Two days later Max sat on a bench of the park alone. From nearby Gemma walked over to Max and sat right next to her. Max only glanced at Gemma as he said, "So... how did your long talk with your ex-boyfriend go?" Then Gemma said, "Well... the truth is... Max, me and David broke up when we were both in a bad place. But we're both in a better place now... and we both feel it be a dis-service to ourselves if we didn't give our relationship another go. I mean... David was my first, and... I just can't toss him aside." Then Max looking upset said, "So then does that means the two of us are..." Gemma then turned her body and held both of Max's hands as she said, "Max, do not think of yourself as some stand-in. When I first broke up with David, honestly... it was mostly my fault. I felt like a terrible person that no one would ever love again. However the way you showed interest and affection towards me... you helped me realize I'm not a terrible person anymore. You helped me realize I can feel loved. However... I don't think me and you can fit. You need more than a girlfriend in your life. You need a wife, who can help you raise Sydney. Sydney is an important part of your life, and she needs me to be more than a tutor to her. And if I can't be more than that to her... then I don't deserve to be your girlfriend."
Max then briefly squeezed Gemma's hands and said, "Gemma... I wish you would re-consider and give yourself a chance to explore what we could be together. You could without a doubt be a great mother. But I can't control your mind and your desires, and I'll never try to. But whatever happens, please know that you have forever changed my life. When my wife died, I thought I could never feel that kind of love again. But you opened my heart to the idea that I am capable of loving another woman. I now truly believe I could marry another woman again. I... I just wish it could've been you Gemma." Tears appeared in Gemma's eyes as she said, "I'm sorry Max. I... I'm just not ready for that... and you deserve someone who is." Tears appeared in Max's eyes, and then he and Gemma gave each other a hug. Max then stood up as Gemma said, "I'll understand if you want to cancel my future tutoring sessions with Sydney or..." Max turned his head and said, "Never. Me and Sydney will always want you in our lives. No matter what changes between us, we will always care about you. You deserve to always be cared about Gemma." Gemma smiled, but still had tears in her eyes, as she said, "Thank you Max." Max nodded his head as he said, "Goodbye Gemma." Then Max turned his back and walked way, and once he was out of sight: Gemma held her right hand up her face as she wiped away the tears from her eyes.
