Hey, guys! Here's the next chapter of the story. I don't own BNHA, only my OC's.
Everyone speaking in unison
Inner thoughts
Now let's get started!
Amaterasu POV
She has to be joking, right? I thought to myself as the vice class rep continues to hold out a cheerleader's uniform with the U.A. insignia. This can't be happening to me!
"Um, Yaoyorozu-san, you don't really expect me to wear that… Do you?"
"Of course I do! You're a part of class 1-A."
"Right, but we're in the games to compete."
"Exactly!"
"Right, so now that we're on the same page-"
"You can put the uniform on!" Yaoyorozu smiles sweetly as she attempts to finish my sentence for me. "Please hurry! We don't have much time left."
"Wait! Yaoyorozu-san!" I call out, but the girl runs out of the room before I can stop her. I fall to my knees as a wave of anxiety hits me. "I don't understand what's going on."
"Homura-chan? Aren't you going to put the uniform on?"
Looking up to my right, I notice Ashido, who is already in uniform, approaching me with a curious face. Realizing this may be the only opportunity I have to learn the truth, I quickly stand on my feet and close the distance between us. "Ashido-san, why in the world are we wearing cheer costumes?"
"Huh? Oh, you must be late to the news too! Apparently, we're going to have a cheer-off before the next round of the competition. So all of the girls need to get ready."
"What?! Since when has this been a thing?"
"I don't know?" the pink girl shrugged. "In any case, we have five minutes before we need to enter the stadium, so you might want to hurry up!"
Having no other choice, I put the horrible uniform on. I've never liked cheerleaders, and now I'm being forced to compete in a cheer contest. I guess I do have a leg up on the competition with the number of gymnastic classes I took throughout my childhood. My parents hoped it would get my mind off of Hero training, but it had the opposite effect. I guess when this is over, I can thank them for the past lessons.
Meeting with the girls once I finished getting dressed, the six of us went out into the stadium in our mini-skirts and crop tops. I just hope my grandma doesn't blow a fuse seeing me like this. However, I barely have any time to think about that while I gaze into the sea of students wearing the standard U.A. jumpsuit. None of the other girls are sporting cheer costumes except us and the American's. The six of us from class 1-A freeze in our place, not daring to call attention to ourselves.
"Momo, I thought you said there was a cheer competition!" Jirou harshly whispered from beside me. Before Yaoyorozu can reply, Present Mic begins to speak to the audience.
"Now that lunch is over, it's finally time to reveal the last game! Now before that, there's good news for all of you who didn't make it to the finals! This is a sports festival! So we've prepared recreational games that everyone can participate in, too! We've even brought real cheerleaders from America to liven things up!"
What the hell! I think to myself as the American girls begin to chant. Are we the only ones competing?! Please, Lord, have mercy on my soul! Don't let anyone notice us!
"Hmm?" Sensei mutters into the microphone as the entire audience switches their attention to us. "What are they doing?"
"What's the matter, Class A?" Present Mic inquires tauntingly. "What kind of fan service is that?"
In the distance, Kaminari and Mineta are praising one another. Before I can yell at them for making fun of us at our expense, Yaoyorozu yells at the duo. "Mineta! Kaminari! You tricked us, didn't you?! Why am I always caught up in Mineta's schemes? I even used Creation to make the uniforms..."
"The real question is, why do you keep listening to him?" I groan in annoyance as I drop the pom-poms to the ground. "Those stupid pervs!"
Following my lead, Jirou also throws away her pom-poms, "Those guys are so dumb!"
"And they're about to get dumber once I pound them to the ground!"
Not waiting for any words of approval, I rush at the grape pervert and kick him with all of my might. I also used a bit of my quirk to help me as I sent the fool flying. The females behind me cheer when Mineta hits the wall from the force of my kick. I turn to Kaminari and deck him in the face. He crumples to the ground holding his nose.
"Eraserhead, is that allowed?" Mic whispers into the microphone from where he and Eraserhead are sitting.
"...It is now..."
"All right, everyone! Let's have fun competing in the recreational games!" Present Mic screams in excitement changing subjects. "When that's over, the sixteen from the four teams that made it to the final round will duke it out tournament style, one-on-one! Now, everyone huddle near Midnight to find out who your opponent is!"
As we approach the stage, Shoto nudges my side as he smirks down at me, "Never took you for a cheerleader."
"Never thought you were a jerk," I mutter back at him as I walk away from him to stand beside Aoyama. I'm still a bit put off by the comment he made earlier. I understand he's stressed, but I don't deserve to be lashed out by him for something that isn't even my fault.
Midnight reveals a box to us labeled LOTS as she speaks, "Now, let's draw lots to determine the brackets. Once the bracket is determined, we'll have the recreational games and then start! The sixteen finalists can choose whether or not they want to participate in the recreation. I'm sure some of you want to rest or save your strength. Now for the first team-"
Suddenly, from the other side of Aoyama, our classmate Ojiro, speaks up. "Um...! Excuse me. I'm withdrawing."
All around us, our peers gasp in shock and amazement. Even Midnight looks surprised by what the boy said. Iida tries to reason with him, but Ojiro cuts over the class rep.
"I barely remember anything from the cavalry battle until almost the end. I think it has something to do with that guy's quirk," Ojiro complains as she stares at Shinso retreating back. "I know that this is a great chance and that it's foolish to waste it..."
After that, I tuned out the rest of his speech. If Ojiro wants to quit, then that's on him. I only refocus on what he's saying when he begins to piss me off. The moment he really ticks me off; isn't when he started speaking about his pride, which is dumb. Nor was it the fact that he brought up the cheerleader uniforms, which was embarrassing. What got to me is what he said next. "To have my own classmate stab me in the back... How could you, Homura-san?"
Everyone turned their attention to me, eyeing me like I was the true villain in the story. A backstabber. Pfft, what a joke.
"You've got to be kidding me... This is a competition. When we first started, it was stated we could use our quirks so long as we don't fatally hurt another student. Now you're upset? Because someone got the upper hand on you and used you? However, I'm sure if it was the other way around, you wouldn't be saying this. What worse, you actually thought I would care. Well, I don't. Without us, you would never have made it to this point. If you want to give up then, go ahead and let someone else take your place. Pfft, pride, that's all you boys care about, isn't it? It's what makes you weak!"
"Enough," Midnight says with a snap of her whip and a stern look on her face. "Youthful talk like that is something... I like! Ojiro! I accept your withdrawal!"
She decided based on her tastes...!
"In that case, we'll have to move up one person from the fifth place cavalry battle team..."
After a bit of talking from the fifth-place team's leader, it's decided her team would forfeit their chance and allow their companion to take their place. I don't recall his name, but I remember his quirk is similar to Kirishima's. With that said and done, we moved on to the pairings. Looking at the giant TV, each person got to see who they would be fighting. Lucky for me, I get to fight a dunce during the first round.
"Oh, this is going to be too easy," I laugh to myself. I leave Aoyama to head to a quieter area when I notice Shinso speaking to Midoriya. The green-haired boy was about to respond when Ojiro pops up out of nowhere to keep the boy silent.
"You're choosing favorites, aren't you, Ojiro-kun?" I purr at the boy as I wrap my arm around Shinso's neck. "If that's the case, I guess I'll pick Shinso-kun. I have to keep the match fair after all."
I leave my two classmates behind as I escort the purple-haired boy to his designated waiting room. Once inside, I motion to the boy to take a seat on the opposite side of the table. I quickly grab a spare uniform and find a locker to hide behind as I change. Once I'm done I plop down in front of Shinso. Without giving him a chance, I begin speaking, "Well, you're at a slight disadvantage. If only we had each other's opponent, perhaps you would have a better opportunity of passing to the next round. Not only that, but Ojiro will inform Midoriya about your quirk or at least what information he's gathered thus far."
"Umm... Homura-san, may I ask you something?"
"Technically, you already are Shinso-kun, but go ahead anyway."
"Why have you decided to help me?"
"Huh, I thought I explained myself during the cavalry round. Well, in short, I think you deserve a spot in our class."
"Why? Most people think I would be a good villain. Hell, most people are wary of speaking to me, so why are you trying to help me?"
"Why not?" I inquire with a straight face. "Technically, most quirks are deemed beneficial for villain activities. What matters most isn't the opinion of others. It's your own beliefs and morals that should matter the most, and clearly, you want to be a hero."
"Do you really believe it's possible," Shinso asked in a quiet voice as he looks down at his hands. I don't like how small he looks right now, and it isn't for the reason most people would believe it would be.
"Yes, and do you want to know why?" I reply to the boy as I brought his attention back to me. "Because you remind me of the greatest hero I know, Eraserhead."
"Really?"
"Yep, and if you're going to get any better, then I want you to meet him. Which is why I'm going to help you beat Midoriya-san."
"Even if he's your friend?"
"Eh, I wouldn't consider anyone but Shoto as a friend. Plus, as I said before, if he's going to receive help, then it's only fair that you do as well."
"Alright, so what can you tell me?"
"Midoriya is an odd individual; however, he will be a bit tricky..."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, his quirk is... okay, think of his quirk like a double-edged sword. His quirk is enhanced strength, and he can use it to force wind pressure in any direction he chooses. Kind of like All Might, but the only problem is he can't control it- like at all. The moment he does, it backfires, and he breaks his bones. Still, we can use this against him!"
"How?! With a quirk like that, I have no chance!"
"Have some confidence Shinso-kun! All you need to do is immobilize him. I doubt he'll use his quirk in any case. Throughout the competition, he hasn't used his quirk- I think..."
"You think?"
"Well, I couldn't get all of the info from the cavalry round, but what I do know from my time observing the boy is that he tries not to use it. Midoriya is aware that once he uses his quirk, he'll be out of the game due to his broken bones, so he'll try to use another tactic. He's clever like that. The good thing is that the playing field is clear, so the only thing you have to worry about is staying far from him. In a fight, a real battle, it's clear he'll beat you. So get him to speak."
"How do I do that? I don't know him or his weaknesses."
"Try not going after him," I said with a snap of my fingers. At first, Shinso looks confused, even annoyed. Then after a moment, he finally catches onto what I meant.
"Disrespect a classmate... the monkey-boy?"
"I don't think he's a monkey, but yeah! Midoriya seems like the type who would get offended by that," I mention as I rise from my seat. "In any case, that should help you. You have 20 minutes to prepare yourself, so I'll leave you now. If you do well, I'll see you when the competition is over, and we can work on your training regimen."
"My training regimen?"
"You want to become a hero, right?" I question him as I walk to the door. "You'll need to improve then. You already have a late start, so you'll need all the help you can get. I'll see you later."
With that being said and done, I leave the boy to his thoughts. Hopefully, when the time comes, Shinso will perform adequately. However, I can't think about that for too long when I spot another individual staring at me. I almost wish I could ignore him, but I know I can't. It's impossible to ignore the number two hero.
"Hello, Endeavor-san," I coolly greet the man as I approach him. "If you're looking for your son, then I have no idea where he is."
"I'm not looking for him at the moment," He mentions as he looks down at me. "I was looking for you."
Crap, I think to myself. This is not the place nor the time to be dealing with this man.
"Sorry, but I'm busy," I said, trying to push past him, but he stops me as he places a hand on my shoulder.
"Helping the enemy? You have more important things to contain your attention. Like my son."
"Ha, your son is perfectly fine without me," I mutter as I smack his hand off of me. "Plus, it's none of my business what happens to him during this competition."
"And the other boy-"
"Is a General Education student who deserves a chance at being a hero. With his quirk, Shinso can save millions without raising a fist. I would trade quirks with him if I could, but I can't!"
"Be grateful for the powerful quirk you possess, and focus on the task ahead!"
"The only task I'm focused on is getting away from y-"
The air from within my lungs rushes out when Endeavor slams me against the wall. He leans down until he's at eye level with me. It takes everything within me to look him in the eye instead of cowering away.
"Your attention should be on my son. You are his future wife; regardless of what your father says, it will happen. I don't have the time to waste here bickering with you," the flame hero snarls at me before releasing his hold on me. He turns to walk in the direction I just came from, "Don't embarrass us while you're out there."
Once I can no longer hear his footsteps, I allow myself to sink to the floor. True, Endeavor is intimidating, but the reason I'm shaking is for another reason altogether. The way he looked at me right now is the way Shoto looked at me earlier.
I know Shoto is a good person; he's my best friend after all, but what if he turns out like Endeavor. What if we get married and our marriage is the same as his parents?
No! It won't be like that! I can't handle any more pain from the people I care about!
"Homura-san?" a sheepish voice sounds through the quiet hall. From the end of the hall, around the corner, Midoriya is poking his head out to take a glimpse of me. "Hom-mura-san, are yyyou okay?"
Without hesitation, I grab the small boy and haul him to the nearest closet. Closing the door behind me, it becomes abundantly clear how close we are to one another. With only a tiny space in between us and the only light source in the supply closet being myself, the boy begins to blush. Still, none of that matters right now.
"How much did you hear?" I growled at the small green-haired boy. All thoughts of our earlier conversation leave me as I interrogate him. "Answer me!"
"...all of it..."
"Alright, well, you are going to pretend like you heard none of it! Got it! I don't need any stupid, useless rumors spreading around school. The last thing I need is more stress, so zip it."
"So, it's true then? You and Todoroki-kun."
"What? Of course not. Endeavor doesn't know when to take no for an answer, so he likes to think that Shoto and I are engaged."
"Why does he want that?"
"Ugh, you heard Shoto's story. He wants him to surpass All Might in every way possible, and having powerful grandkids fits in that plan. However, as I told you before all of this, my parents hate heroes. My old man thought he was ticking me off by refusing the proposal, but little does he know he's actually doing me a favor. I can't tell him-, but that's not the point! What I'm trying to say is you need to stay quiet! You didn't do anything to stop him, so stay out of my business!"
I step out of the closet without another word. I stomp my way down the hall until I hear Midoriya speaking up again, "I wanted to."
"What?" I questioned, whirling around to face him. "What did you say?"
"I wanted to stop him, but I didn't want to get in your way."
"I don't understand."
"It's just that... you and Todoroki are so strong, I never thought you would need help. I thought I would get in your way, but now I realize I should have said some-"
"No, you did the right thing. I don't want any help."
"Maybe not, but I think you need it."
"And what would you know?! I don't even know you! Just because we ate lunch together and I asked you a stupid question doesn't mean anything. You have no clue what I'm going through! If you want to help, then shut up and stay out of my way!"
I leave Midoriya standing in the middle of the hallway as I walk to the stands. Each class has its designated sitting area to watch the games. I sit at the very back corner, away from everyone. Aoyama waves to me, motioning to the open seat next to him. After some thought, I took up his offer. If I want to keep pretending that everything is okay, I can't have anyone suspecting something is wrong with me.
As the competition begins, I make small talk with Aoyama, and at some point, Yaoyoroza joins in with Mina and Koda. All of us converse with each other (Koda, for the most part, using sign language to speak with me) until the end of Shoto's match.
"I guess that means I should get going," I tell the group as I stand up. "Sho should have the ice gone in no time."
"Hey, Homura-san, wait up," Kaminari called to me before I could leave. "Let's walk there together."
"Why?"
"So we can talk. I mean, just because we're going against one another doesn't mean we can't communicate. Let's get to know each other, and hey, maybe when this is over, we can grab a bite to eat. You kind of owe for that punch-"
"You mean the punch you deserve for that cheap trick you and Mineta pulled? No. Plus, I have plans with my younger brother, who is a better conversationalist than you."
Kaminari begins to sputter at my jab while the rest of the class chuckles at my comment. As I turn to leave, he runs to stand in front of me. With a hand up, he halts me to speak. "How about a bet?"
"Huh?"
"If I win our match, you'll go on a date with me."
"Okay."
"SHE SAID YES?!"
"But if I win, you have to wear the cheer costume for the rest of the competition."
Immediately the class begins to laugh as Kaminari's face goes red. I even heard a few comments about taking pictures of the poor boy.
"Do we have a deal?" I purr at the boy with an outstretched hand. He firmly nods in agreement as he shakes my hand. "Good."
In the end, I didn't walk the rest of the way with Kaminari. I suppose he's too nervous now to stand beside me.
The closer I get to the field, the louder Present Mic's voice becomes, "Everybody, sorry for the wait! The stage that was frozen in the second match is finally dry, so on to the next match!" As I enter the stadium, Present Mic introduces me to the crowd, "Our next contestant, and my favorite to win the competition is from class A! Tieing in first place during the entrance exam, welcome our shining student from the hero course. The everlasting light herself, Homura Amaterasu~!"
Just as I walk up the steps to the platform, I meet Kaminari's gaze and match his grin with a smirk of my own.
"Versus, Sparking Killing Boy! Also, from the hero course, it's Kaminari Denki!"
The two of us reach our places as Mic continues his rant. I watch Kaminari's movements to calculate how he will open the battle. He doesn't seem like the type to hold back, so I could use that to my benefit. On the other hand, if he chooses to conserve his power, I'll have to knock him near the edge and shoot him with my beam to eliminate him.
As Present Mic nears the end of his introductions, I move into my stance. Out of the many fighting styles in the world, I favor the Muay Thai style the best. I hunch my back slightly as I raise my fist in front of my head. I bring my right leg back and settle my weight on it as I bring my left leg forward with it being on the ball of my foot.
"Let's get started!"
"Don't worry, Homura-san. I'll comfort you when this is over. 'Cause this match will probably be over in a second!" Kaminari boasts as he covers his entire body with electricity. "Indiscriminate Shock- 1.3 Million Volts!"
For a man who personifies lightning, he sure is slow. Maybe he's too concerned with going big that he doesn't realize it's a stupid plan which slows him down. In any case, I raise my left leg into the air, which in turn creates a platform of light for me to stand on for my other leg. Positioning my fist slightly inward, I produce a shield to protect myself. Once the electricity passes me, I drop back to my original stance, which reverses what my light just constructed.
"A second indeed," I mutter, watching the boy revert to dullard mode. He lets out a cry of... well, to be honest, I don't exactly know. "Did you think you were the only one training for the upcoming games?"
Quickly, I shift my stance to a punching motion. Out from my right fist, a beam of light shoots straight to Kaminari, knocking him to the wall behind him. The crowd around me erupts in cheers as Midnight officially announces Kaminari's loss.
"It was decided in an instant! I'll say it once more! An instant! Can Homura-chan be beaten?!"
I exit the arena as soon as I'm given the all-clear from Midnight. Instead of heading back to my classmates, I walk in the direction my family is within. Thanks to the reputation we hold in the hero world, my family has the opportunity to have front-row seats at the U.A. sports festival. Miko-nii was excited when he first found out, and I promised him I would sit with him at some point during the competition.
By the time I reached their section in the stadium, Iida and some pink-haired girl step onto the field. Iida starts spouting things about being a fair contestant or something like that, so of course, Midnight would allow the fight to happen with support gear. I'm not too sure since I'm only paying half of my attention to them as I search for my brother and Grandma.
"Onee-chan! Over here," I hear in the distance. Looking to my left, I see my brother waving at me to join them. "Hurry, it's about to start!"
Jogging the rest of the way, I pick my brother up and sit him on my lap. I sadly can't help but notice how big my brother is getting. Soon, I won't be able to do this. I'm startled out of my thoughts when I hear a young female voice sounding throughout the stadium.
"What's going on?" Miko-nii asked; however, none of us can answer the boys' questions. "Does that girl have a mic?"
"No, of course not... right, firefly?"
"Don't ask me," I replied to my grandmother. "I have no idea what's going on."
The longer the match went on, the clearer the situation became. This won't be a fight; it's an advertisement!
"PFFTTT!"
My brother and I begin to laugh at poor Iida's expense. My grandma slaps our arms to silence us until a snort escapes her. In the end, all of us laugh openly at the comical predicament Iida is in.
"Well, as amusing as this may be, what do you think about her, my firefly?"
"Hatsume? At least that's what I believe she said her name was. Hmmm, well, it's clear the only reason she wants to be here is to showcase her support items."
"Isn't that wrong, Onee-chan? Other students want to compete, and instead, she's here."
"Say's the rugrat who is still laughing..."
"HEY! It's funny!"
"Well, there's no denying that, but you have to remember the other students in U.A. also want a chance to showcase their talents. Plus, I believe Hatsume is making a perfect presentation of her creations right now. In all, I think it's pretty clever to use this competition to her benefit."
"What about her support items?" My grandma inquired as she shifted closer to us. "What do you think about those?"
"Well, they're pretty handy, but I'm not too sure how I feel about using her items."
"In any case, you should introduce yourself to her. It's always beneficial to have someone who creates support items as a friend."
"That's true."
"Hey, I think she's about done," Miko-nii points out to us until Hatsume proves him wrong by pulling something else out. "Or not..."
After 10 minutes of advertisements, Hatsume Mei finally finished. Although I did like a few of her inventions, I wouldn't have any use for them. Perhaps if I meet Hatsume and allow her some time to view my current uniform, she may invent something useful for me. I'll have to put a pin on it for the time being since the next fight is about to start.
I remain with my brother and grandma until the end of Kirishima's fight, which ends in a tie before leaving. Once I reach my class, my group from earlier calls out to me to join them. As I sit with the group, I take note of Kaminari's get-up.
"Nice skirt, Pikachu," I called out to the electric boy. The majority of the class begins to laugh at the boy's expense. "Don't forget to cheer for me during my match."
Suddenly, Present Mic's voice begins to call out the next match, and my class settles down to watch. I can hear some of my classmates complaining about the match-up, but I choose to ignore them. True, I believe Bakugo will beat Uraraka, but that doesn't mean you should knock her out of the competition yet. Now, do I think she's a great fighter? Absolutely not. I believe she's average when it comes to being a hero. Barely. Still, the whole point of this competition is to prove how far you're willing to go to become a hero. So, I'll withhold my opinions for the time being.
As the match begins, it becomes apparent the only thing Uraraka wants is to use her quirk against Bakugou by touching him. However, she isn't able to grab him no matter the number of tactics she uses.
This is useless, I think to myself. Uraraka is getting desperate. If she's going to do this, she might as well give up. The smokescreen isn't working. Plus, the way she's running towards him is making it worse. Bakugou keeps throwing Uraraka into the air with his quirk every time he swings at her. So why doesn't she change tactics?
It was at that moment that I changed my outlook on the match. Eraserhead always told me if something doesn't make sense when you first look at it, then it's time to clear your mind. Look at the picture as a whole. By doing that, I finally noticed the trap Uraraka was setting up for the pomeranian. Just as it was getting good, my classmates, along with the crowd, began to boo Bakugou. They finally stop when Eraser kindly tells them to shut up.
"Geeze, how can Sensei say that," Mina says with a pout. "Bakugou needs to end it already."
"Then you're obviously not paying attention to the same match I'm watching."
The entire class turns to look at me as I point to the field as the smoke begins to clear.
"Bakugou-san isn't torturing Uraraka-san. Like sensei pointed out, he's treating her like any other opponent. If any of you were her friends, then you'll support her 'til the end. We're all here to become hero's so why go easy on each other? If you really think a villain is going to go easy on you because you're a female, then you should quit here and now. Either that or accept the fact that you'll most likely die out in the field."
As I finally finish speaking, Uraraka finally releases her trap. At first, I did think of the gravity-defying girl as a weak link in the class. Now, I have a newfound respect for Uraraka and her willpower. Sadly, it wasn't enough for her to win the match.
"What a pity," I mutter. "If only Uraraka-san had gone for a bit longer, but oh well."
"At least she tried her best," Ojiro growled at me. I raise an eyebrow as he turns to face me. "I don't know what the deal is with you, Bakugou, or Todoroki, but I've had enough."
"Enough of what?"
"The way you act like you're better than us."
By this point, the entire class is staring at us. Even some of class B is peaking over. So many eyes are staring down at me, waiting for me to choke. No matter how warm my quirk makes my body, I always feel cold and detached in these situations. I guess it's due to the many challenges I've faced with my mother and father.
"I can't speak for Bakugou-san, and I refuse to talk for Shoto," I begin to say as I lean forward and place my elbows on my knees. "But I will say this. When it comes to the world, it's survival of the fittest. Look back at the early sightings of quirks, and you'll notice a trend. Even now, you can see it. Hell, before quirks came along, it took a different form, but it was still there. All I'm doing is trying to survive and fight for those who are weak. Now, if you're upset by what I said, then might I ask why?"
"Because it's not true!"
"What isn't? That you're wasting an opportunity to grow and be challenged by those around you. That Shinso-kun has a better quirk than you and deserves a spot in our class. Or the point of people dying? Death is a blessing, you fool."
"Maybe to you, but not to the rest of us."
"So you would rather the villains torture you. Whip you into submission and cleanse you in salt baths; so you don't die of infection. Do you want to become their slave, or in your case, their pet? Maybe, you would rather them rape you? A lot of them don't care if you're male or female. Sex is sex."
Ojiro couldn't answer a single question, and every person in the class could no longer face me.
"We're children, but they don't care. If you can't get that through your head, then please leave. Oh, and by the way, Ojiro-kun," I called his attention back to me. "Don't ever tell me what's better. Not until you watch a loved one die like I had to watch my Grandfather die."
No one says a word after that. All of us, except Midoriya, watch Cementos clean up the field for the next fight. I wonder if I was a bit too harsh to them, but the truth needed to be said. The life of a hero isn't all fun and games. It's terrifying, and if you're not ready to face it, then the best thing to do is go home.
Before my Grandma's retirement, I would go to the hero hospital to eat lunch with her. Although she never told me about her patients, I know many of them suffered. Even with All Might acting as the symbol of peace, evil remained in the world.
When I was a little girl, around ten years old, my Grandpa was killed on live TV. I was home alone with my baby brother, who was only four at the time. Having to watch my Grandpa's murder changed something within me. When it comes to villains or anyone I deem my opponent, I become detached. I don't want to die like Soundwave. I don't want my family to mourn my death, nor do I want to prove my father right.
Being a hero isn't easy; I know that. It may not sound like it, but I'm just trying to make my classmates see the light (no pun intended). I can't help that I don't sugarcoat my words. Eraserhead practically raised me, so it's a bit difficult to be sweet when I'm used to being straightforward.
Instead of internally debating the subject any further, I focus on the conversations starting up around me since Bakugo's return.
"Hey, Bakugo," Sero greets our classmate. "That was tough, huh? Playing the bad guy."
"Even if it was because of the match-up, you played an amazing villain, Bakugo," Asui mentions from beside Jirou.
"But man, I can't believe you were able to aim such a huge blast at a frail girl," Kaminari said to the angry boy. "I couldn't help but hold back."
"Homura-san completely overwhelmed you, Kaminari."
"Y-you know what, Tsu..."
I remain quiet as I listen to the two speak. I'm glad I did since it allowed me to hear something I wasn't expecting from Bakugou.
"Tch, what part of her was frail?"
Hm, that's interesting, I thought to myself as I analyzed the boy. I file the scene away for another day since I rather have my undivided attention directed to the next match.
By the time Uraraka returns from Recovery girl, Midoriya and Shoto are barely stepping onto the field. A part of me is curious to see how this fight will turn out.
As the match begins with Shoto making the first move, I'm not surprised to see the injuries appearing on Midoriya as he counters. Like I mentioned before, Midoriya's quirk is a double-edged sword. It doesn't get any better as the competition continues. Even the rest of the class can tell that much. However, when Bakugo explains to his group of friends what's going on right now is more than it seems. This match is one of endurance.
Honestly, I didn't think of that since it wouldn't make sense for someone like Midoriya to pull a stunt like that. He must have realized Shoto can fight longer than him, especially since Midoriya is the only one attaining injuries.
"I don't understand this kid," I mutter to my group.
At the same time, Shoto finally closes the gap between them as his ice takes hold of Midoriya's foot. Quickly, Midoriya changes a flick to a punch as he sends both the ice and Shoto across the field. The two of them remain where they're standing as a conversation begins to flow between them. I'm too far from them to understand what they're saying, but it seems like the match is about to end, or so I thought.
Just as Shoto sends a glacier of ice at Midoriya, a voice, more powerful than any I've ever heard before, rings loud and clear over the stadium.
"Where are you looking?"
Soon, another mighty blast of wind knocks Shoto to the edge of the ring. Had it not been for his ice, he would have fallen out of bounds. The entire arena remains silent, and it's only thanks to the silence that I'm able to hear Midoriya's following words.
"You're trembling, Todoroki-kun. Quirks are physical abilities, too. There's a limit to how much cold your body can take, isn't there? And isn't that something you could solve by using the heat from your left side? Everyone's fighting with everything they've got... To win and get closer to their dream... To become number one... You want to win with just half your strength?! You haven't put a single scratch on me yet, you know! Come at me with everything you got!"
Without realizing it, I stand to my feet, walking to the very front of the class. Looking at the boy, I begin to recognize what he intends to do. But he can't... Right?
"why?" a small, almost scared voice inquires. "why are you doing this?"
Is that my voice? It sounds like it, but I can't even feel my jaw moving.
So shocked by the turn-in events, I hardly pay attention to those behind me. The only thing I can focus on is the fight. With every struggle Midoriya puts up, the slower Shoto gets. The two aren't willing to give an inch, but it's Midoriya that truly terrifying me.
"That's what I want to be!" Midoriya yells at Shoto. I couldn't hear the first part of what he was saying due to the background noise, but now it's clear what he's saying as he screams at the top of his lungs while launching himself at Shoto. "That's why- Everyone is giving it their all!..."
Shoto stumbles to his feet from the hit. Midoriya continues speaking, but this time in a lower voice for a few moments until he raises it again. "Right now, I think you should stop screwing around! That's why... I will win!" Once again, Midoriya runs towards Shoto, punching my best friend on the stomach. "I'll surpass you!" As Shoto struggles to get to his feet, Midoriya yells one last time. "It's your power, isn't it?!"
A single tear falls from my eyes before evaporating against my skin. To see someone risk their future, their health, and more to save my best friend is almost too much. Here I thought Midoriya was in over his head being in the hero course, but in many ways, he's the best upcoming hero out here.
Without warning, Shoto unleashes his fire for the entire world to see. The warm air hits us in force. I didn't even notice my smile growing by the second at my best friend.
"Why are you trying to save him?" I silently ask as I watch the two.
"SHOTO!" Endeavor yells from across the stadium. "Have you finally accepted yourself?! That's it! Good! It all starts from here for you! With my blood, you will surpass me... You will fulfill my desire!"
"Endeavor suddenly shouts encouragement...?" Present Mic awkwardly comments. "Such a doting father."
"YEAH, RIGHT!" I yell with a smile on my face. "SHUT UP, OLD MAN, AND STAY OUT OF THIS! LET'S GO, SHOTO!"
As Shoto and Midoriya activate their quirks one last time, both Midnight and Cementos attempt to stop the fight. Nevertheless, it's too late as the quirks clash against one another, creating a blast. Quickly I throw a shield up to protect my class, but the wind is so strong it drives me back a few inches.
"Thank you, Homura-chan," Momo tells me as I finally drop my shield. I don't bother replying as I try to figure out who one. As the smoke finally clears, it's evident who won as Midoriya collapses to the ground. When I watch him fall, it's like the entire world goes silent for me. As if my hearing aids were acting up.
"Midoriya...?"
Without a second thought, I start running. I don't stop until I reach my grandma's seat, but when I arrive, it's empty. Turning to the hero sitting next to my family, I begin to question him. "Did you see where the old woman and little boy went?"
"No, I'm sorry."
"It's fine," I quickly mutter as I run back up the stairs.
I keep running until I hear a voice call my name, "Amaterasu."
Turning around, I see my grandma, but not Miko-nii; however, before I can ask anything, my Grandma starts speaking.
"He's with Eraser and Mic. I figured your friend might need my help."
"Well, he's not exactly my fr- You know what, it doesn't matter! Let's go."
It takes us only a matter of moments to reach our destination. Once we do, I notice Recovery girl pushing a group out of the infirmary. One of them must have heard us coming since I heard one of them calling me. I pay them no mind as I race to Recovery girl.
"Recovery girl is-"
"I'm sorry, sweetheart, but I can't speak right now."
"I just-"
"It's alright, firefly," my grandma gently tells me as she places a hand on my shoulder. "I'll handle this."
"Sumiye? Is that you?" Recovery girl inquires with a smile on her face. "I haven't seen you in years."
"It has been some time, hasn't it, Chiyo?"
"What are you doing here?"
"Well, my granddaughter is friends with the young man there, so I figured I would help you with his treatment plan. I already scanned Midoriya-kun when he was carried out of the arena. Of course, if you don't mind, I have a few ideas that can help him."
"Of course, come in-"
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but can I see Midoriya really quick?" I asked the healing hero. She hesitates for a moment before nodding her head. Knocking on the door, Recovery girl alerts her patient she's about to reenter.
As we enter the room, my eyes immediately land on Midoriya and the terrible state he's in. I was about to approach him when I noticed another man within the room. It's the same skinny sickly man from our school.
"Hello," I mutter as I quickly bow to the man. He panic's for a second when he sees me before greeting me.
"Toshinori-kun, I see you're here comforting the student. What a sight," my Grandma says in a mysterious voice. "By the way, this is my granddaughter, Homura Amaterasu."
"This is your granddaughter?!"
"Yes, although I'm not surprised you didn't notice since you seem considerably busy these days."
"Well, I- um, -ahem-"
"My little firefly, why don't you go speak to Midoriya now. I'm sure he'll appreciate it. The rest of us will step into the hall for a second, okay?"
"Uh, yeah, thanks..."
As the adults file out of the room, I feel myself freezing in place. I have no idea what to say to Midoriya. Honestly, I must be a confusing person to this boy. My treatment has been nothing but hot and cold during each of our encounters. How do I-?
"Homura-san?" I hear a pained voice speak to me. Looking at Midoriya, it's easy to tell I'm not the only nervous person in the room. In a few short steps, I close the distance between us. Using my quirk, I close the curtain around us for my privacy.
"I know everyone is outside, but this just helps..." I mutter an explanation. "Um, I brought my Grandma... Did I tell you she's a world-famous surgeon? 'Cause, she is. Um, yeah..."
An awkward silence follows my statement as I mess with my hands. I'm not exactly the best in these situations. Not only that, but this is Midoriya of all people. How do I even talk to him? Why did I even think this was a good idea? Because I want to ask him something.
"Homura-san, why are you here?"
Looking at the green-haired boy, I couldn't stop myself from asking the question I've been yearning to know. The one question I had asked at the beginning of his and Shoto's fight.
"Why did you help?"
"What?"
"Why did you help Shoto?" I asked again in a stronger voice. "Why? Clearly, it hasn't benefited you, so why do it?"
"Because whether you two like it or not, you deserve some help."
"But you don't know us! How could you throw away your chance to help him!
"...Because he looked sad."
I couldn't even come up with a response to his reply. I just kept staring at him in confusion as his bright eyes shined back at me. I felt my head shaking back and forth as I took a step forward.
"You're hurt..."
"Right now, I am. Still, this is nothing compared to what Todoroki-kun had to grow up with."
"NO! You don't get to compare this to Shoto's childhood. It's completely different!"
"Homura-san," Midoriya whispers, and I can't help but take another step closer. "I came here to be a hero, so I'm willing to take the punishment."
"But why?! I don't understand what's motivating you!"
"You are," Midoriya said with a clear and confident voice.
"Huh? B-but, how?"
"Isn't it obvious, Homura-san?"
"No, it's not! Y-you, -I- I don't know!"
"I want to help because I know I should...So you don't have to do all of it alone."
"...What- I..." random words spill from my mouth as I begin to stutter a reply. Instead of getting annoyed, Midoriya smiles at me as he waits for me to speak. His smile is so warm and kind.
"He said something terrible to you, didn't he?" Midoriya randomly inquires, and it catches me off guard. I quickly compose myself as I think about the boy's question.
"You put the pieces from our previous encounters together," I mumble to myself. With a nod of Midoriya's head, I know I'm right. "You're pretty smart, I'll give you that, but I'm fine."
"No, you're not. I should know."
"Because of your relationship with Bakugou?"
"Yeah..."
"Then why are you his friend?"
"I could ask you the same thing."
"But that's different."
"How?"
"Because-, it doesn't happen all the time..." I weakly explain before I give up. I lower my gaze as I realize how bad it's gotten between Shoto and I.
Midoriya and I were silent for a moment after my last statement. It's not that I don't appreciate what Midoriya did for Shoto and what he's trying to do for me, but I can't let him get too close. Every time someone comes into my life to try and help me, I feel like it backfires on them. The last thing I want to do is to cause any more problems for anyone.
"Homura-san, I realize I don't know you or your situation or exactly what you're going through, but I swear I'll save you."
"Heh, you dummy," I chuckled, finally locking eyes with him as I put a hand on his cheek. "How can you save me when you're in a hospital bed? Just worry about getting better."
A slight blush comes over Midoriya's face from my comment, and I can't help but allow a smile to appear on mine. How can such a sweet boy worry about me when he's in pain is beyond me. Instead of saving me, he needs to worry about himself.
"By the way, it's Ama-chan," I tell him as I place a quick kiss on his temple. I watch as his eyes widen before I wave goodbye.
Exiting the room, I excuse myself from the adults to find my brother. It doesn't take long, considering my Grandma told me where she left him. Knocking on the, I hear a muffled approval to enter the room.
I quietly greet everyone as I close the door behind me. Mic informs me that my battle against Iida won't take place until later. Counting on the amount of damage Shoto and Midoriya made, it's not surprising.
"Miroku, stay with Mic for a moment," Eraserhead said as he got up from his seat. "I need to talk with your sister."
Without questioning him, I silently followed my Sensei out of the room. We didn't go far, but it's far enough that Mic can't eavesdrop on our conversation. For a moment, neither one of us speak. I don't even understand why my Sensei needs to talk to me alone. Not that I'm mad, I'm just confused by his timing.
"What's wrong?" Eraserhead finally questions me as I avert my vision from him.
"Huh? Nothing, why?"
"If you're going to lie to me, you should try looking at me first."
Realizing he has a point, I turn my attention to him. I hadn't even noticed that peculiarity of mine 'til Eraserhead pointed it out the other day. Still, simply knowing about it doesn't mean I got rid of the habit of looking away from people when I'm lying.
"Nothing, I'm just worried about Midoriya-kun. He sustained numerous injuries."
"True, but he'll have to learn from his mistakes. If he continues to push himself without regard to his physical wellbeing, there will be repercussions."
"I know, but this wouldn't have happened if I had done something sooner."
"Amaterasu, you are not Todoroki's keeper. His problems don't fall onto you-"
"But I'm his best friend! Shouldn't I do something?"
"Sometimes, it's the people we know the least who impact us the most."
"...I guess..."
"Plus, it's not as if he ever accepts your help, that much is obvious. He even hurt you earlier."
My eyes widened at my Sensei's statement, but I didn't deny it.
"You're wondering how I know, aren't you?"
"Well, we weren't exactly within earshot."
"Yes, but before you left the field after the cavalry battle, I was observing your interaction with Shoto. I couldn't see your facial expression, but I can tell when something is wrong by your stance. After lunch, I also noticed how you kept your distance from him."
"What a nosey man you are," I comment as I cross my arms. "Yeah, he said something that hurt me, even ticked me off. Then he acted like it never happened. Jerk."
"Yet you're still looking after him?"
"Of course, he's my best friend. Why wouldn't I help him?"
"I'm not saying you shouldn't help, but you need to worry about yourself for once."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Amaterasu, you should forfeit the competition."
"But you told me-!"
"I know what I said, but you aren't in the appropriate space of mind to compete. I'm worried if you continue, you'll get hurt."
"I'll get hurt regardless!"
"You know what I mean," Aizawa huffed at me. "The field will be ready soon. Just think about it, alright. I don't want you to face Todoroki or anyone else when you're like this. You have a lot of pent-up resent and aggression. If you release it out in the field, someone could get hurt."
"So you want me to run away?"
"No, but-"
Rather than arguing with my Sensei, I choose to walk away before he can finish speaking. I need to find a place where I can relax, so I head to the waiting room. I remain there until my round against Iida. I never hesitate as I proceed to the field. What I need right now isn't to run away from my destiny but to run towards it. I'm tired of hearing how much of a coward I am and how my dream isn't worth it. If no one is going to believe in me then I'll just have to go at it alone.
3rd person POV
"Congratulations, Sumiye," Recovery girl states as her friend assists Midoriya into a sitting position.
"Whatever for, Chiyo?"
"Your granddaughter has just won her round," Recovery girl replies as she points to her headgear. "They just notified me through the comms."
"Ah, I see-"
"Ama-chan won!" The young green-haired boy exclaimed. A heavy blush appears on his face as the room full of adults turns to look at him. "I mean, it's just- well, I-I-"
"Thank you for your excitement, Midoriya," Sumiye smiles as she steps to the side so Recovery girl can finish healing the boy.
Once everything is said and done, Midoriya leaves with All Might right behind him. At first, Chiyo thought Sumiye would excuse herself to return to her grandchildren. Instead, she found a place to sit as she breathed a heavy sigh.
"Sumiye, are you alright?"
"No, my friend, I am not well."
"What is it? Are you upset about the competition?"
"No, I'm upset with myself."
Confused by the sudden change in the atmosphere, Recovery girl sits near her friend as she awaits an explanation. After a few moments of silence, Sumiye speaks.
"My dear friend, it has been three years since I've last seen you. So much has happened, and I do not believe I have enough time."
"Nonsense Sumiye, we have plenty of time to converse. Amaterasu doesn't have to compete until a few rounds from now. Even if that is not enough, you are free to visit me at any time. You know this."
"But you don't know this... I'm dying, Chiyo."
The healing hero could not find a way to reply to her long-time friend. Her throat felt as if it was closing in on itself as her vision began to swim with tears. Out of the entire planet, Sumiye was her best friend. When she stopped speaking to Chiyo for those three years, a great sadness fell upon the old woman. Chiyo waited for the day to see Sumiye again, and now that it's here, she must part ways with her again. What a terrible joke the world has decided to play on her.
"What is it?"
"Cancer."
"The treatment plans?"
"They have all failed me. We tried to surgically remove the tumor, but it didn't stop the growth. I tried radiation therapy and medications to stop the cancer from spreading, but nothing works."
"Your family?"
"Doesn't know a thing," the taller woman sadly told her short friend. "Three years ago, when I first realized I was sick, I decided to keep it a secret. Luckily, due to my many years in the medical field, I have various contacts. I immediately scheduled surgery with an associate of mine. At first, it seemed as if it worked, and if I followed our treatment plan to a T. I should've been fine-"
"How did your family not notice the surgery?"
"Simple, I went to a 'conference' and a mini-vacation," the woman explained. "When I returned, I acted as if nothing happened, but the tumor came back. I drank all types of medications to prevent the spread, but nothing worked. Radiation Therapy helped at first until it didn't. With Radiation Therapy, I wouldn't lose my hair; thus, no one would know about my illness. In the end, it was all for nothing."
"How long do you have?"
"I'm not sure. I stopped caring, so I could have months left or perhaps if I'm lucky, a year. That is why I came here. I stopped most of my treatment plans up to this point. I'm on the last of my medications, and I need your help?"
"What can I do? You know as well as I do, I can not reverse your cancer," the healing hero sadly admitted. "This is one of the few times I can do nothing to save someone."
"I know, but you can assist me with something else," Sumiye replies as she pulls out a letter. "These past three years, I have done my best to spend as much time with my grandchildren as I can. Lately, being fully aware of my coming death, I have prepared my will and funeral. Everything is in order, and my lawyer will handle all that I require him to do. Still, there is one thing I can only entrust to you. Knowing you work at U.A. I decided I would use this opportunity to come to the festival to tell you everything. As well as placing this letter in your reliable steady hands."
"Why me? Who is it for?" asked the shorter woman as she took the letter from her friend. The envelope was pitch black with a maroon wax seal. On the other side, addressed in silver metallic sharpie, is Aizawa Shouta's name. "Eraserhead?"
"He will know what to do. He's the only one who can save her when I'm gone."
"Amaterasu?"
"My poor sweet firefly doesn't have much time left in this world if I continue to allow the mistreatment she endures for the sake of our family. I've tried these past three years to be on my best behavior, so I won't get kicked out of the house all to stay near Amaterasu. However, I can no longer stand by and allow my idiot daughter and her husband to kill Amaterasu's light. Before I die, I will secure a home for my dear firefly."
"What of Miroku?"
"He will be fine. He doesn't wish to be a hero. His parents adore him, so Miroku doesn't need me. I will give him plenty of love, but I must save his sister first. For that reason alone, I've been looking into relocating myself and Amaterasu. I have an old friend who owns some real estate. Once my son-in-law tries to kick us out, I will be ready. Still, when I die, then it will be up to Aizawa to help her the rest of the way."
"I know your relationship with your daughter and son-in-law is tense, especially since the passing of your husband, but perhaps if you tell them the truth, things will change."
"For how long, my dear friend? Until my death? Then what? Miroku can't help his sister without suffering in her place, so it's up to me. I should have done this long ago, but I am the true coward for standing to the side. Even Eraserhead helped my dear firefly more than I ever have!" Sumiye cried as she broke down in tears. Recovery girl brought her a box of kleenex as she patted Sumiye's back. "I just want to save her."
"You will; I know it," Chiyo reassures her friend. "But you can't do that from here. Go watch the competition, and rest assured that I will deliver the letter when the time comes."
"Thank you, Chiyo."
"Of course, but in return, you must promise you'll call me every now and then. I miss you, my dear friend."
"I promise."
So I wanted to do this in one chapter, but there is too much content. Instead, there will be another chapter to finish off the festival arc. After that, we'll jump straight into the rest of the story with Sumiye, before returning for the Hero killer arc. As always, please let me know if you have any comments, questions, or concerns. Also, leave a review to let me know what you think about the story.
