Beast Boy was walking Terra up to his room, still flustered by the fact that he had kissed two different girls within a span of a few hours. They entered his room, and he started taking clutter off of the top bunk and piling it in a corner on the opposite side of the room.
"Because Jinx took over your room," he said, "my top bunk is your only option for a bed. Sorry there's not more room for your stuff though."
"I don't have any stuff," Terra said. "Didn't exactly have time to pack anything."
Beast Boy looked at Terra and realized she hadn't brought anything with her. He chuckled nervously. "I knew that."
Terra giggled and gave Beast Boy a warm smile. "Are you feeling okay?"
"Totally! Yeah. Completely fine." He could feel himself beginning to sweat. "Look, we had a long night, and the rest of the team is crashing for a few hours. We should try to get some rest."
"Sure thing." Terra walked over to Beast Boy, wrapped her arms around him, and gave him another kiss. Beast Boy could feel his stomach squirming, but he didn't pull away either.
Terra pulled away from Beast Boy. "Goodnight, cutie." She climbed up to the top bunk, lay down, and started snoring right away.
"Yeah, goodnight," Beast Boy muttered before lying down on the bottom bunk. Unlike Terra, he could not fall asleep right away. His mind was frantic, trying to figure out how to sort out the mess he now found himself in.
Instead of sleeping, Robin's head was buzzing about Red X. Although he had promised Starfire he would get some rest and deal with it later, he found that his inability to stop the thoughts in his head made trying to sleep a futile effort. He opened his laptop again and began a search for anything Red X related. He was still sure that Slade's deliberate naming of "Jason" had a meaning, so he decided to look into that further. The best lead he had was Gotham City, because Red X had made his own hints about knowing Robin's past.
Suddenly, Robin had an epiphany. He did a search in the Gotham archives for Jason Todd, a name Robin had some familiarity with. Jason Todd was the one who replaced Robin when he had left Gotham to forge his own path.
To Robin's surprise, he found a flurry of newspaper entries mentioning the second Robin. Even though the media hadn't known Jason's identity, the pictures in each of the articles matched the costume Jason had been using. Apparently, he had gone missing for a long time after a year of training under Batman's tutelage. Batman had eventually found a replacement for Jason, and the whereabouts of the second Robin had remained a complete mystery.
The answer was clear. Whatever had happened to Jason, he had also left Gotham to strike out on his own. Unlike him, though, he'd struck out purely for his own self-interest. Apparently, Jason had figured out where Robin had gone and appropriated the identity he had constructed to attempt to extract information from Slade.
"I'm going to find you, Jason," Robin muttered to himself, "and when I do, I'm going to get some answers."
Now that his curiosity had been satiated, Robin shut off the laptop to see if he could at least steal a couple hours of sleep before addressing the team with his findings. His head was still buzzing when he lay down on his bed, and whatever sleep he got was minimal at best.
At 11:30 AM, Robin awoke and headed immediately for the main ops room. He turned on the intercom that connected to the entire tower. "Titans, report to the main ops room for a debriefing."
A few minutes later, the team started straggling in. Starfire was first to join Robin, and she flew over and gave him a kiss. "Good morning," she said.
"Morning," Robin responded, feeling a bit giddy.
"Did you sleep well?"
"I slept okay."
Starfire knew that this meant Robin had barely slept at all, but she shrugged it off for now.
Next was Cyborg and Jinx, who walked in holding hands.
"Cyborg, you're finally awake," Robin said with a smile.
"Jinx did a great job," Cyborg said, "but it sounds like I missed a lot while I was powered down."
"That's what the debriefing will address," Robin replied. "I'll fill everyone in on my new findings from last night."
Raven flew in next, her hood raised and a blank expression on her face.
"You sleep well, Raven?" Cyborg asked.
"Fine," she said, remaining completely stoic. Robin thought she was almost too stoic, but he chose not to address it in front of the others.
Finally, Beast Boy walked in with Terra draped on his arm. When Beast Boy saw that Raven was in the room, he quickly pulled away. "Morning, dudes and dudettes," he said.
"Terra!" Starfire cried, the first to give her a bone crushing hug. "What are you doing here?"
"My family was angry that I snuck out last night to rescue you guys," she said, "so I came here."
Cyborg, Robin, and Jinx smiled at the unexpected arrival. Raven remained outwardly neutral, but inside she was seething with anxiety and anger. Still, she offered Terra at least a small hug once everyone else had greeted her.
"We're happy to have you," Robin said. "Are we expecting any other surprise arrivals?"
"This should be it," Beast Boy said.
"Okay, everyone take a seat. I have some news to report about Red X and what happened last night."
The Titans sat down on the couches and chairs in the center of the room. Beast Boy and Terra shared a couch, as did Cyborg and Jinx. Starfire and Raven each took a chair, while Robin stood in the center to address the others.
"Cyborg," he said, "since you were powered down, I'll explain briefly what happened after Red X captured us. We woke up in the old Zynothium plant outside of town. Slade was working with Red X to mass produce weapons. For what purpose, it isn't immediately clear. Terra came to rescue us, but was captured as well. Still, she convinced Red X to let her go and help us escape, an action which obviously succeeded. Before we escaped, though, we found Slade, and he deliberately addressed Red X as 'Jason.'"
"'Jason?'" Cyborg asked. "Why would he do that? Unless…"
"Unless it was a deliberate leak for us," Robin said. "When we came back, I did some preliminary research, and I have a strong hypothesis about the identity of Red X."
Starfire had a frown on her face but remained silent. The other Titans were focused on Robin.
"When I left Gotham, Batman took on a new Robin. When that happened, I was able to figure out that his identity was Jason Todd. After about a year, he mysteriously vanished from the streets of Gotham, and he was gone so long that Batman found another replacement and Jason was left for dead. Clearly, whatever happened to him, he was able to get out of Gotham and assume my old alter ego as Red X."
The rest of the Titans were silent as they took some time to mull over the new information.
"So clearly, Jason is out there fighting for himself," Cyborg said. "Do you know what his endgame is? Do you know if he has a plan?"
"I don't know what he wants at the end of the day," Robin said. "The only way I can think of to find that out is to capture him and make him talk."
"That's easier said than done," Jinx said. "If he trained under the same guy that trained you, he's going to be tough to beat."
"With seven of us and one of him," Robin said, "he can't stand against all of us, not unless he's able to use his Zynothium weapons to incapacitate us. Whenever we fight him again, we have to find a way to neutralize his weapons and fight him hand-to-hand."
"How will that be possible?" Starfire asked. "Zynothium is an unstable and powerful material."
"It is," Robin said. "That's why I chose to use it when I created the Red X alter ego. I will admit that I didn't know enough just how powerful it was, but with more research, I should be able to determine the materials we need to neutralize the Zynothium material. If he can't use those powerful weapons, he has no other advantages."
"Which means we can take him down," Cyborg said, placing hand over fist.
"This plan seems feasible," Raven said, "but how do you expect to find him again? Red X is smart, and he knows that staying here at Jump City would not be a wise choice. We have access to monitor the entire city, but he could go anywhere else he wanted."
"There's a reason he stole the Red X identity," Robin replied, "and I think it's personal. If I never left Gotham, he would never have taken up the mantle as Robin, and whatever happened to him when he vanished would also never have happened. I think he has a personal grievance for me, and I think he intends to address that. I need to find out exactly what happened to him, and with that knowledge, I should be able to reason with him."
"How much more research is this going to take?" Starfire asked, her arms crossed and a frown on her face. "If no one in Gotham was able to explain his disappearance, how are you going to do the figuring out of it on your own?"
"I recognize that it's going to take a lot of effort," Robin replied, "but once I have answers, I can use them against him for leverage. He may be a foe of ours, but he's not a psychopath like Slade. I think he would be willing to listen if I could demonstrate what I know about his past."
"Robin, may the two of us talk for a moment alone?" Starfire asked.
The tone of her request made Robin feel uneasy. He looked over the rest of the team and finally cleared his throat. "Sure, Star. The debrief is over."
The Titans rose from their seats, and Starfire led Robin over to the kitchen, out of earshot of the others.
"Robin, I have concerns about the level of research you will need to discover the past of Jason Todd," she said. "We already spoke about this earlier today, and I am worried that you might become obsessed about this."
"I understand what you're saying," Robin replied, placing his hand on her shoulder, "but I have no other leverage on Red X unless I can find out what happened to him."
"Will you at least accept help from the others?" Starfire asked. "Cyborg could easily help you with all of the computer systems he has. We can all be doing the research together, and we could make seven times the progress if all of us are...doing the pitching in."
"But…" Robin said, but before he could protest this request, he realized that he had no real reason to take this on himself. "Look, I am not usually one to ask for help. When I left Gotham City to strike out on my own, I had no intention of joining up with anyone. And in that future you saw where you left us on our own, I responded by striking out on my own. I did fairly well for myself, but I left my friends to suffer. I don't want to keep making that mistake. With that said, I'll accept whatever help you and the rest of the team can offer."
Starfire smiled, and her eyes welled up with tears. She gave Robin a strong hug and kissed him.
"Starfire," Robin muttered while her lips were still on his, "I know you mean well, but can you ease up on the hug? You're crushing me."
"My apologies," Starfire said, looking horrified. "I sometimes forget just how much stronger I am than most of the people on Earth."
"It's okay, no harm done," Robin said.
Suddenly, the two of them heard Raven start to shout. Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, and Jinx all turned towards Raven, who was standing near Beast Boy and Terra.
"I don't believe you two!" Raven yelled, seeming to shout with her normal voice and a lower, deeper voice at the same time. "You just had to choose now to run away from home and right into his arms!"
"Raven, please," Beast Boy said, "I can explain—"
"There's nothing to explain," Raven screamed. "You've made your choice perfectly clear!"
"Raven!" Robin shouted, hoping to grab her attention.
She turned to Robin, and he could see her eyes had been replaced with four angry red ones. He stared her down, holding firm. After a few moments, Raven exhaled, and her eyes turned back to normal. For a brief moment, she seemed unsure of herself, but she took another breath and her composure returned. "I'll be in my room," she muttered, striding towards the exit and refusing to look back.
Realizing that there was a serious problem here that likely needed addressing, Robin marched over to Beast Boy and Terra. "Can you explain what all that was about?" he asked.
"Yeah, I can try to explain," Beast Boy said, looking nervous. "Um...maybe this should just be a conversation between me and Robin."
"No way," Terra said. "Whatever you have to say to him, you can say it in front of me."
"Uh...okay," Beast Boy said, "but do the other three need to be here for this?"
"Don't mind us," Cyborg said. "We're out of here. C'mon Jinx, Star, let's go."
"But I want to know what happened," Jinx said, the frown on her face clearly marking her disappointment. Still, when Cyborg and Starfire headed for the exit, Jinx followed.
Robin turned back to Beast Boy and Terra once the doors were closed. "Can you explain what's happening here?"
"Yeah…" Beast Boy said, taking a deep breath and rubbing his hands together. "Terra, I'm really sorry. This timing is so not good."
"Timing?" Terra asked. "What do you mean?"
"You're gonna hate me when I say this, but...before you and I had our, um...moment at the tower entrance...Raven and I…"
Terra slapped Beast Boy in the face. "Were you ever going to tell me about this?"
"Of course I was! At least, I think I would've…"
Terra raised her hand again, but Robin grabbed her arm. "I think you've made your point," he said to her. Robin let go of her arm, and Terra pulled it away, wrapping her arms around her body and sitting on the ground with her head lowered. Robin then turned to Beast Boy. "I think you realize the mess you've made, right?"
"Yep," Beast Boy said, sighing and turning away from Terra and Robin. "I made this mess, and now I gotta clean it up." He turned back to Terra. "I think the three of us need to talk."
"I have nothing to say to either of you," Terra said, "except I do have a question. Why didn't you just tell me what happened? I would've been disappointed, but at least I would've understood."
"It happened so fast," Beast Boy said. "When you showed up at the door and threw yourself on me, I didn't even have time to react."
"Oh ho," Terra said with a laugh that cut through the air like a dagger, "I did not throw myself at you, and I'm calling BS on your time to react. You had hours afterward to tell me what happened. Instead, I had to hear it from the daughter of Trigon's mouth. Well, you can forget about the two of us now. I'll sleep on the couch here before I ever take your top bunk again." With that, Terra stormed out of the room, leaving Beast Boy and Robin alone.
Beast Boy looked up at Robin with an inquisitive look on his face. "Are you gonna yell at me, too?"
"For what?"
"Damaging team morale or something?"
"No, I think you understand what you did," Robin said. "Terra needs some time to cool off."
"You sure she's not just gonna run away again?"
"She has nowhere else to run. She left her family. We're all she's got now."
"I can't believe this." Beast Boy buried his head in his hands. "I can't believe I could've been this stupid." He started shaking and sounded like he was about to cry. Robin took a seat next to him.
"I have an idea," Robin said, "to see if I can help repair the damage with Raven. I can't guarantee anything, but we do have that mental connection. I can check in on her and see if she's calmed down."
"I guess," Beast Boy said. "It can't make things any worse than they are now."
"Very reassuring," Robin said with a small smile.
Beast Boy let out a chuckle or two. "Thanks, Robin."
"Sure thing." Robin closed his eyes and relaxed, and he was able to focus his attention on Raven's mind. After a moment, the two were connected.
"What are you doing here?" Raven asked. "Did Beast Boy put you up to this?"
"I volunteered," Robin responded. "I wanted to check in and see how you're doing."
"I've been spending the past few minutes trying to meditate," Raven replied, "until you interrupted."
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to intrude."
"Then get out," Raven replied.
Robin could sense a flash of anger building, and it almost seemed to be pushing against him, trying to break their connection. "Look, Raven, I don't want to pretend to know what you're going through. I can tell you this, though. Whatever happened between you and Beast Boy earlier today, and whatever happened with him and Terra afterward, you won't be able to run away from it. Walking away from the conflict, giving yourself time to cool off, that's helpful in the short term. For the sake of the team, though, I really think the three of you need to hash this out at some point. Not right now," he added quickly, because he could sense Raven's anger flaring up again. "You take all the time you need. Once all three of you are calm enough to have a discussion, the rest of the team can give you all the time and space that you need. Can you at least commit to that?"
Raven remained silent for a long time, then finally spoke. "Fine. I am willing to have the discussion only when I feel calm enough to do so, and not a moment sooner."
"Thank you," Robin said. "The rest of us will give you all the time you need. Come back up here only when you're ready."
With that settled, Robin withdrew the connection to Raven's mind and returned to the main ops room. He then turned to Beast Boy.
"Raven is willing to talk later once she's calmed down," Robin said. "Unfortunately, I don't have the same access to Terra's mind, but I think you'll have an easier time convincing her than I will."
"Are you sure? She was really angry when she stormed out of here."
"I'm not sure if you ever noticed this," Robin said, "but behind that rocky exterior she puts up, she has a soft spot for you. I don't completely understand why it is, but just give her a little more time, then call her communicator to check in. Once she's cooled off, I think she'll be willing to listen to you."
"Okay," Beast Boy said. "Hey, you want to turn on the GameStation for a bit? Could use a game or two to take my mind off of...this."
Robin gave Beast Boy a smile. "Absolutely, as long as you're ready to lose."
"Bring it on, Boy Wonder."
The two of them rose from the floor, popped a game into the console, and sat back on the couch, ready to take their minds off their troubles, at least for a little while.
