Chapter 15: Savage and Unexplored! History Sealed Away

Up north...

"The whole world looks silver as far as the eye can see." Amelia gawked at the snowy landscape before them.

"Is the final weapon really here?" Gourry asked.

"Give me a break." Lina shivered. "I'm not built to be cold, tired and hungry like this."

"No doubt about it." Filia confirmed. "The final weapon is definitely up ahead. If the final weapon falls into our enemies' hands, it would be disastrous."

"Into our enemies' hands." Lina mused. "Those guys said they were gathering the five weapons to kill Darkstar, but is that really their objective?"

"I wouldn't count on it." Zelgadis replied. "We've seen that guy Erulogos is willing to destroy entire cities in this world in order to get the final weapon."

"All they are now are a bunch of destroyers." Amelia declared.

"All we can do now is get the weapon before they do and then see what they try." Lina decided.

"We are here." Aria stopped at the edge of the cliff overseeing the abandoned Ancient Dragon temple.

"What in the world?" Lina gaped as the large dome appeared.

Arriving before the Ancient Dragon temple...

"Really quiet, isn't it?" Lina remarked, entering the temple. "Although, I can't see why anyone would build a temple in the middle of an ice field."

"Don't be so short-sighted." Gourry cautioned. "Humans aren't the only people in this world."

"Ghosts I can believe in this place." Lina noted. "I just hope we finally start getting some answers." she walked forward, only be to bounced back by a forcefield.

"I really shouldn't be too surprised there's a forcefield around this place." Aria tsked.

"A barrier created by the Dragon race." Filia took a closer look. "It's definitely been magically restricted by the Golden Dragons. The magical crests dotted across the land generate a barrier at their exact center."

"And you're saying that's this place here?" Zelgadis confirmed.

"But I never thought, I never knew our race had built a temple this far out in the frontier." Filia admitted.

"That's because this isn't a Golden Dragon temple." Aria supplied. "This temple belongs to the Ancient Dragons."

"Seriously?" the group turned to her in surprise.

"Filia, you should know how to break a sealing barrier created by the Golden Dragons, right?" Aria questioned.

"Yes, but..." Filia stammered.

"We can't turn away now, Filia." Aria snapped. "If we want to know if what Valgarv said was true..."

"That's right." Filia strengthened her resolve. "This is no time to be distracted." pressing her hands against the energy shield, she shattered the barrier.

Inside the temple...

"Follow me." Aria led the group into the heart of the temple. "Take a close look, Filia." the incarnate of the Water Dragon King stated flatly. "Take a close look at the sins your race committed against my followers."

Filia gave the Ancient Dragon skeletons embedded on the stone plaques on the wall a look and let out a fearful sob.

"What is all of this?" Amelia exclaimed in shock as the skeletons were presented before the others.

"Another barrier is still being cast further inside." Zelgadis pointed.

"Why would someone go to this much trouble to seal off a temple belonging to the Ancient Dragons?" Gourry wondered.

"Because they have something to hide." Aria replied.

Filia's Dragon gem glowed and activated the holographic device in front of the group.

"You who carry the blood of the Golden Dragons..." a trio of voices droned. "Our ancient enemies... answer us, servant of the Fire Dragon King. You, who murdered our race, despite both our masters being brother and sister; who hid our remains in this land of ice. Why have you come to disturb our grave? You, who become murderers in the name of the Gods."

"Murderers?" Filia echoed. "Our race lives to reform those who would prevent peace. There's no way we could have been murderers."

"Those who would prevent peace?" the trio of voices chorused. "Is obeying the creed of our Master 'evil'? Is not participating in a war 'evil'? And using your might to kill those who disagree with you 'just'?" the Ancient Dragon Elders appeared in human form. "Look well at the truth which time's passage has buried." using their power, they brought the group into the Ancient Dragons' past memories. "With the loss of our beloved Master, the Water Dragon King, in the Kōma War, the Dragon race desired a new power to oppose the Mazoku. And that power lay with the one Dragon tribe who did not participate in the war upon our Master's wishes: we, the Ancient Dragons. Our dearest Master forbade us from joining the war because he knew us joining the war would lead to the use of a weapon too powerful to ever be used. He feared the balance of this world will be upset. Our dear Master had always preached that 'New power would give rise to new destruction.' That is why he had us seal away this new threat. Even now, we ask the question: Why can peace be not attained by not fighting and instead quietly accepting fate? But despite obeying our Master's orders and sealing it away, it was clear us Ancient Dragons still possessed the power to threaten the world. The fear we would someday unleash it to avenge our Maser's death grew to unstoppable strength. And the result was that those who guaranteed the 'peace' of the world ordered our annihilation. Look for yourself what they did in the name of 'justice'. And then, answer our question." another burst of power brought the group to the aftermath of the massacre: the entire race of Ancient Dragons was slaughtered to the very last Dragon and crucified upon the Golden Dragons' spears. The scene then cut to the sole survivor of the massacre: the child dragon, Valtiera. "Answer our question." the Ancient Dragon Elders demanded.

"What was..." Gourry breathed in shock.

"If what they said was true, then, inside this temple, the Ancient Dragons hid a powerful weapon they found." Lina surmised.

"Only a dragon can break a dragon barrier." Filia stated, Aria reclaiming the still glowing Dragon gem. "Right now, let's just think about getting the final weapon. The truth behind everything is hidden here." she added, Aria leading the group further into the temple. Focusing her power, she proceeded to break the barrier as the roof split open above.

An energy blast from Erulogos on the roof interrupted them.

"Aria, protect Filia." Lina went into commander mode. "We have to stop those guys." she shot up to the roof along with the others.

"Even I cannot breach a barrier of the Gods," Xellos appeared in the chamber. "You're certainly proving yourself useful. Filia."

"Xellos, what are you doing here by yourself?" Armace demanded, stopping the Mazoku Priest.

"Shouldn't you be watching the gateway, Armace?" Xellos chided.

"What's the point if you're just trying to cheat me?" Armace retorted.

"All that's left now is to get the final weapon." Xellos reminded.

"I doubt you'll sit quietly by and help Erulogos." Armace reasoned. "What are you up to?"

"That, of course, is a secret." Xellos winked.

"One more barrier left to break." Filia broke through the first shield.

"So, you've made it this far, Filia." the Supreme Elder appeared before the shield device.
