Of Champions and Guardians

A/N: So... I'm honestly trying not to cry as I type this. Nearly two and a half years I've been working on this story, and now it's finished. I honestly can't believe it.

It feels so bittersweet to post this, because on the one hand, I'm a person who has a history of quitting things when the going gets tough (I'm working on it and this story was actually part of that process), so to actually finish I project I set out to do two years ago is unbelieavable to me, and I can't help but feel a sense of pride. But on the other hand, this story got me through some tough times, and I'm going to miss it so much. I love these characters, I love Drake, and I honestly love all of you who gave this story a chance and who've taken time out of your lives to read this.

As always, I thank every single one of you who stuck with me until now. I thank you for reading, and I especially thank all of you who've reviewed. You have sincerely made my day when I'd get an email from the site with a review, some of your words have moved me to tears, others have made me laugh, and absolutely all of your words gave me the motivation to keep going when I wanted to quit writing.

I don't know what else there is to say really, just thank you so much for coming with me on this journey through this grumpy marshmallow's head. Love, and hugs, and kisses to you all 3

I woke up the next morning to quiet giggles and the feeling of soft lips against my cheek, my jaw and my lips. I opened my eyes slowly and was greeted by a warm pair of brown eyes.

I couldn't help the smile that spread on my face. "...Myers?"

"Good morning, husband." She uttered softly.

I hummed happily. "I hope I get to wake up like this every morning…"

"That could probably be arranged." She chuckled.

"You sure know how to wake a guy up."

Myers laughed, tucking her head against my chest. "Last night was… incredible. In every sense of the word."

"Damn right it was."

I didn't know if it was something about my tone or about Myers still not fully processing everything about last night, but for some reason, she burst out laughing. She laughed and laughed until she was literally gasping for air.

"You…. do... good work... Walker."

"Yeah?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah." She wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, giggling some more.

I rolled on top of her and leaned in for a kiss. Myers hummed happily, before wrapping her arms around my neck and her legs around my waist. Our lips met in a heated kiss, before Myers pushed me away, rolling us over until she was on top.

"Myers…" I couldn't help but groan.

"Mmhmm?" She nudged my head to the side with her nose, and peppered my neck with soft kisses. "Is this how you pictured married life?"

"More or less." I cupped her neck and brought her down for another kiss, while I ran my other hand up her spine.

"It's too bad we have to go…" Myers whispered against my lips.

"No…"

"Yes. We have to go visit Olivia, remember?" She pulled back entirely, laughing as she sat upright on top of me.

I groaned. "Don't mention Olivia when I'm kissing you."

Myers giggled. "Okay. But we still have to go though." She pressed a final kiss to the tip of my nose.

I sighed. "I know. What time is it anyway?"

"It's eleven." Myers swung her leg over me, and got up. She raised her arms over her head, stretching with a yawn. "Come on. We should go."

I propped myself up on my elbow, enjoying the view.

Myers turned back and shot me an exasperated look. "Drake, come on!" She took my hand and tugged. "Let's go shower."

I immediately perked up at that and pushed the covers off me. Myers giggled as she led me to the bathroom, cranking the water on the massive waterfall shower. Steam rose from the water, immediately fogging up the glass walls and the mirror. Myers stepped inside and under the torrent of water with a sigh. I stared, damn near mesmerized, as she ran her hand over her hair, the waves straightening out into a black sheet behind her.

Myers rubbed water from her eyes, before craning her neck back to shoot me an inviting look. "Well? Are you coming in?"

We made our way to the hospital, after a quick series of texts in the group chat. The guys were already there, and Olivia was apparently already awake.

When we got there, Myers rapped her knuckles against the door frame. "Knock knock. Hey, how are you feeling?"

"Like death, warmed up." Olivia replied dryly.

Her voice was hoarse and her skin was pale, save for an angry purple bruise on the bridge of her nose that spread out underneath her eyes. And yet, she still managed to shoot Myers her catlike grin.

Myers hummed an 'aww', before crossing the threshold and going to Olivia's bedside. "Can I hug you?"

The Ice Queen rolled her eyes, but gave her a tiny nod nonetheless. Myers grinned, before gently wrapping her arms around her.

I looked at the scene with a small smile on my face, before finally going inside. Liam smiled as he looked at me, before wordlessly getting up. I pulled him into a hug, before going to greet Hana and Maxwell.

"Shouldn't you be on your honeymoon?" Olivia asked, tapping Myers' shoulder.

Myers laughed and stepped back. "Nope, not yet. You're stuck with us."

Olivia once more rolled her eyes, but none of us missed the tiny smirk on her face.

Myers and I greeted the rest of our friends with quick hugs.

"Hey, Hana." I enveloped her in a hug. "How are you?"

"I'm good, thank you."

"Missed your big send-off last night." Maxwell commented, as he pulled me in for a hug.

"Eh… we decided it was better to just slip away…" Myers shrugged.

"Yes, it was quite eventful, wasn't it?" Liam nodded.

"Yeah, it was… overwhelming, to say the least." Myers agreed.

"Will someone be so kind as to fill me in?" Olivia glared at us.

Myers and I raised our eyebrows in questions. We were pretty sure that Liam, Maxwell and Hana would've brought her up to speed by now.

"Oh, um…" Myers cleared her throat. "After your surgery yesterday, we had to go back to the palace and, uh…"

"Soak in your victory?" Olivia lifted an eyebrow expectantly.

"Something like that." Myers sighed. "Announce our arrival, make a statement to the press…"

Smile and pretend that we hadn't just gone through a troubling and traumatizing experience…

"Anyway, the important thing is that Anton is, finally, in custody." Myers finished, smiling softly at Olivia. "Thanks to you, Olivia."

A hint of a blush crept up Olivia's cheeks, but she shook her head.

"Oh come on, Olivia, don't be so modest!" Maxwell told her.

"Yeah, we wouldn't have gotten out of there without you." Myers added, turning to me. "Right, Drake?"

I let out a reluctant sigh. "... Right."

"Ah, well now I'm convinced." Olivia teased, chuckling slightly before wincing.

"Olivia!" Liam immediately stood and gripped her hand. "Are you alright? Don't exert yourself."

The Ice Queen's eyes widened and her blush deepened. "I… am okay." She cleared her throat. "Thank you, Liam."

Myers shot me that look of hers - her eyes narrowed and sparkling mischievously - before meeting Maxwell's and Hana's eyes. They all shared that same knowing look.

Myers cleared her throat. "So, Liam… now that Anton's in custody, can Olivia officially file for divorce?" She smirked wickedly.

Liam's eyes widened. "Oh, um…" He looked back at Olivia. "Yes, of course. I could get in touch with your house's lawyer right away. Or the Royal Family's lawyers if you so prefer."

Olivia frowned. "My family's lawyers probably knew about the whole arrangement."

"Someone's getting fiiiired…" Maxwell sang. We all turned to look at him, and he laughed sheepishly. "Sorry."

Olivia cleared her throat, and she spoke a bit louder now. "In simplistic words, yes. So if I could borrow the Royal Family's legal team, I'd appreciate it, Liam. I'd like to file as soon as possible."

Liam smiled softly and nodded. "I'll make the call." He stood, before walking out of the room.

Myers nodded, turning back to Olivia. "He'll make the call." Laughter twinkled in her eyes.

"Yes, I heard, Camilla." Olivia narrowed her eyes, scowling slightly.

"Okay." Myers raised her hands placatingly. "I was just sayin'... That he'll call… His lawyers… To expedite your divorce…"

Olivia groaned, closing her eyes. A slight blush slowly crept up her cheeks.

Hana cleared her throat and seamlessly changed the subject. "Olivia, are you hungry? Have they cleared you to eat?"

The Ice Queen shook her head. "Not yet. I apparently had some repair work done in my large intestine, so…"

"Ah, right…" Hana bit her lip.

"Did the doctor say when you would be able to?" Maxwell asked.

"The doctor will evaluate the situation right now." We all turned to find Dr. Yonekura at the door. "Good morning, Duchess Olivia, Duchess Camilla, Duke Drake, Lady Hana, Lord Maxwell."

"Morning, doc!" Maxwell waved.

Olivia cleared her throat, her voice hoarse again. "Good morning, Doctor."

"Good morning, doc." I said at the same time as Myers.

"Good morning, Dr. Yonekura!" Myers stepped forwards with a smile, once again shaking the good doc's hand enthusiastically. "I'm so glad to see you, doctor. And I can't tell you how much I appreciated all you've done for Drake, and now Olivia."

"I can speak for myself, Camilla." Olivia frowned, prompting the doc to laugh.

"It's no problem, Duchess Camilla. Now, if you all don't mind… I have to examine my patient."

"Oh, of course!" Myers jumped, and began rushing us all out. "Come on, guys. Olivia, we'll be right outside!"

"Oh, joy." The Ice Queen rolled her eyes.

Dr. Yonekura laughed, before stopping me with a hand on my arm. "Drake, I didn't get a chance to tell you last night… but congratulations. I admit I might have teared up when you read your vows."

I rubbed the back of my neck, but smiled nonetheless. "Heh. Thanks, doc."

With that, we stepped out into the hall to let the good doc examine Olivia. While we waited, we decided to go to the cafeteria to get some food and coffee. We caught up with Liam as we made our way back to Olivia's room.

The rest of the day was spent in Olivia's hospital suite. We stayed with her until visiting hours ended, just talking and keeping her company. At one point, Myers texted her friends, and they came by for a quick visit too. Jaime and Karen walked inside with a giant bouquet of flowers, balloons, and a get-well-soon stuffed wolf cub.

"For the fiercest, most badass Duchess I've ever met!"

Olivia was, clearly, a bit surprised that all of Myers' friends showed up to visit her, but I could tell that deep down, she was… happy. She'd said last night that Myers was the first friend she'd ever had, but clearly she wasn't the only one anymore.

The next morning, we made our way back to Valtoria. Myers was really torn about leaving; she didn't want to leave Olivia alone in the hospital, but she also didn't want her family and friends to leave without seeing the Duchy and the estate. Olivia finally convinced her, in no uncertain terms, that she'd be fine and didn't need Myers 'fussing over her like a mother hen'.

Liam wouldn't be able to come to Valtoria with us this time, since he was busy with Anton's trial, as well as capturing the rest of the conspirators; and Hana and Maxwell also agreed to stay in the capital to keep Olivia company until she was released from the hospital. Between the three of them, they were able to reassure Myers enough that she felt comfortable going back to Valtoria. Myers' parents and my mom's jaw dropped as soon as we got out of the car.

"Holy crap..." Wendy uttered, taking her sunglasses off and placing them on top of her head.

Myers laughed. "Those were my exact words when I first saw this place."

"Milla, is this seriously your house?" Hailey asked, her jaw dropping.

"It is."

"That isn't a house, Hailey. That's a freaking castle." Jacob said.

We laughed and gave them the tour, all the way from the stables to our balcony.

Later that day, we were introduced to Sophia, who was Gladys' second in command, and naturally the next choice for the estate's majordomo. Myers and I interviewed her, mostly to get to know her and to make sure she hadn't known about Gladys' involvement with the Liberation Core and her betrayal. Sophia seemed to be telling the truth when she admitted she didn't know about Gladys' betrayal, and after Mara did a quick background check on her, Sophia was officially appointed as our new majordomo. She surprised us both, being just as efficient as Gladys, though she was a lot more bubbly and chatty. Unsurprisingly, Myers took a liking to her instantly.

The next few days after arriving in Valtoria was jam packed with tours and activities with our friends and family. We took them horseback riding through the trails, and hiking through the mountains, and to Myers'- our menagerie. We took them into Ardestan, the city just as lush and vibrant as the last time we visited. One night, we even went clubbing in Ardestan with Myers' friends. We were, thankfully, not recognized that night, and it felt great to let loose and enjoy a semblance of normality.

All in all, Myers and I tried our best to make their last week in Cordonia one to remember.

When the day they had to leave finally arrived, we took them all to the airport in a stretch limo. Myers cried as she hugged her parents and all her friends. My mom cried as she engulfed me in a massive hug. All of Myers' friends hugged me goodbye warmly, clapping my back and repeating how happy they were for us.

Victor also hugged me, clapping my back. When we pulled apart, he said, "You know… I had a feeling about you, Drake, the first time we talked on the phone."

I chuckled nervously. "Really?"

"Really. Milla didn't sound as happy or as relaxed when she talked about the prince. But when she talked about you…" He blew out a breath in a soft whoosh.

I couldn't help but blush.

Victor cleared his throat. "But I'm glad. I don't think she would have been happy being Queen… or with Liam. But with you, Drake… I know you make her happy… As happy as she's ever been."

I nodded. "That's the goal, sir. Every day."

He nodded and clapped my shoulder. "You're a good man, Drake. And I'm proud to call you my son."

My chest literally tightened at his words, a mixture of pride and humility flowing through me at the same time. I cleared my throat, moved. "Thank you, sir."

He nodded, before letting my arm go. We turned to find Myers staring at us, a hand over her mouth and her eyes shining with unshed tears. Without a word, she wrapped her dad in a long hug. With whispered 'I love you's, they pulled apart. Myers stepped back to wrap an arm around my waist, and I wrapped my arm over her shoulders.

Finally, after a final set of goodbyes, we watched them all go through airport security, until they disappeared from view.

Myers' chin began to quiver slightly, and so I hugged her tighter and held her on the ride back.

The day after Myers' parents, my mom, and Myers' friends had left, we received the following invitation:

"To Duchess Camilla and Duke Drake,

House Nevrakis formally invites you and your closest allies to Lythikos Keep for our traditional holiday festivities.

The Nevrakis family was once known for its hospitality and not for... unfortunate recent events.

So let's forge new memories together.

I hope you'll choose wisely and join me.

Your ally,

Duchess Olivia Vanderwall Nevrakis"

Myers and I looked at each other. Between the whirlwind of the wedding and the last couple of days, we honestly hadn't even talked about what to do for the holidays. Since our families and friends had just left, I figured we'd either travel back down to the capital to spend it with the guys, or we'd just spend them alone, just the two of us.

Anyway, Myers immediately called Olivia, and after the fourth missed call, the Ice Queen finally picked up. We found out she had, in fact, been released from the hospital, and that she really was inviting us to Lythikos for the holidays.

And so, off to Lythikos we went, meeting up with Liam, Hana and Maxwell on the road.

The week started off a bit, er…

In all honesty, it was touch and go there for a while. Since it had only been a couple weeks since our wedding, Anton's attack, and Lucretia's part in it, was still on most of the court's mind. So much so, nobody arrived that first night, except for us.

But between all of us, we managed to make a party out of it and cheer Olivia up.

We had a picnic in the ballroom. We felled a talon tree. We helped Olivia with the outdoor festival. We helped her find her house's ancestral sword, the Flame of Lythikos and invite the Duchy's citizens to the winter feast. We all made statements to the press about how honored we were to be there - even me.

In the end, the rest of the court did show up. Most of them at least. Bertrand and Savannah made the trip up with Bartie. Regina, Leo and his wife, Olivia, arrived shortly after. As did the Ebrims, the Amaths, and the Therons. They all apologized to Olivia for missing the ball.

The Ice Queen raised an eyebrow, and we were all prepared to watch her tell them all to go to hell, but… she actually managed to squash that instinct down and welcomed them, graciously accepting their apologies.

Liam grinned, a hint of tenderness in his eyes, as he congratulated her. "You handled that like a diplomat."

Olivia rolled her eyes, a soft blush creeping up her cheeks. "And now I need a drink."

Myers shot me a sly look, and I knew exactly what she was thinking. I just shook my head. I honestly thought that whatever happened between them - if anything ever did - was their business. Even though it was kind of obvious that if anyone had the chance of melting down the Ice Queen's walls, it was Liam.

Anyway, that was how Myers and I spent our first Christmas as a married couple.

At the feast, we ate, we danced, we snuck away like we always do. All in all… not bad. Not bad at all.

We arrived back at Valtoria after New Year's. That night, with Myers fast asleep next to me, it finally hit me that Myers and I were finally… alone.

Since our wedding.

Everything had been such a whirlwind since the wedding, what with Olivia's surgery, the upcoming trial against Anton, touring the Duchy with our family and friends, Lythikos and the holidays…

But now… we could breathe. We could spend time together, just the two of us. Our honeymoon wasn't up until a month from now, but we could get a headstart on it now!

I looked at Myers' sleeping form, before looking at the mountains outside, and an idea began to form in my head.

"Next time we go camping, how about we do it without the rest of them?"

"I'm in."

I woke up the next morning just past dawn, and ran down to the kitchen to make breakfast. The chef, Paolo, and Sophia startled when I ran inside.

"Your Gr- I mean, Drake!" Sophia smoothed back her hair. "Um, do you need anything?"

"We were just talking about what to make for breakfast…" Paolo added.

I shook my head. "Oh, uh… no, it's fine. I was gonna make something quick for me and Myers."

They both looked at each other.

"Not to worry, Drake, I can do that for you." Paolo smiled kindly, a bit of sarcasm in his tone. "It is, quite literally, my job."

"Oh… right…"

It's gonna take a while to get used to that.

"What can I make for you?" He pressed.

"Uh… I was gonna make eggs?"

Paolo perked up at that. "Perfect, Drake! I could make you my world-famous omelettes!"

Sophia hummed in agreement. "Paolo's omelettes are the best! It's a good choice, Drake."

I stared at them both as Paolo immediately began bustling around the kitchen, pulling out ingredients, setting pans on the stove, and dicing some vegetables on a wooden board.

Okay… so much for making Myers breakfast in bed…

"Do you need anything else, Drake?" Sophia asked.

"Uh… no. Guess not." I shrugged, a bit bummed.

"Do you have any plans with Camilla for today? Perhaps I could help?" Sophia insisted.

"Uh… Well, I kind of wanted to take her camping…" I rubbed the back of my neck awkwardly.

Sophia perked up at that. "Well, I could help gather everything you'll need! Your packs, tents, sleeping bags, pots, pans, some food… How long are you planning to be going for?"

"Oh, uh… just for tonight."

"Great! Don't you worry about a thing, I'll take care of everything." She patted my shoulder, before purposely striding out of the room.

Paolo turned to me, his wrist working overtime as he beat some eggs in a glass bowl. "I'll have your breakfast sent up to your suite as soon as it's ready, Drake. And I can also arrange a basket of food for you to take on your camping trip. I will have it ready for you before you leave."

"Okay… Thanks, Paolo."

I walked back upstairs, feeling a bit… weird.

I still couldn't really believe this, now that I had some time to settle down. I was used to not cooking when I was getting meals with Liam or Myers in the palace, or when we were all out on tour. But now, I realized we had servants in our day to day life as well.

"You don't have to do that, you know. We have a staff." Myers' words echoed in my head.

We have a staff.

People who would clean and cook for us daily, or gather our supplies for when we want to go camping, or feed Chase… People who would tend to the grounds and the horses…

I sighed, shaking my head.

When I got to our room, Myers was stretching sleepily. Her eyes were closed and she purred and hummed as she raised her arms over her head. She turned, placing her hand on my side of the bed, before jerking her head up as she realized I wasn't there.

"Hey, Myers." I grinned, moving to sit down next to her.

"Hmm…" Myers reached up and cupped my cheek with her palm. She blinked sleepily. "Hey, handsome. Why are you up so early?"

"I, uh…" I rubbed the back of my neck sheepishly. "I wanted to surprise you with breakfast, but…"

"Aww…" Myers propped herself up on her elbows, looking around. When she realized I wasn't carrying any food with me, her eyebrows furrowed quizzically. "But…?"

"But… Paolo sorta beat me to it."

Myers stifled a laugh against the back of her hand, before laughing wildly. She wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me down on top of her. "Aww… honey. Paolo beat you to it?"

I chuckled, bracing myself on top of her with my forearms. "Uh… sort of. I walked into the kitchen and he sort of explained to me that it was his job to cook, and began making breakfast."

"Awww, he was staking his claim on the kitchen?"

"I guess." I shrugged.

Myers leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to my lips. "Well, then… It appears we have some free time before breakfast, then."

Her kisses ran down my jaw and my neck, as she draped a bare leg over my hips. Her hands ran over my shoulders and my back, and I tipped her chin back up to meet her lips with my own. Myers hummed appreciatively, before moving to push my shirt up my torso. I reached up and tugged on my shirt, pulling it over my neck. Myers' eyes widened, a greedy gleam in her eyes as she ran her hands over my chest. She moved to unbutton my pants and pushed them down, as I kissed her neck, running my hands up her outer thighs and cupping her ass.

Myers moaned. "Dra-"

We were interrupted by a knock on our door. We both looked at each other, and groaned.

"That's probably Paolo. With breakfast." I said.

Myers sighed. "Yeah…"

"I'll get it."

I got up, and Myers pulled the sheets back up to her chest. When I opened the door - just one of them, and only slightly opened it, since Myers was still naked on our bed - a butler was standing there with an enormous tray.

"Good morning, sir."

"Uh, morning. And thank you."

"Of course, Your Grace." He seemed to sense that he couldn't come in, and carefully handed the tray to me.

I thanked him once more, before closing the door with my foot. I walked back slowly, trying to balance the large tray that somehow held two omelettes, two glasses of orange juice, a cup of coffee and a cup of green tea, two cups of sliced fruit, a small jar of strawberry jam, butter, milk, sugar, and a couple pieces of toast. All of them artfully arranged, of course.

Myers' eyes widened as she took it all in. "Holy crap, Paolo really outdid himself."

I slowly placed the tray on the bed. "Yeah… It's almost overkill at this point."

Myers giggled. "Yeah, I bet you were planning a much more down to earth breakfast."

"Hmm." I hummed in agreement.

"But still, let's not let this beautiful spread go to waste." Myers sat up and took a plate of omelette. She cut a piece with her fork, and hummed as she propped it in her mouth. "Oh wow. This is really good."

I couldn't help but smile - she looked cute when she ate - before tucking into my own plate. The omelette was good. Paolo had filled it with shredded cheese, sliced peppers and mushrooms.

Myers took a sip of her tea. "So… First day back at Valtoria alone… as a married couple. As Duke and Duchess. How are you feeling?"

I swallowed before answering. "I… I don't know. It still feels unreal." I shrugged.

"Go on." Myers nodded, eating a last bit of egg and cheese, before taking her fruit cup.

I sighed. "I don't know… This morning, I woke up and I wanted to make my wife breakfast. When I lived at the palace, most of the kitchen staff ignored me, or gave me a wide berth. But now…"

"Now Paolo sent you back to your room, and sent up a tray?"

I took a sip of orange juice, and nodded. "Yeah…"

"I don't think you should take it the wrong way, Drake… I think our staff only wants to do their jobs well… for us."

"I know. And it's amazing that we have good, hard-working people here for us. But… I don't know. I guess I'm just used to doing things myself."

Myers took my hand and squeezed. "I know. And that's a good thing, Drake. How self-reliant you are. But just because we live here now, or because we have an amazing staff, doesn't mean that you've changed or sold out somehow…"

"I know." I pressed my lips together in a small grimace.

"It just means that… we're very privileged people. But with that privilege comes a great duty and responsibility to our people."

"'With great power'…?"

Myers grinned. "Yeah. That line's iconic for a reason. Just as the people of Valtoria are working hard for us, we'll work just as hard for them."

"Yeah, we will." I squeezed her hand back, before downing the last of my orange juice.

Myers smiled and tucked back into her fruit cup. "I know… it seems… overwhelming now… and surreal… but we'll get used to it. Hell… we could even give… our staff a week's… paid leave every month… and have this whole place to ourselves. Or… you could build us… that cabin in the woods… and we could go there for the weekends and stuff…"

I smirked. "You know what? I think I will. We'll need a dose of normality every now and then."

"Good. And when you've built it, you're free to make me breakfast in bed every morning we spend there." Myers grinned, done with her fruit cup and going now for her orange juice.

"Heh. Deal, Myers." I fumbled with my fruit. "So, listen… speaking of… doing our best for our people and stuff… I was thinking… Actually, y'know what, it's probably not even a good time - we haven't even gotten settled yet and-"

"Drake!" Myers cupped my cheek softly. "Ssh. What were you thinking? …You can tell me."

I sighed. "I was thinking… if I'm going to be a Duke… Well, I don't really know what I'm doing. So I thought maybe… it'd be good for me to… go back to school…"

Myers' eyebrows shot up.

"But it was a dumb idea, and I'm probably too old now, anyway."

"Babe, no! Are you serious? No! I mean, yeah! It's a great idea!" Myers pulled me in for a hug.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah! Drake… there's no shame in wanting to better yourself and get your diploma." Myers smiled softly.

"Yeah, but… I don't know. We have a Duchy to learn to run and-"

"Well, that's all the more reason to do it." Myers argued.

I sighed. "I don't know… It was just a thought."

"Well, then, you keep thinking about it, and if you decide you want to do it, then I support you."

I smiled softly, and cupped her cheek. "Thanks, Myers."

"Heh. Always, Drake."

We finished our breakfast, laughing and talking. Once we were done, I took the tray back to the kitchen myself, despite protests from two different servants who saw me walking down the hall and tried to take it from me.

"Sir, please, you don't have to do that!"

"Thank you. Really, I appreciate it. But it's fine. Don't worry about it. Uh, please."

When I made it back to our room, Myers was already in the bathroom. Steam wafted out from inside, and I could hear her singing underneath the steady stream of rushing water.

"Myers?"

"Come join me!"

I shook my head, but still took off my clothes and joined her in the massive shower. Myers grinned at me as she pushed me underneath the torrent of hot, damn near boiling hot water. I got my hair wet, before stepping out from underneath it. Myers rolled her eyes as she shampooed her hair, before running her lathery hands over my hair.

After all the rinsing and conditioning and whatnot, Myers giggled as she wrapped her leg over my hip. "So… we were in the middle of something earlier?"

Without another word, she cupped my neck and pulled me in for a searing kiss.

But… We really had to get going if we were going to make it to the camp spot I'd picked out last night.

"Myers…"

"Ssh." She silenced me with another heated kiss.

"Myers…"

She groaned, clearly annoyed. "Don't 'Myers' me."

"But-"

"But…? Don't say 'but'. I'm having too much fun for 'but'."

I leaned towards her, nudging her nose with mine. "I have a little surprise for you… but you'll need to get dressed first."

Myers raised an eyebrow. "A surprise?"

"Uh-huh."

She narrowed her eyes, but relented. "Fine."

I turned off the water, and we both stepped out of the shower, toweling ourselves dry.

Myers walked out of the bathroom and into her enormous walk-in closet. After a moment, she called out, "Any hints to what I'm supposed to wear for this surprise of yours? Are we talking fancy ball gown, laid-back jeans and sweater, or comfy hiking gear?"

"Comfy hiking gear." I told her, going to my own, ridiculously large, practically bare closet, to get dressed.

Once I was ready, I also pulled a tie from the tie drawer. I have a tie drawer now… It was practically empty, but it was there. After getting dressed, I stepped out to find Myers wearing a skin tight, light blue base layer top and black leggings. On the bed, she'd laid out a blue hoodie, and a light gray jacket.

"How's this?" She asked, twirling for me.

"You're beautiful."

"Aww, you're sweet." She grinned. "And tragically less naked."

I couldn't help but laugh. "I could say the same about you." I wrapped an arm around her waist. "For now, we'll just have to look forward to the next time we can throw off our clothes."

Myers ran her hands up my arms up to my shoulders. "Ooh, well it better not be too long from now."

"It won't be." I pressed a quick kiss to her lips.

"Good."

Myers pressed a kiss to my cheek, before she finished getting dressed. "So, are you ready to tell me what you're planning?"

I grinned. "The fastest way to find out is to put this on…" I held up the black silk tie. "Do you trust me?"

Myers rolled her eyes. "At this point in our relationship, what kind of question is that?" She turned around and I fastened the tie over her eyes.

"Oh my god! Do you have another foal waiting for me in the stables?!" Myers squealed.

I laughed. "No, not this time."

I led her carefully down the stairs, through the main hall, and when we got to the foyer, Sophia was waiting for me.

"Uh… one second. Don't move." I told Myers.

"O...kay." She grinned.

I walked up to Sophia and she whispered, "Your packs are already in the trunk of the car. We packed your sleeping bags, extra gear, and Paolo packed you a basket full of food. All for one night out." She winked.

"Heh. Thanks, Sophia."

"Your welcome, Drake. Have fun!" She walked right past me and patted Myers' shoulder. "Have fun, Camilla!"

"Oh, uh, thanks Sophia!" She waved blindly.

I chuckled and took her hand. I led her outside, past the bridge, and into a black car. I opened the door for her, and helped her in.

"Careful… watch your head."

"Heh, thanks." She laughed and sat inside the car.

I walked around the car and got inside. We drove away, taking the highway up to the mountains. We got to the Valtoria National Park, and I parked the car and stepped out to pay the entrance fee. Once I got back, I helped Myers out of the car.

She took my hand, her head raising towards all the different sounds - the wind rustling through the trees, birds singing and whatnot - and she sniffed the air. It smelled clean and fresh, pure mountain air.

Myers smiled softly. "Are we…?"

I took off the blindfold, watching as she blinked and smiled as she looked around. I popped the trunk, and lifted our backpacks.

"I know our honeymoon is in a few weeks from now to some tropical paradise, what with Cordonia recovering and Anton facing trial… It's gonna take a little while for us to get there yet. So, I thought, if we can't have our full honeymoon just yet… maybe we can have something special in the meantime. And in what better way than in our Duchy? In our home."

Myers smiled sweetly. "Awww. You're the best!"

She took a pack from me and hefted it over her shoulders. I did the same, and Myers took my hand.

"Let's go, husband."

We hiked up the trail, hand in hand. Since it was a weekday, the trails were mostly empty. We didn't see many people - a couple families, a couple teenagers likely ditching school… Thankfully, in such a big beautiful place like this, everyone was minding their own business and no one noticed us.

It was the dose of normality we both needed since the past, well… month.

When the sun was high in the sky, a couple hours past noon, we finally reached a secluded clearing, a little ways off the trail. Myers grinned at me as I got into what she called 'camping mode', but tried to help me set up camp nonetheless. She unpacked our tent, and I built it. She gathered dead wood for a fire, and began placing heavy rocks around it, so we wouldn't start a forest fire. Then, I built the fire, while she unpacked a bit of food Paolo sent us.

After we were done, we both cuddled up on a blanket in front of the fire, steaming cups of coffee and tea in our hands, and a nice spread of food laid out in front of us.

This was perfect, I thought, as I held Myers and she rested her head on my chest.

"Is it really just you and me here?" Myers asked, taking a sip of tea from her thermos.

I chuckled. "After a week of socializing, is it really so hard to believe I wouldn't want a bunch of other people around? Now, we can't exactly reserve this clearing, but it's secluded enough that most hikers will walk right by it without a second thought."

Myers nodded. "You really thought this through…"

"Mostly." I chuckled. "Now… wanna makes s'mores?"

Myers grinned, and pressed a kiss to my jaw. "I thought you'd never ask."

I dug through the bag of food Paolo had made for us, and quickly found the marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers on top of everything else. Wow, he really knows us well…

Myers reached out to take the bag of marshmallows, and opened it. She took a couple of them, and impaled them on the skewers Sophia had packed for us, before tipping them down dangerously close to the fire.

I cleared my throat. "Here. Let me."

I reached out to take the sticks from her, but she yanked them away.

"I'm not going to burn them." Myers rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, you are. And I don't want my wife to get treated to burnt s'mores."

Myers narrowed her eyes, but sighed. "Fine."

I got to work, turning the sticks to get the marshmallows lightly and evenly toasted. With my other hand, I set up the graham crackers and the chocolate bars. When the marshmallows were done, I set to work preparing the s'mores. Finally, I presented Myers with a perfect s'more.

She took it and stuffed it in her mouth, closing her eyes and moaning. "Ohmygod…"

I couldn't help but laugh, wiping a bit of melted chocolate from the corner of her mouth. "Good?"

Myers nodded enthusiastically, and swallowed. "Try perfect. Thank you so much for putting this together for us." She leaned in to press a light kiss to my lips.

We cuddled into each other and got back to eating our chocolatey treats in silence. We were surrounded by trees, the clearing big enough just for our tent and our fire. The cool mountain breeze weaved and whispered through the trees, rustling their branches and carrying sounds of birds and other critters. The fire in front of us cackled warmly. On the horizon, we could still see a gorgeous view of the rest of the mountains and the valley beyond.

I sighed.

This was perfect. Just me and my wife, alone in nature.

Myers finished her s'more, and rested her head on my chest. "So… breakfast, s'mores, a miniature honeymoon in the mountains… You really have thought of everything. What comes next?"

I shrugged. "Whatever you want. If it's too cold for you, we could go back to Valtoria if you want."

Please say no.

Myers huffed and brought her hand to her chest in a dainty show of offense. "Why, Drake, I'm offended at the implication that I can't handle camping out for one night. Besides…" Her eyes gleamed mischievously. "I know we can find other ways to keep each other warm."

I raised an eyebrow, and leaned closer to her. "Yeah?"

"Yeah." Her tongue darted out to wet her lips, and she lifted her arm over me, her face an inch from mine… as she reached for the bottle of whiskey behind me. "Like this whiskey you brought."

She laughed, her smile teasing, and light, and relaxed.

I groaned. "You're the worst, Myers."

Myers opened the bottle and took a swig. A bit of whiskey dripped down her chin, but she wiped it quickly, and offered me the bottle. The light streamed from the trees just so, and the diamond on her finger caught the light. It glinted softly, a stark contrast to the simplicity of the forest.

And despite the fact that we'd been married for a week now… it was still pretty unbelievable to see my ring on her finger.

"We both know you don't mean that." She giggled.

I shook my head, fighting a smirk, and took the bottle. I took a sip, the whiskey burning nicely as it made its way down my throat.

I sighed contentedly. "No, I don't."

Myers grinned triumphantly, and snuggled closer into me. She ran a hand on my chest teasingly.

"Come on, Myers." I caught her hand, and interlaced our fingers. "You know you're all of my weaknesses."

Her gaze softened, and I cupped the back of her neck. I brought her in for a sweet kiss that soon turned hungry. Myers swung her leg over mine and straddled me, running her fingers through my hair.

When we pulled back, both of us breathless, Myers merely looked at me and said, "Tent?"

I nodded. "Tent."

I stared up at the ceiling of our tent, as Myers and I caught our breaths.

"Wow, Myers, just… wow."

Myers giggled, and cuddled into me. "Drake… my marshmallow."

Now it was my turn to chuckle. "I kind of like it when you call me that." I admitted quietly. "I like having things for just the two of us."

Myers propped her chin on my chest and smiled. "Yeah?"

"Yeah."

"Aw… I'm glad. And I'm glad we had this time together. It's been unbelievably perfect."

I couldn't help but blush a bit, for some reason, and cleared my throat. "Don't mention it. It's… our first full day alone as a married couple, and, well… I wanted to do something nice for my wife."

Myers squealed softly, burying her face in my chest, her feet kicking lightly in excitement. "I'm never going to get tired of hearing you say that."

"I'm never going to get tired of saying it." I turned so we were nose to nose, and curled my arm around her waist. "Every time, it just reminds me how lucky I am to be with you."

"I'm lucky to be with you too, Drake." She whispered, her eyes drooping slightly. "I still can't believe how lucky I was to find such a perfect man."

"I'm not perfect, Myers."

She clicked her tongue. "Well, of course not, no one is. But you're the perfect man for me, Drake."

"Heh. You're perfect for me too, Myers."

She hummed quietly, her eyes fully closed now. "Hmm. Hey, Drake?"

"Yeah?"

"I love you."

I pressed a kiss to her forehead. "I love you too."

With a small smile, she fell asleep in my arms, and I fell not long after.

And so the weeks passed, with Myers and I still caught up in honeymoon bliss - even though we still had to go on our actual honeymoon.

We settled into Valtoria nicely. The first week, we barely left our room. The second week as well, to be honest. Sophia told Myers not to worry, because she was content to handle running the estate, until we were "ready" to start with lessons on that, but for now to simply enjoy our honeymoon. The staff were content to send up food and an embarrassing amount of clean linens, which was exactly what made us realize we had to leave our room and venture outside.

And so, we went outside. We went hiking a lot, and horseback riding. We ventured into Ardestan, for lunch or dinner, or just to walk through the city. In short, we were able to catch our breaths and enjoy each other's company.

But of course, it had to end at some point.

A week before we were set to leave for our honeymoon, we got a Royal invitation in the mail.

"His Majesty, King Liam, formally invites the Duke and Duchess of Valtoria to the Royal Palace, on the 25th of January, 2019.

A boutique appointment has been made for you both, at 11:00."

Hand-written underneath in elegant script read, "Please dress appropriately, both of you. Duke Drake, no denim."

Myers and I looked at each other, and she burst out laughing. "You got that?" She wiped her eyes as she was done.

"Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. So when do we leave, on the 24th or early on the 25th?"

"Wait, on the 25th?!" Myers asked. "That's the day we're supposed to leave for our honeymoon!"

I shrugged. "We leave at night… According to this, we're expected at the palace in the morning. And the airport's closer to the capital than to Valtoria, so…"

Myers sighed. "I know... Do you know what this is about?"

I shook my head. "No. Liam hasn't mentioned anything to me."

Myers raised an eyebrow. "Babe, have you even talked to Liam the last couple weeks?" She shot me a smirk.

I chuckled. "Well, no. I have been a little distracted by my gorgeous wife." I wrapped an arm around her waist, and pulled her closer to me.

"Heh." Myers wrapped her arms around my neck. "We have been a little isolated recently. It'll be good to see our friends before we leave for our honeymoon."

"If you say so, Myers." I leaned in, our lips a breath away.

"But we should take advantage of our last few days alone…" She ran a finger down my chest.

I picked her up, and she wrapped her legs around my waist. I walked towards the bed and laid her down. "I couldn't agree more, Myers."

On the 25th, we drove down to the capital early. It was a four hour drive, but Myers and I made the best of it, listening to music and getting breakfast on the road.

We arrived in the boutique just in time for our appointment, only to find Maxwell and Hana there as well.

"Hey!" Myers squealed, rushing to hug Hana.

"Milla!"

"Drake!" Maxwell pulled me in for a hug.

"Look at you! You look beautiful!" Hana exclaimed.

"So do you!"

"So… I take it the honeymoon's going good?" Maxwell asked, reaching to hug Myers.

Myers merely laughed as she returned the hug.

"Drake, it's been too long!" Hana hugged me.

"Uh… yeah." I admitted sheepishly. "So you guys got the invite too?"

"Yes." Hana answered, stepping back.

"I got one, too!"

"And here I was hoping this would be a solo appointment." Olivia stolled inside the boutique, a familiar envelope in her hands.

"Olivia!" Myers squealed, wrapping her in a hug.

Olivia groaned. "Must you do this every time we see each other?!"

Myers laughed. "Come on, I think we're past this by now. You know you love greeting your friend Milla with a hug."

"I do not." Olivia huffed as they pulled apart.

"Anyway…" I looked around the room. "Whatever this is, I think Liam's in on it."

He was the only one who wasn't here right now.

"Oh, he might be!" Hana nodded in agreement. "I actually saw him leaving the Royal armory the other day, but when I asked, he wouldn't tell me what he was doing."

"Now that you mention it, I heard him talking to Madeleine about some kind of guest list." Olivia added.

"Oooh, what if it's a surprise party?" Maxwell yelled excitedly. "Or some kind of a drill… A surprise party drill?"

Myers shrugged. "Maybe Liam is planning something before me and Drake go on our honeymoon."

"Aw, I can't believe your honeymoon is finally here!" Hana squealed. "How have you two been enjoying the married life?"

Myers wrapped her arms around my waist and looked up to me adoringly. "Marriage rocks! The best part is spending every day with my amazing husband!"

I couldn't help but blush, but secured my arm around her shoulders.

"No more wondering or waiting. We finally get to be together for good." Myers finished.

"Yeah. It's about damn time." I pressed a kiss to her temple.

A brisk knock on the door startled us, before Madeleine walked inside.

"Good. You're all here." She nodded.

"Wanna tell us what this is all about?" I asked.

"King Liam is clearly planning some royal event, but he wouldn't tell me the details. I only know that there's to be a celebration this afternoon."

"Is that why your invitation said to 'dress your best'?" Hana asked.

"And to 'bring no more than two concealed daggers'?" Olivia raised an eyebrow at Madeleine.

"Mine said, 'shirts and shoes are mandatory'!" Maxwell exclaimed.

"'No denim'." I added, causing Myers to snicker.

Madeleine rolled her eyes. "Obviously I tailored each invitation to its recipient."

"Some things never change…" Myers chuckled.

"In light of whatever this mysterious event may be, I expect you all to look presentable for the court." Madeleine instructed. "Grace and the rest of her team are here to do your hair and make-up, Camilla, Hana, Olivia." She gestured to a small group of men and women standing outside. I recognized the make-up artist, Grace, from our wedding.

"Of course." Hana nodded.

"Ugh…" Myers groaned softly.

Madeleine merely raised an eyebrow at Myers, who pouted but sat dutifully on the chair. "This is, apparently, a national event. The press will be there, so you need to look your best, Camilla."

Myers groaned softly again, but nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I know. Okay, Grace, I'm ready. Beautify me!"

Grace chuckled as she stepped into the room with the rest of her team. "Yes, Your Grace. Lovely to see you again."

"You too!"

Maxwell and I watched and waited as the girls got ready. I was honestly surprised by the amount of crap they put on the girls' faces, and I could see why Myers wasn't really a fan. If you asked me, I loved the small freckles on her face, or the way she blushed.

Madeleine cleared her throat softly, looking at us pointedly. She was sitting primly on a settee, staring at us with one eyebrow raised. "While Camilla, Hana, and Olivia are getting ready, you should get dressed… Now."

Maxwell's eyes widened, and he raised his hands placatingly. "Going!"

I got up with a sigh, and reached for the garment bag I'd brought. I stepped into a changing room with my dad's grey tux, and I made quick work with it. I stepped outside just in time to watch Maxwell present Myers with two garment bags.

"I'm trapped in a matrix of possibilities. Camilla, help me pick! Which one looks cooler?" He unzipped the bags and presented her with a black tux… and his squid tux.

"Um…" Myers snuck a look to Madeleine, who frowned. "You should go with the fancy black number."

"Black tie it is! Figuratively speaking." With a grin, he ducked into a changing room.

Madeleine shot Myers a look. "I suppose I should be grateful you didn't pick the squid suit."

"With the way you were glaring at me…" Myers mumbled.

Hana was done at that point, as was Olivia, and they both stood. Hana had chosen a braided bun similar to the one she was wearing at our wedding, while the Ice Queen had actually chosen to wear her hair down in a fiery red braid. Without a word, Olivia grabbed her own garment bag from the reserved section, and ducked into a changing room.

"And what shall we do for your hair, Your Grace?" Grace asked.

"I was thinking an updo? Maybe a braided one similar to the one you did for the ceremony? I loved that one." Myers smiled kindly at her.

Hana, in the meantime, also decided to ask Myers for her opinion. "I love both of these so much. Milla, which do you think looks better?" She showed Myers her flower dress and a black dress.

"Oh, they're both beautiful, but I have a soft spot for your handmade dress." Myers smiled sweetly.

Hana nodded. "You're right. This dress means the most to me by far."

She ducked into a changing room and stepped out less than two minutes later.

"Do you practice jumping into fancy dresses, or is it just a natural skill?" I teased.

"Ha, ha. You did that tie up pretty quick yourself." Hana shot back.

Olivia came out next, her squirts swooshing around her ankles. "Dressing oneself isn't rocket science… but we do make a rather dashing group."

"Aww, Olivia! You finally admitted you're one of us!" Myers teased. "Group hu-"

"Camilla, I swear if you make us hug one more time..." Olivia glared.

Myers raised her hand up placatingly. "Fine, fine… I know you love us." She laughed.

Maxwell finally came out of his changing room. "Oh! I almost forgot!"

He whistled and Chase came bounding into the boutique.

"Chase!" Myers reached for him, as the dog's whole body shook and wiggled excitedly as she scratched behind his ears.

"Your Grace, please don't move…" Grace asked.

"Oh, right! Sorry!" She grinned impishly, before cooing over Chase. "Hey, buddy! I missed you! Yes, I did! Yes, I did! Did you enjoy your time with Uncle Maxwell?"

"We sure have!" Maxwell grinned at her.

"Aww, that's great! Thanks for offering to dog-sit him while we're on our honeymoon, Maxwell." Myers smiled.

"Are you kidding? I love this little guy!" Maxwell scratched the dog behind the ears. "Besides, in all your married bliss, I didn't wanna risk you forgetting to feed him." Maxwell mumbled underneath his breath.

Myers opened her mouth to protest, but Maxwell merely shot her a look.

Myers closed her mouth. "Fine. You're right." She admitted reluctantly.

"I never thought I'd say this, but the dog's actually safer with Maxwell." I chuckled.

Myers shot me a playful dirty look, but said nothing.

"Anyway, I figured this little guy should have a chance to get dressed up too! What d'you think?" Maxwell dangled Chase's tux.

"Sure. If you can wrestle him in that…" Myers shrugged.

Maxwell took Chase, and proceeded to wrestle with the poor dog, until it was dressed in a tiny tux. The dog wagged its tail.

"Do you feel fancy?" Myers asked, bending down to pet Chase. "I'm taking that as a yes." She giggled as the dog yapped.

Madeleine cleared her throat. "It's unbelievable to me that the dog is ready before you, Camilla."

She stood just as Grace finished pinning Myers' hair up.

"Now, come on. Cordonia's most famous duchess cant show up in just anything." Madeleine took a garment bag from a rack and gave it to Myers. "I had one of the royal tailors prepare a dress that uses some of Duchy Valtoria's colors with a classically inspired style."

"Thank you, Madeleine." Myers took the bag, and stepped inside a dressing room.

She came out moments later in a deep crimson gown with gold detailings.

"Wow."

"Excellent choice of colors, if I do say so myself." Olivia nodded.

"No matter what King Liam has planned, you'll be the talk of the court." Madeleine agreed, actually smiling. "Now, all of you need to hurry to the throne room. It's bad form to keep the King waiting."

She turned on her heel, and we followed her to the throne room. The doors were opened, and we were shocked to find the entire hall filled almost to the brim with people.

"What the…" My jaw dropped.

"Maybe this is one of those flash mob things I heard about." Maxwell grinned, looking around excitedly.

"It looks like some sort of official royal ceremony." Hana suggested.

"Whatever it is, I think we're supposed to make our way toward those thrones…" Myers took my hand and we stepped forward.

Trumpets blared and people cheered loudly as we walked down the aisle. Once we arrived in front of the dais, Madeleine quietly arranged us in a line, with Myers in the center. Liam walked down the dais, dressed in his official ceremonial robes.

Myers eyebrows shot up as she saw him, and she mouthed, "Liam. What's all this?"

He grinned impishly and whispered, "All will become clear in a moment." He turned to face the crowd. "People of Cordonia, we have assembled this morning to recognize and pay respect to our national heroes."

"Did he say… heroes?" Maxwell whispered.

I shrugged. "Don't look at me. I'm as surprised as you are."

"Don't worry, Maxwell. If I were you, I'd be surprised too." Olivia smirked.

"Like the legends of old, the brave souls presented before you today have withstood many dangers, sacrificed their safety, and stood strong in the face of those who would destroy us." Liam continued, before looking down at us.

His eyes landed on Maxwell, who squirmed.

"Lord Maxwell Percival Beaumont…" Liam nodded.

"Yes, sir! I mean… Yes, Your Majesty!" Maxwell yelled.

"For unerring optimism in the face of adversity, I hereby dub thee Guardian of the Realm!"

"I…" Maxwell's jaw hung low. "I… thank you!"

"Lady Hana Lee…" Liam continued.

Hana nodded, a small smile on her perfectly composed face. Her eyes sparkled with nerves and excitement though.

"For grace under duress and invaluable companionship, I hereby dub thee Guardian of the Realm!" Liam announced.

Hana dropped into a low curtsy. "You humble me, Your Majesty."

Liam nodded, before his mouth quirked into a hint of a smile as he turned to Olivia. "Duchess Olivia Nevrakis, for your steadfast determination and commendable… if not somewhat frightening… aptitude at arms, I hereby dub thee Guardian of the Realm!"

Olivia's cat-like smirk grew, and she nodded. "Mm hmm."

Liam fought a smile, before turning to me. "Duke Drake Walker, for unwavering loyalty and selfless sacrifice to Cordonia, to its citizens, and to its king… I hereby dub thee Guardian of the Realm!"

I nodded respectfully, still a little shocked.

"Guardians, step forward and be recognized!" Liam summoned us.

At the same time, we stepped onto the dais as people cheered all around us. Cameras and cellphones were immediately pointed at us, recording this moment.

Liam held up a hand, and the crowd was silenced.

He looked at Myers. "Finally, Camilla Myers. From the moment you stepped foot on Cordonian soil, you treated this country and its people as your home and your family. You were promised the chance for a better life and I hope you've found it… But it was us, here, across the whole of this nation whose lives were truly made better. You fought for us. You unified us. You won our hearts."

Down the dais, Myers' eyes welled with tears she refused to let fall, as she held her head up proudly, and nodded gratefully. I smiled at her, and had to swallow the lump on my throat as I looked at my amazing wife. Pride spread through my chest as Liam beckoned her up the dais and raised a large, ornate medallion over her head. Myers curtsied and bowed before him.

"I hereby dub thee Champion of the Realm, the highest title bestowed by the Crown." Liam announced. "This distinction reflects the gratitude of not only the royal family, but our entire nation."

Liam lowered the medallion onto her shoulders, then took her hand and presented her to the crowd. Myers swallowed, her eyes still glistening as nobles and commoners alike cheered and clapped for her. My own eyes glistened, but I quickly blinked any tears away.

Myers cleared her throat, and looked at Liam, and then at the crowd gratefully. "I will strive to prove myself worthy of such a great honor."

"A goal I have no doubt you will achieve both with ease and grace." Liam nodded.

"Thank you, Your Majesty." Myers smiled softly at him.

"Well said, Camilla." Hana clapped.

"Hear, hear!" I heard Regina shout.

"From Everywoman to Champion of the Realm…" Ana de Luca announced in front of a camera. "What. A. Story!"

We stepped forwards to join Myers and Liam, and the crowd's cheers seemed to grow.

"Here, in the presence of such noble heroes, I have one more announcement to make before my people." Liam said.

The crowd quieted, everyone seeming to lean forward to hear what the King had to say.

"I have decreed the formation of a Royal Council, a circle of worthy advisors from common to noble-born, to help guide my decisions. It is my sincere hope that through this council, all who now or will ever live in Cordonia will have a rightful say in its future."

"A Royal Council?" Ana de Luca asked. "But the monarchy hasn't had one in… well… ever. Why today?"

"Anton Severus' actiones were inexcusable, but I believe that he and other groups with similar goals felt the need to grasp at power through violence because Cordonia failed to offer it to them in any other way." Liam explained. "That's why I have formed the Royal Council, a peaceful and productive means of sharing the responsibility of power."

"Have the councilors been chosen?" Ana asked again.

"I'll reveal the council's full roster and the selection process at a later time, but there are some members I wish to announce today… All newly-appointed Guardians of the Realm before me are hereby invited to join as my advisors."

I think all of our jaws collectively dropped at that moment, as another round of applause went through the crowd.

Hana was the first one to speak up. "I can't believe it… a seat on the Royal Council?"

"Just when I thought I was out of amazing titles to tack onto the end of my name." Maxwell mumbled.

I turned to Liam. "Are you sure you want… me? For a thing like that?"

Next to me, Olivia huffed softly. "King Liam was perfectly clear. Sounds like you're about to have an actual job, Drake."

I narrowed my eyes at her.

Liam raised his hand once more. "Duchess Camilla Myers of Valtoria, I hope you will do us the honor of leading the Council. Cordonia… and I… need our Champion, now more than ever, as we enter a new era of peace and prosperity."

Myers blinked once, then twice. I don't think she was able to fully process this, but she nodded nonetheless.

"Wow… I'm speechless." Hana shook her head, as if trying to break out of a daze.

Liam grinned at her. "Hopefully not for long. We need your voice on the Council, Hana."

"When are we supposed to start council-ing?" Maxwell asked. "Also, how specific are we allowed to get with our advice, because I have opinions about the playlists used at Cordonian ball that I need to get out."

Liam chuckled. "There will be time to work out the details soon. But for now, we have a ball thrown in everyone's honor to attend." Liam gestured to the side of the hall, where the massive doors were opened. People crowded as they made their way to the ballroom.

I took Myers' hand and squeezed. "Hey. You okay?"

She nodded. "Uh huh… Still in shock… Immensely honored… In disbelief…"

"You deserve it. My Champion." I grinned as I cupped her cheek.

Myers shot me a teary smile, and pressed a quick kiss to my lips. "Go ahead. To the ballroom. I want to speak with Liam for a sec."

"Sure, Myers." I nodded.

She smiled gratefully at me, and squeezed my hand once more.

I made my way inside the ballroom with the guys.

"Guardian of the Realm!" Hana squealed softly. "Can you believe it?"

"Hell yeah, baby!" Maxwell whooped.

I chuckled. "I still can't."

Olivia rolled her eyes. "You all… deserve it… I suppose."

My eyebrows shot up. She scowled at me.

"Thank you, Olivia! Of course that goes for you as well!" Hana smiled.

Maxwell gasped suddenly. "We need to tell Milla to change the name of the group chat! Something like Guardians! No, Champions and Guardians! Champion and Guardians of Cordonia!"

Hana chuckled and Olivia and I rolled our eyes.

Suddenly, the trumpets flared as Liam and Myers walked in. They waved in a dignified manner, before walking towards us.

"Camilla!" Hana hugged her. "Or should I say Champion of the Realm?"

"It's been 500 years since Cordonia had a Champion." Olivia commented. "I'd expected the next to be a Nevrakis, but I can see how, considering the circumstances, Liam could justify naming you. After all, you did help put Anton away, and you are about to lead the Royal Council… I suppose what I'm saying is… if it can't be me, I can respect that it's you."

Myers chuckled. "For the record, you'd have made an excellent Champion of the Realm."

"I know. But I appreciate you think so too."

"Good. Now shut up and give me a hug!" Myers stretched her arms out towards her.

Olivia sighed, resigned. "If I must."

Myers grinned and pulled her in for a hug. Olivia patted her back awkwardly. Myers moved to do the same.

"Just watch the-"

"Ow!" Myers pulled her hand back. "Was that a dagger in your corset?"

"Heh. Sorry." Olivia smirked. "I dress for combat readiness… not for hugs."

The band began playing the first waltz. Myers stepped aside as Liam bowed in front of Olivia.

"Olivia… shall we share the first dance?"

"I…" Olivia blinked, before smiling softly. "Yes. Of course, Your Highness."

Liam smiled and swept her off onto the dance floor.

Myers squealed excitedly, giggling. "How much are we betting on those two getting together before the end of the year?"

"100 euros!" Maxwell shouted.

"Maxwell, aren't you, uh…" Myers slammed her elbow into my ribs before I could continue.

"But… it's January." Hana pointed out. "Do we really have to wait the entire year?"

"Fine, no betting, but you guys know what I mean!" Myers squealed again.

"They do make a lovely couple." Hana nodded, looking at Liam and Olivia dancing and smiling at each other.

"Yeah… they balance each other out in a weirdly perfect way. The kind, compassionate yin to the fierce and deadly yang…" Maxwell mused.

"I know, right?" Myers agreed, nodding excitedly.

I sighed. "Okay, well… Whatever happens between them - if anything ever does - is their business. So, uh…" I turned to Myers and offered her my arm. "May I have this dance?"

"I'd love to." Myers smiled softly at me.

"I was hoping you'd say that." I took her hand and led her out onto the dance floor.

The music swelled as I led Myers around the room in a waltz.

Myers chuckled softly. "If you told me back when I lived in New York that this would be my life someday… I probably wouldn't have believed you."

"So much has changed since you came here…" I nodded.

"Remember my first ball?"

"I remember I didn't think you'd last." I told her honestly. "That you'd run off in tears by the end of the night."

Myers grinned. "Worrying about protecting me from the vicious nobles here?"

"Believe me, if anyone knows now that you can take care of yourself, it's me." I hook my head. "Spent the rest of the night trying to convince myself not to think about you… not to look at you… Not to want the impossible."

"And why is that?" One corner of her mouth quirked downwards in a sad smile.

"I didn't want to torture myself. If only I'd known what I was in store for."

"You would've run the other way?"

"Never. You were worth every sleepless night, Myers."

"I'm glad you think so, too." She pressed a kiss to my cheek. "And just so you know… You were worth every single sleepless night, too."

"Heh. Thanks."

The song began to wind down, and soon, it was over. We clapped at the musicians, before stepping off the floor.

"I hate to say it, but we should probably make the rounds… spend some time with our friends before we leave for our honeymoon."

Myers sighed. "You're right. I've got some people I've been meaning to catch up with, too."

"I'll see you a little later."

"I'm going to hold you to that." Myers squeezed my hand.

With a final smile, we both went into the lion's den in separate directions.

But I found that now… I wasn't scared or intimidated anymore. I didn't feel less than anyone here.

About damn time.

After greeting members of the Great Houses, as well as several other nobles who wanted to congratulate me, I decided to step outside to get some air.

I found Liam in the throne room, staring at the two sets of thrones in deep thought.

"Liam?" I cleared my throat.

He blinked, before looking at me sheepishly. "Hello, Drake. Or should I say Guardian of the Realm?"

"Yeah, yeah." I grinned and went to stand next to him. "Thanks… for that, by the way."

Liam chuckled. "You deserve it."

"Yeah?"

"Yes, really."

I nodded. "Thanks."

"Of course, Drake." He grinned at me. "You truly do deserve this. You've given up so much for me and for Cordonia."

I sighed. "Yeah, but…"

"But nothing, Drake. You've been there for me ever since we were children. You're strong, smart, and incredibly loyal. I have no doubt you'll excel as a Councilman. You will accept the invitation to join the Council, yes?"

I thought about it.

And the more I thought about it, I realized that this was only possible because of my wife. Because she'd helped carve out a place for me here in court. For all of us commoners. Thanks to her, this place was better. And now, Liam was giving me a similar chance to make Cordonia better. And just like I was infinitely proud of Myers… I wanted her to be proud of me, too. And I wanted to help her and Liam build a fairer Cordonia.

"Yeah. I will."

Liam smiled widely, and clapped my shoulder. "Excellent!"

"Heh. Thanks." I rubbed the back of my neck. "But, listen… if I'm gonna be on the Council… hell, if I'm gonna be a Duke… I was thinking… of maybe going back to school?"

Liam's eyes lit up. "Well… That's amazing, Drake."

"I still haven't decided yet…"

"Well… you should. I know after… the attempt, you never went back, even though you said you would. And while I'll be forever grateful that you stayed, I didn't want you to give that up. So if you decide to go… you'll have my full support, Drake."

I breathed a sigh of relief. "Thanks."

"Let me know what you decide." He nodded, taking a sip of his champagne.

"I will."

We lapsed into silence for a moment, before he cleared his throat.

"I, uh… I asked Olivia out for dinner tonight."

I couldn't help but raise both eyebrows. "Uh…"

Myers called it. I didn't think it would actually happen.

"Wow. You and Olivia…"

"It's only dinner."

"Hey, listen, I'm the last person to judge. If she makes you happy…" I shrugged. "Then I'm happy for you."

Liam nodded. "Thank you. Now, we should get back."

"Yeah, I was just gonna… get some air. I'll see you before we go?"

He nodded. "Of course."

Liam clapped my hand, before going back into the ballroom.

I stepped into the foyer, where I found Maxwell. He grinned as soon as he saw me. "Hey, Drake!"

"Hey, Maxwell." I noticed he was holding something behind his back. "What's that?"

"It's… my book!" He thrust a thick hard-cover at me, that had his face on the cover, and The Royal Romance written in bold letters.

My jaw dropped as I skimmed through it. The 'Foreword by Duchess Camilla Myers' caught my eyes, as well as several chapters. 'Fire and Ice'... 'Fair Game'... 'The Brothers Beaumont'... 'To be a Princess'... 'Reunion'... 'A Monumental Night'...

I skimmed that last chapter, my curiosity getting the better of me.

... He nodded, running a slightly shaking hand through his hair. They both took a step closer to each other. Drake's gaze never strayed from Camilla's face.

'Is this the part where you tell me to stop talking and kiss you? Because I really want to kiss you.'

"Uh… Maxwell, what is this?" I asked, shocked at what I was reading. It was damn-near word for word of what happened that night.

"It's my tell-all! I've been working on it for the last couple months! Remember when I told you guys about my scrapbook in Italy? Well, this was the result!"

"But… But… how? How do you know… this?!"

"Well, duh! Milla helped me write it. She filled in all the parts of your secret romance! It's the heart of the story! And she also pre-read it, and edited it, and stuff…"

That… explained so much.

"But…"

"It's coming out next month! And the best part, aside from the advance my publisher gave me, and all the royalties that'll come after its release… is that we all get to go on a promotional book tour after your honeymoon!"

"What…?" My head was literally spinning.

"You'll come, right? I know all the fans are gonna be eager to meet you!"

I sighed, still in disbelief that our whole story was gonna be public in a month from now. I couldn't believe it. And Myers didn't even tell me...

"Hey… are you okay?" Maxwell grimaced.

I sighed again. "Yeah. I'm fine."

"Okay… Hey, listen, you should read it, when you get the chance." I was about to shake my head, when he handed the book to me. "I think you'll like reading your story from Milla's point of view."

Oh.

I hadn't thought about that.

Maxwell smiled softly at me. "I know you'll like it. Some parts made me cry." He chuckled.

"Heh. Thanks, Maxwell."

"Don't worry about it." Maxwell clapped my shoulder. "Bro hug?"

I rolled my eyes. "Sure."

We hugged it out, clapping each other's backs, before pulling apart.

"Anyway, I should go! Someone's gotta liven up this party! Enjoy the book, yeah?" He shot me some finger guns, before leaving.

I made my way outside, only to find Hana alone in a small side room, sitting at the piano.

I knocked, not wanting to bother her. "Hana? Everything okay?"

She turned and smiled softly at me. "Hi, Drake. Yes, everything's fine. Come in, please."

Hana waved me in and I nodded, stepping inside. Hana got up and we sat on the couch.

"What about you? Are you okay after Liam's announcement?" She asked.

"I'm fine. And you?"

"I'm… a little nervous, to be honest. But they're good nerves?" Hana grinned excitedly. "This will be our chance to do some good for Cordonia."

"Yeah… I know. What did your parents say?"

Hana smiled. "Well… they're very proud of me."

"About damn time." I chuckled.

"Yes, well… At least now, as a member of the Council, I'll have to move to Cordonia permanently. And I'll no longer be so dependent on them."

"I'm happy for you, Hana. You deserve to carve out your own path."

"Thank you, Drake. That's precisely what I want to do." She reached out and squeezed my hand.

"I know you'll do great on the Council." I told her.

"We both will. And I'm so happy for you and Milla. You look very happy together." She smiled sweetly at me.

"Thanks." I grinned, and couldn't help but blush a bit.

"Anyway, I don't want to keep you." Hana stood, smoothing out her dress.

"Heh. Don't worry about it. I was just-"

"Going to get some air?" She guessed.

"Uh… yeah, actually." I grinned sheepishly.

"Heh. I understand. I'll see you later, Drake."

She gave me a quick hug, and left.

When I finally made it outside, I found Bastien and Mara talking outside, laughing. Bastien saw me coming, and smiled.

"Drake!"

"Hey, Bastien. Mara."

"Hello, Your Grace." She grinned teasingly.

"No. Not you too." I shook my head.

"Is that an order, Drake?" Bastien chuckled.

"If you're both gonna start calling me 'Your Grace', then damn right it is." I told them.

They both laughed and shook their heads.

"So… Guardian of the Realm." Bastien looked at me and nodded proudly.

"I guess so…" I shrugged.

"How does it feel?" Mara asked.

"I still haven't really wrapped my head around it, y'know?" I told them honestly. "And to get a seat on the Council… I don't know. It would be a good opportunity to do some good though. I don't know, maybe it'd be my chance to stick up for the commoners at court. You know, the servants, the staff… the guard."

Bastien and Mara shared a look, and I rubbed the back of my neck awkwardly.

"I don't know. I haven't really thought about it."

"It sounds like you have." Mara smiled. "And I think they're all good ideas. We could definitely use someone sticking up for us in there. I think all of Cordonia could."

"Yeah… I know. But it still feels pretty surreal."

Bastien chuckled. "I think that's normal. You know, you-"

"Your Grace." Mara bowed deeply, and Bastien followed suit.

I turned and saw Myers approaching.

"We were just about to return to our rounds." Mara said.

"Aww, I didn't mean to interrupt." Myers pressed her lips together in a small grimace. "Mara, it's okay if you take a break every now and then."

"I'll take a break when you do, Your Grace." Mara quipped.

"Hey, I'm about to take a month-long break in a couple of hours!" Myers quipped back. "So I hope you'll do too."

Mara laughed.

"Anyway… Mara, I have to tell you… Thank you for risking your life for me." Myers told her softly.

Mara nodded, and stood a little straighter. "It was an honor." She bowed, and took her leave.

Bastien cleared his throat. "I should go as well, but Drake…"

"Yeah?"

"You know, you aren't the first Walker to be a Guardian of the Realm."

What…?

"Your father was awarded that honor shortly before he died saving the Royal Family."

"I…" I felt Myers twine her finger with mine, squeezing supportively. "I never knew that."

"Your old man was never one to boast. But I'm telling you now because he'd be proud to see his son standing here today. Not just surviving life at court… but saving the kingdom." He grinned, looking from me to Myers. "And married to the bravest duchess this kingdom's ever seen."

"Aww…" Myers hummed softly.

"Bastien… that means a lot." I offered him my hand, but he pulled me into a warm hug.

"In case it wasn't clear.. I'm proud of you too."

I chuckled. "Yeah, I got that."

We suddenly heard someone politely clear their throat behind us. "I hate to interrupt, but, ah…"

I groaned internally, as we all turned to face Neville.

"May I have a word?" He finished.

"Neville? Sure. I'd love to hear this." I said, sarcasm oozing from my tone.

Neville cleared his throat again. "Indeed. I came here… to this spot where we last spoke… to offer my congratulations. Being named Guardian of the Realm is no small thing. Nor is what you did for Cordonia. I was wrong about you." He looked apologetically from me to Myers. "Both of you. For that… I apologize."

I raised an eyebrow. "An apology, huh?" I looked at Myers, already knowing what she was going to say. "What d'you think, Myers?"

Her lips quirked into a small smile. "Neville… I'm glad you learned your lesson." She turned back to me and her smile grew. "If he can swallow his pride enough to apologize, I think it's worth accepting."

I nodded, and held my hand out to Neville. He stared at it for a second, before finally shaking it hesitantly.

"Apology accepted, as long as you don't ever talk about me or my wife like that again." I warned.

"I assure you, Duchess Camilla and Mister… that is, Duke Walker… I'm a changed man." He let go of my hand and gave us a small bow. With that, he turned and walked away.

"I better make sure he doesn't do anything rash on his way out." Bastien chuckled softly, before tailing Neville.

Myers laughed softly, before turning to me and wrapping her arms around my neck. I wrapped my own around her waist.

"Well." I said, "It's been a hell of a year."

"Ha. That's an understatement. From waiting tables to… this." Myers shook her head in disbelief.

"I used to worry that the longer you stayed here, the more you'd turn into one of them. The kind of nobles I hated." I admitted.

"Oh, believe me, I remember all your dire warnings." Myers bumped my nose with hers playfully.

I shook my head. "Hey, can you blame me? After seeing those people treat me and my sister like dirt for years, shutting us out every chance they got… After so long, I started to only see the Nevilles and the Madeleines. I forgot that this place can be good, too. I never really thought there'd be a place at court for people like us. But somehow, you helped make one. You're the reason I said yes when Liam offered me that Council seat."

Myers' jaw dropped. "Seriously?"

"Giving Liam advice as a friend is one thing, but I want to make a real difference. Stick up for the normal people in Cordonia so they don't ever get forgotten. I can do that on the Council. And with you here, and Liam's support, I actually think the court will listen." I shook my head, trying to fight a blush. "I don't know what's changed more… the way I look at nobles, or the nobility itself. But either way, I'm grateful, Myers."

"Drake, maybe you taught the court some lessons too." Myers smiled softly up at me, brushing back a bit of hair from my eyes. "You're living proof that anyone can make a difference in Cordonia, no matter where they come from. And proof of what real bravery looks like."

"Heh. I could say the same thing about you, Myers."

"Ah, well, I was trying to be modest." She flipped her hair exaggeratedly.

I couldn't help but chuckle. "I used to wonder if this place would ever be a real home. I mean, I had Liam, and a roof over my head, but not much more than that. Now… I finally feel like I can make a life for myself here."

"Aww, Drake…"

"If you're about to call me a marshmallow-"

Someone cleared their throat behind us again. Myers and I quickly stepped apart, to find Rashad.

"Excuse me, Duke Drake? I was talking to several other nobles about developing some of our unused lands. We want to turn them into public space for our people, but we aren't sure what would serve them best. I was hoping a Council member could offer us some expertise."

"Oh."

He's asking me… for help.

Myers squeezed my hand, before letting go. I looked at her and she nodded encouragingly.

"Yeah." I told him, unable to hold back a grin. "I could help with that."

Rashad nodded and began walking away.

"Go show them what a Guardian of the Realm can do." Myers whispered.

"I'll find you later, alright?"

"You'd better."

I pressed a quick kiss on her forehead, before following Rashad, who was respectfully waiting a few steps away.

After a couple hours talking with several nobles from Duchy Domvalier, Bastien came to get me. I hadn't even realized how much time had passed, but apparently, it was already time to leave for our honeymoon.

"Drake, it's time. Your car's outside waiting for you."

"Oh. Thanks, Bastien. If you'll excuse me."

"Of course, Duke Drake."

"Safe travels!"

"I hope you and Duchess Camilla have a marvelous time!"

I nodded in thanks, before walking away. I found Myers outside amidst a crowd of well wishers. Kiara, Penelope, Regina, and even Madeleine wished us a good time. The rest of the court cheered as I took her hand and crossed the lawn. We hugged my sister and Bartie goodbye. Myers hugged Bertrand goodbye, and even Olivia.

As we neared the gate, Liam, Maxwell and Hana were waiting for us.

"Safe travels, you two." Liam smiled, pulling me in for a hug, before hugging Myers.

"We'll see you both soon!" Hana hugged us next.

"Don't have too much fun without me!" Maxwell rounded us out, holding Chase in his arms.

"Oh, you guys…" Myers' eyes glistened with tears. She held her arms up in a classic sign of a group hug.

We all laughed and hugged her.

"We'll be back before you know it." I told them.

"That's a promise." Myers added.

With a final squeeze, we all parted, and the guys stepped back.

Myers scratched Chase behind the ears, petting him softly. "Be good while we're gone, okay?"

The dog barked. Myers and I waved, before getting into the car. The gates were opened, and the streets were full of Cordonian citizens waving goodbye. It was like our wedding day all over again. Myers and I smiled and waved through the windows of our car, as we slowly made our way out of the capital and to the airport.

"I never thought I'd be the guy in the carriage riding off into the sunset." I told Myers, looking at her tenderly. "Much less married to the woman of my dreams."

Myers rolled her eyes. "When will you stop selling yourself short? Council member, Duke… you're a big deal now, remember?"

"Heh. I spent so many years living in Liam's shadow… it's kind of become second nature to me."

"That's not what I see when I look at you." Myers took my hand, staring at me lovingly.

"When you came along, everything changed. I could give up a lot for Liam… but you, Myers… I tried not to fall for you. Hell, I tried to convince myself to hate you. But you're the one thing I could never give up."

"I never gave up on us either."

"There were a lot of times I thought we wouldn't get to the wedding. But the fact that we have, after everything we've gone through… I'd say that's proof that nothing can keep us apart." I took her hand, and couldn't help as my chest swelled when her ring caught the light.

Myers chuckled, a tear running down her cheek. "You're mine now, Drake. Now and forever."

"The 'now' part's been pretty great so far." I wiped the tear away. "Looking forward to this 'forever' part too. What'd you think that's going to be like?"

Myers laughed out of sheer joy. "I'm picturing the most normal duchess and duke Cordonia's ever seen. We'll do some actual good. Stay humble."

"If we're feeling really rebellious, we can even cook our own meals."

"What's that?" Myers brought a hand up to her ear. "Did I just hear you volunteer to plan a coup, overthrow Paolo, and cook all our meals?"

"Heh. Just say the word, and I'll keep us rolling in good, homemade food that you won't be able to resist."

Myers sidled closer, laying her head on my shoulder. "I can't resist anything about you, Drake Walker. You know that."

I leaned in to kiss her. Myers grinned against my lips, and I couldn't help but smile too.

"I can't wait what our future looks like together." I whispered. "I love you."

"I love you too."

I sighed happily as Myers cuddled closer to me. "Is this how you figured we'd end up?" I asked.

"No…" She smiled up at me, the corners of her eyes crinkling and those beautiful dimples deepening. "It's better."
