Alec always preferred the classrooms that had windows. There was something about the natural light that helped him stay awake during three hour lectures. Turning his eyes from the professor, Alec watched the light dance along the wall. The weather outside was far too lovely for him to be cooped up indoors all day listening to teachers. Magnus had wanted him to skip class today, but Alec just couldn't do it. Even if the notes were all online, he couldn't help but wonder how it felt for the teachers when they were lecturing to an almost empty room. Besides, it was almost the summer holidays after all. Not long now and he'd have four glorious months in which to not attend classes.
With a deep sigh of surrender, Alec tore his eyes from the window and back to his notes. Picking up his pen Alec began where he'd left off.
When the class was finally dismissed, Alec packed up his books and left. It was a short walk to the bus stop where Alec waited with his book like he did every Wednesday for the 2:15pm bus. Upon its arrival he got on and stayed until seven stops later where he got off and changed buses. After that it was a short walk and a skip over to the apartment.
With almost an entire year of university under his belt, Alec had to admit he rather liked it. There was just so much more freedom in the structure of University there hadn't been in high school. Teachers treated you like adults instead of children.
Walking through the doors, Alec announced his arrival and got a reply back. Catarina was home. Her practicum must have been cancelled. She was in the nursing program and usually spent her Wednesday afternoons attempting CPR on manikins, or so Alec assumed. He didn't know alot about nursing.
Ditching his books, Alec plunked himself down in front of his computer for some well deserved relaxing. Video games were his method of choice today, but he was interrupted by his phone going off. It was his mother, confirming plans for him and Magnus to fly home for the summer. Alec had to message back saying Magnus could only get so much time off work. She, of course, knew this already, but had still been trying to talk Alec into making his week home trip into a month home trip.
Though Alec would never cave, he loved that his family missed him. Between video chat, phone calls, and text messages, Alec didn't feel like he was missing out on much back home. No, his place was here with his favourite person.
Even if it had been well over a year ago, Alec remembered only too well how very very long those last few months of high school had felt, as he waited to graduate and join Magnus in Vancouver. He knew he could go home for the summer on his own, but being long distance for that long didn't sit right with him. He was better off hanging out over the school break and looking for temp work.
Besides, he had friends here. After moving to Vancouver Alec had made a point to keep in touch with Clary and Jace. The four of them got together for a double date every few months and even occasionally saw each other on campus.
Simon had stayed in Alec's hometown though he knew Simon still kept in close contact with his best friend Clary. Alec wasn't totally sure what he was up to these days, but he felt confident that if anything major happened he'd hear about it.
Alec looked at the clock and smiled. It was ten after five. Not long now. Closing down his game, Alec went to do an inventory on the fridge. What did he feel like making for dinner tonight?
Alec had barely started cooking when he heard the front door. Stopping what he was doing, Alec went to greet the new arrival.
"Hello darling," Magnus said with a smile.
Alec leaned up to kiss Magnus gently before replying. "How was work?"
"Good," Magnus said, setting down his keys on the bowl by the door. "I think I'm really making headway with my boss."
"That's great," Alec smiled at him.
"How was your day?" Magnus asked back.
"Oh the usual," Alec answered. "Trying to stay awake in class, and reading on the bus. Oh and mom still wants us to come stay for the whole summer."
"And you told you again that employment involves working all year round unlike university?" Magnus chuckled.
"I did indeed," Alec said, smiling back.
"So what's for dinner?" Magnus asked, moving father into the apartment. "Is Caterina home yet?"
"Yeah. She's just in her room," Alec replied. "Been home a while. And I was thinking maybe sandwiches. I wanna try out that panini press you got me for my birthday."
"Sounds perfect," Magnus replied.
After another peck on the lips, Alec moved away to start dinner.
Today hadn't been a particularly special day in the life of Alexander Lightwood. It had, in fact, been the most ordinary of days and yet everyday he spent with the man he loved was anything but ordinary to him.
Alec could see many more ordinary days spread out before him. He wondered how long it would be after he graduated before they'd get married. He thought about how long it would take after that for his mother to start nagging him about grandchildren. He could picture perfectly the years that followed, as time took his agility and health from him. Alec could see it all so clearly as long as Magnus was at his side.
Only a short epilogue for you. This is more of a childhood to adult story so I always planned to end it here. I had considered just leaving the last chapter as the end but since I did promise an epilogue I compromised by writing a short one. :) DFTBA
