Bella woke up gasping for air as her lungs felt like a hot iron was shoved on her throat. Her throat was dry and burning and she struggled to breathe. She was lying on the ground, wet and her body was sore.
"Wha - "She started with a hoarse voice and clutched her chest while she struggled to sit up. Bella froze in place as she felt the erratic beating of her heart.
"Oh... I'm alive" she said in almost a whisper. How long had it been since she last felt her heart beating? That was thirty-five years ago and here she was, clearly alive and blood running in her veins.
"Of course, you are! No thanks to your crazy antics! I can't believe you decided to go cliff diving without me Bella!" A male voice spoke beside her and when she turned her body at the sound, she was greeted by the very much youthful appearance of Jacob Black.
"Jake?" She really needed to get her head together. She was starting to get a headache with all the things that was going on at once. She looked at her old friend intently. It had been a while since she had seen Jake after her family left Forks but she had kept in contact with him after all those years.
The last time that she saw Jake, he was very much older and only had eyes for his imprintee, Julie who he had been married for five years. Totally a contrast from the Jacob she was staring at now who was looking at her like she was the most important thing in the world.
"Thank God I arrived just in time! You nearly drowned out there! What were you thinking?!" He chastised her but she could see the panic and worry reflected in his eyes.
Bella merely shrugged while relishing at the idea of having the need to breathe again. She did not really know what had happened and what caused her to jump. Come to think of it, she tried to remember a time when she was human that she cliff dived on her own. There was none. What was going on? Why was she back in La Push with a younger version of Jacob and a human version of her?
She slowly stood up and Jacob was instantly there to steady her when her body started to sway. She couldn't believe that she was human again. Bella wasn't sure if she welcomed the drastic change. She had been used to being a vampire that she was having a hard time adjusting back to her clumsy human self and not to mention, her body was too exhausted from what happened.
"You're in no condition to walk. Here... "Before Bella could ask what he was doing, he lifted her up and was now carrying her. She tried to protest but Jacob was having none of it.
"I'm getting you back to the house to get you dried before you could get sick." Jacob looked up to the sky where dark clouds were starting to form. Looks like a storm was coming.
Bella was having a hard time trying to keep her eyes open. She couldn't even think straight about exactly what happened to her. She barely registered about another male voice talking to Jacob about the pack continuing their patrol and going back to the hospital for Harry. The name was familiar.
Oh. Harry Clearwater. Bella tried hard to think. She was suddenly remembering something from her past. Harry Clearwater had a heart attack and was brought to a hospital but he had died then. She was suddenly getting an idea of the timeline that she was stuck in. Harry had died a few months before her high school graduation. She realized she couldn't tell Jacob this. She couldn't tell him that Harry would have not made it through the night without having to explain to Jacob why she knew it. It wouldn't do anyone any good as well. There was nothing that she or the pack would have been able to do.
Bella kept silent then. Instead, she spent the time trying to remember what where the other things that happened on this timeline. What was it in this past that brought her here? Or was she just brought here in random?
There was really nothing uneventful that she could remember. She only remembered Harry because of Sue, Harry's wife. Because in her past and somewhere in this future, Sue was going to marry her father, Charlie.
Charlie. Her father was still alive here. Bella was suddenly aching to see her father again. She missed him. Charlie was the one human aside from Sue that she got to keep her ties after her transition. Renee had moved on with her life and she wouldn't have been able to take it but Charlie did. Even when he didn't understand what she became and why she chose to be changed. She never really told her exactly what she was because of the law but in the long run, she knew Charlie knew. What with Sue in the tribal council, the stories he got to hear and him finding out that his step kids would turn into giant wolves. Even without Charlie's cop instinct, he would have easily put two and two together but he didn't say anything. He never confronted her with her decision but only asked her if she was happy and she truly was and she knew that Charlie accepted her for what she was.
Charlie was a steady reminder of the humanity that she lost and he kept in contact with her even after she left Forks to move on. Bella would look forward to his calls until the tragic accident that killed him and Sue. Bella had beaten herself up because of that. It was during that time that guilt had overtaken her. Guilty of her immortality, that she was alive and her father wasn't. Even after ten years, she still felt that guilt and she knew that with a vampires unchanging nature, that guilt would stay with her forever. Maybe, eventually it would lessen after fifty years... one hundred... five hundred... but it would always be there...
Sometimes she blamed herself. If she had stayed in Forks, would she have been able to prevent their deaths? Now that she was brought here in the past though, knowing what she knows... would she be able to prevent it now? The idea was suddenly appealing to her. If she changed something in this past, would it affect her future? If she would be able to prevent the accident, would death try to reclaim his life and have him die another way? She wasn't sure but Bella had to try. The problem was, the accident was not yet set to happen for another twenty-five years and for sure she wasn't going to allow herself to stay in this past for that long.
She decided that the first thing she needed to do was to find out how she got there in the first place and how to get back to her future, then maybe she can leave Charlie with something, a warning, a sign, anything that would help prevent Charlie and Sue's death. Hopefully that would be enough.
Bella noticed Jacob already setting her down on the floor. The room was dark and she realized that they were back in Jacob's house.
"Let me get you some dry clothes" Jacob went to his room and Bella dragged herself near the couch where she let her head rest. Exhaustion was something she never had to worry about when she was a vampire. Sure, she felt drained whenever she uses her mental shield but it never manifested physically. Suddenly, lying down in a bed seems such an appealing idea.
"This one is too large but it'll have to do" Jacob handed her a large shirt and he was awkwardly looking at the door.
"I... ah... I'll let you change" Jacob started to leave but Bella stopped him.
"No... wait... just... I think I'll just take a nap here... just give me a few minutes. I need to restart my brain" she just laid the shirt on top of her. Her eyes growing heavier by the minute.
Jacob shrugged and went to sit beside her. The last thing she noticed was Jacob snoring before she fell into a dreamless sleep.
xxxxxxxx
Bella was woken by the dryness of her throat. She rubbed her eyes and saw that it was already much darker outside, from the window. Jacob was still sleeping beside her and making sure not to wake him up, she slowly got to her feet and looked for something to drink.
Bella savored the taste of ordinary water in her mouth, something that she had forgotten what it truly tastes like and how it affected her body after so many years of living off with animal blood. Yes, there were instances that she had to consume food while keeping up human appearances but the taste was never there. Even now, when water tastes as bland as it can be, it felt refreshing, especially after nearly drowning.
While trying to quench her thirst, she thought how advantageous it was to be able to sleep as a human. Those few hours of unconsciousness that allowed you to at least take a pause at everything, it was such a great opportunity that she was able to feel that again after so many years. She did not regret being a vampire but sometimes, she did miss the perks of being able to sleep.
The sound of a car coming up the driveway brought her back to the present and she saw Jacob waking up from the noise as Billy was wheeled in by a larger man who Bella remembered as the former Alpha, Sam.
She was about to greet them but saw Billy's heartbroken expression.
"Oh Billy..." Bella knew it was going to happen but she still felt sad. She had tried to not get emotional when someone they knew passed ever since her father and Sue died because she knew that was going to happen more frequently as time would pass and all the people that she knew would die as she remains her immortal self.
Jacob went to his father and held his hand in support.
"Where's Charlie?" Suddenly, she couldn't wait to see Charlie. She wanted to see her father alive again.
"He's... in the hospital with Sue... there were a lot of arrangements that needed to be done" Jacob moved to assist father but Billy just wheeled himself towards his room, clearly wanting to be alone.
"I'm going back to the hospital" Sam told them and hastily left.
It was a few moments before any one of them spoke.
"I should get going. I need to be there when my dad gets home" She wanted to leave right away. Bella already spent the whole afternoon in the reservation and she didn't know if she'd been there much longer after she woke up in her past body. She needed to see her father and her vampire family. They had always trusted her judgement about continuing to keep her ties with the wolves because of her friendship with Jacob but she knew they would worry if she doesn't get back soon.
"All right. Stay here. I'll go get your truck" Jacob volunteered and Bella was left alone with a mourning Billy in his room. She saw the shirt that Jacob gave her lying on the ground and she went ahead and just folded It and placed it on the coffee table. Her clothes where still damp from earlier but she was going home anyway. She might as well just clean up back at her house.
The familiar sound of her truck broke the silence a few minutes later and Bella felt a sense of nostalgia. She has always had a soft spot for her truck no matter how old it was. She was sad to see it go when she eventually had to change cars after her graduation but she had fond memories of it.
Bella got in and Jacob stayed behind the wheel as he insisted to drive her home. She decided not to argue and let him be as she let her eyes wander outside the window towards the familiar road back to her home.
She'd stopped coming back to Forks when her father died because for her, there was no point anyway. Of course, there was still Jacob and the pack but she had kept her visits minimal or at least when it's really necessarily. She didn't want to trigger any more of the tribe children to phase because of their presence and she knew that the pack actually preferred it that way.
Eventually, she would return to Forks with her family to live there again but it wasn't going to be for a few more decades, where no one would be able to remember them.
Jacob had one hand on the wheel while his other was around her, keeping her closer to his side which Bella was grateful. He was always warm because of his wolf nature. They stayed silent all throughout the ride.
She let her mind wander towards her past, trying to remember the timeline, this timeline. She wanted to remember what had happened during these times but was having a hard time doing so. She wasn't really that all surprised.
Bella had been warned that after she would be turned, her human memories would slowly start to fade. It was a different story when it comes to remembering people. It hasn't really been that long but those moments like where she was and what she did one fine day so many years ago was something that wasn't necessary to be retained. Although, cliff diving and nearly drowning in the reservation should have been something that she would have memories of but for the life of her, she couldn't remember a thing. Or maybe the unpleasantness of a near death experience was something she didn't want to retain in her vampire memories and she chose to leave it behind. She let it go for now when she realized they had already arrived at their destination.
Jacob lingered in the driver's seat.
"Will you be heading home after this?" Bella asked and Jacob shook his head.
"I have to go on patrol with the guys. She's still out there and I promised you, we wouldn't let that leech get anywhere near you" I blinked back a surprise.
"I beg your pardon? Who's after me?" Bella bit her lips. She wasn't supposed to say that out loud. Jacob was looking at her like she had grown two heads but it suddenly turned into worry.
"Are you sure you didn't hit your head while you were in the water?"
"No, I'm fine. Will you be, okay?" she tried to cover her mistake and Jacob finally smiled. Bella realized that now was not the right time to tell Jacob about what's happening to her or if she should tell him at all. Maybe if she got stuck in this past far longer that she would have liked then she'd tell him. He was her friend after all.
"You don't have to worry about us Bella. You just get yourself some rest." He said confidently and finally open the door to his side but his body suddenly went rigid and his smiling face turned up into disgust.
"Shit! Vampire" He closed the door and he was visibly shaking. Bella didn't understand what was going on. Was there a threat nearby? Surely Jacob was already familiar with the scent of her family by now or was it someone else? Was it the vampire who he claims was after her that he was talking about?
Bella was suddenly not liking the predicament that she was in right now. Not when an unknown threat was outside and Jacob looking like he was about to phase into a wolf inside the confines of her truck. Oh, how she missed her indestructible body.
"Damn it! What to do?! Confront the leech or get Bella to safety? No! Get Bella to safety first" He looked around while muttering to himself and Bella was frowning at Jacob. Shouldn't he be asking her what she wants to do as well?
Jacob went and gunned the engine and started to back away from the driveway when the headlights caught an object in the dark.
"Hey Jake! Stop!" Bella told him.
"We need to get you out of here!" he wasn't listening and started to drive away from the house.
"That's Carlisle's car! I need to get back!" She recognized the car immediately! Her human memories may be muddled but she would remember that car anywhere because it was always that same car that Carlisle chooses to drive every single time they move on.
"JACOB BLACK, STOP THE DAMN CAR!" the car screeched to a stop. Bella was suddenly pissed at her friend. She already told her that she saw Carlisle's car. Why didn't he even bother to stop and consider her words and trust her?
"It could be a trap" He gritted his teeth, clearly trying to keep himself calm.
"No, it's not." Bella calmly said. She had always trusted her instinct and that was her adoptive father and her coven leader that could be in her house waiting for her. Besides, the Cullens live in Forks, this shouldn't be a surprise to Jacob to see them around town or dropping by her house.
If there was someone that can help her understand what's going on with her or help her get back to her future, it would be Carlisle and the rest of her family. She would sound crazy once she explains to them where she came from but they have always been good with crazy, they were vampires.
"I need to get back"
"No" Bella was surprised at Jacob's hostility.
"Excuse me?" Oh, she heard it right but she couldn't understand why it was his answer in the first place.
"You get yourself back Bella. After all you've been through! After they abandoned you and left you broken and in pieces, you just go running back to their arms, the first chance you get as if nothing ever happened!"
Jacob did not hide his hatred and he looked at her like she had betrayed him. He didn't wait for her response as he stormed out of her car and into the night, leaving Bella all alone.
Bella tried to replay what he said word for word, trying to make sense of it because to her, it did not make sense. How could the Cullens have abandoned her? They have always been there for her. When they left Forks, she left with them. No one was left behind.
This kept running through her head as she switched towards the driver's side and started to take her truck back. There was no indication that anyone was home when she got back to her house. Carlisle's car was still park but she was pretty sure that someone was inside.
She really needed to see her family.
Bella closed the door behind her as soon as she entered her house. The house was still dark but before she could turn on the lights, the house was suddenly illuminated and she covered her eyes at the sudden change.
"Bella?" A musical voice spoke with uncertainty. Bella blinked twice and when her eyes finally adjusted, her relief was instantaneous when she saw the small vampire in front of her.
"Alice! Am I glad to see you!" She hurled herself towards her sister, forgetting how hard a vampire's body was, she was going to probably get a bruise later. The Cullens was the only thing in this past that was exactly the same as in her future.
Alice hugged her back and when they parted, she was looking at Bella with relief, guilt, confusion and worry.
"You look..." Alice did not need to continue. She probably looked like she got run over by a truck. She feels that way too.
"That bad huh?" She joked.
"Yes, but you're alive. Don't get me wrong. I am just as relieved to know that, but how are you alive?" Alice had that familiar frown on her face whenever there was something in her vision that she couldn't understand.
"Care to elaborate?" Bella asked while she let herself get seated on the couch, patting the empty space beside her for Alice to sit. She held on to Alice's hand.
"I saw you fall into the water."
"Oh that" She wasn't sure how to explain it to her. Bella still wasn't able to figure out what made her jump since she was only aware of it after. Jacob did say she shouldn't have been cliff diving alone so maybe there was really a plan for them to do that activity together?
"I did not fall... I jumped. I was cliff diving. Isn't that a recreational activity nowadays?" She told her. It was the most very basic explanation of what happened. Maybe there wasn't really anything to it at all. Maybe that was just the reason. They were just trying to have fun and Bella decided to not wait for Jacob and do it alone.
Alice looked at her in disbelief. She groaned. She's been getting that kind of look from people lately. First with Jacob, now with Alice.
"But I did not see you come out of the water!" Alice was still confused.
"Really? Jacob was there." At least that's what she knew since when she woke up, Jacob was upset with her for jumping on her own and nearly drowning if he wasn't able to get to her on time.
"Jacob?"
"Yeah. Jacob Black? My best friend who turns into a wolf?" At her explanation, Alice just stared at her.
"Your best friend turns into a wolf?" Bella finally realized that this must be probably the time that Alice was not yet familiar with them. This explains why she was not familiar with how the wolves affect her vision.
"Jacob just recently became one but they're the ones that Carlisle made a treaty a long time ago together with the Quileute people. The wolves also affect your vision. You won't be able to see them. That's probably why you didn't see me get out of the water when Jacob was with me." They were only able to find out about it at a much later time but since it was something that everyone would eventually know, why not tell Alice all about it now. She knew how much it annoyed Alice when her visions would fail her.
"Oh Bella... we shouldn't have left you! I told him this was all a mistake, but no! He insisted that this was for your own good! Now look what's going on! You look like hell and your friends with the next supernatural being you could find!"
"Hey! They're not all that bad!" Bella defended but suddenly she was feeling uneasy. There were those words again. Jacob had said it and Alice was now saying it too. The Cullens had left and somehow, she doesn't remember anything about it.
"You tell me. In fact, why don't you tell me from the beginning..." Alice voice turned into almost a whisper as if she was afraid of what Bella was going to say next.
"What happened after we left Bella?"
"I..." Bella opened her mouth but no words came out. Bella didn't know the answer to that question. What could she tell Alice? She wanted to tell her about the Bella from the future but that doesn't seem to be the important thing at the moment. Something had happened during this past that Bella wanted so badly to know. Why did Jacob act that way towards the Cullens and why was Alice feeling sorry for leaving and where was the rest of the family? Where was he?
A thought came to mind and Bella was looking at Alice strangely.
"Alice, before I answer your question. I need you to do me a favor."
"What is it?" She replied hesitantly.
"Can you tell me everything about what happened to me when I met your family just like you're trying to help someone remember her memories?" She tentatively asked and Alice raised her eyebrow.
"Do you have amnesia Bella?" Alice was now looking at her worriedly.
"Not really..." She lied "But please... humor me here... It's been a long day and I just... I need this right now... please" She pleaded and Alice finally sighed.
"All right"
Bella could not have braced herself to what she heard next because as soon as Alice started her story about her and the Cullens, she realized that everything was wrong, so very, very wrong.
