Listen to Billy Joel's "Goodnight my angel" song while reading this plz. That is where I got the inspiration to write this story. I do not own the song or characters in any way. Also, this is my first ever fanfic so feedback is greatly appreciated! Enjoy!

Maglor came running at the sound of the crying twins. Bursting through the door he went quickly to their bed. "Shhh," he cooed, "It will be ok. What happened?" Elros sniffed, "We had a dream you and Uncle Maedhros left us!" "Oh no no no, we will never leave you my little angels." Maglor knew very well this might be a lie. "How about this, I'll sing you a lullaby. Does that sound good?" They both nodded their heads.

Goodnight my angel

Time to close your eyes

And save these questions for another day

I think I know what you've been asking me

I think you know what I've been trying to say

I promise I would never leave you

And you should always know, I never will be far away

Goodnight my angel, now it's time to sleep

And still so many things I want to say

Remember all the songs you sang for me

When we went sailing on an emerald bay

And like a boat out on the ocean

I'm rocking you to sleep

The water's dark and deep inside this father's heart

you'll always be apart of me

Goodnight my angel, now it's time to dream

And dream how wonderful your life will be

Some day a child may cry and if you sing this lullaby

Then in your heart there will always be a part of me

The twins were sound asleep by the end. Maglor gently got up and looked towards the door. Maedhros stood there frowning. "You lead them on brother" Maglor shouldered past him, "I know" he said quietly.

A few hundred years later

"Please don't go!" Elros pleaded. Maedhros continued to ignore them. Maglor went to his two children, both holding back tears. It seemed like only yesterday they were two little elflings wailing about a bad dream and Maglor had to go comfort them. Now they were grown and almost as tall as him with warrior skills surpassing his. "We must go. We will return though, I promise." "You also promised you would never leave us!" Elrond yelled. Maglor was taken aback. Usually Elros was the loud emotional one, but Elrond seemed more distressed than Elros. "I know it's difficult to understand but-" Maglor was cut short by Elrond shouting, "Do not speak to us as if we are children. We know of your stupid oath! YOU PROMISED MAGLOR, YOU PROMISED YOU WOULD NEVER LEAVE!!! YOU WILL NEVER RETURN!" Elrond sobbed. At this Maedhros turned around. Once Elrond realized what he said his eyes widened and he went to silently crying again. "Elrond, what do you mean 'You will never return'?" Maglor asked tentatively. Elrond kept sobbing wiping his tears on his sleeve. "Elrond" Maedhros said sternly. "I-I-I had a dream that-that you and Maedhros l-left and-and never came back" Elrond managed to get out finally with a lot of hiccups in between. Maglor and Maedhros shared a look. "Elrond, it was only a bad dream, nothing more" Maglor tried to say with a comforting smile, but it faltered a bit. Elros was silent through all of this until now, "If Elrond had a dream about it, it will come true." He said quietly. "What do you mean" Maedhros asked. "For years now Elrond would dream about something and it would come true, but until now it has only been small things like rain storms and dinner. But he was never wrong." Elros finished. "And you never thought to tell us about this?!?" Maedhros asked angrily. "It seemed a harmless trick and when it got more serious we were scared you would be mad." Elros explained eyes downcast. Maglor stepped forward and wrapped both of his sons in a hug. "We will come back, I promise, and if we don't then sing our lullaby and I will always be in your heart." Maglor ended with remembering the words of the old lullaby. Both of the twins stayed silent and Maedhros and Maglor after waiting a few moments got onto their horses and rode away. "Goodbye." Elrond whispered.

Elrond came running at the sound of the twins crying. He burst through the door and sat on their bed. "What happened my children?" He questioned. "We had a dream mama disappeared!" Elladan wailed. At that both children cried even louder. Elrond took one twin in each arm and digging up memories of old he began to sing a lullaby. Soft at first, for he was not sure if he remembered the words fully, but slowly his voice grew louder. As he watched his sons another voice seemed to join in singing the lullaby. Elrond smiled painfully at the sound of Maglor's sweet voice once again singing him their lullaby. The twins had fallen asleep long before Elrond stopped singing but Elrond kept on so that he might hear his father's voice one last time.
