The boys were once again patrolling at night when an explosion when off a few blocks from them. Sirens rang out in the air as they ran towards the disruption.
Todoroki jumped into action. He threw out his hand to contain the fire before it spread to other shops. From the corner of his eye he spotted movement. "The villain!"
"We'll go after the villain!" Midoriya took off. "You take care of the fire! We can't let it spread!"
"I know!" Todoroki nodded.
"No! Papa!" a girl's cries rose over the blazing fire.
"Melody! Stay back!"
Todoroki looked to find a teenage boy holding back a girl.
"I can't! Papa's still in there!" she said.
"Crap! Someone's inside!" Todoroki aimed his eyes to the door. He pushed himself inside. Smoke burned his eyes and nostrils. "Where are you?! Hello!"
Only fire responded back with sharp cracks. Beams snapped. Fire burned his skin despite the ice being expelled from his body.
Smoke tickled his throat. He coughed. The fire raged. "Did the villain use some kind of accelerator? This fire is burning too hot. Where is the man?"
Todoroki continued to search through the flame, unable to locate anyone. Were the kids wrong? Could their dad have gotten out?
There was no way to know. With the flames raging and the building crumbling he knew he wasn't going to be able to find the man.
"Hey!" a muffled voice called out for him.
Todoroki turned to find the firemen had arrive. Good. They're better trained for this.
With the fireman's instructions he headed back outside. Minutes slow down to painful crawling hours. The boy and girl watched.
Todoroki cringed, his ice now helping the hoses calm the blaze. The firemen were taking too long. If anyone was still in there would they even be able to survive this?
Finally the firemen came back out, one with a body over his shoulders.
Todoroki was unable to get a close look at the body. He wanted to know if the person was okay, but there was something else he needed to do now. With the fire now dying down he turned and ran in the direction his friends and the villain went.
With any luck they had caught the villain this time. Or at least managed to get some clue, DNA, or something that could help them.
His hope sank when he finally ran into them. They were on the ground, breathing hard. "Are you okay?!"
"Yeah, we're fine," Midoriya said between breathes.
"Shut up! Of course I'm fine! I'm so fine when I get my hands on that stupid villain I'm going to kill him!"
Ignoring Bakugo's rant, Todoroki looked around. His brow knitted upon spotting Kai. "Her again."
"Huh?" Midoriya and Bakugo looked.
"Hey!" With a blast Bakugo took after her.
"Ka-chan! Wait!" Midoriya jumped to his feet.
They followed.
With another blast, Bakugo tackled Kai to the ground. He rolled her over and grabbed her shirt. "Where do you think you're going?! Tell us why you're here!"
Kai glared, closed her eyes, and tossed her head to the side.
Bakugo growled.
"Ka-chan! You can't treat people that way!" Midoriya came to stand beside them.
"Let her go," Todoroki said. "We're not going to get answers this way."
"Shut up! I'm going to rip the answers out of her!"
"And how are you going to do that with her locked up tighter than a bank vault?" Midoriya asked.
"Just shut up or I'll-" Bakugo was cut off as Kai grabbed his wrist. With fast reflexes she had him thrown off her in seconds. She jumped to her feet and disappeared into the forest. "You brat! I'm going to kill you!"
"Calm down. You shouldn't have pinned her in the first place."
"You want me to kill you two, idiot?!"
Todoroki watched her go as Bakugo argued with Midoriya. He then followed after her. Though he had no idea where she was going, he had a guess.
He was right.
He found her standing on the ledge.
For a moment he didn't think she knew he was there, but she turned around. "Sorry. I'm not here to attack you or anything. I only want to talk."
Kai frowned.
"I know you don't trust people."
She tensed.
"Don't worry. Fuji didn't tell us everything. He only told us that you don't trust people because of your quirk." Todoroki paused and waited for her to relax. When she did he continued, "I only wanted to talk to you for a minute. You don't have to answer. I only wanted you to know that I don't believe you're the monster, the villain."
Kai gave him a suspicious look.
"We're only here to help. And I think you might be able to help with that. It's your choice if you do or not." He paused for a beat. "Well, that's all I wanted to say. At least think about what I said."
With that Todoroki left her standing there to ponder his words.
