A blatant flaw

Suzumi Pov

To say that I was ecstatic, would be an understatement. I had failed my task successfully. Technically nothing had gone the way I planned, yet the outcome was everything I wanted and more. We had changed our positions a little, with Oikawa sitting beside me so he could stretch his legs properly. I wondered how long we had been in de musky, glorified shed the school called a storage room. Given that neither of us had entered the room with a phone, there really was no way for us to tell the time. We were basically at Matsukawa-san and Hanamaki-san's mercy. I didn't really like that idea.

I glanced to the side, where Oikawa sat with a bit of a dreamy smile. He had a gleam in his eye, the one he has when he's up to something.

'Whatcha thinking?' I asked.

He whipped his head in my direction, as if startled, 'Hm?' He hummed.

'I asked what you're thinking of. I know that look, you're up to no good when you look like that.'

'My Suzumi,' He said with a grin, 'never knew you paid that much attention to me. Understandable though, I'd look at me too if I were you.'

'I love the confidence but seriously, what's with the scheming look? Do you have an idea on how to get out of here?'

'Well… not really. I was just thinking about some stuff.' He glanced at the book cover, which was lying in my lap. 'Now that I think about it, didn't we have a similar idea? You know, locking Iwa-chan and Chi-chan in a room so they could grow closer and stuff like that?'

'Now that you mention it, you're right.' I said thoughtfully, 'I don't like the fact that our mind went in the same direction as those two idiots. Then again, at least we had planned to hide the key in the room so they could escape if they really wanted to.'

'That's true, I've noticed a distinct lack of keys to open the door.'

'So we're basically at their mercy to get out.'

'Pretty much.'

We lapsed into silence, each lost in our own little world. It was unclear to me how much time had passed, but when I looked at the door for the umpteenth time, I noticed something new. The hinges of the door were on our side of the shed. I've watched enough action movies to know that, with a little bit of luck, we could mission impossible our way outside.

'Okay, I've got an idea.' I said. Oikawa shook himself out of his thoughts and gestured for me to continue, 'It's a bit of a stretch, but bear with me.'

'Yeah? What is it?'

'So you see how the hinges of the door are on our side?' He nodded, 'And you know I like action movies right?' The brunet nodded again, 'Well in the movies they can usually unscrew the hinges, lift the door out the hinges and walk away unscathed!'

He looked at me as if I were crazy, 'You know Suzumi,' He said patiently, as if talking to a child, 'I think it's time I tell you that not everything you see in the movies works the same in real life.'

'Yeah no shit Einstein.' I replied drily and stood up, 'You just wait and see, I'll get us out of here in no time.'

I took the two steps necessary to get to the door and inspected the screws that the door was installed with. Lady luck was smiling down on me and I saw that the screws had 'slotted' screwheads. They're the ones with just a horizontal line, instead of a plus sign or another complicated shape. All I'd need was a sturdy, flat object to unscrew them with.

I heard rustling behind me and when I glanced over my shoulder, I saw Oikawa come up behind me. Guess he was curious in my genius idea after all and I suppressed a triumphant grin.

I must not have been doing a good job hiding it, because he grumbled, 'Don't look too pleased with yourself.'

He came even closer until our bodies were almost touching and asked, 'So what's the deal? Is this plan of yours going to work?'

'Yes, it will!' I said, not trying to hide the fact that I was pretty proud of myself, since he'd already noticed. 'We'll need a straight object that won't bend easily so we can take out these screws.'

He nodded and stepped back. I briefly missed the warmth but pushed that stupid thought away. Then we started the search for a way out.

It was fun, we just chatted away as we searched the shed for options. We tried some stuff, we folded the envelope the book cover came in multiple times, but when we did, it was too thick to use and when we folded it less, it wasn't sturdy enough. We used one of my hairpins, but it bend straight away. We didn't give op though, and kept on looking. I the back of my mind, I felt like I was forgetting something.

After trying and retrying our options, we started to lose hope. There were only so many places we could search for items. That was, until Oikawa looked underneath one of the volleyball carts that we had not moved. Triumphantly, he held up a student ID card. It was a plastic card the size and thickness of a credit card. It was a mandatory to have one of those things. It had your name, school, class, student number and photo on it. You had to show it to the teachers before taking a test. I didn't really like them, it was just another step I had to think about during a stressful time, exams. Besides, I don't know how I do it, call it a talent of sorts, but I always seem to somehow look like a drug dealer on the passport photos they use. But right now, it just might be our way out.

I let Oikawa do the honors of trying it. It took some 'gentle persuasion' before the screws started moving, but once it got going, it worked like a charm!

'You know, the escape scenes are usually much more suspenseful in the movies.'

He chuckled, 'This might be the most casual escape in history. You're free to make it more dramatic though.'

'How? Start humming a bad impression of the mission impossible theme?'

'I'd actually love to hear that.'

'Call me crazy,' I said, 'but I really feel like we're forgetting something super important.'

'You're crazy.' He replied.

'Think we'll get in trouble for doing this?' The pretty setter asked after a pause as he worked away at the last screw.

'Only if the teachers find out I suppose.' I said, pushing the uneasy feeling to the back of my mind.

The brunet grinned, 'Better keep this a secret then.'

I matched his grin with my own, 'Sounds good to me.' I said as the last screw fell to the floor.

When we started discussing how we would lift the door out of its hinges, it occurred to me, the thing I overlooked!

'Wait! Gosh we're so stupid!' I exclaimed.

'What is it? We're basically outside already.'

'The door is locked remember? That's why we needed a different way out in the first place. How are we going to remove the door if its locked in place?'

Realization dawned on the both of us and we groaned. We just wasted so much time on something that wasn't going to work!

'How about I just break it down?' Oikawa mumbled.

'No, no, how about I try to break down the door?' I countered, 'You need those shoulders and arms for volleyball.'

We were both over it, I could see it. We both just wanted to get out of this tiny shed and breathe in some fresh air, instead of this musty smell.

'Step back.' I said, but before I could do anything, the door swung open.

'Alright, let me stop you right there.' Matsukawa-san said.

Oikawa and I just stood there, dumbfounded, staring at the two people that got us in this situation. I could see Hanamaki-san standing behind his boyfriend trying, and failing, not to burst out laughing.

'Hold on,' Oikawa said, 'the door was unlocked the whole time?'

Matsukawa-san shook his head, 'We got here like twenty minutes ago. You guys were rummaging around so we quietly unlocked the door and waited for the two of you to notice. Turns out you didn't notice at all.'

At this point, the pink haired male lost it, 'So instead of just… trying to see if the door was unlocked,' He said between fits of laughter, 'you psychos wanted to take an entire door out of its hinges. You didn't even attempt to open the door.'

'You guys accuse us of being stupid all the time.' Matsukawa-san said, 'But this is a low not even we dared to go.'

We stepped out of the shed and I took in a deep breath of fresh air. I hoped the embarrassment didn't show too much on my face, but I already knew I was hoping in vain. I don't think I've ever felt this stupid. I'd wanted to be outside, but right now, I just wanted to step back into that shed, close the door and never open it again. When I saw Oikawa's face, I knew he was thinking the same thing.

'They're never going to let this go, are they?' I asked my handsome friend in a hushed tone.

He looked at me with dread, 'Never.'

That's all for today! How many of you were basically facepalming throughout most of this chapter? I know I was. But then again, there have been many times where I've been so caught up in something, I fail to notice that one blatant flaw in my plan. I once really wanted to make pancakes. I was so sure I had everything to make them, but once I'd mixed everything together, except the eggs, I noticed that we had no eggs. Stupid, I know. I spent like twenty minutes looking up alternatives for eggs in pancakes because I refused to give up on my dream to eat pancakes.

Also, yes, I googled the names of different types of screwheads. My search history is a mess every Sunday lol.

See you again next week!
