I had plans for this chapter… and they did not include a flashback! XD Oops haha I enjoy writing the third years interacting so much and couldn't neglect sharing the scene I saw in my head with you guys! Hopefully it brings you some entertainment, thank you so much for continuing to follow this story, I am so thankful for each of you, stay healthy!
"What the hell, that guy is a total piece of trash! He deserves more than losing his memory, throw his ass to the baslekiss, Harry!"
Putting a finger to his lips, Asahi shushed Noya for probably the twentieth time. "Shh, you're going to wake Daichi and Suga… Do you mean basilisk?"
Frustrated, Noya crossed his arms and settled his agitated stare on the movie playing, and scowled. "Yeah, however you say it. They should let that talking snake bite Lockhart's head off, it's not like he's good for anything."
Asahi gave a reluctant smile, the liberos' simple logic never ceased to surprise him.
"Yeah," Tanaka interjected, "But if they do that everyone else is just gonna say it's their fault or something, right? They'd be better off dragging him to Dumbledor and making him fess up."
"Yeah, I guess." Noya muttered, clearly unsatisfied.
After Suga had fallen asleep, Daichi suggested they watch a movie while they wait for someone else to get home. They'd all agreed, but then found the Sugawara's had an extreme lack of DVDs. Remembering the small collection his friend kept in his room, Daichi sent Asahi upstairs to Suga's desk to fetch something they could all watch. He was intrigued to see Suga's tastes were of the sci-fi variety, the small compilation consisting of Star Wars, The Matrix, and a few conspiracy theory documentaries. The ace doubted the second years would be able to get into such convoluted plots, so he was relieved to find the Harry Potter series at the bottom of the stack. Now that he thought back on it, he did recall the setter's fixation on Hogwarts houses a few weeks prior, making both him and Daichi take online quizzes to see where they fit in.
"Come on, aren't you guys curious at all? We did it as an exercise in Moral Studies and it got me thinking. I want to see what you two get."
"Hmm." Daichi blinked as he chewed and scrolled through his texts to click on the link Suga had sent him. The three were eating lunch together on the roof of the school. They were sitting in a loose circle with their bento boxes in the middle. "I find it hard to believe Nakagawa Sensei would spend class time researching Harry Potter houses. Whose idea was it really?"
Rolling his eyes, Suga sighed with impatience and crossed his arms. "Okay, it wasn't during class so much as it was a conversation during free period."
"Aha."
"Shut up and take the quiz."
Daichi chuckled. "I am I am, calm down. What am I supposed to click on, this?"
Scooting closer to see his screen, Suga nodded. "Yeah, you have to answer thirty questions."
"Thirty? Isn't that kind of excessive?" Asahi complained, cleaning his face with a napkin before balling it up and tossing it in his empty bento.
"They aren't difficult. Come on, you do it too. It can tell you a lot about your character, it's fun."
"Fun…" Asahi muttered, picking his phone up from beside him and navigating to the text from Suga. "Did you take it already?"
"Of course."
"What did you get?"
Puffing his chest out and flashing a toothy grin, Sugawara jabbed a thumb at his chest. "I'm a Slytherin."
Dumbfounded by this revelation, Daichi and Asahi both looked up from their phones.
"A Slytherin? Aren't those like- Th- the bad guys?!"
Suga's pride soured, and he screwed his face up with annoyance.
"Sheesh, that's a stereotype, not every Slytherin was like Malfoy, you know."
Going back to answering questions, Daichi read over the next one and spoke distractedly. "I wouldn't normally agree with Asahi,"
"Thanks." He deadpanned.
"But he's kind of got a point. You don't hear a whole lot of good when it comes to Slytherin."
"That's because of Voldemort." Suga huffed, his nostrils flared with agitation. "There were tons of other people who weren't psychopathic serial killers. Harry was almost in that house in case you forgot, not to mention the traits of a Slytherin are being strong leaders, ambitious, and cunning. Evil isn't listed anywhere in there."
Humming to himself, Asahi scrolled through the site Suga's link sent him to. "It says here… 'Slytherins have a strong sense of self-preservation… Are clever and… Possess a certain disregard for the rules."
"I can see that last part," Daichi muttered, thinking of Suga encouraging the underclassmen when they did reckless things, typically things that led to him apologizing to someone.
Glaring, the setter folded his arms over his chest again. "Is that the only similarity you see?"
Rubbing at his chin as he continued to stare at his phone, Daichi idly shook his head. "No, you're clever. If by self-preservation it means you don't rush into things and you think them through, I'd say that's a good fit for you too."
"Yeah," Asahi agreed, still reading through the passage he found. "This says they're confident in their competence and are very loyal. Everyone can count on you, Suga, maybe it's a good fit after all."
Fair skin tinting the lightest shade of pink, Suga dropped his arms from their crossed position and scratched at the bridge of his nose and he smiled. "Oh yeah? Anything else you want to add?"
"Now you're just fishing for compliments."
Suga snickered at Daichi's accusation. "Who, me? I don't know what you're talking about."
"Sure, you don't. Alright, I'm finished, let's see what I got…"
Suga leaned over to peek at his results as the page loaded and soon enough the picture of a gold and scarlet lion popped up.
"Guess I'm a Gryffindor."
Suga Laughed. "No surprises there."
Daichi lowered his brow and fixed him with a stare. "And what's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, come on, Daichi, you're a textbook Gryffindor. Stubborn, brave, hardworking, proud. You're practically a mirror image of Professor McGonagall, you even sound like her when you get mad."
"I do not!" Daichi barked, Suga grinning as he laughed behind his hand.
"Whatever you say..."
"I don't."
"Daring, nerve, and chivalry are all traits of Gryffindor, it also says they can be short-tempered…" Asahi offered, and Daichi took his turn crossing his arms in annoyance.
"You couldn't just leave it at the good traits, could you?"
"I'm just reading what it says, I'm not the one who wrote it!"
"You take it now, let's see what you get," Suga said, hooking an arm around the larger teen's neck and pulling him down to his level. Asahi struggled against the chokehold and grunted as he tried to navigate the website.
"You guys are gonna make fun of me no matter what it is," he grumbled but managed to do as Suga demanded and clicked on the quiz.
Daichi shrugged, unashamed. "It's not our fault you're the world's biggest wuss."
The ace didn't bother to respond as he frowned and began to go through question after question. Favorite hobby, idea of fun, how would you fight a dragon, the list went on until he got to number 30 and clicked 'finish'. "Done…"
"What's it say?" Suga demanded, snatching Asahi's phone out of his hand, and viewing the results before even he could. "Hey!"
The setter jumped to his feet, a smirk on his face as he squinted and scrutinized the phone screen.
"Look at that, it says you're a squib! I guess you're just a boring normal guy who can't do magic."
Scrambling to his feet, Asahi balled his fists up and scowled at Suga. "No, it doesn't, that's not even an option for that quiz! Quit antagonizing me!"
"Your lameness must have broken it then," Suga suggested, sticking his tongue out and holding the phone away as Asahi grabbed his free arm and tried to snatch it back.
Just as he used his superior size to reach Suga's other wrist, he flung the phone in the other direction. "Daichi, catch!"
Playing along, the captain plucked it out of the air and turned the screen toward him to check the results. Rubbing his chin, he nodded and grinned. "Sorry, Asahi, it looks like he was telling the truth. You really are a squib."
Growling under his breath, Asahi released Suga and turned away from them both. "Fine, I don't even care what stupid house I'm in, keep it to yourselves for all I care." Folding his arms over his chest, he closed his eyes and ignored them both.
"Aww, don't be like that, we're just teasing." Suga laughed, giving his friend a jovial pat on the back.
"Yeah, well I don't think it's funny. It was your idea to take the quiz, what do I care if I don't find out what I am?"
Behind them, Daichi was scrolling through the results on Asahi's phone, his expression smug as he eyed the pouting ace.
"Oh… Would you look at that?"
While Asahi remained stubbornly facing away, Suga abandoned his efforts to cheer him up and walked over to Daichi. They shared a smile between themselves, and then went back to reading the results. This time it was Suga who commented.
"Oh wow, that is a lot like him… Mmhm, that too, this is pretty impressive."
As they predicted, Asahi's ear twitched with interest, and his tough façade wavered. Eyes opening slightly, he turned his body to face them a little bit more.
"You know I never really thought about it, but I suppose this is pretty accurate."
"Not to mention this part… Yeah, this is pretty cool."
It wasn't long before Asahi caved. His shoulders drooped and slowly his posture relaxed. He turned toward them completely, his expression reluctant. "…What… What is?"
"Oh?" Daichi said, his smirk far too pleased. "You wanna know?"
Fiddling with the hem of his shirt, Asahi avoided eye contact but nodded.
"Okay, since you're so interested… It says-"
"You're a squib." Suga supplied, breaking into a fit of laughter with Daichi as Asahi huffed and stormed over to their bento boxes. Slapping the lid on his, he gathered up his things and began to head to the rooftop door.
"I knew you guys were going to mess with me, I'm going back inside!"
"No, no, I was kidding Asahi! Come on, don't be mad, we'll tell you for real this time."
He ran to stand in the ace's way, and Daichi jogged to catch up.
Asahi glowered at them, wholly unconvinced. "Yeah, right."
"We will, we will." Suga chortled. "See? You're a Hufflepuff."
He nudged Daichi with his elbow and proved Suga's words true by turning the phone around to show Asahi. Sure enough, a yellow and black coat of arms was depicted, a badger in the middle.
Unable to help himself, Asahi paused and let his eyes zero in on the results of his quiz. His brows drew together, and his frown grew worried.
"Hufflepuff… Isn't that the house everyone makes fun of?"
Suga and Daichi looked at each other and shrugged.
"Does it really matter? Did you read the traits for Hufflepuff?" Suga asked, his laughter melting away and his head tilting to the side as he placed a hand on his hip.
"Uh- No…" Asahi admitted.
Turning the phone back around, Daichi began to read through the passage. "There's a lot of good stuff here, like patient, dedication, modesty… It says Hufflepuff is the most inclusive house."
"So… They accept anyone. Wouldn't that make me not special?" His shoulders sagged.
Letting out a sigh, Suga put his hands on his hips and stood his ground before the larger teen.
"You're going to make me spell it out, aren't you? Hufflepuffs are not only inclusive because they'll let everyone join, but it's also because of their acceptance of others and their ability to get along with just about anyone."
Asahi blinked owlishly, his mouth forming a small O. Suga continued.
"People sorted into that house are typically friendly, honest, and impartial. That being said… Their mascot is a badger for a reason. They're known to treat others as their equals and seen as mostly harmless, but when the things they care about are threatened… They can be downright vicious."
A grin made its way to Daichi's face, and his eyes focused on Asahi. He no longer looked disappointed with where he'd been sorted but awed. "Sounds a little familiar, don't you think, Ace?"
So, even if the two constantly tormented him, they always managed to somehow build him up too. While Suga drove Asahi crazy with his antics and Daichi's words weren't often sugar-coated, they were important to him and he'd do what he could to be a good friend. Because of this, Asahi didn't mind being the one to fetch the DVDs, it was the least he could do. Suga desperately needed some rest while Daichi was incapacitated, his lap currently being used as a pillow. He supposed, he was a Hufflepuff after all.
When he came back down with the movies, Daichi gave him a soft smile and nodded his head. Somehow, Noya had never seen any of the series and Tanaka had only seen the first. It was a good choice to capture their interest, but the flood of questions that poured from their mouths was never-ending. Daichi and he took turns answering what they could until the captain lost his patience, and told them 'Just shut up and watch, would you?" The demand didn't cease the inquiries, but Daichi did fall asleep about ten minutes later.
For the first half of the movie, he'd periodically removed the cloth from Suga's head to refresh in the bowl of water, but then his head began to nod. When Asahi grew suspicious of the absence of threats made to Tanaka and Noya, he turned around to find Daichi's arm resting on Suga while the other propped his head up. His cheek was squished beneath his palm and he snored lightly, his mouth slightly ajar.
Asahi couldn't blame him for falling asleep, they'd gotten home ridiculously late and that was after spending the entire day playing volleyball or stressing over their injured friend. He'd been able to get a nap while Tanaka and Daichi went to pick Suga up from the hospital, but the captain had to be running on empty if the bags beneath his eyes were any indication.
He allowed them to sleep through the first film, and when that ended, he put in the next one. Although Tanaka and Noya were possibly the worst duo to keep quiet on the team, aside from Kageyama and Hinata that is, Daichi and Suga managed to sleep through it all. As the movie progressed, Daichi's head migrated from his hand to his shoulder, a thin stream of drool leaving a damp spot on his jacket. He lay slumped on the couch with Suga who had rolled slightly and was sprawled across him even more. His bandage hand was cradled to his chest as Daichi's left arm draped across his collar. The captain's other hand was plopped atop Suga's head, his fingers disappearing in light grey locks.
The sight was rather amusing, but Asahi valued the little peace he had, far too much to risk it by taking a photo. It might seem funny at the moment, but they already harassed him without cause. He didn't want to know what they'd do if he entertained the idea of blackmailing them. Having made his decision, Asahi went back to answering questions and reminding the other two to keep their voices down. They'd made it to the end of the film, and that was when the front door creaked open.
He didn't notice at first, but he turned around immediately at the sound of Suga's voice- Well it was similar but lower with a touch more rasp to it.
"Having a party without me? Or wait, is this a slumber party?" Yuuto asked, his eyes first drawing to Asahi, and then panning over to Suga and Daichi asleep on the couch. He held a paper bag placed inside one that was plastic and wore an amused smile.
"Uh- Uh, hello." Asahi stuttered.
"What's up, you're Suga's big bro, right?" Noya asked, his grin wide as he looked up from his place on the floor.
He laughed in return and nodded. "Call me Yuuto, nice to meet you." He said although it appeared he was distracted as he dug his phone out of his back pocket and pointed it at the two still snoozing on the couch. Crouching down, he got a couple of different angles, and then turned around and raised a finger to his lips.
"We'll keep that between the three of us, okay?" He gave a wink and his eyes glittered with mischief that reminded Asahi strongly of their vice-captain.
Tanaka smirked but folded his arms over his chest. "Sure, pal, you couldn't get me involved if you were paying. The boss will make me do flying laps till I puke; I want nothin to do with that."
"Yeah, you don't want to get on Daichi-san's bad side," Noya warned.
Yuuto's eyes narrowed, but the pleasant smile never left his face. "Who, this teddy bear? I've got a bone to pick with him and my baby brother, don't you worry about me." He chuckled.
"What's in the bag?" Tanaka asked, eyeing it up as Yuuto returned his phone to his pocket.
"Oh, I picked up Koushi's prescriptions on my way home. Pain meds and some antibiotics. I suppose I should wait until he wakes up though, huh?"
Scratching the back of his head, Asahi got to his feet. "Um, it might be a while. He couldn't sleep and was up all night at the hospital."
The impish smile Yuuto wore morphed into something more sincere, and he let out a soft sigh. "I suppose it can't be helped, I'll let him sleep."
Setting the bag down on the coffee table, he rubbed a hand over his chin, his fingers brushing over the beauty mark there. "Our parents would prefer if he rested in his bedroom, I'll take him upstairs to bed. Azamane, care to give me a hand?"
Asahi nodded, willing to help in any way he could. "What would you like me to do?"
"He's always sleeping like he's in a coma, so I'll just carry him. I need you to open the door and help me get him into bed."
Asahi nodded his agreeance and moved toward the staircase as the elder brother removed the cloth from Suga's head, then bent over the sleeping friends. He began with moving the hand that lay across his collarbone, then moved Daichi's other hand that was buried in Suga's hair. After disentangling the two, Yuuto slipped an arm beneath Suga's knees, and one behind his back.
"Uh, here we go…" Yuuto grunted, hefting Suga into his arms and allowing his head to roll onto his shoulder. Just as he said, his brother grimaced and groaned softly, but remained asleep. Daichi on the other hand blinked furiously as the weight of his friend went missing. He looked around with bloodshot eyes that were filled with disorientation and raised a hand to rub at them.
"W-What's happening?" He mumbled, pushing himself up on the couch and groaning as he tried to get his bearings.
"Easy, Sawamura. I'm just taking your boyfriend to bed." Yuuto chuckled, heading toward the stairs with Suga and leaving the second years to catch their captain up to speed.
His brows scrunched together, and he ran a hand over his face. "Mmm… Boyfriend?"
Asahi didn't have time to stick around and explain things as Yuuto followed him up the steps. He led the way to Suga's room and pushed the door open so they could head inside.
"Could you pull the blankets back?"
"Uh- Sure." Asahi said, quickly doing as he was asked and drawing back the powder blue comforter. He stepped off to the side as Suga was lowered onto his mattress, then watched as Yuuto gently adjusted the pillow beneath his head. Asahi couldn't help but notice the tenderness of his gestures as he made sure his little brother was comfortable before tugging the covers up to his chin.
Turning to the blinds that hung over the window, he drew them closed and gave Suga one last look before brushing his damp bangs from his forehead. His words were soft as he spoke, almost as if he were talking to himself. "Get some sleep, Koushi."
Without needing to be told, Asahi exited the room and met Yuuto in the hall where he pulled the door shut. Suga's parents may not always be fair in how they treated him, but it eased the ace's mind to know at least one family member was looking out for him.
When they arrived in the living room once more, Daichi was functioning a little better. Taking in a big yawn, he scratched his chest and looked up at Yuuto unamused. "He's not my boyfriend." He said, voice thick with sleep.
He laughed in response. "Could have fooled me." He said, then folded his arms. "Did the doctor send paperwork home with him?"
The question chased even more of the sleepiness from the captain and nodded his head to the small stack on the table. "Yeah, he got a fever overnight but otherwise everything is the same as last night. Everything she went over is in there and they said you could call if you have any questions."
Yuuto nodded, then patted Daichi on the shoulder. "Thanks for making sure he got home safe, I appreciate it. You didn't have to stick around after dropping him off, but from the looks of it, I think he was grateful. He's got great teammates, Koushi's lucky to have you."
"Suga's saved our asses more times than I can count," Tanaka said, crossing his arms and nodding his head in earnest. "We'd be screwed without him."
"Yeah, Suga's a good guy." Noya agreed, jumping to his feet so they could get ready to leave.
As the group crowded around to put their shoes back on, Yuuto opened the front door and smiled. "Either way, I'm thankful he's got friends keeping an eye on him. Careful on your way home, it's starting to snow again."
"We will," Daichi promised, stepping out onto the porch with the others and looking back at Yuuto from over his shoulder as he let out another yawn. "When he wakes up, tell him to text me so I know he's alive. He's got my number if you need anything."
"Sure, sure, go home and get some rest."
With that, they waved their goodbyes and began the chilly walk home. When they were a good distance from the Sugawara residence, Noya folded his arms behind his head and took the lead.
"You know, Suga's parents kinda suck, but his brother seems pretty cool. What do you think, Daichi?"
Preoccupied with his thoughts, Asahi noticed Daichi seemed troubled as he nodded.
"I agree, he treats Suga completely different than they do…"
Curious, Asahi furrowed his brow and tilted his head. "Is something wrong?"
Daichi let out a sigh but shook his head.
"Not exactly. I'm hoping his parents pay attention to him while he's in such bad shape. It makes me kind of worried."
Recalling the Sugawara's reaction, the night prior, Asahi could feel worry forming a knot in his stomach as he nodded in agreeance. "I hope so too."
