Jersey 5-0 Chpt 60
Hey guys, thanks for the love. Here's another one, i hope you like
"I wish I had this kind of scouting intel all the time." Billy Donovan said happily. "I mean this will make a
snatch and grab easy."
"Good to hear. You plan it and we'll work on the warrants." Danny was pleased.
"Let us know when we can go and get this character." Billy said as he gathered up his papers and put
them in his briefcase. "I'll start prepping the team so we'll be ready."
"As soon as we know, you'll be my first call." Williams promised.

Arriving at the Williams' residence, Rachel got out and took Charlie out of his car seat. Steve was
already out of the car waiting for the toddler. The minute the toddler's feet landed on the grass, Charlie
was off, running as fast as he could toward the front porch.
Steve scooped up the giggling boy on his third unhurried stride.
Catherine and Rachel watched, smiling. "He's going to be a great father." Catherine said out loud, but
in a thoughtfully quiet voice.
Rachel kept her voice down also, lower than her son's laughter. "Agreed. He's good with Gracie also.
Either way, your child will be most happy with their father." She looked at Catherine, who was handing
her the cigar box. "Going to start a family right away?"
Catherine grabbed the wine, then locked up the car. "It happens when it happens. Near future or five
years from now. I think we're both ready for parenthood."
The women followed Steve and the giggling Charlie into the house.
Steve put the boy down. "Hey Charlie, think Puppy missed us? I bet he's feeling lonely,"
The child's face brightened instantly. He turned and ran up the stairs as fast as he could. "Puppy! I'm
coming."
"I'll be upstairs, playing with Puppy and Charlie." Steve grinned and followed the tyke upstairs at a more
dignified speed.

"Excellent. Thank you, Ms. Douglas."
"My pleasure, Detective Williams."
Danny hung up. His lunch forgotten, he went in search of Lou Grover. He found him in the conference
room, making copies of Junior Reigns' intel. "Lou, we got the warrant. Should be here within the hour.
Would you please coordinate with Billy Donovan?"
"That will be my pleasure, boss." Lou said with a huge grin. "Are we going?"
Danny grinned back. "Absolutely. What kind of boss would I be if I didn't let you cuff him?"
"You'd be a tease." Lou agreed.

"It's a go, men! Saddle up!" Billy Donovan announced after reading Sgt. Williams' text.
His team jumped into action, gathering their equipment and any other last minute items.
"Randy, go get Williams and his team."
"10-4."

"Steve."
"Hey Danny, what's up?" He was sitting on the floor with Charlie and Puppy. Playtime was put on hold.
"We're going out to serve a warrant on George's accomplice."
"Good. Can I do anything?"
"Nothing. I'm taking my team and the entire S.W.A.T. team. You stay there. I'll call you when we have
him in custody."
"Okay. Call me when it's a done deal."
"You got it buddy."
Steve ended the call. He smiled at Charlie and Puppy. "Do you think Puppy would like to go downstairs
and see your mom and Catherine?"
Charlie grabbed Puppy and took the man's offered hand. Together, they went downstairs.

The women were relaxing at the dining room table, sipping coffee and nibbling on cookies. Catherine lit
up when she saw Steve, Charlie and Puppy enter.
"Hey you." She said with a bright smile.
"Mummy, may puppy and I go outside and play?"
"You may, but do stay on the patio."
"Yes, mummy." Charlie happily went outside with his toy puppy.
Steve sat down at the table as Catherine poured him a cup of coffee. "Thanks, my cutie Cat."
"You are welcome, super Steve. Cream, sugar?"
"Neither." He drank some coffee and snagged a cookie.
Rachel enjoyed their banter. "You look serious, Steven. Something on your mind?"
"Danny called. He and the S.W.A.T. team are ready to go in and grab Rich Greenley."
Rachel almost choked on her coffee. "Dangerous?"
Steve chided himself for being so blunt in front of a civilian. "S.W.A.T. team goes in first. They'll subdue
and arrest the suspect. Danny is there to take final custody, that's all." He returned his attention to his
coffee with, he hoped, an unconcerned bearing.
Trusting Steve at his word, Rachel noticeably relaxed and resumed drinking her coffee while Steve and
Catherine exchanged neutral looks with concerned eyes.

"Disperse. When we're all in position, we'll go." Billy Donovan directed as the tactical vehicle stopped
just out of sight of Greenley's warehouse home.
The team exited the van and surrounded the old, decommissioned storehouse. Once ready signals were
in, Billy Donovan gave the 'go' command.
Danny, Lou and Chin waited outside the perimeter, watching body cam footage with Donovan in the
van.
The radio crackled to life. "Ah, Billy."
"Yeah, Paul."
"No one's here."
"What!?"
"We did two sweeps, no one's here. How many heat signatures to you count?"
Billy turned on the scanner and did a quick count. "Only the team. Damn it! I'm coming in." Donovan
turned to Danny. "Let's go and see what we can see. He was there twenty minutes ago. We cycled off
all electronic gear in case he was monitoring, we didn't want even a possibility of giving him a heads up."
Danny and his team followed the S.W.A.T. leader into Greenley's residence. The abandoned warehouse
was dank and dark. Smack dab in the middle was the refuge of life of Rich Greenley.
Paul was standing in the middle of Greenley's 'den,' looking irate. "Hey boss, you aren't gonna believe
this shit!"
"What shit?" Billy felt his blood pressure climb.
"This asshole has an escape tunnel."
"WHAT?"
"Reinforced and lit."
"You have got to be fucking kidding me! What the hell for?"
Paul shrugged. "In case of fire? How the hell should I know?"
Billy ignored his subordinate's attitude. He felt burned too.
Lou had walked off from the conversation in disgust. He looked around and spotted something
troubling on Greenley's refrigerator. "Hey Sarge, you live on Coastal Carriage Way don't you?"
Danny looked at his partner with annoyance. "Yeah. So?"
"876?"
"Lou…"
"We got a bigger, more immediate problem. It's on his 'to do' list. Two P.M. today."
Danny looked at Billy Donovan with panic-stricken eyes, turned and ran towards the exit.
"Saddle up guys! Let's follow Williams now!" The S.W.A.T. team quickly followed their leader who was
following the detective at a dead run.
Danny ran to his car with Lou and Chin close behind. He grabbed his cell phone and saw that he had no
signal. He was tempted to throw the useless cell phone down on the pavement. Instead, he put the
phone in his mouth and dug in his pockets for the keys. Lou and Chin were waiting by their car doors,
hands on the handles. "I'm going to kill him! He's going after MY FAMILY!"
"We are with you, Boss." Lou said calmly as Chin nodded. They piled in the car, barely closing doors
before Danny slammed the car in gear and roared off.
Richard, 'the tank's' driver, was loaded with the entire S.W.A.T. team and followed Williams so close he
could see the three friends arguing.
"Please boss, let me drive. Killing us is not going to help your wife and kids." Lou all but begged.
Danny still had his cell phone in his mouth. He nodded and jerked his car to the side of the road.
Richard anticipated this and took his foot off the gas just in time to avoid colliding with the sedan. "Sir,
driver switch."
"Copy." Donovan acknowledged. "Everyone, stay where you are." He leaned back in his seat, listening
to his team's response. Before everyone could speak up, 'the tank' lurched forward.
With Lou driving, Danny was free to fight with his phone. "Why don't I have bloody cell service?!"
"Because we're in a geographical bowl. Without a sat phone, a land line or wi-fi booster, you're not
getting a cell signal. You will, in about a half mile." Chin reported from the back seat.
Danny nodded as he kept hitting redial.

Rachel left to check on Charlie. Catherine leaned over to Steve. "This raid, the arsonist?"
Steve nodded. "He's most likely George's murder by arson guy." He sighed. "I'm glad Danny called in
S.W.A.T. instead of trying to take him with just Lou and Chin Ho."
"And Kono." Catherine reminded him, frowning with a smile.
Steve smiled at her reminder. "I don't think Danny mentioned her, Catty Cat. I wasn't excluding her."
"Oh."
Rachel returned. "Would you two help me find Charlie? He didn't stay on the patio."
Steve chuckled. "Maybe he took Puppy on a walk."
Catherine gave Steve a dirty look.
"Hey, the kid has a wonderful imagination. Well, what does one do with a dog outside?" He held his
hands up defensively. "What else could he do for real to fit his imagination?"
"You're right." Catherine admitted. She turned to Rachel. "Would Charlie go down to the beach
alone?"
"He has never left the patio without his father or l. He knows he'd get a paddling from the both of us."
Rachel replied. An idea hit her. "He might be under the deck. For a toddler, he loves to find technical
loopholes in language."
The three headed outside. Steve and Catherine searched the deck as Rachel closed the sliding glass
door. "Anything?" She asked anxiously.
"No, but I found Puppy." Steve said stoically. He held the broken toy in his hands.
Catherine turned, ready to lay into Steve about his fixation on the stupid toy, when she caught the
concern in his eyes as he held the broken toy. She swallowed the harsh words she was ready to hurl in
his direction.
"Oh dear." Rachel said quietly.
The trio started down the staircase to below the deck and the beach.
Steve's cell phone rang. Seeing it was Danny, he stopped. "You ladies go on ahead and I'll answer this
and be right down." He waited until the women were out of sight to answer. "Hey Danny, what's up?"
He asked in a quiet tone. "The raid go well?"
"Steve!" Danny said urgently. "Greenley wasn't there! The son-of-a-bitch had an escape tunnel and MY
home address on his to do list!"
"Copy that. I'm on it."
"I'm enroute to you and I got the team and a S.W.A.T. team with me. Back up in 30."
"Copy that."
Both men ended the call. Steve pocketed his cell and checked his side arm. Safety off, chambered
round: he was ready to rock and roll. He heard the women coming up the stairs.
"Anything lieutenant?"
The use of her rank alerted Catherine that something was up. "No commander. Nothing."
He nodded as he made eye contact with his fiancée. Message received and acknowledged. He looked
around the deck. "Rachel, where does the side walkway go?"
Rachel blinked. She pushed aside her worry to answer him. "Down to the garage's side door, but it's
locked."
"Let's check. Perhaps it was left unlocked." They headed that way with Steve in the lead.
Coming down the stairs, Steve noticed the door lock was broken. He used hand signals to alert
Catherine to the situation.
The navy lieutenant put her hand on Rachel's shoulder, stopping her. She put a finger to her lips.
Rachel stopped and turned to Catherine. Seeing the sign for silence, she nodded and stood aside to let
Catherine slip by to back up Steve.
Seeing Rachel was out of harm's way and Catherine in position to back his play, Steve slowly pushed
open the broken door. The garage was dimly lit but bright enough to see that no one was inside. He
cautiously entered and searched the shadows for any movement or anything out of place.
Catherine followed him in, gun in hand. Seeing the overhead light switch, she made a quiet clicking
sound to draw Steve's attention.
The commander turned at the sound and nodded acknowledgement of the lights were coming on.
The overhead lights lit the dark garage brightly. Aside from Danny's weight set in the far corner, the tool
bench and the laundry appliances, the garage was empty.
Both Steve and Catherine relaxed a bit as Catherine waved Rachel the okay to come in.
Rachel cringed at the sight of the broken door lock. She moved into the garage, looking everywhere at
once. "Nothing?"
Suddenly, the top of the washer popped open. Both Steve and Catherine dropped down, weapons at
the ready. Clothing flew out and Charlie popped up. "Mummy!"
"Charlie, baby!" Rachel ran for the toddler. She picked him up, out of the washer. "How did you get in
there?"
"The skinny man put me in here. He said I'd know when to come out. You talked, I thought it was time.
Mummy, he hurt Puppy." Charlie finished sadly.
"I know." Rachel soothed the boy. "Uncle Steve found Puppy. I'm sure he can fix him."
"Weally?"
"Absolutely!" Rachel and Steve said at the same time. Both smiled when the boy burst into a happy
grin that was so much like his father's.
"I feel cornered in here. Let's go back outside." Catherine whispered.
"Right you are." Steve quietly acknowledged as he ushered the little group toward the broken door.
Once outside, they made their way back to the deck. Steve stopped the group before they could be
seen through the sliding glass door. "Rachel, you and Charlie stay here. Catherine and I will go in and
deal with the skinny man."
Rachel looked ill at ease with the plan but remembered her promise to Danny to take Steve's lead, if the
situation arose.
Well, the situation arose.
She picked Charlie up, held him close and awaited further instructions.
Steve looked at Catherine and saw apprehension there also. He decided to level with them. "I think the
skinny man is Rich Greenley. He is an arsonist and an accomplice to murder in the case Danny's working
on. Danny's enroute with a S.W.A.T. team and should be here any minute. Catherine and I will make
sure he doesn't slip away." He whispered while he pulled his cell phone out and handed it to Rachel.
"Danny was my last call. Please call him back and tell him Cat and I are armed and …."
Catherine put her fingers to her lips then pointed to the dining room.
Steve turned to look and saw Rich Greenley case the kitchen and dining room. Appearing unarmed, he
stopped and snagged a cookie from the table.
Steve gestured to Catherine to pull open the sliding glass door. He nodded and she pulled open the
door. The commander leapt in front of the open doorway, gun leveled at Greenley's chest. Neither man
said a word.
After a few tense seconds, Greenley swallowed the cookie. "I surrender."
"Good choice." Steve said coldly. He gestured to Catherine. "Take him down, lieutenant."
"Yes sir, a pleasure, sir."
Steve watched Greenley's eyes. "Go ahead, try. I'll double tap you before you lay a hand on her."
The icy tone made Rich's skin crawl so he abandoned the half assed plan he was formulating. He
grunted as Catherine took a hold of his shirt collar and forced him to his knees. She quickly frisked him.
No weapon, no i.d., no nothing.
Not turning his head, Steve asked Rachel, "Does Danny have spare handcuffs or zip ties?"
"Both, I'll get them." Still holding Charlie, she maneuvered around Steve and slipped inside.
"Skinny man!" Charlie pointed to him angrily. "You hurt Puppy!"
"He did?" Catherine asked.
Charlie nodded with tear filled eyes as his mother carried him to the staircase.
Catherine smacked Greenley across the back of his head. "So not cool."
Greenley grimaced. "Little brat."
"You were very wise not to harm him." Steve growled.
Greenley rolled his eyes. "You can't hurt me while you have me in custody."
"True." Catherine sighed. "But he is not a cop and neither am I. But you do belong to us now."
Greenley hung his head in defeat as Rachel came down the stairs with both handcuffs and zip ties.
"Perfect." Catherine took both. She stood their suspect up and cuffed his hands behind his back.
Steve relaxed his stance and came in and slid the dining room glass door closed. "Well, Detective
Williams will be here shortly. Let's get comfortable."
Catherine walked the skinny man to the glass door, turned him to face the room, then had him slide
down to sit on the floor. She doubled zip tied his ankles then quickly made a loop of ties. She secured
one end on the door handle and the other end around Greenley's neck. Comfy?" she asked sweetly.
"Bad man." Charlie declared.
"Yes, he is." Rachel held her son a bit tighter.
"Well, let's get comfortable ourselves." Steve pulled a chair between Greenley and the table and sat
down. "I could go for some coffee."
Catherine smiled and gestured for Rachel to sit with the table between her and their 'guest'. "It's
lukewarm. Nuke it?"
"Would you please." Steve said cordially.
"Charlie and I will make a fresh pot." Rachel said as she got up. Going into the kitchen, she put Charlie
on her hip as she reloaded the coffee maker.
After checking with Steve, Catherine collected the used coffee cups and returned them to the kitchen.
She started to wash them but Rachel stopped her.
"Charlie and I can do this while we wait for the coffee to brew." Rachel said in her regular voice.
Stepping closer to Catherine, she whispered. "I need something to do."
"I understand. I'll get the rest of the dishes." Catherine whispered back. She exited the kitchen and
smiled warmly at Steve who was watching, listening.
With the women busy with their chosen tasks, time he got to work on his. He looked at Greenley. "So,
what was the plan coming here?"
Greenley was silent, staring at the floor with unfocussed eyes.
Steve counted off thirty seconds then kicked Greenley's foot. "Hey! I'm talking to you."
Greenley blinked. "Ah, sorry. What?" He asked nervously.
"I said," Steve spoke deliberately slow. "What was the plan coming here?"
"Ah, I don't know." It came out more like a question than a statement.
Steve shrugged. "Have it your way." He put his foot against Greenley's and started to push Rich's toes
up towards his calf.
Within seconds, their 'guest' was uncomfortable. Involuntarily, he pushed back against the pressure
Steve was applying.
Steve smiled without warmth. "I can break your foot easily." To drive the point home, he doubled the
pressure until Greenley cried out in pain. "Or you can start talking. Your choice."
"Coffee?" Catherine held out the cup for Steve. She smiled warmly when their eyes met.
"Why thank you, my dearest." Steve took the cup and drank. "Delicious. Thank you, Rachel."
The women returned to the table and sat down. "You are most welcome, Steven." Rachel said as she
positioned Charley on her lap. She looked at Catherine who was already sipping her coffee and decided
to do the same.
Steve drained his cup, the hot, caffeinated drink energized him. "Well, shall I break your foot and tear
the ligaments from your ankle like you did to poor Puppy or do you want to start talking?" He applied
just a hair more pressure.
A sharp pain shot up the back of Rich's leg. He squealed and broke out in a cold sweat. "What was the
question?" His voice was strained and tight.
"Catherine, may I please have more coffee?"
"Of course, Commander." Her words were formal but her tone was like honey. She smiled at him as she
filled his cup.
"Thank you, lieutenant. Most kind." He took a long sip and returned his attention to Rich Greenley.
"Last time I'm asking, make me ask again and I AM going to break your foot. What was the plan coming
here?" A push from Steve's foot made Greenley talkative.
"George wanted the detective to just stop. I was to put a device at the bottom of the stairs and wait for
lights out. Then, thirty minutes later, trigger the device. Everyone would have been trapped upstairs."
"And burn to death." Steve finished.
"That was the plan."
Rachel was visibly shaken and pulled Charlie closer. She jumped when Steve's tactical watch went off.
Steve silenced his watch. "Catherine, why don't you and Rachel … "
"And me!" Charlie piped up.
"And Charlie." Steve smiled at the toddler. "Go get Gracie. I'll stay here with our 'guest' and wait until
Danny and his friends arrive."
Catherine nodded and dug the navy car's keys out of her pocket. "C'mon Rachel. I'll feel better when
Grace is with us."
"So will I." Steve and Rachel agreed simultaneously.
