Adalind sometimes felt bad for Nick that his birthday and father's day were so close together, sometimes being on the same day.
When she mentioned it to Nick, he swore that he didn't mind.
"I don't need extra presents. All I care about is spending as much time with my family as possible. And that happens on days when it's not my birthday, so everyday is both my birthday and Father's day."
Whenever anyone asked what Nick wanted, he would honestly say he could not think of a thing. No object that existed could make him any happier than spending the day with his friends and family, and the night alone with his beautiful wife.
It's what Monroe explained to his mother when she asked.
"You mentioned Nick's birthday is coming up? Have you made reservations at a nice restaurant for the event?"
"Nick prefers something relaxed and casual with friends and family for his birthdays." Monroe told his mother. "Life is pretty stressful, for all of us really, and the way Nick chooses to relax is with his family doing nothing."
"I suppose I can understand that. Oh! Does that mean a big backyard barbeque?"
"Pretty much. It's what he prefers."
Hearing the word "Barbeque" Bert looked up from reading his newspaper. "A cookout?! Does Nick have a preference? You know my pork ribs are the best."
"I think Adalind already bought steak for Nick's birthday. She has a marinade for them that Nick loves."
"Well, I'll still be happy to man the grill. You know, so you boys can relax."
"I think that's a lovely idea! Let Nick enjoy his birthday."
Monroe suspected that he was going to be unable to change his parents' minds. So he notified the others.
"He is going to be the oldest father there." Nick texted. "Letting him be in charge of the grill is only right."
Everything that could or should be made ahead of time was made.
Between taking care of their triplets, running the spice shop, and helping Nick catch naughty wesen, not to mention that Monroe still worked on time pieces, neither he or Rosalee thought to check on exactly what Alice had made to take to Nick's birthday celebration.
It wasn't until they were loading in the car to go over that they saw the very large black forest cake.
"Didn't you tell your mother that Diana was making red velvet cake for Nick's birthday?" Rosalee hissed to her husband.
"I forgot." He whispered back, greatly concerned for the drama that was about to unfold. The little girl prided herself on making things and loved doing stuff to make her stepfather happy.
The couple feared the royal hexenbiest would not take too kindly to someone treading on her turf.
Nick loved sweets, so there was no fear of there being too much. But there was a great fear of there being a silent war between those in attendance who insisted on contributing.
With Adalind just a few months from her due date, Nick was highly protective of her and insisted that she do as little as possible. So that meant that Diana answered the door, since Nick was busy getting Kelly ready.
"You made a cake, too?"
"It's a tradition to serve black forest cake for special occasions." Alice explained.
To Monroe and Rosalee's relief, the girl shrugged and said, "Okay. You can place it next to mine on the shelf in the garage, so it stays cool."
As it happened, the blutbaden were not the only ones to bring an extra cake.
Bud and Phoebe Wurstner brought a strawberry cake big enough to feed an army.
When the third cake was brought in, Monroe noticed Trubel quickly take out her phone. He became suspicious when Sergeant Wu entered after everyone else had arrived, carrying a shopping bag.
Suspicion grew when he and Trubel insisted on bringing out the cake when it was time.
Everyone laughed when they saw all three cakes carried out by Hank, Wu, and Trubel. Each baked good topped with so many candles, there wasn't an inch without.
Nick rolled his eyes at his friends' trick, but was laughing just as much as everyone else.
"Diana, how about giving me a little help?"
A gust of wind came through, blowing out all of the candles at once.
Kelly, crawling into his father's lap, asked, "What you wish for, daddy?"
Nick didn't say it out loud, but his only wish was that Adalind's labor with her third baby would go a lot smoother than her labor with her first two.
But of course it was not something he could tell a four year old. Luckily Adalind, who knew what Nick was thinking, saved the moment by saying, "You're not supposed to tell, sweety. Or it won't come true."
So no one would have to wait an eternity to get a piece of cake, Diana used her powers again and removed all of the candles at once. And then made sure her mother and stepfather got the biggest pieces.
"It really is quite the extraordinary family you have here." Bert commented.
"Trust me, I know." Nick grinned. "I'm certain I'm the luckiest man in the world."
