Did I hear that right?

Oikawa Pov

I pride myself in my excellent sense of self-preservation. I'd say it has developed wonderfully after years of pissing off my best friend. I knew what to do to keep myself out of trouble. Well, I mean, if we could just ignore the fact that I spread false rumors about Suzumi, which led to me kissing her, which led to said girl being very angry with me.

So yeah, self-preservation. Makki and Suzumi had none of it. Our study session had started well enough, everyone doing their own thing with the occasional complaint and casual mentions of dropping out and marrying rich.

The wing spiker and blonde were sitting next to each other on the long side of Chi-chan's dining table. Matssun and I were sitting across from them, while Chi-chan and Iwa-chan occupied both ends of the table.

Breaking the couples apart was the petite manager's decision. No one really liked that idea. Even Iwa, who normally was Chi-chan's number one supporter, looked pretty heartbroken about this. One pointed stare from her was all it took though, and we all just quietly took our places at the table.

Right, Makki and Suzumi. The two of them had been quietly helping each other study. No one really thought anything of it, until the giggling started. Makki had been studying his kanji, trying his best to memorize the different characters. Suzumi had been doing her best to help by turning the kanji into drawings that represented the meaning of that particular kanji.

However, at some point down the line, the helpful drawings turned less helpful, until it ended up as a drawing competition between the two. They had tried to keep quiet, but failed miserably.

'Hanamaki-san, Hiyo-chan.'

The way they instantly stopped mid-giggle was hilarious.

'Y- yeah?' The blonde asked, turning towards her best friend.

'Follow me.'

The duo gulped and nodded, getting up and following the brunette into the hallway. Now, if I wanted to curry Suzumi's favor, I should get up, follow them and try to 'save' her. I'd be a hero, surely she'd fall for me. Boom, done deal.

My instinct for self-preservation did not agree. It was telling me to keep my booty firmly planted on this chair and act like this never happened. I glanced at Matssun and saw that he was also jotting down math equations like the world around him didn't exist.

I made the split second decision that being a hero wasn't worth it. Chi-chan might have been kidding about straight up hitting us, but this girl could give you a surprisingly painful forehead flick. Actually, someone got to know that fact and just yanked it out of proportions. Unbeknownst to her, there's a rumor about it, saying that she knocked one of the club's previous third years unconscious with one of those flicks. The idea of ever getting one nearly brought Kindaichi to tears. Even mad dog-chan, the scariest guy on the team, made sure to never break the rules. It was an excellent way to keep the younger guys in check, which is why we never bothered to correct the rumor. Besides the fact that it was just funny seeing the first and second years freak out about it.

So all in all, it just wasn't a good time. You know what was scarier, though? The scolding she usually gave you after the flick. She didn't do that every time, but when she did, it was terrifying. I didn't want to be caught in that and risk getting scolded myself. Matssun had apparently also decided that it wasn't worth it.

One time, I had been trying to get over a break-up. Matssun, Makki and Iwa-chan had been with me and gave me food to console me. We ended up eating way too much, were late to practice because of it and played like garbage due to cramps.

Boy, the scolding we got after that was enough to traumatize us for the rest of our lives. Well, all of us except for Makki apparently.

I heard the soft sound of footsteps coming in our direction and quickly focused on my history notes again. When I heard them enter the room, I dared glancing over my shoulder and saw the two chatterboxes walking to their seats with matching red patches on their foreheads. They looked unscarred enough, meaning that they dodged the scolding. The pair took their seats and started scribbling away.

The rest of the afternoon passed fairly quickly and uneventfully after that.

Actually, there was one thing I noticed. Sometime during our study session, Matssun, who was sitting closest to Chi-chan, passed her a note. The girl just read it and gave him a thumbs up. I wondered what that was about.

I was shook out of my thoughts when the brunette in question stretched her arms with a deep sigh. She glanced at the clock, hummed, then nodded.

'Well, I think it's time to wrap things up.'

Matssun instantly closed his book, as if he had been waiting for her to say that.

The brunette rolled her eyes, but then smiled.

'Let's clear the table, so we have a little more space for the food and drinks.'

We must have looked confused, because she laughed.

'What? You thought I only invited you over to study?'

'But- but you were so mean and serious!' Suzumi said.

'I was, because I know you guys well enough to know you're all going to procrastinate until the last minute.' She looked at us sternly. I mean, she wasn't wrong. I had better things to do, like seducing the girl I liked. No one else was objecting either, so I guess she was spot on in her assumptions. 'Well, all of you, except for Iwaizumi-san of course.' She said with a blush.

'If you knew I would study anyway, why couldn't I sit next to you.' The ace, dare I say, whined.

'Come on Iwaizumi, being outside a one meter radius of your girlfriend for a few hours won't kill you.'

'Don't even start Matsukawa,' Iwa-chan retorted, 'you and Hanamaki weren't all that sneaky with your foot-touching-moment under the table.'

'I think you should all learn from the real model student,' I said and pointed to myself, 'me.'

'Yeah? Were the doodles also part of that?'

'Support me this once Makki.'

'How about we just go get the drinks and stuff?' Chi-chan murmured.

We were standing next to each other as we watched the guys bicker. I thought back to fifteen minutes ago, when the room had been dead silent except for the sound of pens and pencils scratching on paper. I must say that I much prefer the noisy environment.

'Yeah sure.' I replied with a smile.

Before I could fully turn around, I saw Chi-chan give Matsukawa-san a strange look, which he returned. Then she marched out the door with me following behind.

Now, I'm pretty sure I wasn't supposed to hear this. It was their fault really, for not making sure I was out of earshot.

'So,' Matsukawa-san said, his voice low, like he didn't want to be overheard. 'what are you planning? You know, with Suzu-chan.'

Yup, definitely not supposed to have heard that.

All done! I know this is a lot of just Oikawa's thoughts, but I hope you liked it. The next chapter will have more actual dialogue. I've already got a few ideas for it. Mainly about Suzumi trying to figure out what that 'plan' means. This story is completely based on miscommunication and honestly, I love that.

Also, a massive thank you to the person that took the time to write a lovely review on the last chapter! It literally makes my day~ You might think I'm kidding, but it makes me smile so much!

See you again next Sunday~ I hope you have an amazing week!
