausing it on the face of the retreating scientist that had activated the machine. He sent the image to Kayo and then focused his attention on the machine itself. "Scott…"
"I'll ready One," Scott murmured. "Gordon."
"I'll man the fort," Gordon said with a tremulous smile. "Good thing Grandma's in Kansas, right?" Because she'd been gone for two days on vacation and still had a week left.
"Take International Rescue offline, John," Scott replied, taking another steadying breath. "Try to get through to EOS."
"Done and done," John murmured. He frowned. "EOS…she's distracted. Something's happening, but she's sending over the bio-readouts from their suits."
The readouts flickered into view, the connection a little unstable for a moment until John could stabilize it. The readouts sent a wave of relief through all three brothers, but also varying levels of concern. Virgil's was blinking red. Alan's was wavering between green and yellow. But they were both alive. "She's cut me off for now," John explained, having the computers parse through the vital information on their missing brothers. "Virgil's broken his arm. And…I don't think he's currently conscious either. Head trauma? Alan's…anxious but okay."
"Scott?" Gordon asked, dropping onto the couch and cradling his head in his hands. The aquanaut was breathing deep, in a very obvious pattern.
Scott watched him, frowning. He was just barely twenty-one and had lived through so much more than anyone ever should in one lifetime. Orphaned, paralyzed, fighting to get back to who he was…and so much more. He watched Gordon breath away his anxiety for a moment and then took a step forward, dropping to his knees in front of his little brother. He ducked down to catch Gordon's eye and forced a smile. "They're alive. We will find them. I need you to call Professor Moffet and Doctor Reeves. I have a feeling that between Brains, them, and John, we can get our missing brothers home a lot faster."
"And then we can kick their asses for making us worry so much," Gordon breathed out.
Scott's smile grew just a little more real. "Yeah. Exactly. I'm heading out in One but will be bringing the machine back in Two. John? You with me?"
"FAB."
Good. They could do this. They could make this work. Virgil and Alan would be coming back soon.
