Neal Cassidy had been told by a judge not to go within fifty feet of Emma Swan and Killian Jones.
The last time he had gotten near them, Neal had wound up with a broken jaw, cracked ribs, a long stay in the hospital followed by a longer stay in a jail cell.
His stepmother had forbidden his father from spending a cent on Neal's legal fees and bail. The most Neal got was to be allowed to still live in the guest house on his father's estate.
But anything else Neal wanted, he had to earn on his own. No more free handouts.
His father even expected him to work eight hours a day.
He was still employed at his fathers business, but he had to sit at a desk, doing paperwork, where responsible people could keep an eye on him. He was not allowed to do nothing anymore expecting to still receive money. And he was warned that he could be fired if he refused to do what he was told.
Above everything else, he was warned that if he didn't leave Emma and Killian alone, he would end up back in jail, and the fancy guest house would not be available to him when he got out.
And yet, when Neal heard that Emma and Killian were engaged, he still chose to follow them.
He watched in boiling rage as Emma showed off her shiny new engagement ring to all of her friends.
The only thing shining brighter than the diamond on her finger, was the smile on her face.
Hiding in a darkened corner of the pub, Neal was seething. He wished more than anything that he could go up and punch that grin off of Killian's face.
Once Upon a Time
"He proposed on his boat." Emma beamed. "By the moonlight."
"That sounds romantically perfect for you." Mary Margaret praised.
Everyone hugged Emma and Killian, congratulating them on their engagement.
Among all of the well wishes, Emma saw Regina and Killian speaking quietly off to the side.
"You're not trying to talk Killian into getting a prenup, are you?" August asked in a light tone to show he was mostly joking.
"I know better than to waste my time." Regina replied. "This one here," She motioned her hand at Killian. "would give everything to Emma without hesitation. Even if they weren't getting married."
"She's just suggesting that I write out my will in the case that Emma and I should die together." Killian explained.
"I'm not saying it's likely, but in the case that the two of them just pass away, there needs to be a plan in place on what happens to what they leave behind." Regina stated.
"Just leave everything to David and Mary Margaret. They'll make sure it all goes to charity." August suggested.
"It is a viable plan." Regina confirmed. "And if there should be any children in the future, no one would argue that those two would be perfect guardians."
"I'm wondering if I should be offended, since Graham, Belle, and I were not considered." Ruby piped up with a grin.
Jefferson rolled his eyes. You weren't considered for the same reason August and I were not, or Robin and Regina; Mary Margaret is Emma's best friend, and David is Killian's."
Of course everyone knew that. Everyone also knew that David and Mary Margaret were extremely goody two shoes who always believed in going above and beyond to do the right thing.
It was seriously cavity inducing how sweet those two were.
Case in point, Mary Margaret's enthusiasm for planning Emma and Killian's wedding.
"We have so many things to consider. The flowers. The venue. Do you want a theme? And of course, we should try on dresses right away! Finding the perfect one will take time."
"Actually, all that isn't really necessary." Emma explained with a sheepish look. "Killian sailed us to Jamaica. It only took a few days for us to get everything we needed to have a quiet ceremony on the beach."
"The two of you eloped!"
All of their friends knew that Killian was going to propose to Emma shortly after David and Mary Margaret's wedding. But no one could have predicted that Killian would steal away with their friend and get married without them present.
Emma and Killian worried that Neal would try to disrupt any ceremony the couple might have. So they decided to sail away and get married on the beach of a tropical island by a licensed officiant.
"I promise we weren't trying to upstage you or take any attention from you." Emma assured her best friend.
"Oh, I know," Mary Margaret waved away the blonde's concern. "We all suspected Killian was going to propose. I was delighted to see that you had someone who loved you and put you first. You both deserve to be happy. I'm just a little disappointed that I won't be able to help with a beautiful wedding for you."
"We didn't want to have to worry about someone trying to destroy our big day. Killian and I love each other. That's all that matters to us." Emma explained.
"If a big wedding is important to you, my swan, we can still have one. I'm sure we can find a way to counteract any trouble Neal might give us."
"One, I don't care about a big wedding. I've told you. I just want to be with the man I love. And two, I'm not Swan anymore. I'm Mrs. Jones."
"You will always be my swan. Till death does us part."
Emma and Killian looked at one another adoringly and melted into each other's arms, vowing with a silent promise that they would always love as strongly in a hundred years as they did in that moment.
Graham leaned over and whispered to Ruby and Belle, "I think Killian and Emma might steal the title of sickening sweet couple from David and Mary Margaret."
His two lovely lasses agreed with him.
In his dark corner, Neal seethed with rage. He gripped his beer mug so tight he nearly cracked it.
He was seriously considering hitting Killian over the head with it when he felt a tight grip on his arm.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here? You're violating the restraining order, Cassidy." Robin declared with an evil grin he must have learned from Regina.
Hearing that Neal was close by, Killian took a step forward with his fist balled up.
Emma quickly stepped in front of him. "He's not worth the risk of you getting into trouble, baby."
"He's going back to jail." David assured his friend. "Don't risk spending a night in the cell beside him. You have a beautiful wife to sleep beside. I doubt you want to be away from her."
Killian relaxed his fist and refocused on Emma, who cupped his jaw with her hand, shot a menacing glare at Neal, then kissed her husband passionately right in front of everyone in the pub.
It was the clearest signal that could be sent. What Neal and Emma had was long gone. She had moved on with her life. Given her heart to one who was more worthy. Someone who was not foolish enough to ever let it go.
Neal had lost.
Killian had won.
And Emma was finally sure of where she belonged.
Safe, happy, and loved in the arms of Killian, her husband.
