My fix of the finale...not that it needed to be fixed...but it scared the crap out of me and what they will do next season.

"We should get married…"

It came out of the blue and it took a moment for the words, that any other time would fill him with joy, to sink in and register in his own traumatized heart. He takes a close look at the woman he loves with all of his heart and he can see the pain in her eyes, pain more than likely mirrored in his own…Kim…and even though what she saying might be true, he can see it's coming…he knows it's coming from a place of fear and desperation.

He puts his hands on her arms, rubbing soft circles with his thumbs, "Hailey…I love you so much and I've thought about it…I really have…I've thought about spending the rest of my life with you…I can't imagine anything else.

"But I also know that this isn't where we are right now…that this was spurred on by today." He smiles at her, a small ghost of a smile, "Someday I'll say yes, someday…Someday, I'll ask you and I want you to say yes. But I can't say yes right now. I know this isn't coming from a place of love, a place of where our relationship has evolved to, because even though we both might want that and we imagine that in the future, it's not where we are.

He sees the pain in her eyes, the tears dripping down her face and he knows he's hurt her and it's made his own eyes sting with tears. Hurting Hailey is the last thing he wants to do, but he couldn't say yes in this moment. That would end up hurting her more, hurting them.

"Nothing has changed Hailey, nothing…" He touches her cheeks and swipes away tears with his thumbs, "…me saying no to this, is not me saying no to us, it's me saying not right now."

She still can't talk, but takes a big breath, then another, calming her spinning thoughts knowing that he's right…he's right…he's so goddamn right and her heart swells with so much love she almost asks him again.

He smiles when he sees that she understands…the hurt is gone and in its place, love glows through the tears … … until something else wipes that out and her brow crinkles and another pain, no fear this time…overpowers that love. Immediately his heartbeat ticks up, knocking out a staccato against his ribs. There's something else going on here.

Hailey…"

She swallows…tries to swallow the fear of the situation or maybe its the fear of the truth she is about to choke out to Jay…will it wipe out everything he just said to her? She has to take that chance…She can't destroy what they have with a lie. He said he would follow her anywhere, but she can't lead him to where the lie might take them…she can't do that to him.

"Hailey…"

The way he says her name, filled with love and worry and conviction…he would be there for her. He wasn't going anywhere…at least for now, her scared heart tells her.

She closes her eyes, needing to be brave but doesn't know if she has it in her.

When she opens her eyes, all he sees is a lost little girl and he wants so desperately to pull her into his arms and tell her…promise her it will be okay. She looks so lost…his mind spins to her childhood, to her relationship with her dad and imagines those eyes constantly filled with hurt and longing.

And that sends a terrifying thought slamming into his head and he closes his eyes wanting to block out what he knows…he fucking knows what happened or at least an inkling of it.

"Hails…babe, please…What's going on? What happened?"

She puts her hand over her mouth not sure if there will be bile with the puke of words that she doesn't want, but needs, to say.

The look he gives her is one of fear and understanding but lingering in the edges is anger…possibly rage, if she knew what that looked like when it came to Jay…she has never seen it.

"Did you find Voight?"

He knows something happened and whatever it is, it now encompasses her whole being.

She watches as immediately he is filled with rage…it was anger before…this, this is what rage looks like on Jay…rage on her behalf…her heart blooms with love and breaks at the same time.

Voight has tried so hard to toe the line, reform, to become a 'by the book cop,' instead of one walking on the edge of a blade between cop and criminal, willingly stepping off on the side of criminal when he needs to…wants to. But all that doesn't matter because he knows Voight stepped over the line and he wants to smash something because he knows Voight took Hailey over that edge with him.

2138 Courtney

He sends the text and knows Voight will show up…he doesn't have a choice. Hailey told him everything…Voight doesn't get a choice. Not when it comes to Hailey…never when it comes to Hailey.

He knew what he would find when he walked into that warehouse…the beginning of the reckoning he knew would come…he just didn't know it would come from Jay…or at least not yet…or maybe he is kidding himself…Jay is Jay.

He flinches when sees where Jay is standing…the kid's boots anchored in truth…the dirty stain of blood spilled. Neither of them have ever been one to pussy foot around the issue.

Voight stops a few feet away, saying nothing. There is nothing he can say, not yet…maybe not ever.

"You just couldn't do it could you?"

He tries to bank the rage. He needs Voight to hear him.

"We did it by the book. We found Kim."

Voight being Voight can't help himself, a last ditch effort to, what? Prove himself right when he was so goddamn wrong… "You were…"

But Halstead was having none of it, he wasn't going to let him talk.

"But you couldn't do it. You had to cross that line again and you took Hailey with you.

"There is a small part of me that gets why you stepped over that line again…you saw what following the law did to Superintendent Miller…Darrell…you weren't going to let it happen again…I get that…it's Kim…"

He steps off the blood stain, entering Voight's airspace, not backing down from the look that flickers across Voight's face, the look he gives the drudges of society. That, 'or else' that puts the fear of God in the criminals of Chicago. But that look means nothing to him. He steps even closer, he's got a look of his own.

"You're going to fix this. I don't care what you have to do. I don't care if they tear apart the unit…I don't care if you go to jail…you're going to fix it."

He steps closer to Voight and jabs a finger into his Sargent's chest and grinds out through a clenched jaw, "But you don't take Hailey, anyone, with you…Christ Voight, you sent her to New York to get her back on the straight and narrow, and then put her right back in your dirty footprints."

He jabs his old boss in the chest again, "I'm not gonna let you do it. You aren't going to take anyone else down. You fix it or I will…you've got 24 hours."

He takes a step to leave then get's back in Voight's face, "…and if you think you can weasel out of this, pin it on someone else, pin it on Hailey…I had Officer Atwater and Sargent Platt take Detective Upton's statement. It's locked in the drawer of Trudy's desk…I've got the key."

All he can do is grunt that he heard the ultimatum as Jay walks away. A mixture of feelings run through him. He knows he fucked up, knows he's done. There is sadness…also relief…he's so tired. The feeling that surprises him though is pride, he is proud of Halstead. Proud of the kid for not becoming him. Proud of him for staying true to himself. He nods to himself…he meant it when he told Jay the unit would be his someday…and it looks that someday is today.

Okey dokey. Hope you liked it. Back to working on HAK and a A/U within the CPD universe. That oddly enough is soooooo the opposite of this story it's not even funny...well actually it is. You'll see. Be well peeps!
