(Second Opening Theme: Beastars Opening 1-Wild Side Performed By ALI)
"Rei-chan-You can't sleep forever. Time to wake up."
"Onii-chan?"
The first thing Reina noticed as she awoke was her head throbbing and her body had been strangely warm. She could feel a stinging pain in her right hand as she noticed it had been in a cast as she had been laying on an old futon as King had been licking her hand to make it all better. A wet cold cloth had been draped on her forehead
Only a single light had kept the room a lit, as it looked to be an electric lantern. The windows had been boarded as she could hear the wind blowing gently through it giving it an eerily whistle.
"You really are trouble prone-Aren't you Firefly?"
Reina turned to her side and noticed Dabi had been sitting there. She had only now realized his jacket had been off and had been covering her body.
"How long have I been out?" She asked with a groan.
"A couple of hours." Dabi replied, "You were sort of in and out of it for awhile. Bright Eyes and I think that might be from your new trick."
"Bright Eyes…?" Reina said confused, before she heard the door slide open. They both looked over to see that Nanami and Jaeger entered the room along with Kiyo, Valentine, Wan, Riichi and Nira.
"Rei-chan!" Nanami said as she ran over to her side, "Thank Goodness!"
"Are you alright?" Jaeger asked as he approached.
Reina only groaned as she nodded her head, "What happened?"
"You ended up passing out-Again." Wan replied, "You got yourself a fever, like the trouble prone girl you are."
"Nice to see some things about you still haven't changed." Riichi said.
"It's best if you take it easy while we have the chance to rest." Nanami told her. She soon gave her a pat on the head as she gave her a smile, "When we were kids, we were always the ones saving you. It's nice to see how much you've grown."
"It doesn't feel like I have-Since I've done nothing but cause trouble." Reina said.
Nanami only shook her head, as she gave her a smile, "Back in the sewers, you saved us Rei-chan. That counts for something, doesn't it?"
The heavy feeling in her chest felt lighter at this as she had uttered a small smile. Nanami held out her hand towards her and Reina took her hand as they gave a squeeze. King went to Reina's side until his body rested against her own.
She couldn't help but laugh softly.
"Hey-" Dabi soon said, as he lit a cigarette, "-Is there any sign of Kaiya yet?"
Most of the group looked dejected at the questions. "She's still not here yet." Nira replied, "The only thing that's out there-Are those inhuman things."
Reina looked confused at this, "Kaiya-san… Isn't here?"
"No." Riichi replied, "It's been two hours and she hasn't shown up."
"I don't understand." Valentine said, "The flare was fired not too long ago. She should've been here by now."
"Perhaps she had gotten held up with the current residents of Nakagata." Nanami suggested.
"Or they could be dead…" Nira said dejectedly.
"No!" Kiyo immediately said, "My mom wouldn't let herself get killed! She'll be here, I'm sure of it!"
"You said that thirty minutes ago and she's not here is she!" Nira soon said.
"Well you don't have to be SO negative!" Kiyo couldn't help but say angrily.
"ENOUGH!" Jager shouted as they immediately ceased, "Yelling at each other isn't going to help anyone. Just be thankful we got what we needed for the plan."
"He's right-" Nanami replied, "-We're all just tired after the long day. We could all use the rest. We should take the opportunity while we have it."
"Believe me I intend to-" Dabi said before taking a puff, "-Considering that we can't go anywhere with those freaks outside."
"What…?" Reina said before coughing, "What are you talking about?"
"The Styx's-" Dabi replied as he gestured to the window, "-They chased us here, but instead of trying to get in, they're just sitting out there."
"Whatever it is they're doing-I'm almost glad they're not getting in here." Riichi said, "If we had to deal with another bastard like them, it'll be too soon."
"I don't care what the hell they're doing-" Wan said, "-They'll be gone when morning comes."
"Until then-" Jaeger said, "-We're gonna hold out here till the sun rises. If Kaiya or the men she was with don't come by the time the Styx's are gone, we'll move on with the plan. We take the desktop back to TerraShield and use it to call for help."
Most of the group had been uneasy though from their expressions alone, they all mentally agreed. Jager looked satisfied by this.
"Miss-" He said to Nanami in particular, "-Would you mind helping me search for some supplies?"
Nanami looked uneasy as she looked at Reina; she squeezed her hand again. "Relax Bright Eyes-" Dabi told her, "-I'll keep an eye on your sister. After all-I'm the one keeping her from kicking the bucket."
Nanami only nodded before she turned to Reina. She could feel Nanami give her a kiss on the head, that was almost motherly.
"I'll be back soon, Rei-chan." She said to her with a gentle smile, "Okay?"
"... I know." Reina said.
With one last squeeze, she allowed her sister's hand to slip from her fingers before she watched as she left the room with Jaeger.
"Welp-!" Wan said as she clapped her hands, "-I'm gonna go exploring."
"That really a good idea?" Dabi asked her.
"I can't help what was on my bucket list." Wan said with a shrug before she went out the door, "Yo Devilman, want to see if this place had a gift shop and break the cash register?"
"You read my mind." Riichi said with a smirk.
"Nira, Val-" Wan said as she gave her a nudge, "-Wanna get in on causing property damage? I'll let you two pick."
"Eh-" Valentine said with a shrug, "-Why the hell not?"
Nira sighed, "I need something to take my mind off what's been happening-And the threat literally outside the door."
With that said, Wan, along with Riichi, Valentine and Nira made their exit out of the room and went down the hall. Reina could almost swear she heard the sound of footsteps descending, indicating to her there had been stairs.
She could hear Dabi exhale as the smoke left his lips.
"Seriously kid-" Dabi said, "-You told me before you didn't like pain-Yet you went and broke your hand, which by the way you're still recuperating after last time."
Reina only sighed, as she sensed the tone of voice. "... If it's any constellation-I wasn't thinking straight."
"Damn right you weren't." He said, "What the hell was going on through your head?! Your arm could have fallen off, or worse exploded!"
"I-" Reina started to say before coughing as she sat herself up, "-Thought you two were going to die! What was I supposed to do just sit there!?"
Dabi only groaned as he tossed his cigarette aside, "Kid-I've been at this longer than you've been training to be a hero at that High School!"
"Well sorry, but if you think I was just gonna sit there like a vegetable and be useless!"
"I can take care of myself, you know!"
"Well you would be dead if it wasn't for me!"
Dabi tugged on his hair as he groaned again, "Kid-I'm out here trying to protect you, so risking my life is in that territory! If you end up dying I WON'T forgive myself! And believe you me that's the first I ever said about someone!"
"And I would never live with myself if something happened to you, or my sister who I just found out is actually a real person and not just someone I made up in my head!"
"I'm not helpless you know! Why can't you trust me to take care of myself?!"
"BECAUSE YOU'RE SOMEONE I CARE ABOUT, OKAY?!"
Dabi looked shocked by this sort of thing, though he could see the rage from her leave her suddenly. Tears started to form and her body shook. "Y-" She soon choked as she hugged herself, "You're my friend too you know… And the last thing I want-Is to lose someone I care about… That includes you Toya-kun…" Her eyes had been filled with tears at that point, "... I-couldn't bear making that mistake again… Not again…"
Dabi's look softened as Reina only started to sob at that point. For a moment he could see a familiar image of what looked to be a small young boy possessing that of white hair, as all he could do was cry.
The mental image soon passed him by as he let out a sigh. The next thing Reina knew, found that Dabi was hugging her; her heart seemed to have calmed down.
"I get it kid-" Dabi said, giving her a pat on the head, "-I get it. But quit looking so afraid. Like I told you-I've been doing nothing but surviving long before we met. Not that I don't appreciate it, but you don't have to worry about me all the time. That's kind of my job when I'm protecting you-As someone who respects your mother… And as your friend."
She could feel her anxiety there in her chest, though at the same time, it seemed to have subsided as she returned the hug, feeling a faint little warmth.
"I never knew-" Reina thought, "-Someone like Toya-kun could be so kind. He seems cold and ruthless from appearance alone, but in truth… He has a compassionate heart, once he warms up to someone. If-" Her look softened slightly, "-If he really is a man that kills other people… Could… I help him change? If I return to the city with him…?"
GROWL, GROWL-Went her stomach suddenly as it had startled them both. Reina couldn't help but laugh sheepishly, "I-Guess in all the craziness I forgot about food."
Dabi only smiled at this before giving her a pat on the head as he broke from the hug, "Yeah-It's easy to forget stuff like that." He soon stood up, "Wait in here for a second-I'll see if there's anything that looks remotely edible."
"W-Wait-" Reina said, "-I should-"
"No, you got yourself sick again with what you did back there." Dabi said, before he gave her a smirk, "Just sit tight Firefly. I'll be back soon. And if your up for it-We can play a game to take our mind off of what's outside."
Reina huffed, "You mean like playing Shogi?"
"I was thinking of showing you how to play poker this time-" Dabi said with a shrug, "-But if I find a Shogi board with all of its pieces, then yeah, why the hell not." With that he went down the hall to search for food, or at least a snack. Reina only laid back on the old futon as King set himself up to keep her warm.
She gave him a scratch on the head.
"I guess-This is what it's like to have a big brother." She smiled, as she placed her hand over her chest, "This feeling-Actually feels nice. It almost seems like I'm myself again…" The smile soon fell from her face, as the sudden feeling of dread came back. She could hear the sound of chains rattle in her head.
"... But then again… I shouldn't get my hopes up… Nothing lasts forever…"
"That's not true Rei-chan."
Reina didn't need to turn nor did she need to know who the voice belonged to. It had been the Boy with the Red Hat.
"All happy endings can last for as long as anyone wants. You just have to fight for it."
"... Easy for you to say…" Reina said to the boy, "... You weren't born with a Curse like mine."
"I say it's more of a blessing."
"How?" She said, "All I did was cause nothing but trouble back home-And now everyone in Japan sees me as the bad guy. I tried to pretend to be something I'm not so that the world would accept me as me… But I guess I'm just a monster like they've been saying."
Though the Boy wasn't really there-She could feel his hand over her own, giving it a squeeze.
"Rei-chan-That's wrong… You were never a monster…"
Reina hadn't been surprised when she saw the boy had vanished again. "No-" She said to herself softly, "-I always was one. From the day I was born…"
"Reina!"
Reina had been somewhat startled as she looked towards the doorway. With the lamp that had illuminated the room and doorway it revealed the one who called out her name. Not even the King seemed to have reacted to the new person's presence.
She looked at the person as she sat herself up, as she didn't appear to have a reaction. Even when she looked into those familiar red scarlet eyes.
"... Katsuki-kun…"
