"My last thought was of you," he whispered and her eyes widened slightly.
"Or, at least, what I thought was my last thought," he rephrased.
Silence.
Silence.
"It was peaceful. I finally got some decent rest," he mused lightly and she smiled at him lovingly.
"Let's get some more rest," she said and his grip tightened.
"I'm not leaving. I'll rest beside you," she said laying down next to him.
Into the Night…
It had gotten quiet. Only the crickets chirped loudly around them. Greer stared up at the sky; at the stars. She sat up slowly, careful not to disturb the sleeping man beside her. She noticed Hange sitting on a rock facing the port. She walked over and sat beside her friend quietly.
Silence.
"Planning our next move?" Greer asked and Hange smiled weakly.
"I'm actually not thinking of anything at the moment," she grinned suddenly and Greer chuckled.
Silence.
"You're doing a really good job, Zoe," she said and Hange looked at her.
Silence.
Greer smiled at her best friend.
"I thought you should know that. You're a good commander and I'd follow you anywhere," she said and Hange felt her vision blur.
Silence.
"I'm sorry," Hange whispered and Greer frowned.
"For?"
"I believed you…back then," she started.
Silence.
"For a split second I believed you'd joined Eren. And in that split second, I was the worst friend," she said and wiped at her eyes.
Silence.
"It's alright, Zoe—"
"—no, it isn't. Greer, you pulled me out of a titan's mouth. You've risked your life for me more times than I can count. To think you betrayed us…was a betrayal of our friendship," she said firmly.
Silence.
Hange turned to Greer seeing her body tremble. Her eyes widened.
"Are you laughing?" she asked incredulously.
Greer covered her mouth to stifle her laugh.
"Greer, I was trying to be serious!" Hange whined and Greer laughed harder, trying to muffle it.
"I-I know, I know, Zoe. It's just…serious doesn't suit you. Especially when you're saying nonsense. Bad friend? Please. You're the best. I wouldn't have you any other way," she said off handedly.
Silence.
Silence.
Hange slowly leaned into Greer and rested her head on her shoulder.
Silence.
"Thank you for saving him. Was it bad?" Greer asked and Hange nodded slowly.
"It was touch and go for about a day. But he's a strong one. And he's got a lot to live for," she whispered and Greer took in a breath.
Silence.
"When we were out here…just me and him…I thought about just going," she gestured outward with her hand.
Silence.
"Maybe we could just start over somewhere far away. No more war, no more titans, no more death," she stopped.
Silence.
"It would have found you eventually," Greer said and Hange nodded.
"Yeah," she agreed weakly.
Greer gently rubbed her best friend's head.
"We're going to finish this, Zoe. Then we can find home again. Wherever that is. It ends with us," she whispered and Hange took her hand tightly.
After a few minutes of stargazing, they agreed to try to get some rest. She crawled back onto the cot and rested beside Levi, only to see him awake.
"Sorry, I just went to chat with Hange for a bit. She needed a pep talk," she tried to muse, but he saw through it.
She gently caressed the bandages wrapped around his face.
"Can you breathe under all this wrapping?" she smiled and his eyes softened.
"Barely," he mused back slightly and was relieved to see her giggle quietly.
Her fingers traced over the bandaging.
"Does it hurt?" she asked more serious now.
"Not so much anymore," he admitted and she nodded.
She leaned in closer to him and rested her head against his.
The Next Day…
"So, just to be clear, we're going to go to the port to use the Azumabito clan's airship and fly to Marley before Eren's colossal titan army reaches it?" she asked and Hange nodded.
Silence.
"Say it, Greer," Hange said and Greer didn't waste any time.
"I get that there are innocent people in Marley. But our main concern should be to get in front of the Rumbling, correct?" she asked and Hange nodded.
"Yes," she confirmed and Greer nodded slowly.
"She doesn't want to save those people. She still believes in Eren," Yelena said smirking.
Greer looked at her and her smirk faded. There was something dark in her eyes now. Something dangerous.
"I don't care about Marley, you're right about that. But I do know that what Eren is planning isn't the way," she admitted and Yelena stood quiet.
"Let's get moving. Time is against us," Hange said and they left to the port.
The Jeagerists were already occupying it. Hange quickly deduced from the fact that the airship was still intact that the Jeagerists were not certain that anyone planned to oppose Eren and would not destroy the airship unless absolutely necessary. As they watched the harbor Hange realized that, based on the trail of steam left by Eren's Colossus Titans, Marley had already begun to feel the effects of the Rumbling.
"We're running out of time. What's the plan?" Annie asked frustrated.
Silence.
"I'll distract Floch; trick him into freeing the Azumabito mechanics so that they can activate the airship," Greer said and they all looked at her.
She shrugged.
"He still thinks I'm with him and the other Jeagerists. Let's use that to our advantage," she said and Hange nodded.
Levi stood quiet, reluctantly.
"You don't have a lot of time," Mikasa said and Greer nodded.
"Oh, I know. Start thinking of a backup plan. This is definitely not going to work," she mused and headed out onto the dock.
Needless to say, Greer was right. The plan went awry real fast and Floch alerted the Jeagerists in the port that they were under attack.
"Reiner, Annie! Wreak havoc!" Greer yelled above the commotion.
Hange, Magath and Jean helped Mikasa escort the Azumabito to the basement of the building they were being held in, allowing Reiner and Annie the freedom to transform and fight the Jeagerists as titans.
Greer landed on Annie's shoulder and cut down a Jeagerist about to attack her nape. The female titan glanced back at Greer, surprised.
"Don't get sentimental, we need you for now," she muttered and hopped off Annie's shoulder, swinging to slice into more former comrades.
While sheltered, the mechanics informed the group with them, that it would take them at least half a day to prepare the flying boat for launch. The amount of time it would require and the rate that Eren's titans were traveling meant that they had no chance of saving Liberio. Kiyomi brought up the idea of navigating the flying boat to an island off Marley's coast, Odiha, where it could be serviced quicker. The group agreed, not really having much of a choice and knowing certain members of the group would be upset. Hange managed to bring the news of the new plan to Mikasa before engaging the Jeagerists, helping to distract them as the Azumabitos got to the ship. Once the ship was ready to leave, the group helped some of their injured comrades and got on the boat, departing.
Silence.
Silence.
Greer began to clean her blades, trying to ignore the fact that it was her former comrades' blood she was cleaning off of them. She glanced at Pieck.
"You okay?" she asked and Pieck looked at her, surprised.
"No," she admitted and Greer nodded.
"I didn't know Magath well," she said and Pieck tensed.
Silence.
"But he seemed like a pretty cool dude. In another life, I think we would have really…gotten on each other's nerves," she mused and Pieck let out a quiet chuckle, surprising herself.
Greer smiled at her. Pieck wiped at her eyes.
"Definitely," she confirmed and Greer chuckled lightly.
"Gather round, I have news," Hange said and the group all walked over.
Silence.
"We will be heading to Odiha instead of Liberio," she announced and the warriors looked distressed.
"What the hell do you mean by that?!" Annie growled.
"Liberio can't be saved. We won't make it in time," Hange said and Annie shook her head.
Silence.
"I'm leaving," she said and Hange sighed.
"There are more lives at stake than just Marley and Liberio," she said softly.
Silence.
Annie walked off and Armin followed her. Greer returned below deck with Levi.
Silence.
Silence.
"Say it," Levi said and Greer looked at him.
"What happens when we get in front of Eren?" she asked and Levi knew this question was coming.
"We stop him."
"Stop him or kill him?" Greer asked and Levi thought about it.
"I don't know yet. I'm leaning more towards kill."
"Levi—"
"—Greer, his plan is asinine. Kill everyone so Paradis never has to go to war again? People will find a way to go to war. It's in our nature. Peace doesn't come this way," he said and she stared at him.
She moved closer and gently reached up, beginning to take off some of the bandaging. She paused briefly, leaving a bandage around his eye. His wounds were healing nicely. She traced the wounds gently, wondering if they'll leave scars, and he shuddered slightly.
"Still so good looking," she mused and he cracked a smirk, pulling her to him, their lips meeting gently.
She relished the feel of his lips on hers again. She unconsciously moved closer to him, her hands traveling to the hem of his shirt. She felt him tense slightly as her hands touched his bare skin and bandages, beneath his shirt. She broke the kiss and stared at him.
Silence.
Silence.
"What did it feel like?" she asked and Levi furrowed his eyebrows.
"What did what feel like?"
"Being blown up. What did you feel?" she asked and his eyes widened slightly.
Silence.
"I felt a rush of heat and then, thankfully, nothing," he admitted and it was her turn to tense.
Silence.
"When I woke up…that was when the pain hit. It was intense and constant," he recounted.
"And now?" she asked, her hand skimming over his abdomen lightly, causing him to suck in a breath.
"What do you feel now?" she asked quietly, her hand traveling lower, skimming the lining of his pants.
"You," he whispered and their eyes met.
"Just you," he breathed and their lips met again.
She carefully pulled his pants down and removed her own. She turned so that she straddled him and he pressed his lips to hers in a slow, passionate kiss. She felt his tongue caress her bottom lip and her body immediately gave in, leaning into him. She opened her mouth, welcoming him and felt his tongue caress hers. Her mind immediately blanked. She wrapped her arms around his neck and she felt his hands travel down to her thighs, gripping them firmly. She could feel his hard length pressing into her and she let a soft moan escape her lips.
His grip tightened and in one swift movement, she was beneath him. She tensed, worried for a moment, but he seemed unfazed by the action. She arched her back, rubbing against him and he sucked in a deep breath trying to keep his composure. Levi gently pressed his hand to her lower back and lifted her up to meet him. She stopped him then.
"You'll tell me if it hurts," she stated more then asked.
"Don't insult me," he whispered and his lips met hers hungrily as he entered her at the same time.
Greer let out a loud moan and her hands delved into his hair, gripping it between her fingers tightly. A groan escaped his throat as he began a slow rhythm. His grip around her tightened unconsciously and she was surprised that he had so much strength back. He pulled her closer to him and her mind blanked again as she attacked his neck with tender kisses and licks. She playfully bit his earlobe and he growled lowly, his rhythm quickening.
He leaned down planting kisses all over her chest. He playfully nibbled on her nipple and her body jolted from the increasing amount of pleasure.
"Please…don't stop," she choked out and he groaned, placing firm kisses on her neck and licking the hollow of her throat.
They both felt their limit approaching and he picked up his pace. Greer wished they could remain in the moment forever, but she was at her end. She arched her back and cried out as an insurmountable pleasure overtook her. Her walls clenched around him and he gasped and shut his eyes tightly as he too reached his limit.
He rested his head in the crook of her shoulder tiredly and she encircled her arms around him, holding him to her; clinging to him. All the tension was gone from his body and she was happy to admit it was gone from hers as well. She felt lighter. She glanced down at the man in her arms and her grip tightened on him. He glanced up at her and she couldn't suppress her chuckle. His hair was so messy around his head. She ran her fingers through it and he sighed contently, closing his eyes. Greer cleared her throat as the thoughts began entering her head again.
"Say it," he whispered and their eyes met.
"I'm afraid," she confessed and he stared at her.
She nodded.
"I'm just afraid," she breathed and he held her tighter to him.
