When Kitty opened the door, she quickly grabbed Matt's hand and pulled him into the house and the living room. "Sit down, Matt." She told him as she quickly lit another lamp and sat it on a table near him.
Matt complied with a little bit of puzzlement. "Kitty, I..."
"Huh huh." Kitty shook her head at him. "Don't say anything for a minute, Matt. Will you? Just sit there."
Matt nodded but he had no idea what she was doing as she sat down next to him, studying his face intently.
"Do you love me, Matt?" Kitty finally asked. "Do you?"
"Of course, I do." Matt answered. "I told you that."
"Tell me again." She told him. "Just one more time, tell me again."
Matt wasn't sure why but he felt it important to meet her eye to eye when he answered. "I love you, Kitty Russell. I will always love you."
Kitty didn't reply at first. She just continued to study his face. Finally, "Are you sure you're through with that badge. I don't mean maybe or through for now but are you sure you're through forever with it. No going back for any reason."
"I'm sure." Matt answered. "I wouldn't be here if I wasn't. I knew you would never come back otherwise. Like I told you, I had a choice to make and I made it. I chose you."
Again, Kitty sat silently studying him. Finally, she nodded with a smile before throwing herself into his arms. "I believe you, Matt Dillon. I believe you."
Matt pushed her back, it was his turn to study her face. "Does that mean..."
"Um huh." She grinned. "I will."
With a whoop, Matt pulled her back to him, his lips seeking hers to seal the deal. "Let's not wait." He said excitedly when the kiss ended. "Let's get married tomorrow or the day after or as soon as we can. We'll have to find a preacher but..."
"I know a preacher that would be happy to perform the ceremony." She told him. "He's the pastor of my church."
"Your... your church?" Matt had never thought about Kitty going to church.
"You're not the only one who made some changes." She answered with a chuckle. "Like I told you, I don't want things to be the same as they were."
Matt nodded as he pulled her back into his arms. "Well, maybe somethings can be the same, huh?" Leaning down he kissed her again.
Kitty laughed as she fell back into his arms. "Oh, that will never change, Mr. Dillon. That will never change."
M&K
Staring out the train window, Kitty smiled at the memory of that night and the next, after their wedding. Pastor Henry had been surprised but pleased when she'd asked him to marry them. With his wife as a witness, he smiled the during the entire ceremony. Kitty knew he could tell how happy she was. And she was happy. She wasn't sure what the future was going to hold for the two of them but as long as they were together, with nothing to keep them apart, she was fine.
Looking down at the wedding ring on her hand, she grinned as she rubbed her stomach. For the first time, since she and Matt had come together, she had taken no precautions against pregnancy and she didn't plan on it any time soon. Having children was the only topic she and Matt hadn't really talked much about but she doubted he would care very much if a baby came their way in a year or so. Considering her age and previous injuries, she knew it was possible she might not be able to get pregnant, but she was going to try hard for it any way.
"Conductor said we'd be in Dodge before too long." Matt smiled as he sat down next to his new wife.
Kitty nodded with a smile. "Yeah, that's what he told me." Kitty sighed. "I wonder what kind of reaction we'll get when we get there."
"We'll be welcomed by those that count." Matt told her. "Doc in particular will be anxious to see you. You know, you're leaving hurt him too."
Kitty dropped her head. "That wasn't my intention. But at the time…"
Matt reached over and took her hand, holding it gently in his. "I know, Kitty, I know. And Doc knew too. As a matter of fact, he lit into me pretty good when you left and I didn't try to stop you. He called me worse than a fool."
A small smile lit Kitty's face. "I bet he did. But, of course, you didn't listen."
It was Matt's turn to drop his head. "No, I didn't and I'm more to blame than you for the pain that everyone felt without you there."
"Pain?" Kitty frowned. "I never intended to cause you or anyone else any pain, Matt. I…"
"I know." Matt stopped her again. "And we've already hashed all this out. I messed up when I let you go but if I hadn't of, I might never have realized how much I had in you. It's sad to say but you're leaving is the only thing that could have ever make me see that. I wouldn't have ever changed my way of seeing things, if you'd stayed."
"Wow." Kitty shook her head. "I don't guess I even thought about that, Matt. Honestly, I wasn't trying to make you change. I had lost all hope that would ever happen. I just couldn't keep going the way it was.
"I know." Matt sighed. "And like I said, I was the one in the wrong then. I just couldn't let go of that…"
"Damn badge?" Kitty grinned up at him.
Matt returned the grin. "Yeah. You know, I still have a desire to right the wrongs and keep out bad guys when I can, but not as a lawman. Not anymore. I'd druther be Kitty Dillon's husband and the owner of the sweetest ranch in Dodge."
Kitty leaned up and kissed him. "Now that's an idea I like."
Matt grinned. "Me too, Mrs. Dillon. Me too." Pulling her close, Matt kissed her again but held himself in check due to where they were. "I can't wait until we get home." He whispered as he pulled back. "I plan on doing more than just kissing you."
Kitty chuckled. "I hope so, Mr. Dillon. I sure do hope so."
END
A/N: I'm going to leave this as the end. When they got back to Dodge, they moved into their ranch, raised a child or two and lived happily ever after. No need to go into details in writing. They're always so much richer in our imaginations.
