Bamboozled in the best ways

Oikawa Pov

'So uhh, bamboozled huh?' I said awkwardly to the woman in my arms, 'What does that mean?'

The bewilderment on her face made way for irritation, 'I knew I shouldn't have trusted those two to actually do what I wanted.' She grumbled.

'That explanation is not very helpful.' I replied drily, 'Actually, what do you mean exactly with the words 'what you wanted'? Was this your idea?'

'No.' The blonde said sulkily, 'I had a great plan, fantastic even. Things didn't go as planned and when I wanted to give up on it, those blasted boyfriends offered their help.'

All this time we were still just casually embracing, which I needed to change. I didn't trust myself to not do anything stupid in such an intimate pose. Like kissing her. Again. Yeah… definitely don't want to do that again… Even my brain didn't believe me and my eyes zeroed in on those plump lips. This was a problem. Why? Because I was supposed to be mad at her. I couldn't do that when the only thing my mind could come up with right now was bad excuses on why I should snog her senseless like, right now. I cleared my throat and looked away.

'That's a story I'd like to hear.' I said, 'How about we make ourselves comfortable so you can tell me all about it.' I gently pushed her backwards and she finally seemed to realize the position we were in. The ridiculously cute blush creeped up her cheeks and she scooted backwards.

'I'm sorry.' She mumbled.

I smiled ever so slightly, unable to actually be mad at her, which was the next big problem I needed to deal with. It's not like I didn't want our friendship back, but I at least wanted to make her grovel a little bit, 'It's okay.'

We shuffled the contents of the storage room around for a while until we were able to sit across from each other. We each had a volleyball cart to lean back against, with a thin matt used for gymnastics on the ground for the both of us to sit on. Even with the rearranging, it was a bit of a tight fit.

Suzumi had taken one of the volleyballs out of her cart and placed it in her lap, using her hands to smooth out nonexistent wrinkles.

'So, the story?' I inquired.

She sighed, 'Right. So I mentioned had plans right?'

I nodded, urging her to continue.

She bit her lip, 'I made plans to-,' She looked up at me, 'to make up with you.'

That surprised me a little. I don't know what I was expecting, but this wasn't really on the list of possibilities in my head. She'd been so done with me not even a week ago.

'Make up with me.' I repeated.

'Yes.' She said, 'I just- I realized how boring weekends are without you. I miss having you around me.'

My heart soared at her words. I knew this wasn't a confession, but at least I now knew she was lonely without me.

'Look, I know I was a total jerk to you. What I said was uncalled for and I'm really sorry for that. You caught me by surprise with that kiss.' Her cheeks reddened a little at the mention of the kiss. That fact alone made me unbearably happy. That wasn't the reaction of someone who was disgusted. That means she liked my kiss at least a little bit.

'I had planned,' She continued, 'to make it up to you with a grand gesture. I know how much you love volleyball. Mondays are days off for the volleyball team, so I had wanted to do something nice in the gym. Like, maybe we could just pass the ball between the two of us, I've gotten a little decent at receiving. Or maybe you would still be really mad at me, so you could serve the ball and I could try, and fail, to receive the ball, to get rid of some of your frustration. I don't really know how to set up the net though, so I asked Chi-chan to do it for me. Unfortunately, she suddenly disappeared. She didn't reply to my texts, I couldn't find her anywhere. And well, then Matsukawa-san and Hanamaki-san showed up… You know how that ended…'

Her story left me speechless. She really put so much thought into simply apologizing. She was willing to receive my serves just to make it up to me for heavens sake. It was such a stupid idea, she must know that, she has seen me serve. It warmed my heart that she was willing to go the whole nine yards… just for me. For something stupid that was entirely my fault. It made me feel stupidly guilty, but ecstatic at the same time.

'I, uh-' I stuttered, 'That's so sweet, thank you.'

This personally crafted apology plan was more than enough to make my heart flutter. The beaming smile that I got in reply to my thanks practically turned my insides to mush. I was putty in her hands, completely and utterly whipped and I could honestly say that I didn't care at that moment. I felt my anger melt away and fly out the same nonexistent window my resolve not to love her had done a little while ago.

I composed myself and looked the radiantly smiling girl in the eye, 'While we're on the topic of apologizing, I also want to say that I'm really, really sorry for what I did and said. I also missed having you in my life. I was being petty by not apologizing or coming to you first.'

Silence fell between us, but it was a good kind of silence filled with shy smiles and warm eyes.

'So uhm, I know I was the one who ended it but… will you be my friend again?' She asked bashfully, her hand outstretched.

As much as I wanted to be way more than friends, this would do for now. I grasped her hand, gently but firmly, 'Absolutely.'

'You don't want an explanation?' I asked carefully, not wanting to set our friendship off on the wrong foot.

'I still do. But can't really get one if I never get see you. I've read enough mystery novels to get an investigation going. I'll get my answer eventually, don't you even worry about it.' She said.

'That confidence is something that worries me in and of itself. But thanks for not pressuring me, I guess.'

'You're very welcome.' She replied with a cheeky grin.

I smiled back at her when suddenly, a more pressing matter occurred to me.

'I suppose you have no idea when our idiot duo is going to let us out of this shed, do you.'

Her grin dimmed and she shook her head.

'Do you have a phone?' I asked.

She shook her head once more, 'They took my bag from me the second they had the chance.'

'Yeah, same.'

I glanced at the door, wondering if we could break out somehow, when I noticed an envelope that seemed to be slid underneath the door. I scooted over to the door and picked it up. On the back of it was written 'To Oikawa' in swirly, neat letters. Suzumi reached over and gracefully plucked it from my grasp. She made a soft exclamation of victory, 'Yes!'

'What's that?' I said.

'This,' She said excitedly, 'is the other apology gift I made.'

The blonde quickly opened it to see if the contents were still to her liking before folding it closed again and handing it to me.

I opened the envelope once again and pulled out a sheet of paper. The paper, of cover, sported the design we came up with for the book cover of our navy notebook. The cover was crazy, now that I looked at it in its final form, with two detectives spying on two 'lovebirds', as was indicated by the heart floating above the two sparrows. Inside jokes and references were placed at every opportunity. The title 'Partners in crime' was made out of a wavy WordArt font. It was chaotic. I loved it.

'It's positively breathtaking.' I said between chuckles.

Suzumi broke into a fit of giggles, 'Isn't it? Totally inconspicuous.'

I couldn't help but look at her. Her eyes were scrunched up, her mouth stretched into a big grin. To me, she was perfect. I wanted her to be mine and I resolved right here, locked into this dusty storage shed, that I was going to make it happen.

I hadn't tried to chase her because I was afraid of it ending our friendship. It had temporarily ended nonetheless. She had come back to me, wanted me back in her life. Apparently I was important to her. I felt like I had a chance. She wanted the reason as to why I kissed her and she would find out soon enough. I would take it slow and build up our friendship first. Being alone with her might be a bit of a challenge, cue vivid memory of our kiss. I'd find a way to make it work. Then I would try to make a move. I knew how to flirt, she'd fall for me before she could say 'volleyball'.

I felt myself grow more confident by the second. I could do this!
