Distrust
Todoroki chewed his food in silence. It had been four days since they had started following Kai around. So far they found her doing nothing that suggested villainous activity. That could mean she was innocent. But that could also mean she was laying low for a while longer. The villain hadn't attacked again either.
His eyes flickered up to Kai's footsteps. She had eaten breakfast in her room again. Now she headed out to do who knows what, and without a glance in their direction.
"What a brat," Bakugo scoffed.
"Either way." Midoriya finished his breakfast, placed his dishes in the sink, and headed for the door. "I should be off. Don't want her to get too far way."
"Watch yourself out there," Todoroki said. "Call us if you need back up."
Midoriya nodded.
Todoroki watched his friend leave before finishing up his breakfast. He and Bakugo then headed out for patrol.
...
Midoriya stayed several yards behind her, just enough to keep her in sight while keeping one eye on his surroundings in case he needed to hide. He followed Kai through the edge of the town and out to the woods. As she rounded a tree he lost sight of her for a few seconds. He ran to catch up. Pausing at the tree he peeked around to see if she was still there. She wasn't.
"What the heck?" Midoriya stepped around the tree. "Where did she go?"
He was about to take a step when a solid force rammed into him, pinning him to the ground. His heart jumped. Was it the villain?
Midoriya glanced over his shoulder and froze. It was Kai. A hard glare pinned on him.
"Uh, hi, Kai." Midoriya smiled. "I was out looking for the villain."
Kai huffed through her nose. She climbed off of him.
Midoriya began to stand. Before he got to his feet she grabbed his shirt and slammed him against the tree with another harsh glare. He gulped. Did she know he was following her? Did she know they were following her?
She slammed her palm against the tree right beside his head.
Midoriya chuckled nervously. Now it was obvious. She knew.
...
Todoroki was flipping through papers when Midoriya finally met up with them at the police station. Looking up he found Midoriya with a sheepish look on his face. "Did something happen?"
"Yeah, Kai knows we've been following her," he said.
"What?! You moron! You got caught didn't you?!" Bakugo slammed his hands on the table and stood.
"Y-yes. B-but it wasn't my fault. She knew we all were doing it." Midoriya waved his hands.
"You idiot!" Bakugo sat down.
"Well, that's always a possibility," Todoroki said. "No point in feeling bad about it."
Midoriya nodded.
"Enough of this crap! I want answers!" Bakugo marched towards Fuji's office.
"Hey! Wait!" Midoriya called and followed.
Todoroki hurried after them. He closed the door once they were all inside.
"What's her problem?!" Bakugo demanded as he pounded on Fuji's desk.
"Her quirk." Fuji's blunt answer stilled the boys. None of them expected him to answer. "I can't, or won't, tell you what it is or why it's caused problems for her, that's her choice to tell, but I will say that it has caused a lot of problems for her. People didn't want to deal with her. And because of that she doesn't trust people. I took her in four years ago. Things have gotten a little better since but she still won't talk about it. So I don't push it. I've learned it's best to let her do things in her own time. I've tried to get her to talk before but she always pulled away from me. Since I've stopped that she's opened up a bit. So it's best if you don't push it either."
"Don't tell me what to do!" Bakugo released small blasts from his hands.
"On another note, I take it you haven't found anymore on the villain?" Fuji leaned back in his chair.
"No." Todoroki shook his head. "Whoever this person is they're really good about not wanting to be found."
Fuji nodded with a frown. "That's why we've been having so much trouble. If only we could find a clue. One little clue."
"Don't worry about it," Midoriya said. "I promise will find and stop this person."
"I hope so. This town won't last much longer if people keep leaving." Fuji looked out the window.
The boys left the station.
"Doesn't trust people and doesn't talk." Midoriya cupped his chin as they walked through the town. "I bet her quirk has something to do with her voice then."
"That is possible," Todoroki agreed, his eyes scanning the crowds. Though it wasn't the villain he was looking for. It was Kai. Maybe, now that they had more information on her, just maybe he could talk to her. He might not get anywhere but he had to try.
