'for those with the hunger to achieve.'
Chapter 7: Heroes and Villains
"Oh, how I love making little girl's scream."
I stilled, waiting for one of them to make a move. They all chuckled, taking my lack of movement as fear.
"Look boys! This one can't even move her legs!" They laughed, I counted heads. There was a sixth member standing further back than the rest, he was watching me more closely without making a sound. I slowly stood, turning to face the group. "Oh? Found your legs girly? Get back down and beg for me to let you go and I might think about it. 'Course my boys might have other ideas."
The five up fronts looked to be relatively simple. No major muscle mass or hulking builds, but the one at the back was a different story. He looked like he wasn't taking me lightly as he hunched down and prepped for a reaction. I smirked at the other five, then gave them a peace sign as I allowed my body to tip backwards.
"Huh? What the hell are you doing?!" One yelled at me as I allowed myself to fall backwards. I was horizontal in the air before any of the them even took a step towards me, which had me hoping that none of them had a long-distance quirk. I took a deep breath, and as I disappeared over the ledge, I activated my grapple to grab onto a further part of the building. I then swung with the momentum and changed my position to come out on the adjoining side of the building. I came flying out at the enemy and, between the momentum of the swing and the sheer strength of my kick, I knocked one guy clean off his feet before they had even realized I was on the offensive. I swung my staff at the same time I landed and knocked another one across the throat. He stood stunned, but a second blow to the back of the head with a well-timed kick had him down for the count.
"You bitch!" A third yelled. I crouched on the ground to recover from the quick movement, but flipped myself backwards away from a poorly focused punch. My foot caught him in the face and he fell down but not out. I prepped myself, and then ran past the guy to take out casual villain number four. He hesitated when I ran at him, grinning like I'd just been given a sweet from the store. I jumped, tucking my knees in to bring them to the top of his chest. He flew back at the sudden pressure, and I continued the flip forward and off of him as villain number five swiped at me. He completely missed, and ended up hitting his own teammate in the gut. The guy folded and spit up his lunch as I reversed my momentum to slam my heel into the back of the fifth guy's neck.
Once I moved away, I stared at the sixth guy, who still hadn't moved even to help his friends. Without looking I could hear the third guy from before crawling up to me. I swung my staff and slammed the blunt edge into his face.
"This was so disappointing." I commented, watching at the sixth squared up to me. I readied myself, praying for an actual fight.
I wouldn't get one though, as ice spilled all over the sixth guy's feet. I sighed, feeling disappointed as the ice crawled up his legs and arms. He panicked and attempted to flail himself loose, but to no avail.
"Arakawa, right?" I looked over as the owner of the voice approached. Shoto Todoroki. I nodded to him as he came closer, pinching my lips together.
"You're wasting your ice on these guys? They can hardly make a proper fist." I looked behind me to the five guys sprawled out. "It didn't even take me five minutes to knock them out, and I wasn't even really trying."
"Still, it's strange that so many low-level thugs have been brought here." Todoroki turned to look at where he had come from. An ice trail told me he had taken out several others up the hill. It wasn't exactly rocket science to know why the villains were here. They had explicitly told us they were looking for All Might's demise.
"Maybe they expected the students to be weaker? They said they're trying to kill All Might, so my guess is that the thugs were supposed to be for us, which means they have other plans for All Might." I voiced. Todoroki glanced at me, then away again.
"Then the plaza is likely where the real threat remained. If they scattered the students then the enemy is likely waiting for All Might there." He began his descent, and I went to follow. When the ice crunched under my foot though, he stopped and looked over his shoulder. "Stay here."
I felt myself halt in surprise.
"Excuse me?" He continued walking after throwing the order over his shoulder.
"You're in the way." He dismissed. I felt heat rise on my skin as my eyes narrowed.
That little punk...!
"And you're in my way." I said while sliding right passed him on his very own ice path. I used my grapple to attach to a tall building's edge and was yanked from the ground. The momentum allowing me to release the hold and swing about fifty feet before grappling onto a lamp post and over the guard wall of the Landslide Zone.
From my next swing I could see several parts of the battle still going on in the plaza. I could see two villains still up by the fountain, with the hugest bird brain I'd ever seen not far off. Where was Aizawa? I couldn't see him from here, but I could see many bodies littering the area on my next swing.
One of the villains turned towards the water edge, sprinting towards it. My eyes widened as I saw Midoriya, Asui, and Mineta all in the water. They froze, and I hurried my grapple to come in on the next swing. By some miracle the guy covered in hands looked over his right shoulder, and I came swinging from his left.
"Head's up!" I shouted, doing a double barrel kick right into his ribs. He looked my way only milliseconds before I landed my strike. The momentum caused me to slide several feet as he flew a bit further. I used the momentum to get on my feet and slam the staff over his head, but he caught it with a surprising reflex.
I was caught a bit off guard as his fingers closed around my staff and it turned to dust before my very eyes.
Space, I instantly made space and flipped backwards to land near my classmates.
"My hero!" Mineta cried. I lowered my stance, backing closer to the water's edge to get a better look at all of the villains. It was only then that I realized there was a body crunched underneath that big bird.
It was Mr. Aizawa.
"You bastards," I growled, seeing my teacher looking absolutely broken. The guy with the hands recovered, his head tilting to the side as he looked at me.
"Oh, you have a nasty look in your eyes. Are you sure you're not a villain?" His voice is grating my last nerve as I crouch a bit more. "Doesn't matter, you won't be here long enough to decide! Nomu!"
He rushed forward, but I prepared to give him one hell of a kick in retaliation. However, it was cut short as the giant was thrusted in front of me, grabbing my whole calf in his hand. I was frozen for a moment, but he then lifted me in the air. I tried to free myself, but the bird began to squeeze my leg tighter and I flinched.
"You let her go!"
I hung upside down, and watched in surprise as Midoriya jumped from the water and flew over me to attack the black beast. The sheer force was so strong that a windstorm was created. The creature dropped me, and I hit the ground from the unexpected release. After a brief flinch, I looked up to see Midoriya instead in his hold, and the guy wasn't even bruised from such a powerful blast.
"Midoriya!" I yelled, seeing the boy flailing as he tried to release himself. I pulled another staff from my storage, and elongated it. My attention was changed to the smaller enemy though as he made a move for me.
What was I supposed to do? If I made for Midoriya I was dust, like my staff, but if I made for the guy then that thing was going to rip Midoriya in half.
What do I do what do I do what do I do-
I turned and made to release Midoriya from the black creature's hold, and sent a hail Mary kick at the other enemy at the same time. This left me completely exposed as I attempted to pry the bird's hand open. It was a pathetic attempt really, but I had to try.
I couldn't just stand there and-
The doors to the USJ burst open with so much power that the sound reverberated through the entire building. All fighting ceased as we turned to look at the entrance. I dangled uselessly from the enemy's arm, and my left boot had turned to ash around my ankle, but other than that I was unharmed as the symbol of peace came through those doors like an angel out of some fairytale.
"Have no fear students," I felt his rage in just those few words.
"I am here."
And he wasn't smiling.
"Finally," the guy with the hands all over him said, sounding excited. "Our game gets to continue! The heroic piece of trash finally showed up."
Within the next second I was no longer dangling from the bird's arm, and was instead on the far end of the plaza. My eyes widened at the sheer speed All Might had moved us at, and I stared at the others who were with me.
I didn't even see him move...
"Take Aizawa with you back to the entrance! And be safe!" All Might commanded. I didn't have to be told twice as we picked our bloody teacher up. Midoriya on the other hand looked pretty concerned still.
"But-But All Might-"
"Don't worry Young Midoriya, I am here."
"But that brain guy took One for-" he paused and looked at the rest of us, then back to the hero. "I mean, that guy took a smash from me and didn't seem phased."
That was a strange thing to say. Why tell All Might that he, a kid, couldn't put a scratch? Still, I didn't say anything as we moved away, the battle still raging on. I hesitated though when that massive blast came from the battle, expecting so see that brain smashed to pieces, but was horribly shocked to see All Might captured.
It was thanks to the warp gates of that third guy. He had managed to get ensnared. But something else I found interesting was that the bird brain didn't move unless he was ordered to. He had allowed me to hang off his arm without even reacting to me, didn't strike me until I went after his boss who called him to strike me.
Midoriya took off running for the battle, Asui and Mineta freaking out as I too, triggered by the sudden sprint, came rushing after him. From across the plaza, I could see Bakugo and Kirishima arriving. Along with a barrage of ice that coated the field. Bakugo slammed a blast into the smokey bastard, knocking him down, Todoroki froze the bird on his right side through the warp gate and all the way up to just below where he held onto All Might. I sprinted past the others as Kirishima went to strike the man covered in hands. He moved out of the way, but in the second it took for him to right himself enough to dodge Kirishima's strike I had struck at him with my staff. He tried to catch it, but I faked out the swing and instead rested my hand on his shoulder before flipping over onto his back and slamming my knees as hard as I could into his shoulders. He toppled over like a house of cards in a soft breeze, and I landed on top of him with my left knee between his shoulder blades, my right foot holding down his right hand.
"You stupid little-" His voice was cut off as I slammed my staff down hard on the center of his left hand when he tried to move it. He cut off a screech as he ducked his head, whole body trembling with the held in scream.
"Your quirk originates from your hands, right? So as long as I hold those down there shouldn't be a problem!" I leaned on my staff to make a point. He grunted, muttering under his breath, so I took my free hand and shoved his face into the dirt more. "And don't you dare call your nomu. He can't think without you, can he? He only moves when you're in danger or you tell him."
Incoherent screeches could be heard as I held him down. Bakugo threatening the shadowed villain in the same manner.
"Bested... by children." The shadowed man muttered. The man beneath me made no move, but I could feel him shaking. With rage most likely.
All Might freed himself from the grips of that brain guy, but the creature wriggled then, and soon dragged himself out of the warp gate. His body broke down, cells dying as it flopped uselessly on the spot. It gave a strangled cry as it flopped, breaking the ice that held it down. A shiver ran over me as I watched it roll uselessly for a brief moment. The ice finally shattered off its body from the flailing.
It started to regenerate.
"What the Hell?" I whispered.
"You said it had shock absorption!" All Might shouted. I was as lost as he was, watching the bones, muscles, and tendons reform on the body. Skin enveloped the flesh, and in seconds he looked like he'd never been touched.
Did- Did he have multiple quirks? I'd never heard of this before, how was this possible? Was this some sort of super human or something? Or... Did he have one quirk that allowed him to use it in a multi-faceted sense?
I felt the guy beneath me tremble more, and looked down. However, it finally dawned on me that he wasn't trembling beneath me. He wasn't tense with rage or worry.
He was laughing.
I felt a tingle in my fingertips as I looked up. The Nomu was looking right at me as he shifted to sprint. I barely got a chance to tense before the scenery changed so rapidly that I couldn't comprehend someone grabbing the collar of my costume and yanking me along.
Only once I was sitting on the ground, staring at the spot where I had just been, about fifty feet away did I realize that All Might had saved me. I wasn't the only one either, all of my classmates currently involved were all sitting together.
I looked over to see Bakugo and Kirishima just as surprised, with Midoriya staring at all of us in surprise.
"How- You dodged him?" Midoriya sounded confused as we got to our feet.
"Not even close. He saved us." I said, looking at All Might, guarding us from the villains. He'd moved to quickly I could barely react. How in the high hell did anybody move like that?
"You would attack kids like that?" All Might sounded disgusted as he breathed heavily. He looked tired as he stood tall against the villains. It was only for our sake that he stood there.
"So typical of you heroes. I defended myself against these brats. The plain looking one? He tried to kill me with a maxed-out punch. The girl over there? She tried to kill me too, and you should've seen the look in her eye. She'd really do it too."
His gaze shifted to me, and I tensed.
"Yet you call these kids heroes because they stand on the right side of the line. Why are some acts of violence permitted and others shamed? As long as you say you're doing it for others the world thinks you're a hero, and that pisses me off. You get to pass judgement on others just because you're considered a hero? It's disgusting."
My attention was split as I looked from the corner of my eye to the bodies littering the plaza. They were starting to wake up, which meant reinforcements.
"You're not a symbol of peace! Just the government sponsored symbol of violence. And violence will always breed more violence."
All Might tensed, preparing to fight. Part of me wondered if the tension as from the guy's words.
"You're nothing but a lunatic, using pretty words to justify doing what you want because you enjoy it." All Might clenched his fists. The man went quiet, chuckled, then shook his head.
"Oh, you got me there."
Todoroki took a step forward beside me. I glanced at him, to see him staring down the enemy.
"We outnumber them." He said plainly.
"Kacchan and Arakawa managed to subdue the mist and hands guys too." Midoriya piped in. Kirishima grinned, hardening his arms.
I hesitated, looking between the enemies and my classmates. It was true, we had fire power. In an all-out brawl we might win. But the speed of that Nomu guy... That was something I had never seen before. There was no way we could take him on, not without running the risk of getting in the way of All Might.
"We can do this, with All Might's help we can take these guys down!" Kirishima stamped forwards, but a hand held out from All Might stopped us in our tracks.
"Don't enter the battle, children!" All Might declared. I gritted my teeth, knowing full well the most logical choice would be to back off, but I felt a pang of desire to fight alongside the number one hero, if even just once.
It was obvious my sentiments were shared.
"You would've been in trouble if I hadn't showed up." Todoroki pointed out. My nose twitched at the pronounced 'I'.
"And I thank you, but there is no need now." All Might assured us. Midoriya looked nervous though, which was surprising. He was the type to look up to All Might more than the rest of us, so why did he look so worried?
"But-But you're almost out of t-" He cut himself off, and I put a hand out in front of Midoriya as All Might gave a thumbs up. Midoriya looked at me then, surprised.
"We'll only get in his way," I explained, glancing back at the Nomu. "That bird brain is way too fast for any of us. Even if we evade and try to take on the others, they will just call the Nomu back and we'll be in the thick of it."
I looked back to Midoriya, who still looked so concerned.
"Trust in All Might."
We had no other choice.
"Kurogiri, Nomu, you kill All Might, and I'll take care of the children." The guy with all the hands came at us. Kirishima seemed almost pleased, but I only had to take a quick glance at All Might to tell that something big was coming.
"Heads up!"
The shock from All Might and Nomu locking was so powerful that we were all blasted away. I recovered relatively quick, but more blasts were being traded, and I could only sit in awe as All Might sent punch after punch to Nomu. I noted that the boss and Kurogiri were both further away than before, and it dawned on me that All Might was using the shockwaves to keep Kurogiri at bay. He was literally punching the fight out of the villains! And they weren't random punches, each one was carefully chosen, and soon making quite the display as All Might punched the shock absorption out of the bird brain.
I was in absolute awe as All Might sent a finishing blow so powerful that we were all literally knocked off our feet, Nomu being blasted straight out of the USJ Team Rocket style.
Nobody moved for a moment, all of us staring at the aftermath of the epic battle. All Might slowly stood tall and chuckled, as though talking to himself.
"Back in my heyday, that would've taken five hits, and today it took three hundred mighty blows!"
A huge climb in hits, but it surprised me that All Might confessed so easily that he was getting weaker. I looked between the villains and him, and could see the villains backing off. All Might himself was standing in a blur of smoke from his last few attacks.
"You've been bested villains, surrender now!" All Might called. I noted the tone of his voice, aimed to threaten, and thought it was strange. "Why the hesitation? Come at me if you dare."
"As I thought, there is no need for us to be here." Todoroki announced, and I heard him turn to walk away.
"C'mon guys, we should move. Would be awful to be taken hostage, right?" Kirishima called. I stayed where I was, suspicious.
All Might was never one to taunt or threaten like that. Why was he standing there? He could easily just take them out. So, what was stopping him? I looked over to beside me and saw Midoriya looking with the same nervous stare. He knew something, and I had a feeling it was bad.
The enemies were standing up again, and the boys were distracted with defending behind us. I turned to the green haired boy.
"Midoriya-"
The enemies raced at All Might, and I watched as Midoriya vanished from in front of me. The air blast made me slide, and I looked up to see Midoriya jumping through the air at the enemy.
"Don't you touch All Might... YOU STUPID VILLAIN!" He aimed at that Kurogiri, and I saw that a warp gate opened up in front of him. A hand appeared out of there, a very familiar hand that had destroyed my staff.
I remembered my staff turning to dust.
Midoriya would turn to dust.
My feet started to move before I had the chance to think, a burning sensation crawling at my skin. I took aim with my staff, prepared to throw it.
C'mon body! Move faster-
A gunshot sounded, hitting the hand that popped through the warp hole, and I skidded to a halt nearby Midoriya. I looked over my shoulder to see the teachers standing at the far away main entrance. More gunshots were fired, and I turned back to grab Midoriya's shirt and yank him away from the villains as more shots were fired. Likely by Snipe, and while he was a perfect shot, there was no doubt in my mind that the villains would use us as shields if we got too close.
"WATCH OUT!"
I was awed as Thirteen's black hole dragged across the plaza, and the two villains across from us had to leave now or be drawn in.
"Damn..." I whispered. Midoriya whimpered, and I looked down at him. It was only then that I noticed the malformed joints on his body, his legs laying at awkward angles. They were broken, that much was clear. Was it from his jump? It dawned on me then that All Might was not ten feet from us, still standing where he had been before. I turned my head, expecting to see the symbol of peace standing strong.
My body froze when I saw the mishappen form before me.
All Might was a hulk of a man, but the right side of his body looked to be half the size of the left. He had blood dripping from his mouth, and his gaze caught mine. It was strange to see him looking panicked as I stared at him.
"All Might's getting weaker."
The words finally rung true in my head, and slowly, little pieces somehow made sense.
"Isn't your power just like All Might's?"
"I know it doesn't make sense but-but I was quirkless."
"I never lied to you!"
It was like the puzzle was dumped out in front of me, but somehow, I couldn't quite fit the pieces together. Was it possible that Midoriya had somehow gained some form of power from All Might? Why? The kid had noodle arms when I met him, why would he be chosen by All Might himself? And how did All Might learn to pass this power own? We'd just seen a guy with multiple quirks, so passing on a quirk somehow didn't seem impossible anymore.
"Hey! Arakawa! Midoriya! You guys alright?" Kirishima called as he came closer. I stared at All Might for a second longer before turning to my classmate.
"Stay there!" I called, making the boy stop in his tracks. I gripped the back of Midoriya's PE uniform and easily lifted him. "We should probably regroup. I got this guy. Can you check on the others? I'm a bit worried."
The lie seemed to work as Kirishima seemed to remember we had other classmates. He nodded, turning around and running off to the boys. I looked down to Midoriya, who was practically dangling where I held him.
"You're gunna need a lift..." I placed him down again, before kneeling to help maneuver him onto my back.
"O-Oh! Ara-Arakawa you don't need to do that!" Midoriya argued, but I ignored him as I lifted him as carefully as possible.
"How the hell are you getting to Recovery Girl on your own? Just hold on to me, I don't wanna risk rattling your legs so I can't adjust you too much." I gripped his lower thigh closer to his knee, and he squeaked while leaning forward to wrap his arms around my neck. He panicked let go a few times, but after almost falling off my back I finally got him to sit still while he held onto my neck.
I looked to All Might, who had been quiet this entire time.
"You look like you need to see Recovery Girl too, sir." I stated, seeing him in a skeletal state while he stared. He seemed to remember himself then and jolted back to life.
"Uh- Right!" He turned, and I followed him out the back way. A few teachers saw us, and I didn't say anything as he directed us slowly towards where the medical office was. It was silent for the majority of our walk, save for All Might's skeletal glances thrown our way now and again, and Midoriya's winces when his legs rattled more than I intended.
"About what you've seen just now..." All Might began. I looked at him, still walking quietly as he slowed to walk next to me.
It was obvious by the tension in these two that whatever was going on was actually one big secret, and to be honest? It was none of my damn business. I had enough sense to understand that I wasn't entitled to information just because it was laid out in front of me.
"That punch was amazing sir," I started. All Might looked surprised. "I don't think I ever saw anything like it. It was so powerful, and then I had to help my classmate to the infirmary."
"... Right."
When we arrived at Recovery Girl's recovery ward, she looked at me with such intense scorn that I couldn't help but give a nervous smile.
"You again? I told you the next time I see you that you better be a grown woman fighting villains for a living! Not breaking your bones trying out new gadgets your friend made!" She gave me an earful, and I felt sweat linger around my temple.
"It's not for me, I swear!" I defended, shifting so she could see Midoriya better. She took one glance at him and gave me a dirty look.
"So, teaching others to break their bones, eh? Nasty habit to have! Put him in the furthest bed, I'll see to him in a minute." She walked away from us, striking up a conversation with All Might that I ignored out of respect. I did as Recovery Girl asked, and brought Midoriya to the furthest bed.
"You know Recovery Girl?" Midoriya said out of the blue. I hummed as I tried to think on how to get him off me.
"I wasn't exactly a calm child." Was my only reply as I knelt by the bed. It was a bit of a challenge, but I managed to slowly get him off my back without hurting him horribly. I stood again and saw All Might take a seat on the bed next to Midoriya.
"Did-" I cut myself off as both look at me. "Did you need anything else?"
It wasn't what I actually wanted to ask, but like I said, it wasn't my business.
"Thank you, young Arakawa. You were very brave today." All Might praised. I looked to him and gave a quick bow.
"Hard not to show off to the number one hero. Excuse me." I dismissed myself, and turned to leave. Recovery Girl watched me go.
"Are you sure you didn't break anything?" She asked, and I turned to look down at her with a nervous smile.
"No Ma'am! I haven't broken anything in nearly a year. Do I get a gold star for my efforts?" I taunted, only to get booted out of the office. It was worth it though, Recovery Girl was actually quite kind to me, but I imagined it was hard for a woman to watch a child break themselves over and over again.
Like Midoriya was doing.
I numbly thought of how the puzzle pieces were supposed to go, idled through the possibilities of what the picture was on top, but then I halted myself when I realized how desperately I was clinging to the fact that Midoriya...
Midoriya never lied to me.
I gritted my teeth, hating the weak idea that I was so focused on some boy that I would blind myself to the truth.
There was no way that Midoriya had gained All Might's quirk. There was no way that he had actually been quirkless when we met. He was making fun of me; he was using me for some self-satisfying gain. Just like every other quirked kid. They built you up just to tear the rug out from under you, to laugh at you in the end. They were all the same, Midoriya was no exception.
Right?
I lowkey hope this chapter was good enough for y'all. i was reading a review that was hoping she'd kick ass, but honestly was having a hard time balancing the dynamics. Koga is going to be wicked calm under pressure for various reasons, so I like to think that her calmness inspired Midoriya to stay calm... until All might was attacked at the end there.
So, she kinda knows the secret? But Koga's biggest hang up right now is she is tired of being lied to constantly, so she is not gunna be very quick to jump back into trusting Midoriya. But it'll be worth it in the end.
I'm also so hesitant and undecided on an ending, because Horikoshi and I seem to be on the same WAVELENGTH since I had looked at my future notes and they oddly line up with the current Manga. No spoilers, but someone please hug Deku and All Might for me. Anyway, I'm thinking this story will have a part one and a part 2, mostly because I want to make sure the manga is finished before I finish, so that if there are any big reveals I can alter the story to suit the new world laws Horikoshi puts in place. Hoping to have part one done this year! God knows if that'll happen, but it heavily relies on popularity!
Review Responses:
Guest: Tbh, I couldn't really see a reason for Shigaraki and the others to pick up on koga lacking a quirk quite yet. Don't worry, it'll be obvious later on. Yes, tension is good. it came to my mind earlier on that Koga is not the type of person to befriend easily, so her having slipped into a comradery with Deku early on is also a knock at her pride for having trusted someone. If Koga had simply gotten into UA without meeting Deku, I honestly don't think she would've glanced twice at him, which will be touched on later on.
Pikapowerz: I've noticed the trend that the main protagonist of most Shounen anime are not favourited. I can only really think of Ed Elric from FMA being a popular main character people ship with an OC (and to this day he is still my fav character of all time, no shame here). So it's actually become a trend of mine to ship with a main character. Most of the time I watch these anime and desperately want to just give the MC a hug and tell them everything is gunna be okay, which is how 99% of all my main OC's are born! I'm also enjoy searching for headcanons to understand characters more, and am super tired of people wanting Deku to become a badass with an attitude like Bakugo. Leave my poor baby string bean alone! It's because he's so pure that i love him! and Yes, I know that song! Might not be a bad set for her, I also thought Diver by NICO actually suits her, though it might not seem obvious why for a while. I hope this story lives up to your expectations! :D
BookwormStrawberry: I unfortunately have fallen short with that. They weren't much of a fight... which isn't surprising considering how little training they have compared to her.
Thank you all for your reviews. I hope you enjoyed this chapter!
Cheers!
