The process of putting together Harry's room was gradual. Upon first entering the space that, just the weekend before Severus had frantically transformed from a guest room to something more suitable for a young child, Harry loudly declared that it was perfect! and the best room ever! He loved the walls that Severus had spent hours painting a refreshing light green. He loved the duvet on the bed that had animated shooting stars sailing across it (which Severus had seen in a shop window in Diagon Alley and hadn't been able to leave without). He even loved the framed photo of himself walking hand-in-hand with Severus that Jules had taken a few weeks before on an outing to the park, and which Severus had tentatively placed on his bedside table.
It was instant and utter relief that washed over Severus hearing those words. The hours of packing the old guest room into the attic, the panic over what colours Harry would like the most, the agonizing over every little detail so that everything would be perfect for the little boy that he had grown to love so dearly seemed to have paid off. He let out a subtle sigh of relief and smiled as he watched Harry speed around the room exclaiming over everything with wonder.
Despite Harry's adoration of his new room and everything in it, on that first day it was actually quite empty. Severus had made sure the essential bed, side table, and wardrobe were there of course. The old grey rug that had serviced the guest room was entirely too rundown and shabby to be kept, but it was easy enough to replace with one that was plush and brightly coloured. Curtains that matched the rug were also acquired. A tall full-length mirror stood framed in the corner, and the rooms window-seat was provided a fluffy cushion for sitting on. But even with all the changes and new additions, it was still obvious that the room was more empty than it should be, something Severus was painfully aware of.
It became something of a personal mission in the weeks that came after Harry's official adoption for Severus to fill up his sons room with everything and anything a child could want. Harry never asked for much, an unfortunate habit that came from his time with the Dursley's, but he did stare longingly at the toys displayed in shop windows, and Severus, ever watchful, bought them without hesitation. It was one of the greatest joys in his life to watch Harry's face light up when the little boy noticed a stuffed lion waiting for him at the breakfast table, or the children's books that had been placed on the shelf near the sitting rooms fire next to Severus's favorite potions texts.
So naturally, when Severus noticed Harry sending longing glances towards children in the park who were playing with their pet dogs, he got him one too.
Hey everyone! It's short, but I'm in the mood for little domestic moments right now. I hope you enjoyed!
