Halloween was not a holiday to be missed for the grimm gang. And with the newest addition to the Burkhardt family, it was destined to be an adorable one.
Catherine Marie was just a few months old, but that didn't stop Adalind from putting her in themed clothes.
The entire month of October featured the newborn wearing onesies with various Autumn and Halloween themed decorations on them.
More than once, Nick had entered the home to discover his youngest child resembled a bowl of candy.
"This is the only time in my entire life I've actually wanted to pick up candy corn." Nick chuckled, lifted and cradled the baby, who was wearing a white garment with the before mentioned candies all over it, in his arms.
"We want to put a jack o 'lantern costume on Kitty, put her in a wagon with Raven, and go trick or treating with them. I just know we would get lots of candy. But Mom said it was a bad idea." Diana grumbled.
Kitty was the given nickname to Catherine Marie. Raven was the name of the larger than most black cat the family had adopted. Said cat adored the baby and was more often than not seen lurking close to where the child was. If not normally snuggled right up against her.
"Both of your fathers, and all of your uncles, know better than anybody how reckless people can be on Halloween." Adalind gave a pointed look at her firstborn. "I know you think your powers could keep both the cat and your sister safely in the wagon, but I just don't want to take the chance of something going wrong."
"We can still take Kitty with us trick or treating." Nick suggested. "Your mom and I will just be holding her the entire time."
As luck would have it, while investigating a robbery/vandalism incident where someone had knocked over a display while their accomplice stole merchandise from a shop, Nick saw a black onesie with a hood that had cat ears on it. Further inspection revealed coverings for the hands and feet, with pink shaped to look like cat paws, and a tail attached to the bottom.
He knew his wife would be thrilled to dress their daughter in the outfit, so he had immediately purchased the item.
Just as Nick suspected, the moment he showed it to Adalind, she squealed with delight, then proceeded to cover his face with kisses, lingering for a longer, and enjoyable, amount of time on his lips.
"All you would have to do is put on a black leotard and pointed ears and you could go as a mama cat with her kittens." Nick suggested.
"We could dress all of the kids as different animals, then the adults can dress in khaki shorts and shirts and go as zookeepers. It sure feels like that's what we do as parents anyway." Monroe commented when he and Nick were on the phone that evening and the topic of costumes came up. "My kids have all decided to go out and howl at the moon every night, to get in touch with their wolf side. Something my father apparently told them to do. I think he's trying to make sure they take after the blutbad side more than the fuschbau one. But they're four. Their wesen side won't come out for another six or seven years."
Nick covered his phone to muffle his chuckle.
Having to take care of a newborn, Adalind had more of an interest to be comfortable, rather than elegant or sexy.
So when Halloween rolled around, the hexenbiest chose to wear a loose fitting long black dress, black tennis shoes, and a large black pointed hat.
"I'm a lazy witch." She explained. "Carrying around my black cat."
Nick, following his wife's lead, put on a pair of black jeans, a black sweater, his black boots and announced, "I'm her shadow."
"You two are ridiculous." Monroe told them. He and Rosalee had decided to go with the animal theme, except the kids were all dressed as lions and tigers, and the parents were dressed as circus themed trainers. They had even "borrowed" Kelly, so they could have two lions and two tigers.
Sean Renard had been able to go trick or treating with the group, so both he and Diana were dressed as elegant regency era themed vampires.
Her father's costume worked very well to Diana's advantage. She was able to sneak plenty of candy into her bag while the women handing it out were busy ogling and drooling over the extremely tall vampire.
Trick or treat night was a success.
Proving that miracles could happen at Halloween, baby Kitty slept soundly in her mother's arms the entire time, never once being woken by the shrieks and screams that popped up during the group's walk.
All of the kids were delighted about the amount of candy they had gotten, especially Diana, whose large bag was close to overflowing.
"The kids have enough candy to last them till next Halloween." Monroe snarked.
"With our kids? More like three days." Rosalee retorted.
"Some of it should last longer than that." Nick pointed out. "I doubt any of the kids are going to be eager for the apples, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and religious pamphlets some of those houses gave out." The grimm shook his head. "They might as well have signs in their yard saying; "Go ahead and throw eggs and toilet paper at us."
Renard shook his head. "I should call some of the uniforms now and tell them to be at those houses in the morning. Save us all some time later."
The families headed back to their homes. Diana went with Sean, and Kelly stayed with Monroe and Rosalee to play some more with the triplets, leaving Nick and Adalind alone with their baby girl.
"She did well for her first Halloween." Adalind said softly, gazing at the sleeping form in the crib.
Nick, wrapping his arms tightly around his wife said, "Of course, she's one of us. Halloween is a special time for her. Plus, she spent the entire night in your arms, what's not to love about that?"
Adalind just shook her head and grinned at her husband's comment.
The two stood there a moment, looking at the little bundle of life they had created.
"Time flies by so fast." Adalind said sadly. "She's already had her first Halloween. So many of her first will go by in an instant."
"And we'll cherish every one of them." Nick pressed his lips along Adalind's face to comfort her. "And we'll create lots of wonderful memories. There are many years ahead of us to spend with our baby girl, with all of our kids. She won't remember tonight, but she'll always feel how much we love her."
Adalind nodded, tears in her eyes. She looked fondly at her baby and whispered, "Happy first Halloween, my little Kitty."
