007: Black Ivy: Chapter 2
Molly, my best friend, was only told yesterday, that I was leaving to go to MI6. The day I left school. I knew Molly was the biggest gossip in the school, and I knew the minute I walked away, the news would be told to at least 5 different people.
As I put my bags in the back seat of our car, my mum gave me a sad smile and jumped in the car and started it up. It was a silent drive to the station. I knew that the second I got on the train, there was no turning back.
Actually, there was no turning back when I told Molly, because everyone I know will call me a coward for not going to London. "We're going to miss you." Said my mum, not moving her eyes away from the road. She always did this, so she would never miss out on anything. I think too many car chases had made her this way, especially always looking over her shoulder.
I knew she kept a gun in a small cubby hole in the back of the cupboard in the kitchen. She only used to once when a dog came to our house 2 years ago in the freezing winter. She was just going to give it some food then post a picture of it to see if anyone recognised it as their dog. Then she noticed a long cut down the bottom of its stomach. It was a wonder how it never died. Mum shot it to put it out of its misery.
"You mean, you and the four cats. God, you're turning into Q." I sighed. Every year at Christmas, Q and Miss Moneypenny would come to our house for dinner. Even though I was looking out of the car window and not at mum, I could tell that she was smiling. "You sound just like James." She sighed, turning off the road into the city called Chartres. We had moved to a small house just outside city limits, with a small lake out the back.
We called the lake, Lake Bond. When we arrived at the station, it was packed with people. "Good thing you got first class." Came a voice from behind us. I turned to see a boy with his, what looked to be his grandma, carrying a lot of bags. "Yeah, I know granny." He said. He had a slight British accent. He looked and sounded like my age. "I will see you next year, Alex! Enjoy MI6!" She said as he grabbed his bags and got on the train.
"Try not to do anything I wouldn't do." Said my mum as she handed my smallest bag. "So that basically consists of... nothing." I said and laughed at the face she made. "You know what I mean." She said. "I do. See you at Halloween!" I said over my shoulder as I boarded the train. I showed my ticket and was escorted to first class. I was left in a private compartment with a window overlooking the station.
I could see mum standing there, looking somehow lost. I hoped that she would throw herself back into her work, where there was no real danger there. What I didn't know then was how short-lasted peace would turn out to be. As the train took off, my mum ran with the train until it was completely out of the station.
My bags where dumped in a heap in front of me and a few were beside me. The train journey to Calais was 14 hours, and I still had to get a boat over to London.
