Watching
"Her dad is the police chief, you idiot." Bakugo leaned against a tree with his arms crossed.
"I know it might sound like a stretched, but it's possible that she and her dad are in this together," Midoriya said.
"But why?" Todoroki blinked.
"Maybe they're working together to get everyone off this island so they can buy out the land and sell it at a huge price." Midoriya looked at his friend. "It's the best solution I have been able to come up with."
Todoroki exhaled. It was possible. As far as they could see there was nothing else valuable on the island. Or nothing they could see. Either way they had an obligation to investigate all possibilities and leads. And Kai did appear right after they lost sight of the villain. She could be the one they are looking for. "Okay. I'm not convinced you are a hundred percent right, Midoriya, but I will go along with this plan."
Midoriya nodded. "Then it's settled. Tonight we'll start taking turns watching over Kai. Any volunteers to go first?"
"I'll do it." Todoroki volunteered and they all headed back to the house. On the walk there he remained quietly thinking. As a hero, he knew Midoriya was right. This was the correct path for them to take. But why was he so unsettled by it? Why was guilt gathering in his stomach about spying on Kai? It's not like she was his friend. They hadn't even known each other for a day. He actually didn't know anything about her besides her name, her dad, and where she lived.
Todoroki shook his head. He couldn't be divided like this. He had to focus on the task at hand. There was no reason to feel guilty. This was nothing more than routine hero work. They would follow her and learn if she was guilty or innocent. Of course this would be a whole lot easier if she would just speak to them. Between the three of them they might be able to determine if she was lying.
Reaching the house they found Kai had beaten them there. She was in the kitchen, getting food, before glaring at them and disappearing upstairs.
They settled into the living room, going over everything they knew again. Fuji had came home for a short while then headed back to work where he was doing some over time work in an attempt to capture the villain as well. None of them mentioned their plans to the older man. If they were their real targets then it would only make matters worse.
Then again, why would Fuji have requested them to come? If he was in on it why would he call for help? Was Kai doing it all on her own? Did Fuji even suspect her? Were they right? Were they wrong?
He had the long hours of the night to think about it. As Midoriya and Bakugo went to bed, Todoroki headed outside to keep watch. He set up on the side of the house, hidden by shadows, to watch and wait to see if Kai left at any time during the night. He didn't believe she would. If she were the villain they were looking for then it would be a poor choice to make another move tonight. She, or whoever, had already struck once. Surely the villain would wait until tomorrow, at least.
After a couple of hours listening to the night Todoroki walked under Kai's window. Rising himself up with his ice he peered inside. Kai was tucked into her bed, seeming to be fast asleep.
He lowered himself back to the ground and sat down under her window. The hours continued to pass without a disturbance. Then Midoriya came out to relieve him so he could get some sleep before the day began.
Todoroki crawled into bed and pulled the covers up over him. His mind spun over Kai and the villain. There's got to be a way to get her to talk.
