Luke Skywalker dashes down the Supremacy's dark halls. He passes around a corner to find Finn and Chewbacca helping Lorn walk, while R2 rolls beside. He looks around at the pile of stormtroopers, the body of Valto, and the unconscious Ador.
"What happened here, and where is Rey?" He asks.
"I snuck in to plant the bomb, while everyone else fought out here." Finn explains." I managed to take down the cannons' core, but after that Rey ran off to find Snoke."
"Fool girl! She's gonna get herself killed!" Luke turns as if to run after her.
"...no. It'll be much worse than that." Lorn moans.
Luke turned back to her. "What are you talking about?"
"Snoke. He knows about her. Who she really is."
Luke's brow furrows in confusion. "What do you mean? She's just a scavenger from Jakku."
Lorn shakes her head. "Come on, Skwalker. You can't tell me you haven't noticed that girl is different..."
"Just...who do you think she is?" Luke asks, face growing pale.
Lorn leans in and whispers something in Luke's ear.
"She's WHAT!?" Luke exclaims.
Lorn looks down, nodding. Luke gapes, mouthing words but no sound comes out.
"What is going on with her?" Finn says, frustrated. "Who is Rey supposed to be, and why does it matter?"
Luke shakes his head, looking disturbed. "This changes everything I need...I need to stop her."
Finn gets a ping on his commlink.
"What is it now?" Finn asks no one in particular, pulling out his comm.
An image of Ackbar appears on the communicator.
"We saw that you dealt with the cannons. Good work, but unfortunately it just wasn't enough..."
"What do you mean?" Finn exclaims, "I blew the Core an everything, you guys can escape now."
"It's not that simple." Ackbar says, shaking his head. "There are just too many of them out here. Leia...she's trying something to give us a chance to escape in some of the shuttles. "
"What is she doing?" Luke asks, worried.
"I'm sorry Master Skywalkers I cannot tell you that." Ackbar says.
"And why not?" Luke demands.
"With respect, you would likely try to stop it. All I may tell you, is that you must all get off that ship right now, and join us in our last attempt at escape."
Luke nods. "We will."
The communicator blinks off.
Luke looks at the group as a whole. "Get back to the Millenium Falcon. Have it ready to go."
He turns to leave.
"Luke!" Finn calls after him.
Luke turns.
"Please bring Rey back." Finn says, pleadingly.
Luke pauses before responding. "I'll...do my best."
With that Luke voyages deeper into the bowels of the ship.
The Praetorian Guards tighten their circle around Rey, like a noose.
Surging with the Force, she leaps over them, landing on the outside of the circle. The guards whirl around to face Rey. The moment she lands she is already swinging her lightsaber at one of the guards. Without time to get his sword up, he deflects the blade along his forearm. The lightsaber crackles and sparks against the armor, charring it. The guard shifts his stance so his other arm, and sword face Rey. The other guards advance, and Rey is forced to retreat back, knocking aside blows.
"You fight like a Jedi. And a trainee at that." Snoke notes.
"I am a Jedi!" Rey declares, parrying a sword swing.
"You will never be able to defeat them fighting as you are now." Snoke explains. "They have been trained specifically to fight Jedi."
Rey Force-pushes two of the guards back, barely slowing them. A guards with a segmented sword, swings his weapon to the side. The segments separate, stretching out into a bladed electric whip. The guard lashes the weapon at Rey, and she struggles to block. The whip tangles around her lightsaber blade. The guard wraps the whip around his arms, drawing Rey in. As he does the other guard with a segmented blade thrusts his weapon at her chest. Rey twists, and the blade slashes along her arm. The pair of guards with bladed staffs swing at Rey. She struggles to pull her saber free of the whip, and ends up taking shallow hits on her arm, and leg. Snarling, she jerk her saber back, dragging the guard with the whip forward, into Rey's kick. He flies back into the other segmented bladesman, and both sprawl to the ground. The pair with vibrating blades take their place, with the staff wielders flanking them. Rey shuffles back, deflecting blows from all four. Small cuts and slices make it past her guard here and there. The wounds begin to add up, and soon Rey has blood running down her arms. She struggles to maintain her grip on the lightsaber hilt now slick with her blood.
Rey throws out her hand at one of the sword-wielding guards. However rather than push, Rey pulls the guard towards her. Caught off balance, the guard stumbles forward, awkwardly trying to bring his sword up. Rey swings her lightsaber down on his arm. it sparks against the armor, but before any of them can act Rey is swinging again. This time, rather than bounce off, the lightsaber breaks through the plate. The sword, along with the arm holding it, plops to the floor. The Guard stumbles back, and Rey Force-pushes him across the room. The guard slams into the far wall, and drops to the ground.
"There." Rey says, with satisfaction. "One down."
Snoke chuckles, as the rest of the guards dive at Rey. She cartwheels through the space left by the guard she felled, and lands on her feet, shuffling back.
"Tell me, Rey. Out of curiosity, where have you been hiding all these years?" Snoke asks.
"I wasn't hiding!" Rey says through gritted teeth, deflecting a staff blade. "I was on Jakku, waiting for my family to come back!"
"Jakku..." Snoke says, with awe. "To think that she'd leave you at the site of the Empire's final defeat. How curious. So you grew up in the middle of nowhere on a forgotten planet. You know, we are actually the same in that regard..."
The three guards fan out, surrounding Rey again. The two others, now back on their feet, join as well.
"...believe it or not girl, I too grew up on a small planet in the middle of nowhere. I was a slave you see, destined to live like a chained animal, and then die."
"You don't look like a slave to me." Rey replies, ducking under a whip, thrash.
"A great deal has changed since then. So very much..." Snoke reminisces.
Rey blocks a sword slash, then deflects a staff thrust.
"...but, it all started with one, seemingly insignificant change. A small act of defiance. I stole an item from my master's collection..."
Rey sidesteps a whip strike, then steps in and kicks a guard holding a sword. As he stumbles back Rey knocks a sword strike away, then is force to dodge, both staff wielders' attacks.
"...the fool didn't realize that he owned a sith relic..."
Rey deflects a sword strike into one of the guard's side, then kicks a staff wielder in the gut. She launches herself into the middle of the group, and throws out both hands. Three of the guards end up flying back, with only two managing to dig their weapons into the floor: a staff-wielder and a segmented sword-user, one on either side of Rey.
"...I learned so much from it that night." Snoke explains. "The next morning, I killed my master..."
Moving in tandem, the guard with the segmented sword transforms his weapon into a whip, while the other guard breaks his staff into two curved blades. The whip-user cracks his weapon at Rey's ankles, while the blade-user leaps to swing at Rey's head . Rey hops over the whip, then throws her lightsaber at the leaping guard. He crosses his blades, deflecting the lightsaber back at Rey. She snatches it out of the air, as the guard hits the ground. Rey ducks under another whip strike from behind, and thrusts at the guard in front. The guard catches Rey's saber along one blade, then swings at her chest with the other. Rey twists, and the blade cuts a shallowly into her gut. Rey stumbles back, panting.
"...I took the name Snoke then, and began my journey to search the galaxy for more sith knowledge."
The guard behind Rey cracks his whip against Rey's back. Howling with pain, she drops to her knees. Blood drips onto the floor below her. The guard with the curved staff blades raises his weapons, to finish her. But he hesitates, looking to Snoke for confirmation.
Snoke looks down at her with interest. "I searched for answers. I was no longer a slave. Yet I wasn't sure if I was yet ready to call myself a Sith. I wanted to know my place in the galaxy. I sense you now do the same."
"I just want to know why I was abandoned in the desert!" Rey snarls.
Surging up, Rey brings her lightsaber up, clashing against the electrified blades. The force of the blow sends him stumbling. The one behind Rey cracks his whip. Whirling around, Rey throws out her arm up. The whip tangles around Rey's forearm, electricity searing into her skin. Rey seethes in pain, and seems to almost drop. But as the guard stepped forward, Rey thrusts her lightsaber blade-first into the gap between the guard's shoulder-plate. The blue blade, pierces through guard's shoulder and he jerks back from the injury. Rey Force-pulls the lightsaber back towards her dragging the guard into her waiting foot. He goes down just in time for the the guard with the curved blade advances on Rey.
She whirls swings her lightsaber against the guard's blade. He deflects the saber to the side, then swings both blades at Rey's neck. Rey ducks beneath the blades, then drags her lightsaber across the guard's leg. She hits his other leg, then both arms. All limbs sparking with damaged plates, Rey shoves him over, to crash into a heap on the floor.
The guard with the whip stumbles to his feet, one arm hanging limply, and the three other guards finally run up to join him. All four lash glowing, buzzing and electrified blades at Rey. She winces from her wounds but forces herself to focus and turn away the oncoming attacks.
"Still you try to resist your passion. Your anger!" Snoke exclaims.
The two whip users swing at Rey. One whip tangles around the lightsaber's blade, the other wraps around her leg. Rey cries out at the whip sears her skin. She tries to pull back her lightsaber, but lacks the required leverage. Rey grits her teeth from pain and frustration. The other two guards, one with a staff and the other with the sword, launch themselves at Rey. With her leg held down, and weapon tangled up, Rey is without options. The two guard's weapons descend on her. Everything moves in slow motion.
Is this really how it ends? A voice asks her. Are you really just a girl from Jakku who was foolish enough to try playing Jedi? Or are you what you've always known deep down:
Something more.
Rey trembles...with rage. She screams. All four of the Praetorian guards are blown across the room. Each of them smack into a wall, and clatter to the floor. Snoke sits up, with interest.
"That's more like it..." He says, excitedly.
He turns back to the guards, who are barely able to pull themselves up.
"Did I say you could rest?" Snoke asks, narrowing his eyes at them.
The guards shrug off their injuries, and charge at Rey. She spins Luke's lightsaber in her grip and and dashes out to meet them.
The first guard swings his sword low. Rey leaps over him and stabs the guard with the whip behind him. The lightsaber pierces clean through the guard's chest, like the plate isn't even there. He stands there limply, until Rey drags the blade out to swing it at the staff-wielder. As the dead guard drops, the staff-wielder blocks the saber on the haft of his staff. Rey kicks him in the knee, and ducks below the last guard's whip strike. The sword user spins around, and thrusts his vibrating blade at Rey's head. She knocks the blade aside and replies with downward slash. The staff-user, reaches out his weapon and blocks Rey's attack on the other guard. The two guards then cross their weapons over the lightsaber blade and push Rey back. She stumbles towards the whip user. He retracts his weapon back to a segmented sword and swings the blade at Rey's exposed back. Without looking Rey twists, avoiding the weapon completely and kicks the guard in the chest. He falls to the ground, Rey's focus never turning from the two that push her backwards. Growling, Rey surges with the Force and pushes back. Both stumble and Rey pounces. Rey swings at the staff-wielder, knocking his weapon aside, and drives her lightsaber into his gut. She drags the weapon back out in time to block the sword-wielder's swing. He swings again. When Rey blocks, he smashes his elbow into her face. Her face snaps to the side from the blow. She turns back to snarl at the guard. She shoves him away with the Force, and reaches out towards the ground. The dead guard's curved staff flies into her hand. She swings the lightsaber first, which the guard blocks, then swings low with to hook the curved staff around the guard's leg and rip his feet out from under him. As he hits the ground, Rey swings the lightsaber down at him. The guard throws up both forearms, resisting the lightsaber, in a shower of sparks. Rey drags the lightsaber to the side, and both arms fall limp. Rey then impales the guard on the floor. Shes tosses the curved staff aside, and turns to see the final guard. He holds his segmented sword against one forearm, in a guarding stance. Rey charges at him. She swings wildly and the guard parries, driving the point of his blade towards her face. Rey twists out of the way, but still earns herself a slash along the cheek. She rages at the wound, slashing the lightsaber at the guard's midsection. The guard takes the segmented blade in both hands and pulls it apart, catching the lightsaber's blade along the length of the whip. Rey thrust at his chest but the guards sidesteps it and and cracks the whip against Rey's side. She no longer seems hurt by the blows, only gettin angrier. The guard spins, swinging the whip to tangle around Rey's arm. She looks down at her arm, wrapped in the electric whip. The electricity doesn't burn her this time. Her skin seems to absorb it. The guard stares at her, taking a step back. Letting loose a war-cry, Rey lunges forward, and swings.
The final guard's body drops. His head hits the floor a moment later. Rey deactivates the lightsaber.
"Look at what you did...magnificent." Snoke says, with glee.
"I..." Rey glances around the room, as if in a daze.
She looks down at the bodies littered all over the room. She almost gags.
"I...did this?"
"You did." Snoke confirms. "And it is only the beginning of what you are truly capable of."
Rey trembles as she looks up at Snoke. Fear is in her eyes.
"...who am I?"
Snoke smiles.
"That child, is a very long story..."
Snoke stands up. He strides down the steps to his throne to stand in front of Rey. At ten feet tall, he looms high above her. She steps back instinctively. But there is no aggression in his eyes. Just satisfaction.
"...I learned all I could of the sith and their history in the galaxy. But of all the dark lords that rose up to face the Jedi, there was one of them that soared higher than any of the others..."
Snoke begins to walk around Rey in a circle.
"...one that I admired far more than the rest. One that did what all the others before him could not. He was called Darth Sidious...however, you would know him as Palpatine. The Emperor."
Rey shutters, as if the very name chills her.
"He was not a fool like so many others. He was patient and clever. They says Darth Plagueis was the wisest of the sith, yet that did not stop him from being cut down by Sidious. He did not bring the very Republic to its knees. He did not fulfil the plan that had been set forth by Darth Bane a millenia prior. No, that was Sidious."
Snoke eyes go distance and a small smile works its way onto his lips.
"And it was Sidious who, along with his apprentice, Darth Vader, did something his predecessors had failed to do for centuries: He destroyed the Jedi Order. Sidious then claimed title of Emperor, and established control over the galaxy, bringing prosperity to all worlds under his reign. For years he ruled, unopposed."
Snoke's expression falters.
"However, one day Vader's son Luke Skywalker, revealed himself. Eventually he confronted The Emperor and Vader in an attempt to bring down the Empire for good. Skywalker fought, but could not overcome the power of The Emperor. Then, just before Sidious' greatest triumph, Darth Vader turned on his master, and killed him."
Snoke shakes his head, as if this was a tragedy.
"I wanted so badly to be like him. To finish what Palpatine had started. So, when I found the remnants of the Imperial fleet roaming in the unexplored regions, I took it upon myself to oversee them. I named myself their Supreme Leader, and so, the First Order was born..."
Snoke paces back around to Rey's front.
"Wh-what does that have to do with me?" Rey stutters.
"Everything," Snoke says, relishing in the word. "Because I discovered something truly amazing in my journey through the galaxy. A plan, left by The Emperor. You see, The Emperor knew he would perish one day. It is the nature of things. But he did not believe that death had to be the end. All things survive through the Force. It is said that a powerful Jedi's mind can survive even after death, by becoming one with the Force. This is not the case with users of the Dark Side. When a Sith dies, their mind becomes fractured, broken. Only small pieces of their influence remain after death. But Sidious believed, that the shards of his mind could be brought back together. But, only with the proper vessel..."
There is an inaudible whisper. Rey whirls around, but sees nothing. Slowly, Rey turns back to Snoke's malicious smile.
"...He knew that the new body would have to be perfect. So, Sidious created a clone of himself..."
More whispers. Rey struggles to ignore them.
"...the cloning process proved complicated. Slight changes had to be made to the genetic code. Curiously, when the cloned baby was born...it was female."
The whispers stop. Rey breathes deeply.
"...what happened to the clone?" She asks, swallowing.
Snoke's smile widens.
"She was put into carbon freeze, until such a time as time as she was needed. After the Emperor died, one of his agents was to find the clone, and facilitate Sidious' return through her. Instead...when that agent finally found the clone, they left her on a forgotten planet where no one would ever find her..."
Rey soaks in ever word, never breaking from Snoke's gaze.
"Rey...you are that clone."
"No..." Rey says, voice trembling.
"Yes..." Snoke says.
"NO!" Rey screams.
"...You are the successor to the greatest Sith Lord who ever lived! Darth Sidious!"
"That's not...I can't be..." Rey's voice trails off.
"Did you not think it was strange?" Snoke asks. "Your affinity for the Force? Your instinct to turn towards the dark? Most of all, your connection with Kylo Ren?"
"No..." Rey says weakly.
"You were bound by the history of your bloodlines. The clone of Sidious, and the grandson of Vader. Destined to rule together, or so I thought, before he proved to be such a disappointment..." Snoke shakes his head.
Rey is no longer listening. She only stares down at her hands, as if they aren't her own. Snoke seems to notice.
"...you were to be given something of Sidious'." He says. "Something he would leave a trace of his influence on. Something that would put you on the right path..."
Snoke reaches into his robe and pulls out something in a closed hand. He holds it out to Rey, opening his palm. A small, electrum-coated lightsaber.
"...his lightsaber."
The whispers return all at once. Rey holds her hands over her ears, but this does nothing to stop the noise.
"No! Stop this!" Rey shouts, stumbling back.
"I cannot," Snoke replies. "I cannot change who you are, nor would I if I could."
"This can't..." Rey stammers. "This can't be true..."
"Oh but it is." Snoke says. "You were hidden away. Cast on a forgotten planet. Left to live a life of insignificance. But the Force did not allow that. It brought you here, to me."
Snoke lets go of the lightsaber. It hovers in the air in front of him. He pushes his hand forward, gently. The lightsaber passes through the air, and stops in front of Rey. She shrinks back from it, as it if is poisonous.
"...think of all that you experienced. All the hate. The rage. All of it, because you deprived of your true place..."
Rey stares at the lightsaber. Hesitantly she steps closer to it.
"...and now, you have discovered your real true place in the galaxy..."
Slowly her hand reaches towards the blade. As she does the whispers grow louder. Her hand stops just and inch from the hilt.
"...take it." Snoke says.
Rey's hand closes around the lightsaber. The whispers stop. A faint crackle of purple lightning surges around her. Rey sucks in a breath, as if it is her first time tasting air. There is a distant cackle of laughter.
"Yes..." Snoke says, leaning forward. "Finally! Now we shall-"
The door to the throne room explodes inward. Snoke looks up with surprise. The door sails through the air towards them. Snoke gestures and the door flies past into the far wall with a crash. The two praetorian guards from outside fly in, smashing against the far wall. Through the debris, walks Luke Skywalker. He looks at Rey. Her back is turned to him, Luke's gaze shifts up to Snoke. He narrows his eyes.
"Skywalker...you're finally here." Snoke says, with wide eyes. Slowly, he grins, displaying yellowed teeth.
"Rey, we're leaving." Luke says, not looking away from Snoke.
Rey says nothing.
"Rey!" Luke shouts.
"Did you know?" Rey asks, without turning around.
Luke takes a step back. He swallows.
"Did you know?" She repeats.
"...I just found out." Luke says, after a pause.
"So you know what I am, then." She says, back still turned.
"What I know Rey..." Luke says. "...is that came to me to learn to be a Jedi. You decided that was what you wanted to be. It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from. That's who you are: A Jedi."
Rey turns around finally. She looks at Luke with a neutral expression. Luke looks down at her hands. In one she holds Darth Sidious' lightsaber. In the other she holds Luke's old lightsaber. She holds both up, as if weighing the two.
"Rey please..." Luke says, pleadingly.
"If you'd have known...would you have ever trained me?" Rey asks, with hollow eyes.
"Rey it doesn't matter!" Luke insists.
"Would you have trained me?" She asks again.
Luke looks down.
"...no."
"That's what I thought." Rey says, nodding.
"Rey please!" Luke pleads. "We can still go back together! You don't have to do this! It doesn't matter why you were brought into this world. You can choose for yourself who you are!"
For a moment, Rey stares at Luke. Then, she smiles sadly and looks down.
"I'm sorry Luke. I wish I could come back with you and forget what I now know. I could join you and everyone else. And we could all be a kind of family. It would be nice...but it wouldn't be real. It wouldn't be who I am..."
She closes her eyes. A flash of scenes fly through Rey's head.
A transport ship flying off to leave Rey behind. Rey dangling off the side of a ruined Star-Destroyer, hanging on for dear life. A boy lying limp in the sand, Rey running away from him. Rey swinging her lightsaber against Kylo Ren, yelling with rage. A cave of darkness and lightning. The cackle of a laughing robed man.
When she opens her eyes they are as dark as black of space itself.
And then, Rey drops Luke's lightsaber. it seems to fall in slow motion. Finally, It clatters to the floor, ringing out through the chamber.
"...this is who I am."
Rey activates Darth Sidious' lightsaber. Luke steps back as red light fills the room.
Good... A voice says to Rey...now, kill him.
Luke gives Rey one last pleading look. Her eyes begin to fill with anger. Luke's eyes full of sorrow.
"Not again...not..." His expression hardens. "...No. I will bring you back."
He activates his green lightsaber.
"One way or another."
Rey surges forward, as Luke does the same. They swing their lightsabers. Red meets Green in a clash of magnificent white light. Rey shoves against Luke's blade, but he does not move an inch. She throws her free hand at Luke. The only thing that happens is his cloak flutters behind him. Luke throws his free hand at Rey. She goes flying back, skidding across the floor.
"Remember what I taught you Rey!" Luke commands. "Push past the anger, the hate!"
"No!" Snoke bellows. "Bathe in the hate. Let it give you strength!"
Rey leaps back up to her feet and charges at Luke again. She swings wildly at Luke. He steps to the side, and the lightsaber sails past. Rey pulls back to swing downward at Luke. He deflects. Rey swings at one side. Luke blocks. She swings at the other side. Luke blocks again. She thrusts in an attempt to run him through. Luke deflects. Rey growls at her ineffectual attacks.
"Think of the light, Rey!" Luke yells.
She snarls swinging her red lightsaber at Luke's neck. He brings up his own saber locking their blades together. Rey pushes against him, trying to inch the blade closer.
"Think of Finn," Luke says, quietly.
For a moment, Rey's expression falters. The rage drops from her face almost completely.
"Think of the pain you endured!" Snoke cries out. "How you were treated like you were worthless!"
The rage returns to Rey's face.
"Rey-" Luke starts to say.
She shoves Luke back. He stumbles, and Rey leaps through the air at him. Luke knocks a wild strike aside, then shuffles back at Rey increases the frequency of her blows. She bellows, slamming the red lightsaber again and against against Luke's green blade. Luke blocks each strike in turn, but shuffles back under the onslaught. Rey swings from every direction moving faster with every strike. After parrying one of Rey's strikes Luke throws out his hand, shoving Rey back with the Force. As she slides to the ground, Luke swings his hand back up before she can rise. She floats into the air, then sails back into the wall. Luke holds her there, stuck against the metal as he moves in. sneering, Rey pulls both arms against her chest, then throws them outwards. A shockwave of the Force spreads through the room, throwing Luke back. He slides across the floor, and Rey drops to the ground. Rey immediately resumes her charge at Luke. He holds his lightsaber defensively. Rey moves like a blur, red blade arcing around Luke, clashing against his own spinning green blade. They move with incredible speed, trailing red and green. A
s they dash around the room smashing their lightsabers together, Snoke watches with fascination. Rey lunges at Luke but he smashes the weapon aside, causing Rey to stumble. Luke surges forward, swinging his lightsaber at Rey's wrist.
"No!" Snoke yells.
He throws out a hand and Sith lightning erupts from his palm. Luke twists his lightsaber around to block the lightning stream. He deflects the Sith lightning into the floor, where it burns a hole in the metal.
"I will not let you ruin this for me." Snoke hisses.
Rey, having recovered, launches herself at Luke again.
Kylo Ren stumbles through the halls of the Supremacy. He looks up to see the destroyed doorway to Snoke's throne room. He rushes in and gasps at what he sees. Rey moves like an animal, thrashing against Luke's steady guard. He blocks deflects and knocks all of the blows in a blurring arc of green. He throws his hand out, pushing Rey back, but she barely touches floor before she races back at Luke.
Kylo gapes at the display. Snoke does not notice him at first, as he is invested in the fight. After a moment his eye catch Kylo's. He sneers at him.
"Hello my failure of an apprentice." Snoke says with disdain.
Kylo looks down, under Snoke's gaze. Luke's eyes flicker over to Kylo, but he immediately returns his focus to Rey. She crouches down and swings her lightsaber at Luke's legs. Luke leaps back then thrusts at Rey. She smacks the blade aside and tries to behead Luke. He twists his blade around to block. Rey inches forward, trying to push against Luke. He shoves her down, but Rey is back in fraction of a second. Kylo's eyes flicker back and forth between the two. Looking uncertain.
"Do not interfere now," Snoke commands. "I believe she can win alone, given time..."
Kylo simply stares. Red and Green lights flashing back and forth across his face.
