Chapter I
Rebirth

'This isn't a dream,' The newborn baby thought as he laid in the crib. 'I'm actually a baby. I really did die but instead of letting me stay dead, some other worldly being decided to bring me back to life!' He slammed his tiny fist down onto the soft bedding of the crib. 'WHY!?' Thick tears began to roll down his chubby cheeks, but he refused to make any sounds except for a soft whimper. 'This has got to be a dream, right? My parents died in a fire. I ran inside but it was too late to save them. I died in that same fire,'

'So then why?' He wiped his tears away. 'Why am I still alive? This has to be a dream. If I really did reincarnate into another world...what about my parents? Why did I get another chance at life? Did they get reincarnated too? Most likely not since this is the Detective Conan World and they don't really know about anime,'

He let out a pained laugh. 'I died and got isekai'd! For fuck's sake, I didn't even have to get hit by Truck-kun! Most people would want to experience getting isekai'd, but I bet a lot of those people don't have anything to lose! I bet if they still had family and friends in the Real World, they wouldn't want to die and isekai!'

The infant's lips quivered. 'I have nothing left in the Real World. I lost my parents and then immediately lost my own life. It's not fair. I would trade my own second life so that they could live. I don't deserve a second life. My parents, even though I had lost most of my memories due to an incident a year prior, did their best to raise me and make sure I was loved. They're amazing people. Why did someone like me get another chance at life?'

"Ga," The other baby who occupied the same crib rolled over and her tiny hand accidentally slapped her sibling in the face.

'Ugh, I can't even get mad at her since she's just a baby,' The boy thought as he gently pushed away his sister's hand. 'I wonder...what if I just killed myself? No, that'd be impossible to do in these circumstances. I can't exactly starve myself. My current body is that of a newborn child, so my 'mother' won't let me end up in dangerous and unsafe situations,'

His eyelids began to feel heavy. 'Ugh...I can't stay awake for too long...I don't have a lot of energy as a baby…' He fell asleep without putting up a fight.

'Since there's nothing really mentally stimulating for me to do,' The boy thought. 'Let me see what information I've gathered about my current situation. I died and was reborn into the Detective Conan World. Judging by who my 'mother' is, Sera Mary, and that my 'father' is not in the picture, and I have one older brother, Haneda Shukichi, present, I was reborn as the twin brother of Sera Masumi,'

'Technically, at this point in time, they're Akai Mary, Akai Shukichi, and Akai Masumi. The name they gave me was Akai Mitsuharu. The nickname they gave me was Haru. I wasn't even reborn as a canon character, just some random OC. I'm not even supposed to exist in this world! What was the point of being reborn!?'

'Am I supposed to be some sort of hero? Prevent Kudo Shinichi from turning into Edogawa Conan? Prevent Miyano Akemi's death? Prevent Scotch's death? Help defeat the Organization? Well news flash: I'm not a fucking hero! I'm not even as close as smart compared to geniuses like Akai and Shinichi!'

Haru sighed as he began to close his eyes again. 'Whoever brought me back to life should've reincarnated my parents instead...'

It was a miracle he was still mentally sane. Was he even sane in the first place? No, he sure as hell wasn't mentally healthy. The image of his parents' corpses still burned bright in his mind. Sometimes, he could still feel the excruciating pain of the flames eating at his own body.

There were times that Haru allowed himself to cry and scream, to verbally let out all of his frustrations. He thrashed around and slammed his fists on whatever surface was nearby. Neither Mary nor Shukichi found this behavior strange since it was normal for a baby to cry. They didn't know the reason for his cries though.

The only reason Haru didn't go completely insane was because he could still remember a lot of episodes he had watched and chapters he had read. He would replay them in his head whenever he was awake and not having anything else to do. He had no interest in baby toys or baby playtime.

He just wanted to be alone with his dark thoughts. 'I'm going to die maybe at two or three years old? It depends on when I see an opportunity to kill myself. Besides, this family would do better without me. They were fine without Akai Mitsuharu existing in canon. My existence in this world will only be a burden to this family,'

'My parents would probably want me to live happily, but I can't. My heart just hurts too much. I can't do it. Living is too painful. I want to die and stay dead. I want to reunite with my parents. I have no reason to live,'

Mitsuharu did not care about his new family. He wasn't even going to stay for a long time since he did intend to die. He was cold and indifferent towards Mary, Shukichi, and Masumi. He would bite, punch, and kick at Mary and Shukichi. He wasn't cruel enough to physically harm a baby though.

One night, Masumi was pale and her breathing was shallow. She was sweating a lot. Mary didn't come in to immediately check on her, meaning that she was probably not looking at the baby monitor at the moment.

Haru tried to ignore her. 'This probably happened in canon too, so she'll be fine. Mary will eventually notice and help her,' But minutes continued to pass and he couldn't help but worry, despite not wanting to. He crawled over to her and flinched when he put a hand to her forehead. 'She's burning up!'

Masumi weakly opened her eyes to look at her twin brother.

Haru gently held her against his chest. 'If this happened in the normal timeline, Masumi would be fine. But what if it's an anomaly, like my existence? I can't let Masumi die,' He took a deep breath and screamed as loud as he could.

Both Mary and Shukichi sprinted into the nursery room.

"Hewp hewh," Haru pleaded through tears he hadn't realized he had been shedding.

Mary brought her daughter to the emergency room and fortunately, Masumi survived. Haru cried against Shukichi's chest when he heard the news. 'She's okay...She survived…'

"Hey Mom," Shukichi asked once both twins were sleeping soundly. "Did you also hear Haru say 'help her' when we got to the nursery?"

"You must've been imagining things," Mary brushed it off. "Haru's only two months old. It was probably some random baby sounds that coincidentally sounded like that,"

"Yeah, you're right," Shukichi agreed. 'But Haru was also holding Masumi and he looked directly at us when he said that. Mom's right though. Haru's too young to speak. If he did speak, he also spoke those two words in English instead of Japanese. We haven't taught them English yet,'

'Can I really live this new life?' Haru thought as he watched his sister sleep. 'I had resolved to just kill myself when given the opportunity. I had planned to join my parents in Afterlife. So then...why? Why did I decide to help Masumi? Why did I interfere instead of letting things play out?'

'I want to live. Part of me wants to live. I can't deny it. There's a part of me, even if it may be small, that wants to take advantage of this second chance at life. There's a part of me that wants to be loved. There's a part of me that wants to have a family again,'

'Mom...Dad...I hope you guys will be fine with my decision. I'm sorry I won't be able to join you as soon as possible. But I won't forget you guys. I may have been reborn as Akai Mitsuharu, but I am still also Michael Leo Field,'

I decided to go with one of the original concepts of Mitsuharu where he was actually going to be Masumi's twin brother. He also resembles Akai more than Shukichi in this rewrite.

In this version, time actually passes in the Detective Conan World.

I divided this story into arcs. The first arc will be the events prior to the Big Shrink.
