Chapter Five: Unsure

That night repeated in Keigo's mind on loop, the sound of disappointment in her voice and the hurt in her eyes. Why couldn't I speak up? He could have easily agreed to her terms because he couldn't speak. He was kicking himself for being so stupid. All he needed to do was agree to Luna and everything would have been fine. Luna didn't deserve that and he was just scared to agree. He'd never been in a committed relationship before and he didn't like anyone like this before. Deep down Keigo knew he was scared because of his imprint on her and what she would think. This carried on for the next few days, every time Keigo tried to talk to Luna she would politely brush him off. He tried a few times to corner her off to get her to talk to him but it was short lived cause she would act like he didn't exist. It was slowly driving him insane as she continued to act that way. Although he deserved it after what he did during dinner. Keigo still didn't like this at all. He had been trying to apologize to her countless times but she wasn't listening. Keigo tried to act like it didn't bother him but he was fooling himself.

If talking wasn't working he tried something else to get her attention. Every now and then he would find small things to leave on her desk. Sometimes it was a small gift, a few pieces of candy here or there. He would leave them on her desk before she would come into work. The first time she didn't pay attention to it. The next time she smiled a little. Keigo would try to peek at her more and more. This time he found a small rock that was shaped like a heart. It was a small rock but it made him chirp in delight to himself. He kept the rock in his pocket as he walked into his office. He sat down at his desk, thinking of how to give it to Luna.

I hope she'll like it.

There was a knock on the door and his heart jumped and his wings puffed up but that was short lived. In walked Touya Todoroki, the Cremation Hero and Endeavour's eldest son of the Todoroki family. Touya came around a few times to help during daily patrols with Luna and Keigo. Enji wanted Touya to be working with them to get a relationship established for their upcoming missions together in the future. He was someone that Keigo had to keep his eye on. That man was worse than a flirt than Keigo was and he hated to admit that. Touya would push his way into conversions with Luna and she would indulge him for a bit. Keigo thinks that she was doing it on purpose to piss him off but she was an air head sometimes he didn't know if that was the case.

Luna was indifferent about Touya and Keigo picked up on that quickly. She usually kept her distance from what Keigo saw. Since he knew of her fear of fire he could understand why she kept Touya at an arm's reach. However, that didn't stop Touya's flirtatious behavior towards her. It made Keigo's gut twisted in a jealousy that he never felt before. Touya knew what he was doing. Both of them had a rivalry ever since Touya started his hero career. Endeavor didn't help much with Touya's attitude either.

"Oi, earth to Hawks!" Touya was waving his hand in front of Keigo's face. "Hellooo~!"

Keigo lifted his visor on top of his head with a sigh. "What do you need?"

Touya flashed a smile before running his hand through his pure white hair. "I was asking why you are here at the office. Don't you need to get ready for the Hero Society Gala tonight?"

Keigo froze. "What?"

"Did you forget that it was tonight?" Touya blinked.

Keigo had been so caught up in his own head that he had forgotten about tonight. The Gala was the one thing he was looking forward to because Luna would be going with him. He hoped that she wasn't changing her mind.

Please.

He clenched his jaw. "My mind has been elsewhere in the last few days. Thanks for letting me know."

"Does that mean you'll let me take Luna to the event now because you forgot?" Touya smirked but chuckled when Keigo gave him a glare.

Over my dead body.

There was another knock on the door and Luna walked in soon after. She was in her usual hero costume but she didn't look at Keigo first.

She greeted Touya first.

"Well, well, if it isn't little miss Luna. How are you, birdie?" Touya smiled as he leaned against Keigo's desk.

Keigo clenched his jaw hard.

Asshole.

"I've been alright." she looked away flustered.

"You look tired? Not enough sleep last night?" Touya reached out to touch her arm, gently caressing her skin.

Keigo felt every single feather on his wings perk up in defense.

Don't touch her.

"Umm..." she gently pushed his hand off with a smile. "Yeah, I stayed up too late. That's my fault."

"That's a shame." he smiled at her.

"I just needed to talk to Keigo about tonight."

A small chirp slipped through Keigo's lips and he quickly covered his mouth. What the fuck is wrong with me?

"Oh? Are you gonna ditch his feathered ass for me tonight?" Touya chuckled. "I'd love to walk into the event with a sexy thing like you."

Sexy thing?

Keigo's feathers started to puff up more in anger.

Luna held up her hands with a nervous giggle. "Oh, no. I already made plans with Hawks to go with him a while ago. I would never ditch him for that."

"Too bad." he sighed before looking back at Keigo. "I would have loved to make an entrance with you."

This prick.

Luna looked back at Keigo for a moment, making his heart skip a beat as their eyes locked briefly.

Finally.

There's those beautiful eyes.

"I'll see you guys later, yeah?" Touya raised an eyebrow at Keigo.

"Right." Keigo responded cold and bitter.

Touya gave them both a wave before he left the room and shut the door behind him. It was just Keigo and Luna in the room alone, the first time in days that they have been remotely this close. He looked up at her with a frown, knowing she was going to be distant with him still. His feathers slowly started to settle down as he let out a sigh. Luna stood in front of him with her eyes looking away from him. The air around them was awkward but Keigo tried his best to smile.

"Do you have everything you need for tonight?" Keigo raised a brow at her.

Luna didn't make eye contact. "I think so. Can I be let go early today so I can get ready for tonight, sir?"

"Of course. You should probably get a nap in before you get ready. Since you had a rough night."

"I'll try." her response was short and Keigo's heart ached.

Fuck, stop treating me like this.

"Hawks, what do I say to the reporters at the event if they get the wrong idea?" she rubbed her arm.

"Wrong idea? What do you mean?"

"We are arriving together for a formal event. It'll make people talk, y'know? Should we walk in one at a time? I've never been to this be of these events before and I don't-"

That's when Keigo's gut twisted.

"Don't be stupid, Luna. I'm not ashamed to walk in with you nor should you." he glared up at her.

Luna's eyes glared back at him. "I...I never said that!"

"If reporters question our relationship just be forward and tell them you are my sidekick." he groaned before getting up from his desk. "Because that's what you are! My sidekick."

Luna froze as she looked at him. "Will do, sir."

That made Keigo snap.

"Stop calling me that! I told you to call me Hawks." he growled underneath his breath. "I never liked formal talk. Please knock it off."

Stop making it feel like I'm losing you.

Luna stepped back from him. "Don't raise your voice at me."

Come back to me.

Keigo looked away to take a deep breath and tried to relax his puffed up wings. Luna stayed quiet in front of him and her eyes looked away.

"I'm sorry. I will pick you up later tonight." Keigo said softly.

Luna only nodded her head before she turned on her heel to walk out of the door.

"Wait!"

Keigo quickly grabbed onto her wrist without thinking and slipped the rock into her hand. It was a quick movement and Keigo almost felt like he was on autopilot. She turned her head to look back at him confused. His cheeks felt hot in embarrassment as he mustered up the courage to speak. Her wings puffed up in defense as they locked eyes.

Shit. I moved my hand without thinking.

"I found this and I thought you might like it." he said quietly as he let go of her and she opened her hand to look at the rock.

"A rock?" she whispered and held it up.

Keigo's face grew hot with embarrassment. "I...I know it's stupid. I just thought it was interesting because of its shape."

"No, I don't think it's stupid at all. Thank you." she smiled as she looked at it, her wings relaxing as she smiled.

"Really? Do you like it?" He felt his wings flap a bit and puff up.

She nodded her head. "Yes, thank you."

"I'll see you later, yeah?"

Luna nodded her head again and walked out of the office, leaving him with a glimmer of hope. He stood in his office for a bit, little happy chirps slipped through his quickly cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment.

Why do I keep doing that?

The day was quiet with not a lot going on and he finished without any incident. Keigo was stopped by fans as usual and dealt with minor incidents. Nothing that could impact tonight's event but it still needed paperwork to be done. After Keigo filled a few paperwork in his office, he was out the door at a quick pace. Keigo quickly flew back to his penthouse and threw off his visor along with his headset as soon as he walked through the balcony doors. His feathers slowly started to detach from the base as he slipped off his clothing and came back to his body once he was completely naked. He turned on the shower water and watched for it to get hot before stepping inside. His feathers started to puff up against the water as he washed off his body. He moved his attention towards his feathers afterwards to preen them to his best ability. After a quick flap of his wing he started on the other one.

He wanted to look nice.

Keigo paused for a moment and his wings dropped as he let out a sigh.

In reality, he didn't know how the night was going to pan out with what's going on. Maybe tonight he can have an actual conversation with her because he gave her that small gift. It was an icebreaker he needed. There was no way she could give him the cold shoulder all night and at a formal event with the press around.

Once he was finished with his shower he shook off his feathers before stepping out of the bathroom with a towel around his waist. His gala outfit was hanging up in his closet so he used a few of his feathers to go retrieve it. He unzipped the proactive cover over his suit and took it off the hanger one by one. A pair of dress pants, a black dress shirt and a vest. All tailored for his body and to accommodate his wings. He frowned to himself as he slipped his back dress shirt over his body. His feathers floated around the room as he adjusted himself in the shirt and slipped the vest on.

Before he fixed his vest, he looked over at the box on his dresser and grabbed it. He pulled out the tie that Luna had made for him and with a sigh. His thumb gently ran across the crystals on it. He still remembers how nervous Luna was to give this to him and he smiled to himself while placing it around his neck. His fingers moved quickly to tie it and tucked the end underneath the vest.

I can't forget this.

Not when she made it for me.

He grabbed his headphones and visor off the table before making his way towards the balcony. He put them on before jumping over the ledge and flapping his wings in a large spread. His jaw was clenched so hard he felt the tension in his teeth. This isn't how he wanted this night to go. He let out a frustrated groan before shaking his head. His wings flapped harder so he could gain more speed. The night wasn't going to end like this and he was going to make damn sure of that.

I'm going to fix this somehow.

Once he neared her apartment building he landed on Luna's balcony. He looked through the glass to see Luna's living room empty. With a deep shaky breath, he gently knocked his knuckles on the glass of the sliding door. He shoved his hands in his pockets as he waited, muttering to himself. That's when he saw movement and his head shot up. Luna walked across the room in that beautiful dress he had bought her. The fabric hugged her thick curves with ease and her hair was up in a bun with her bangs framing her face. She was messing with a pair of jeweled earrings as she approached the sliding door.

Wow, she's beautiful.

"I just need to grab my purse and then I'm ready to go." she said as she opened the sliding door, avoiding eye contact.

He breathed, "Luna, you look incredible."

Luna stopped to turn to him as her cheeks grew red. "Thank you. You look very dashing."

Her makeup was more dramatic than usual but it wasn't bad. She looked beautiful with that pink lipstick as she smiled at him. He sensed her coy behavior but she still remained distant toward him. Keigo walked over to the bedroom door and crossed his arms. She was looking around until she found a small black clutch purse. She set it down on the dresser before opening it up and shoved a few things inside. It was her phone, lipstick, a small powder compact with lipstick and something else but he couldn't see.

His eyes moved away from what she was doing to look at her room. It was decorated like a girl would. There were a lot of pastels and pinks around the room, fairy lights along the back of her bed and her bed had a lot of pillows. There was the painting she was talking about on her wall and he smiled to himself as he remembered how happy she was. Her room was actually what he pictured it would be. His eyes went back to Luna as she stood in front of her vanity mirror, smoothing out the front of her dress and her hands were trembling slightly.

"Having the jitters?" Keigo raised an eyebrow with a smirk.

"You can say that." she smiled a little to herself as looked at the mirror. "I'm scared these stupid nails and talons will rip the dress."

"Nonsense, you will be fine." he scoffed with a chuckle.

She opened up a box that had a big jeweled choker necklace. It looked like something a sugar baby would wear. She held it up in the box and he stood there memorized, he liked the way the light reflected off of it.

"Wow, where did you get that?" he whispered.

"I saved up to buy it. It would have looked tacky if I showed up with costume jewelry to a formal event." she frowned a bit.

"If you wanted a necklace you could have told me. I would have gotten you one, Luna." he shook his head with a frown.

"You already paid for the dress and my ankle bracelet. I didn't want to bother you after.." she fidgeted with the box with her nails. "Touya offered to buy it for me too but I also told him no."

Of course he did.

He walked over to Luna and stood behind her. "Let me help you with that. It'll be hard to put it on with your nails."

"Thank you."

Luna lifted the choker out of the box and moved it toward her neck, Keigo gently took the ends in his fingers. He quickly latched the back of it together, adjusting it so it fit flush against her skin. Her eyes watched him in the mirror's reflection, slowly her pupils doubled as they covered her sclera. Keigo looked over his shoulder and watched Luna squirm a bit. She frowned at him before pushing past him.

"Let's go. We'll be late."

{ * * * }

The Gala was loud and crowded as Keigo landed with Luna. He looked around at the heroes talking to reporters on the side of the red carpet. He felt Luna's arm wrap around his as they walked ahead. His heart pounded against his chest like a drum, it had been so long since she touched him. He could feel his feathers ruffle as he got excited from her touch alone. Keigo cleared his throat and tried to relax his feathers as they got closer toward the red carpet. A couple of interviewers and reporters caught his attention. Luna pulled away from his arm so he could move freely to talk to them. Every now and then he glances over at Luna. She was standing way behind him with a forced smile on her face, she was uncomfortable. He stepped aside but out of the corner of this eye he saw Touya walking toward her in a nice white tux.

His jaw clenched in annoyance.

Touya placed his hand on Luna's shoulder as they talked to each other. Luna would smile at him but it wasn't forced. That made Keigo feel even more jealous as he watched them. All he wanted was Luna to look at him like that again. If only he didn't fuck up that night and choke on his words. He tried to finish the interviews as fast and respectfully as he could before Touya did anything else. Keigo quickly walked over to Luna, wrapping his arm in hers and gave Touya a quick glare.

"If you don't mind, we need to head inside now." Keigo smirked at him.

Touya smirked back. "Don't let me stop you from having fun."

"See you later, Touya." Luna smiled at him before Keigo walked away with her.

Fuck, don't say is first name so causally.

Hawks pushed past all the other interviews and reporters as he held onto Luna's arm. He was losing patience with people trying to get his attention. This night was going to be different and he wanted to find a place to talk to her in private. He bit his bottom lip and then he felt a tug on his arm. Keigo looked over to Luna, she was giving him a look and pointed behind them. His brow creased before he turned to see Enji Todoroki Walking towards them.

"Enji has been calling out for you." she whispered. "Just say you didn't hear him do you seem less rude."

"Right." Keigo frowned at her.

"Luna! I didn't know you'd be here tonight." Mirio smiled brightly at her.

She removed her arm from Keigo's and walked over to Mirio to give him a hug. Keigo felt something in his gut and it was rising, he felt hot. Mirio stepped back from their hug and spun Luna.

"You look absolutely gorgeous." Mirio gasped and Luna flustered. "Where did you get that dress? It's beautiful."

"Oh, thank you. Hawks actually got it for me." she giggled softly.

"Well, he has incredible taste."

He didn't like how this night was going at all. Every time he wanted to have Luna to himself someone else would interrupt them. Keigo moved forward with his puffed up wings and went to reach for Luna.

"Hawks!" Enji's voice boomed from behind him.

Oh fuck.

Keigo dropped his arm with a sigh.

Not right now man.

"Heyo! Looking good. Do you need me for something?" Keigo spun on the heel of his foot and waved his hand at Enji.

"Do you have a minute?" Enji asked Hawks as he stood in front of him.

"Hawks." Luna said softly behind him. "You can go talk to him if you want. I'll be with Mirio until you are done."

I don't want that.

"I'll take real good care of her, sir." Mirio nodded and smiled brightly.

Don't fucking call me that.

Hawks tried to not frown when Luna turned away from him.

So far this night is crashing and burning.

Enji took Keigo aside to talk about work stuff and missions that will be briefed next week. Keigo kept up a usual smile as Enji talked but deep down he was pissed off because work talk could have waited. He would nod every so often, listening to Enji in and out but his eyes scanned the room for Luna's wings. He could see a glimpse of her in the crowd with Mirio. She was laughing and smiling along with him. Why did it make his heart ache? Keigo bit his lip in annoyance as watched Luna push through crowds of people.

Where were they going?

His hands shoved into the pockets of his dress pants, where did she run off to?

Maybe they left for a bit to get some fresh air?

The more Keigo sat there the more he got a bad feeling. He politely excused himself from Enji and moved his way through the crowd of people. Keigo made his way to the door and down to the staircase. There were people talking in the stairway and he peeked his head over the railing. His heart fluttered as he could see Luna standing beside Mirio. Keigo bit his lip as he stared at Luna from up high. However, something felt off about her. Luna's body language was uncomfortable but she continued to smile back at Mirio.

"You look like you need a breather." Mirio chuckled as he rubbed the nape of his neck.

"You could say that." she rubbed her arm.

"Penny for your thoughts?" he hummed.

"I'm sorry if I'm not my usual self. My mind has been elsewhere for the last few days and my sleeping schedule has been terrible."

"Do you want to talk about it?" Mirio asked.

Luna shook her head, "I just..."

"Someone not treating you right?" he gently touched her shoulder as he asked.

"Oh no, it's nothing like that at all. I'm the one that acted stupid. It's my own fault." she let out a soft sigh.

Keigo frowned as he listened to them.

"I'm sorry for bringing the mood down. What did you need to talk about?" she asked as she looked back at Mirio.

"I'm sorry for bringing this up so abruptly." he apologized. "I just needed to talk to you about something important."

"Really? Is everything okay?" she placed a hand over his forehead. "You look a little feverish."

Wait.

Mirio's face continued to fluster. "I am okay. Just a bit nervous."

"Nervous? Why is that?"

Keigo's feathers twitched up in defense as it started to click.

He's not going to...

"We've known each other since we were kids, right? I know we haven't been able to see one another since you graduated a few years ago. When you got accepted into the sidekick role I was super happy for you." he fidgeted with the watch on his hand with a nervous smile.

"I know. You were the first to call me and congratulate me when I found out the news. I was very happy that you did that." Luna's wings relaxed from what Keigo could see.

No...

A slow pit of jealousy rose into his gut as Mirio took her hands in his. Mirio gave her a big smile before leaning in to kiss her. Keigo's entire body started to boil and his wings shot up. Everything seemed like it was moving in slow motion and he was getting more angry as he watched. Luna gently moved her head to the side. Mirio's kiss landed on her cheek and he looked flustered.

SHE'S.

"I'm sorry for being so forward. I just wanted to confess my feelings toward you. I've..." Mirio took a deep shaky breath before looking back to Luna. "I've been in love with you ever since I was 16 years old. Now that I'm 18 I told myself I would tell you."

MY.

Keigo's heart dropped and he snarled underneath his breath.

"Mirio..." she flustered. "I don't know what to say. This is so sudden."

FUCKING.

"I just wanted to confess my feelings. I'm putting myself out there but I can understand if I'm too forward." He chuckled softly. "I was nervous to see you last time and I was going to tell you. But I didn't want it to be at random in front of others."

MATE.
