Once again, sorry for the delay. Also, sorry if there's some error in the story, as this was my first dip back to writing fic.

CHAPTER II
"Battle Wounds"

The sun rises from the horizon, indicating that Christmas is already over. The jolly and merry of the night evaporates alongside the early morning dew. Soldiers—already donning in their armors and spears—line up to their respective vehicles to return to their reality, to their fight.

Just like that, the soldiers disappear before the sun even show her full grace to the area. Their destination is Ardennes, and their goal is to continue their fight against the German army—who is already getting the upper hand from creating a bulge in the Allies' territory.

Hange was not able to see the soldiers off, so she can only send her prayers for their survival. Ever since then, the radio inside the tent is never turned off, as that is the only way to stay updated about the condition of the battlefield. Fortunately, despite being on European soil, there is still English-language radio that they can listen to.

As days pass by, Hange learns that the Allies had joined their forces together, combining air and land attacks against the German. A strategy that is proven to be successful as they are able to slowly push the German back to their starting point.

However, this also means that the field hospital has to move accordingly as it is mandated for the field hospital to stay thirty miles behind the battlefront. So, as the Allies move forward, the medical staff finds themselves in need of fast mobilization.

Moreover, as winning as the Allies might be, soldiers are still getting hurt and injured. Hange witnessed first-hand how the numbers of patients keep rising each day. Therefore, the medical staff is facing a hard time balancing between following the army movement and treating the injured soldiers.

During those busy times, Hange spends most of her time either standing up, walking, running, carrying supplies, or bending down to treat the patients. Even though it is still in the middle of winter, summer comes early for her as she feels her whole body burning up from all the heat that builds up from within her. Furthermore, if her legs have a mouth, they would be screaming at her.

Nonetheless, she quickly realizes that her pain is nothing compared to the agony of the soldiers. Hange has to compel herself to not cry in front of her patients; she has to be strong as no one wants to be tended by a crying nurse. Thus, she learns to swallow her sorrow, and instead to put a smile on her face.

Nevertheless, she can not deny the fact Hange Zoë is inherently a different entity from Miss Nurse.

Miss Nurse is the one who knows that the only thing that she needs to focus on now is the survival of her patients. There is no room for personal feelings or opinions because it can hinder her from her job. She is trained to treat all of her patients the same, after all.

Meanwhile, Hange Zoë is the one who cries near the wood during her break. She is also the one who keeps glancing around the tent, searching for a certain soldier while also praying that that he is safe from all the bad things of the war. The last thing she wants to see is his unconscious body coming to the tent. And yet, there's a side of her that is already missing his presence.

That is why a wide array of feelings explode within her when she sees him being carried unconsciously on the stretcher in the early new year's morning. A pang of pain fills her heart as she watches him trembling and drenches in a bucket of sweat. He is as pale as ghost and there is no trance of life nor light in his grey eyes. Carefully, they lay him on the bed. Hange observes the red and dirty bandage on his thigh before moving to touch his forehead

It is scorching hot.

As the other nurse inspects his wound, Hange tries to help by drying his face with a soft towel. But then, Hange hears that he is murmuring something in his sleep. His face scrunched up in pain and misery, while his hand is moving to reach something in the ceiling.

"…Mom." He calls before groaning in pain as he stares at the roof.

Oh no!

"Hey, hey…" Hange immediately takes his hand and whispers to him, "It's okay, it's okay. I'm here. You are okay, you are okay."

He seems to notice her, or at least recognize her voice because his face is slowly loosening up into a slightly relaxed trance. But Hange can still feel the prevalent terror from the way he grips tightly her hand. Therefore, following her instinct, she puts her other hand on his wet and dirty hair.

"It's okay, you are okay, Levi. You can get through this..." Her hand moves in slow motion on his hair and softly mutters. "You promised me, right?"

She repeats her words in hope that they will turn into a mantra. She is a healer, not a magician nor wizard; she knows that. But just for this time, she wishes that she can reach him with her words.

Gradually, his ragged breathing starting to soothe down. His previously tense body is slowly relaxing into a much more stable condition. He finally closes his eyes to rest. Hange let out a sigh of relief as she knows that he is calming down from his supposed fever hallucination. But she quickly picks herself up to the action as there is still a fever and a wound that she needs to treat.

Hange leaves his side and moves over to join the other nurses who are tending his wound. She quickly notices that underneath the bandage, there is a red and swollen hollow wound on his thigh. They suspect that it is a harmless bullet wound that got infected due to a poor first-aid, which also explains his high fever and fever hallucination.

The senior nurse—who turns out had been calling her name for a while, but Hange didn't notice until the third call—commands her to grab some antibiotics for him. Hange nods hesitantly as she doesn't really want to leave his side. She takes one last look over to his unconscious body before leaving the tent to follow her instruction.

"Hange!"

Hange's whole body startles at the sudden and loud mention of her name inside the field kitchen tent.

That afternoon, she spends some alone at one of the tables in the field kitchen tent. In front of her, there is a half-empty canned beef soup, an unopened small package of biscuit, and a glass of warm tea.

Well, she is not alone per se. Other than her, three other soldiers sit at another table, and all of them look over to the entrance, searching for the source of the mysterious voice.

"Nanaba?" Hange raises her voice as she notices the familiar blonde nurse standing in front of the entrance. Her heart is thumping against her chest as hundred of questions roaming inside her head. "Did something happen—"

Hange is about to stand up but Nanaba interrupts Hange with a sheepish laugh, "Oh, sorry, that came out louder than I thought it would." Nanaba then glances at the group soldiers and says, "There's no emergency, trust me. I'm sorry for making you all worried."

The soldiers nod at her before continuing their lunch. Nanaba then sits in front of Hange and opens the biscuit package. Hange furrows her eyebrows as she watches Nanaba.

"So… is it really nothing?" Hange asks, grabbing her tea and sips it.

"Oh, not really—" Nanaba said as she scoops Hange's beef soup with a piece of biscuit before eating it. "—I just want to tell you that he has woken up this morning."

Hange coughs, almost spitting her tea out.

It has been two days since he arrived at the field hospital and looking back at his critical condition when he arrived, they were afraid that they would lose him. So, the news is very much welcomed if it's true.

After calming herself from her bouts of coughs, she immediately stares at Nanaba with wide eyes and mouth. "Really? He… as in he?"

Nanaba nods as she takes another biscuit from the package, "Yeah, he. Who else?"

Hange prides herself as a just and fair nurse, but then again she may or may not spare some extra seconds to pay extra attention to him. However, that morning, she and two other nurses were tasked to go to a nearby hospital building to grab some medical supplies since the usual cargo for the field hospital got delayed.

On one hand, she feels a little bit disappointed that she can't be there when he woke up. However, she could care less about that because of such good news, "Oh, that's good to hear! I was worried he might not make it."

"Yes, I know. That's why you should check on him, Hange."

Hange raises her eyebrows, "What? Why should I? You know that I'm off duty until the next shift, right? Also, there are other nurses nearby. Not to mention that I'm probably the last person he wants to see. Therefore, I have no urgency to see him, and vice versa..." She pauses and looks away, "…I mean, I can go check on him, but not now."

Nanaba—who is now taking over Hange's beef soup—chuckles at her remark. "Hange, I'm sure that you are exactly the first person that he wants to see—" Nanaba quickly raises her hand to stop Hange from interrupting her, "Listen, the other nurses said that he looked so intimidating and mean when they were treating him. However, he looked alright when I came to visit. So, I think he might be uncomfortable being treated by, how to say it, strangers?"

"Huh?" Hange let out a soft hum as the gears on her brain starts moving. "What you are saying is that… I— we are not strangers to him?"

"Yeah," Nanaba said, munching on another biscuit. "Well, you are the least strangers to him. I mean, you spent a few hours on Christmas together, right? I believe that you two had bonded over with the help of Christmas magic."

"Nana!" Hange scolds her with a pout.

"Well, don't you want to see him?" Nanaba adds, shifting her tone to a more serious one while still keeping her playful grin intact.

Hange clicks her mouth and frowns, but she can't hold it for too long. Instead of frowning at her, she ends up smiling at Nanaba, "You are the worst."

"I know." Nanaba quickly replies with a proud smile.

As Hange and Nanaba walk away from the kitchen tent, they bump into a familiar face.

"Daniel?" Nanaba calls the young man with a brown-green army uniform.

The young man stops on his track and glances at them. His face immediately brightens up as he approaches closer to the two nurses. "Miss Nanaba! Miss Hange! It feels like ages since the last time I met you two."

Nanaba laughs, "Yeah, Christmas was only last week or so, but it already feels like months ago."

"Indeed." He replies with a wide smile, "I hope you two are doing okay."

"We are, Dani," Hange reassures before shooting him a worried look. "How about you? What are you doing here? Are you hurt?"

"Oh, nothing much. I'm just doing some odd jobs, playing the role of a messenger or some sort. They are probably just trying to get rid of the youngins from the battle. I don't mind, though." He says in such a nonchalant manner before it was quickly replaced by a look of horror. "Anyway, when I got here, I was hoping I can meet you two here. But instead, from all of the people that I can meet here, I met him… I still get goosebumps from his stare…"

"Him?" Nanaba repeats in confusion before cackling, "Oh, you mean Mr. Ackerman?"

He quickly nods. "Yeah…"

"Oh, Dani," Hange chuckles, "Be easy on him, he almost died."

"Yeah, I heard about it. I mean, I know how painful it must be to get shot on one of your limbs." He rubbed his right arm. "Nevertheless, he's still scary in any way and form. I should have known to not mess with Captain Ackerman…" He quickly shoots Hange a reassuring look. "No offense though, Miss Hange."

Hange narrows her eyes, "Huh? Why would I?"

He mirrors her expression with even more confusion. "What? I thought you two are like in a relationship?"

Hange opens her mouth agape as she stares at him in disbelief; she is about to reply but it was cut by the voice of another soldier who calls Daniel. Hange silently thanks the soldier, as she doesn't like the prospect of explaining this misunderstanding to him, specifically when she feels a heat slowly crawling into her cheek.

Daniel shouts out a quick reply before turning his attention back to them. "Duty calls, I guess." Daniel jokingly said before looking at the surroundings and rubbing his nape. "So, uh, before that… I have some odd requests for both of you…"

Hange and Nanaba shares a look.

"I—Would you two mind… to… you know, to hug me?"

"Hug?" Nanaba repeats, tilting her head at him. A gesture that is mimicked by Hange.

"Yeah, for… Uhm, for good luck?" He states, but it sounds more like a question to them. "I MEAN, it's okay if you two didn't want to."

Hange and Nanaba stare at him for a few seconds before erupting into laughter. They both nod at him, which he seems to appreciate greatly. He then awkwardly opens his hands at them and enveloping the two nurses into a group hug.

After a while, to their dismay, they have to end their hug session. Daniel, now looking even more radiant than before, flashes them a smile. "Please don't take this in the wrong context, but every time I see you two, it was like I saw my mother split into two. So, I'm really glad I met you two here."

Hange and Nanaba widen their eyes at his comment, but then it quickly changes into happiness.

"Well, we're honored." Hange rubs his shoulder and says, "Good luck out there, Dani."

"We'll see you soon, Dani!" Nanaba adds, ruffling his hair.

He chortles then exclaims, "Goodbye!"

Hange and Nanaba part away as Nanaba excuses herself to rest for a minute in her tent. Thus, leaving Hange on her own to visit the medical tent.

She feels chills when her body started to vibrate with adrenaline as she comes nearer to the tent. Moreover, the unnecessary comment from Daniel makes her heart beating against her chest like crazy. She shakes up her head and takes a deep breath before stepping into the tent.

Truth to be told, even though days had passed since Christmas. Hange still finds herself grunting and grimacing to herself when she remembers the time where she told him that she'll wait for him.

Wait for him?

Wait for him?

Who does she think she is? They know nothing about each other. Moreover, their relationship is built over the professional relationship between a medical practitioner and a patient. To have other thoughts about him is very much a violation of ethics.

Also, he was probably irked and annoyed by her words back then. She probably ruined his day, his birthday. Nanaba was certainly lying, there's no way he wants to see him. Likewise, it's not like she wants to see him either too.

However, it's too late to back down as she's already inside the tent which is full of patients and nurses. However, it's much relaxed in the atmosphere than the hectic days before.

She discreetly—and courageously—glances at one particular bed on the tent. There he is, sitting against the steel headboard as he converses with another patient. He seems to be listening and nodding along to whatever story the other patient telling him. The other patient is also showing him a small photo.

Hange smiles at the sight which do wonder to her as she starts to calm herself down. After regaining her composure, she then slowly approaches them. "Mr. John," she greets the other patient, "You seem on fire today."

Mr. John beams with joy when he notices her, "Ah! Miss Nurse! I wake up feeling like I can kick those enemies away."

"Well, knowing your condition. I'm sure you can return to the battle in less than a week, Mr. John."

"Really?! I'm glad…" He exclaims in similar joy as before, but then his tone shifts down as he continues, "I was scared that I will remain useless, tied in this bed, unable to join other soldiers. What an embarrassment, right? Finally, I can prove myself to be useful—"

"Wrong." Levi suddenly cuts in. "You are pretty much dead if you choose to fight with your weak and sick body. What's use you might bring in the battlefield? Trust me, by being here, you are helping your comrades and yourself."

Hange is not sure whether it's because of Levi's tone or words, but from the way Mr. John's eyebrows are arched, Hange knows that he is confused and, dare she says, a little bit hurt.

"Oh!" Hange quickly intervene. "I think what Mr. Ackerman meant is to focus on your own recovery is also one of the greatest services you can do for this war, sir. Like, imagine if you forced yourself to fight while disregarding your health, you might end up hurting yourself and worried your comrades. You must know Mr. John, that you are—and will always be—useful. No matter when you are directly fighting the enemies on the battlefield or when you are fighting the sickness in the hospital. That's why you don't have to rush on your recovery. You have to make sure you are on your top condition when you finally re-join your comrades," Hange glances toward Levi and asks, "Isn't that right, Cap?"

Levi stares at her deeply with great disbelief, as if she was just speaking in a foreign language. After a few seconds, he finally replies "… Yeah. That's right."

A smile appears on his face, "Ah, you are right," Mr. John replies with a sigh before throwing a warm gaze toward Levi, "Thank you, Captain, I really need to hear that."

"Don't mind it." Comes his short reply.

Hange watches their exchanges in awe before approaches Levi, standing closer near him. "Mr. Soldier, that's some nice talk you have there." She says with a smile before lowering her volume and adding a tint of playfulness in her, "However, you might want to work with your sentence structure and choice of words."

He rolls his eyes and grunts, "Hmm, Thanks"

"Happy to help." She chuckles before finally asking, "So, how are you feeling?"

"I feel like shit."

"No doubt, we almost lost you. However, you don't have to worry, we'll nurse you back to health as best as we can. You'll be able to finally stand on your legs in no time."

"I agree to that." Mr. John interrupts, "Miss Nurse right here is the best nurse ever, Captain. Be careful, you might end up falling in love with her."

"Wha—Mr. John!" Hange exclaims to the older man while also trying to ignore a warm blush that slowly creeps on her cheeks.

However, to her surprise, Levi doesn't seem bothered by his comment. Instead, he let out a huff of breath that sounds like a chuckle before saying, "We'll see."

Hange plays with her apron in her attempt to swallows a smile from appearing on her face. After succeeding, she then looks at him with determination as she accepts his challenge, "Well, you may or may not end up falling for me, but one thing for sure, I will make sure you have the best treatment ever, Mr. Soldier."

"Sure, suit yourself, four eyes." He remarks as a quick grin appears on his face before being replaces by his usual frown.

After that, not wanting to embarrass herself even more, she excuses herself from both Levi and Mr. John, saying that she needs to return to her job. However, she cannot stop the butterfly from flying in her stomach as she remembers Mr. John's remarks and Levi's seemingly positive reply.

However—she shakes her head—Hange knows that there's no way he will fall for her.

Hange approaches her the next day to give him a small red book.

He glances at the book before looking over her like she has grown two heads. "What is this?"

"It's a book."

He rolls his eyes, "I know. I can see that, four eyes."

"Oh," She smiles, "I figured you must be bored in here, laying on your bed all day. So… maybe this book can provide you some form of entertainment."

He furrows his brows, "Don't tell me you smuggled this book all the way from America?"

"I am!" She proudly exclaims, "This book belonged to my father, so I brought it for a good luck charm—Also, excuse me, I'm not smuggling the book. We nurse are allowed to bring our personal items, as long as it doesn't take much place."

"Hmm," Levi replies nonchalantly as if ignoring her explanation. He then inspects the book and reads the title, Romeo and Juliet.

"Anyway, because this book is about a play, I like to imagine watching the scene unfold as I read the dialogues. Just as a way for me to fulfil my needs to see a theatre show." She pauses. "Well, I mean, I like watching movies. I've seen them once or twice, and they are cool. They are the future, for sure. But, I don't know, watching a theatre is just a different experience."

Levi looks over to her and asks, "Theatre? Like Broadway?"

Hange blows a raspberry and mutters, "I wish!" before smiling at him. "I've always wanted to visit New York, you know. To see the tall buildings, to hear the bustling city, to watch a show in the Broadway district, and maybe visit the Statue of Liberty; I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Arizona, we have beautiful Grand Canyon! However, I feel like there's nothing much that I can do there. So, I would like to try and live in a big city." She then glances suddenly to Levi, "Speaking of, where do you come from? I'm from Arizona—well, you already know that. How about you?"

Levi raises one of his eyebrows at her before speaking, "You know, this is my first time meeting a very chatty nurse."

From an outside perspective, his comment might sound offensive. However, Hange knows better, especially when she catches a slight raise from the corner of his mouth. So, instead of being offended, she chuckles at his remark, "Well, it's part of my special service in the war."

He stares at her before looking back at the book, "Whatever."

As he doesn't say anything after that, Hange decides to probe him again. "So, you're not going to answer my question?"

"New York." He answers without even bothering to look at her.

Hange grows ecstatic at his answer, "Wait, what?! Really? I—"

"One question." Levi quickly retorts, earning a puzzled look from Hange. "I'm just going to answer one question per day. If you want to ask about other things, you have to ask it tomorrow."

Such an odd offer but understandable, Hange thought. Hange knows she can be a handful in a conversation, but she doesn't seem to mind this arrangement. Because it means she has the reason to talk to him every day.

"Okay. I can do that." Hange replies.

Much to her delight, their question-and-answer session slowly becomes a daily occurrence. Even the other nurses subtly tease her about it, even purposely sending her to exclusively treat him.

"He looked sad and disappointed when being treated by us," Nanaba informs her one day.

Hange brushes their remarks with a chortle. She is sure that the other nurses are exaggerating. Hange assures them that she is just a naturally friendly person, that is why he tends to be more open around her.

Yes, there are no other reasons.

One time, during their conversation, Levi who has already finished reading the book, tells Hange that Romeo and Juliet are foolish. An opinion that Hange disagrees with. Thus, one afternoon, she is eagerly trying to explain to Levi that Romeo and Juliet can't be blamed for their action.

"You have to understand that they are just a teenager. Juliet is 13 years old while Romeo is arguably not a lot older than her. So, that explains their questionable decisions in the play. Moreover, growing up in two feuding households, they are doomed from the start. Even the Prince blame the parents for the tragedy." Hange says as she wraps a new bandage around his thigh.

"So, what you are trying to say is, they are two innocent people who were caught in the middle of a war between two opposing forces, right?" Levi inquires as he skims over the pages of the book.

Hange nods as she fastens the bandage, making sure it's neat and secure. "Yes, you got it! Not only them, but since most of the young characters died in the story, you can say that the younger generation becomes victims from a century-old hatred that they don't truly understand but they inherited just because they are told to."

"Then, do you consider the ending to be happy or not?" Levi asks her again.

As she finishes her task, she puts back the tools and old bandages to the tray and sighs, "I'm not sure. On one hand, it's a happy one because the family finally decided to make peace with each other. But, on the other hand, you can't bring back the children who died. They died very young from something that can be prevented, and that's tragic for me. Imagine the life that they could have once they grow up."

Levi hums and seems to be in deep thought.

Hange smiles and walks to his side, "All in all, I sure hope you had a great time reading it."

Levi glances at her before and shrugs, "Yeah, it was not bad."

"You don't have to return it to me so quickly. Just in case you want to do some rereading, or—"

"Hey, do you believe that the war will be over?" He abruptly cuts her.

Hange widens her eyes at his question, surely not expecting the topic shift. Oddly enough, he also seems to be slightly surprised by his own question. Hange clears her throat before answering, "Hmm… I think so? I mean the allies have Germany surrounded by now. I believe that it will only take a few more months until the German surrender."

From his pout and gaze, he seems unconvinced by her answers.

"At least, that's what I hope." She quickly adds. "I mean, don't you want this to be over?"

He shrugs, "It's been almost four years since the first time I was drafted as a soldier. It's not long but it's long enough to change a person. So, I'm not sure anymore, it feels like it will never end."

Hange nods, "I understand. I could only imagine the hardships and horrors that you must face every day. That must be hard."

"Yeah." He pauses, looking away from her. Instead, he stares at the picture of a couple in front of the book. "We, the soldiers, used to talk about what we want to do once the war is over. However, if you ask me now, I don't even remember what I want to do, anymore. I'm not even sure I have one."

Hange doesn't say anything, and neither does he. And even though the tent is filled with many noises from the occupants, but during that time, they can't hear anything or anyone but each other.

Hange then walks a little bit closer to him and says, "Well, if that's the case, why don't you just make a new one?"

He quickly glances back at her and raises his brows, "New one?"

"Make a new goal, wish, or whatever. I mean, we can't control the outcome of the war, but at least we can control the way we see it. I don't think it's a bad thing to be hopeful about this war. On the contrary, I think it's a strength even, strength to get through even the hardest and the most excruciating obstacles and situation."

He stares at her for a second before taking a deep breath and exhaling it. Hange catches a subtle smile on his face when he says, "You certainly know your way with words, huh?"

She shrugs and chuckles, "Well, is it working?"

"Maybe." He answers with an expression that remains unchanged. However, from the way his voice softens, Hange knows that it is definitely working.

Just as Hange predicted before, Mr. John is finally able to return to his post after a few days of rest and monitoring. However, before that, he makes the time to visit the tent to send his gratitude toward the medical staff, especially the nurses.

"Miss Nurse, I can't thank you enough for everything. I'm sorry if I'm annoying or rude during my stay." Mr. John—full in his uniform—tells Hange. "I shall tell my family about the kind and intelligent nurse that took care of me. Oh, maybe you should visit them once the war is over. I think they'll like you. My daughter could learn a thing or two from you."

"Mr. John." Hange says warmly, "That's such high praise coming from you. Don't worry, you are such an exemplary patient, you are kind and nice to us. I would greatly miss you, sir—and yes, I would love to meet them."

"Oh, and maybe you can also tell them about how brave I fought the war." He adds.

"Now you are asking too much," Hange teases, "Why don't you tell them yourself?"

He whines, "Miss Nurse, don't you get it? It's more believable when it comes from another person! Especially from you! You've listened more about my story on the battlefield more than anyone."

That is true. Hange has listened to his story repeatedly that she remembers all of it. She is sure she can recite his story easily in her sleep.

"Alright." Hange smiles in defeat. "But, I expect a great payment."

"You got that covered, Miss Nurse." He remarks in glee before glancing at the raven-haired patient. He walks closer to Levi's bed and salutes, "Captain."

Levi waved his hand, "No need to be so formal with me."

Mr. John loosened up and nods, "It's nice to finally get to know you, Captain."

"Yeah, me too."

" I've heard so much about you, Captain. You are still young but you are capable, responsible, and strong. I could only wish to be like you."

Levi shakes his head, "Please, you are already far more than enough."

He laughs, "Thought you would say that."

Levi nods, "Good luck out there, don't die."

"Got it, sir!" He says before stealing a look at Hange. Mr. John then grins to Levi, sending him a wink. Which Levi doesn't answer or regard, but the way his body becomes relaxed indicates there's something in between them. Hange can only stare at them with confusion.

"Anyway, be sure to invite me to your wedding." Mr. John says to both Levi and Hange.

"Wedding?" Hange repeats quietly, glancing quickly at Levi before gasping when she realizes the implication. "What?! No?!"

Too late, Mr. John already disappears from the scene. Leaving Hange tangled in her own messy emotions. She feels like she can't face Levi, not after that tease. Not wanting to be around him any longer, she let out a laugh that surely sound phony before making up an excuse to grab a new bandage from another tent. All without ever looking at him.

However, that does not mean she did not wonder about what expression that he made when Mr. John told him that.

Also, I can't promise when will the new chapter be updated, but I'll get there eventually! So, thank you for being so patient with me!

After being hospitalized (first time ever, baby), now I REALLY know how important nurses are to the hospital!
Kudos to all of the nurses out there!
