Truths
"This isn't possible," Kai mumbled as she, the boys, and her dad sat around the living room.
Todoroki continued to stare at the photo.
"Don't worry about it, Kai." Fuji placed his hand on her shoulder. "I know it's not you. This is someone's quirk. That villain is posing as you."
"That has to be it." Midoriya tapped his chin in thought. "That would explain a lot."
"What are you muttering about, idiot?" Bakugo asked.
"I've been thinking about how all these attacks have happened at night." Midoriya looked at each one of them. "Assuming this villain is using his or her quirk as a cover, then that would explain how we were always losing sight of them."
"So some sort of camouflage quirk." Fuji crossed his arms. "How could we not have thought of that? If that's the case then this person lied on their quirk forms. No one has a quirk like that, that I'm aware of."
"If that's the case why would they try and pin it on Kai?" Todoroki asked.
"Good question." Midoriya looked at her. "Do you know if anyone doesn't like you?"
Kai shook her head. "Well, not anyone here anyway."
"Huh? What do you mean by that?" Midoriya asked.
"You mean your quirk?" Todoroki asked.
Kai nodded, eyes locked on the floor.
"I know you're probably not ready to talk about it, but it would be best if you told them about your quirk," Fuji said, his voice low and calm.
Kai closed her eyes. Several silent moments passed before she finally spoke. "Fine. My quirk... I call it siren."
"Siren?" Todoroki mumbled.
"When I sing I can take hold of any boy's mind, no matter their age, and control them. It works on girls too, but I can only stun them for a short while. I can't control them at all. And it only works when I want it to work. But when I was a kid I loved to sing and couldn't control my quirk well. My classmates and other people started accusing me of using my quirk to put myself in an advantage over everyone else in grades, sports, and such. I never did that, but the damage was already done. Any time I got a good grade, or got a lead part in a play, people always complained that I got it because of my quirk. They said I only did it because my parents didn't want me and I was trying to win them back with being so good at everything. It's not true. I don't even know who my parents are. I only know that I was dropped off at a hospital when I was two years old. Eventually, I stopped using my quirk. I stopped sing. I stopped talking. Until Fuji appeared. He adopted me and brought me here in hopes I could get away from those people."
"I see now why you didn't want to talk. You don't want people to think you're using your quirk against them," Midoriya said.
Kai nodded. "So far it has worked. Until now." She rubbed her forehead. "I have no idea why anyone would want to blame me for that villain's attack."
"It could be because they're using you as an escape goat," Todoroki said. "By not speaking people will think you're odd. So it would be human nature to believe the weird one is causing problems."
With a sigh, Kai leaned back in her chair.
"Whatever. You should just kill all those idiots." Bakugo put his arms over the back of the couch.
"Ka-chan, you can't tell people that," Midoriya said.
"Either way, it still doesn't help us stop this jerk," Bakugo said.
"That's true," Midoriya said.
"We need to form some kind of trap," Todoroki said.
"You got one in mind?" Midoriya looked at him as did everyone else.
"It might be possible to lure the villain out if Kai reaches out to them." Todoroki raised his eyes to her. This plan was a long shot, but seemingly the only one they had.
...
Their plan was set. Kai sent out messages to the villain attacking the town by radio and posters. While she waited at the designated stop near the cliff she always went to, the three UA students were hidden nearby. Once the villain appeared Bakugo and Midoriya were going to jump in as a distraction so Todoroki could freeze the villain in place.
Kai headed out to get ready. Crickets chirped in the night.
"Hold up a second." Todoroki jogged to catch up to her. "I have a question for you. I've heard a song on the wind before. It was you, wasn't it?"
Kai nodded. "It's an American song called My Side of the Story by JT Hodges. Sorry if I took control of you."
"You didn't. I mean not really. I did feel something when I heard it, but it's okay." Todoroki stiffen when she looked at him. Heat rushed to his cheeks. "Well, good luck. And be careful."
Turning he ran off to get to his position.
Much to everyone's surprise, the villain appeared.
Todoroki tensed. He hoped this would work as he watched Kai and the villain talk. Though he couldn't hear what they were saying he could tell the villain was bragging about what they had been doing.
Then Bakugo and Midoriya jumped in. As they distracted the villain, Todoroki readied himself and shot out his ice, freezing the villain in place. He ran up to his friends, right to Kai. "You okay?"
Kai nodded.
"Did you get it?" Midoriya asked.
"I did." Kai pulled out a recorder from her pocket.
"So that's why he always attacked at night," Todoroki said looking at the villain. He had green skin, his ears fish like, but that faded into the color of his ice.
"And why my quirk wouldn't work on him," Kai said. "His quirk prevented that from happening."
"Why did he do all this though?" Midoriya asked.
"It's all on the tape," Kai said. "He did it because there still is gold under the town. Apparently its farther down than people had thought."
The villain glared at her.
"His quirk lets him blend. And Midoriya was right about why he was appearing as me," Kai said.
"We better get this guy to the police," Midoriya said.
...
"Here." Todoroki held out a piece of paper to Kai. They stood outside of the airport, ready to go home.
"Hm?" Kai took and looked at it. "Your phone numbers?"
"Yeah. We were hoping we could keep in touch." Midoriya smiled.
"I didn't give you anything. They did it," Bakugo said.
Todoroki wondered what she would do with it as she stared at the numbers. Much to his surprise, she smiled and tucked the paper in her pocket.
"I think I'd like that."
"Whatever." Bakugo marched into the airport.
"See you." Midoriya waved and followed his friend. "Good luck rebuilding your home! Use that gold wisely!"
Todoroki hung back. There was one more thing he wanted to tell her. "Kai."
"Hm?"
"I think you should take up singing again."
Her eyebrows rose. "Why?"
"You have a very beautiful voice." Heat tapped at his cheeks. His heartbeat increased. "It would be a shame if you kept silent."
"Well... I have missed it. I suppose I could pick it up again." Kai tapped her toes on the pavement. "I use to want to be a singer."
"Then become one."
Kai locked eyes with him.
"I want you to become the best singer you can be." Todoroki meant it. He wanted her to sing.
"All right then. I'll become the best singer I can be if you become the best hero you can be."
"Deal." With that said, Todoroki stepped forward and placed a kiss on her cheek.
