A/N: Hey, so yeah long time no update as in like a Two and a half years with no update. I'm genuinely sorry about that, but life happens. I've eventually acquired a little more free time now that I am in college. But I make no promises on updates. I'll try to keep it to a weekly to a bi-weekly schedule but yeah there won't be any promises. To all the people who liked what they saw from the first few chapters, thank you that motivation actually made me decide to pull this off the ideas list. So, without further ado the next chapter. Enjoy.
"So let me get this straight, we're going to cram two years of school into two-ish months?" asked Percy.
Him and Merlin were sitting at the small dining table in the comfort of their home in Little Whinging. Merlin looked across the table at the ruffled demigod.
"Yup"
"And you want me to do this?"
"Yup."
"You know you're insane, right?"
"Yup"
Percy slammed his fist down on the table, causing a great shake all across as Merlin spilt some of his tea on his suit. "Could you give me some details maybe? Possibly something other than a yup?" growled the younger boy. Merlin let out a long-exasperated sigh.
"I really liked this suit. But yes, you're right it's just been a while since I've had a true student." He waved his hands over the suit, erasing all trace them at there had ever been a stain. Percy's eyes widened a little bit but nothing to any extreme. After all he had fought monsters and watched gods make fools of themselves. Speaking of fools, I wonder how Mr. D is doing.
"He's doing fine."
Percy's breath hitched for a second. "Come again?" He looked Merlin over, before thinking again much more clearly in his mind. It's almost like he can hear me think.
"It's because I can."
Now Percy was concerned. There weren't very many people who can read thoughts. Even as a demigod he knew few that could read minds, discounting a direct thought to a god themselves. "So what you did there..."
Merlin finished his coffee and cut off the boy. "Yes, yes and yes. I did indeed 'read your mind' or better yet I used my mind to push past the barriers into yours. Speaking of which they are very weak by the way. I see why the Fates called you a seaweed brain."
Percy's jaw set. He was now on edge more than ever, his battle instincts were tingling and this man now had him on the edge of his seat.
Go fu..
"Language Percy you don't want the whole world to hear you," Merlin chuckled at his own joke.
"How are you doing that?"
"Jedi mind trick"
"Not funny."
Merlin clasped his hands and leaned back in his chair. "And people act like just because I'm a wizard I'm out of touch, and in the wizarding world we call it Occlumency. The practice of shielding one's minds from an attack from another or an Legilimens attack." Percy nodded afraid and intrigued by this new power. Merlin lost is casual leaned back look and leaned forward with a glare that screamed only business. "That will also be the very first thing I teach you Percy. I'm saying this now and I don't say this lightly, demigods are powerful, more powerful than I'd say 99% of the wizarding world. But there is a top 1%. And what they lack in power they make up for in cunning do you hear me. Don't take a wizard lightly. They can't over power you but they can outsmart you."
By the end of Merlin's speech, Percy was enthralled. I mean who wouldn't be? "So will you be teaching me this magic or are you just gonna stand by as I get mind-raped?" Merlin let out a slight chuckle. "You don't beat around the bush do, huh? And yes I'm going to teach it to you. But it's a difficult process. It's also very painful."
"So when do we start?"
"In 10," Merlin stated calmly. "10 what?"
"9."
"Shiiiiiittt." Percy steeled his brain. Preparing everything he was able to mentally.
"8."
He tried cutting out everything and just thinking of the void that was his subconscious. He discussed on not letting his mind wander.
"7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2..."
Percy let out a deep breath he didn't realize he was holding.
"1."
"Legilimens." As the words left Merlin's mouth, Percy was mentally assaulted. The pain was excruciating it felt like somebody was tearing his head in two. He saw events unfold in his life. He saw the people he loved, memories passing by. The sharp, swearing pain continued to his head as he was forced to relive some of the most transitive events in his life. The betrayal of Luke. Kronos grabbing him and sending him back in time. He fought with everything he had until, finally, relief washed over him.
"I'm sorry I really am, there isn't a nicer way to do it." Merlin started, standing up grabbing Percy off the ground putting him back in his chair. Percy instantly reached for his pocket, pulling out Riptide all in one fluid motion.
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't slice your throat right now." Percy was raging, the sound of the water creaking in the pipes moaning. The windows blew open as a stunned Merlin slowly backed away from the demigod. "Percy I'm sorry, but listen there isn't any other way. We can't allow for the wizarding world and the Greeks to find out about one another. Wizards are a damn prideful race and they won't take kindly to being knocked down a notch in the food chain. We have to seal away everything from the others. We can't allow people to know anything. It's either that or we have a full war on our hands, and time itself changes. We're meddling in things that shouldn't be meddled with. Time is a very loose concept Percy. Plus do you want people who you don't know or who could kill you to try and read your mind?"
Percy capped his sword and put it away. He thought about everything that Merlin had said. It all made sense, at least sort of. If I allow these worlds to collide, it's the end. So Percy reluctantly sat down but not without a final warning.
"You ever do that without me preparing, I'll be shoving this sword through your stones."
"You can try kid."
"Don't call me kid, old man." Percy retorted. "Ow, harsh. You're cutting deep their man. Ok so other than that are you ready to start again?"
Percy sighed, it seemed it was becoming a common trend. "As ready as I'll ever be." Merlin pulled out a wand. "I'm going to try to give you a demonstration." He waved over some stray paper from the kitchen counter over to the table. He waved over the paper until it balled up and resembled a brain.
"So, this is your brain," Merlin said gesturing to the ball of paper. "And this is what happens when I use the spell." As he said that the ball unraveled revealing a flattened piece of paper. The paper floated down until it landed in front of Percy. He looked down at it and noticed it had writing on it. "Percy is a brat. Real clever," commented the demigod.
"I thought so myself," Merlin waved the paper back into a ball. "This what we want." As he said that another piece of parchment was waved over, and it formed what seemed to be a thin almost brick like wall.
"Now this is what happens when you are able to block it." He waved his wand and suddenly the paper bent for a second before firing back an invisible force.
"So we want it to act like a shield essentially?" asked Percy.
"Not a shield, more like a slingshot. This way anybody trying to enter your mind will be hit by the recoil of the spell."
The demigod nodded a couple times before he reeled his thoughts together. "Any advice?"
"This best way to fend off an attack is to visualize your mind scape; we first need to set up defenses there to prevent people from trying to break their way in."
"Ok Master Yoda, how do I do that?"
"Simple we enter your mind and find it," said Merlin stroking his chin. "Lie down on the couch."
Percy walked over, "Is this the part were I tell you how I feel."
Merlin's face hardened for a minute, "Lose the attitude, this is serious. Treat it as you should."
Percy sighed defeated and closed his eyes. "Ok, ok now what do I look for?"
"Visualize all your inner ideals, it shouldn't be difficult, treat it like meditation. Once you find yourself there, you'll now."
Percy sat on the couch, and fell into a meditative state. Ok so what is home for me? If I weremeditate that's where I would go right? Then it came to him. The call of the sea. He went to the first place he would call his happy place. It kept getting louder, before it was a wave on the beach and now it was the roaring winds of the coast. The sound of seagulls and the feeling of sand between his toes. Percy gasped awake as he realized he wasn't on the in the house but on the beach of Montauk. He could see it, the cabin him and his mom stayed at the beach running along the coastline. The oceans waters running along the sand. Seagulls hopping around.
"So this is it? It's honestly peaceful."
Percy jumped out of his skin before he whirled around to a smug Merlin.
"Yeah this is home to me anyway. It's where me and my mom used to go to getaway," he said thinking about fonder times.
"Well it sure beats the shit weather in England. But now back to business. You see you're mind scape now defend it."
"How did you even get in here?"
"I know my dashing looks may cause you to overlook it, but I am indeed a very powerful wizard remember that."
"If I didn't know any better, I would say you could give Zeus a run for his money," Percy mumbled.
Merlin fake gagged, "Never mind I retract my previous statement."
Percy chuckled before he became stoic. He turned towards the beach and closed his eyes, imagining what sort of defense he would come up with. Out in the water, bubbles started to furiously rise out of the ocean. Merlin could barely make out bumps rising in different spots of the water as finally a giant blue dragon head rose out of the water. It had a somewhat squashed face with long whisker like appendages hanging from its face. It raised its head and let out a loud earth shaking roar.
"Uuuuuuuhhhhh...what the fuck is that?" Merlin's mouth was gaping like a fish as he was trynna regain his composure.
Percy had that trademark smirk on as he turned to Merlin, "Merlin meet Gyarados, Gyarados meet Merlin." It huffed at him before shooting a blast of water out of its mouth at the wizard. Merlin was still stuck in his stupor preventing him from reacting before it was too late. He was blasted across the sand as gallons of water drilled him. Gyarados chuffed again before submerging itself back in the water.
"What the hell man?"
Percy was was crying tears of joy as he laughed at the sprawled out figure. "That was for...oh my gods I can't breathe...that was for mind raping me without warning."
Merlin got up dusting the shells and sand of himself. "Stupid brat, and his stupid fish," grumbles the soaked wizard. Right about that time another jet of water rushed out at him.
"SORRY, smart fish jeez."
The Gyarados had its heading poking out before he nodded and dove back under. Merlin waved a hand over himself drying his clothes.
"So, what now?" Percy quizzed.
"Well now you have to find we're your memories are stored and if I had to guess I would start there." Merlin was pointing to the lighthouse in the distance.
"I'll leave you to do that yourself, plus I don't want to piss off your dragon..fish thing." And with that he popped out of existence.
Alright let's get started.
Percy started walking towards the lighthouse in the distance. It was roughly a quarter mile away, and as he walked he started creating defenses. He stopped for a second before looking at a tree and decided to make a group of Nymphs that lived in the trees. After all, they were some of the scariest things he had to face. Hot angry women were always terrifying.
He continued walking placing the occasional monster or weapon he saw fit. There was a small pack of hellhounds wandering around and a set of very pissed of androids that he had seen in Terminator. He had finally made his way to the base of the Lighthouse after creating The Predator from the movie of its namesake. The alien had already gone invisible when Percy had made his way to the base of the stairs. He decided to see if he could walk to the top of it when he noticed something peculiar on the walls. They seemed to be playing his memories as of being projected onto the wall.
There was him fighting Alecto in the museum, him arriving at camp. As he progressed up the stairs they seemed to continue on throughout his life. He was nearing the top when he had came to a door. A rusted iron door stood, proud and large at the top of the stairs.
"Well first time for everything," he mused somberly.
He pushed the door open when he was suddenly blinded before it died down. A large whirlpool of water was formed in the room. The spiraling mass was swaying across the sphere it had taken form in. It sat inthe middle with a bright beacon of light taking form in the center. It continued to sway and splash around as Percy got an idea of what this had to be.
"So this is what my soul looks like huh," he thought. "I guess it fits, Child if the Sea and all."
He closed the door behind him and imagined the biggest set of chains he could to cross over the door. There was no way he was gonna let somebody try to access this. He started to make his way back down periodically placing defenses as he went. When he was satisfied he thought of leaving his mindscape.
Back in the Real World
"Damn kid what you are doing in there."
Merlin was pacing the room, periodically waving his wand and checking the time. Percy had been out for two hours now in his somewhat comatose state. When the young demigod finally came to.
He stood up slowly with that shit eating grin that he always had. Percy knew it was a little over kill but was excited nonetheless, after all he had a big secret to protect. Still maybe the Terminator had been a little too much, or... possibly the herd of velociraptors that he left in there.
"Well kid, how does it look in there?"
"Let's just say it's well protected..." he replied with a lopsided grin.
Merlin shuddered. "Well the water lizard was a nice touch, but I think you should be fine. Now onward."
He started walking towards the garage door, he opened it and waved Percy over. Percy followed the wizard through the door, and his ADHD lost it.
The garage had been enchanted to be larger on the inside then the outside. It was a large stone chamber with a high ceiling with four separate stations, one in each corner of the room. There was a station with a chalkboard and a cauldron set with something simmering inside it. There was a station set up more like a training ground with dummies laying out around with various objects and weights laying around.
There was an area set up like a general classroom and there tucked away in the back corner was a small garden with cages of...chickens?
"What are the chickens for?"
"Well you see Percy you're gonna be transforming them. There's a magic called transfiguration and you essentially turn objects into other objects, albeit temporarily." Merlin hastily added noticing Percy's look of disgust.
"Magic is so weird."
"Says the kid who can create earthquakes and hurricanes."
"Touché."
"Well, back on topic then. Before we even get into anything practical, I want you to read all of these." Merlin windlessly summoned a stack of roughly 8 textbooks. Percy's shoulders slumped and his legs almost buckled at the sight. "You know that I have only barely passed any of my classes up to this point in my life. Not to mention the severe dyslexia that I have."
"You're right and I think that I have a solution to this. But I guess I should have you start somewhere else for the moment. Ok new plan." The books vanished and a chair took their place as Merlin sat down. "Ok, so you know that wizards use wands right. Well, this creates a pitfall for many of them. They become reliant on their wands. They typically melt down if they lose their wands. I don't want you to fall into this reliance. I want to start you on wandless magic."
"And how do you propose that we do that?"
"Since you're a demigod Percy, you have a naturally more significant link than most people to their magic. You were able to build an occlumency shield that can stand up to just about every wizard in the span of a few hours. That's unheard of. I have never met anybody capable of doing that. I was planning to at least set aside three days for that but no matter, the quicker the better. But what I want you to do is to learn how to control your elemental magic into your ready magic. What does it feel like when you control water?"
"It kinda feels like a knot in my stomach, its like a tug in my gut."
"Perfect, so I want you to replicate that feeling but instead of feeling for an outward source of connection such as water, I want you to instead start reaching further into that feeling and let it trickle out your hands."
Percy nodded his head, closed his eyes and started to try to reach out to that familiar feeling. He stood there for a second just recalling what he usually felt, and there! Just out of reach so it pulled harder and harder when he felt like he had a grasp on it, he tried to force it to leave his hand. It Was about this time a massive shockwave of energy shot out of Percy and into the surrounding area. Percy got up from where he had been sprawled out on the floor. Merlin offered a hand and Percy reluctantly took it.
"What in the holy Hephaestus hit me." Percy was rubbing his stomach.
"So, what happened there is instead of trying to concentrate just a small amount of magic out, you forced about a 1/3 of it out at once. Now so that I don't have to create another shield around you, pull only a small amount out this time. Maintain your focus about what you want to do and how you want to go about it."
Percy locked in and focused back into what he was doing. He was gonna try everything he could to make this possible. This was the first step to get stronger he had to eventually get back to America, to the future. He had to see his friends again. His mom, Annabeth, Grover, Tyson, the Camp, he just had to make it back. Then he remembered it, the first capture the flag game. The way when he stepped into water. The way it just surged through him. The feeling he was invincible. He channeled this emotion throughout his body before the tugging on his gut became prominent. Then instead of trying to tame the ocean, he grasped in his mind what would only be a handful. It let it flow down his arms and drip out his hands.
"Good one kid."
Percy opened his eyes. There flowing into the form was a formless blue energy falling out his hands and disappearing as it hit the floor. He held his hand up to his face. Then it suddenly disappeared just as soon as it came back. "Nicely done Percy, you have a lot of magic in your reserves as well. Probably not enough to stand up to an auror but about as much as an adult wizard. But that's besides the point, now what I want you to do is to try and access it easier. Make it easier it should be readily accessible. While you work on this, I am going to go shopping," Merlin said.
"Shopping?" Percy asked.
"Indeed, there are a few things that I have to take care off." Merlin had a look on his face that just said he wasn't going to continue on what he was doing.
"OK…then leave me in the dark."
"I plan on it."
And with that he vanished with a loud "crack".
Percy's face became determined. He closed his eyes and began getting back into his work.
With Merlin
The well-hidden wizard made his way through the alleys of the city. He was currently in the heart of Athens, Greece. The old city had once hosted a large number of human magic users throughout the centuries and was still a stronghold of magical knowledge. He made his way to the Temple of Zeus. Once a proud structure, marble columns littered the surrounding area as tourists milled about. He made his way off to the side of the structure tow what many would consider a normal column. He walked up to it under disillusionment and tapped the bottom of the column with his wand. It suddenly rumbled before it shimmered out of existence, revealing a set of stairs that led down. He walked down the stairs. As the top of his head disappeared the column shimmered back into existence just as some tourists came around the corner.
He exited the stairs into what could only be considered a bazaar of sorts as all sorts of magical people wandered about from marble store to store. Each store was built into a cavernous area as a fake sky was in place above them. He walked past a pair of wizards arguing over the price of phoenix ash and he ducked into what many would consider a less than reputable alley. The marble alley slowly opened up to a series of stores selling everything from books on the Dark Arts to Flesh Eating Slug Repellant. He sidestepped a woman standing outside a sketchy inn talking to a man who could be considered a grandad by many and stepped inside a small shop with a small sign in a dingy window that contrasted heavily from the beige colored marble. The sign said "Sica's Services and Wizarding Wares." He stepped inside to see a gray-haired lady with glasses in her middle years polishing several rings under one of the heads of a Greek Chimera. The store looked like it was a hurricane of books and knick-knacks as many questionable items laid around the store. She laid down the ring she was cleaning and quickly hit a button that turned the see-through glass of the counter into a opaque marble counter. Merlin was certainly sure he had seen something that looked suspiciously like unicorn blood vanish behind the counter as he shimmered into existence. "And what may Lady Sica do for you sir?"
"I am looking for a First Edition Copy of the Arbatel of Magick. Her eyes widened at his request. "I certainly wouldn't carry a book containing such information in this store. A book made illegal by the ICW would put me in Azkaban for life…" She trailed off as Merlin dropped a small chest of Galleons that he had pulled out of his coat pocket.
"I know that's why I want to take it off your hands for you. Its only one of three copies left and I know you have it here. My sources told me as much." Merlin hands formed into a steeple as he finished.
"Your sources must be wrong. Even if I had such a book, it wouldn't be for sale."
"20,000 Galleons."
"I don't have it."
"30,000."
She hesitated before she choked out, "Its…not for sale."
"40,000 final offer."
This time she audibly gulped. That's what she typically made in a year and a half. I mean what good was the book doing gathering dust in her hidden chest anyway.
"Fine, but I don't know you are or where you got it." She said before she turned her back on him and left into a backroom.
Merlin breathed a sigh of relief. He was very glad he didn't have to use the Mist to try and convince her to give it to him.
She finally returned with a book that she was levitating to avoid touching it. She gently laid it on the table and grabbed the chest of gold and the two extra accompanying sacks of gold that he had laid out.
She bowed low, thinking she just earned her highest paying customer. Better to treat him with respect if he was gonna throw around that much money. "Anything, else?"
He glanced around the store before his eyes landed on an unassuming book. "How much for the book," he said jerking his head towards the dragonhide book laying on the shelf beside him.
She glanced at it nervously. That book had sat on herself for decades nobody had been able to find a use for it. After all it was dangerous to mess around with that kind of ritual magic. "For you sir, 1000 galleons." He reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a sack that should not have fit in a suit pocket.
"Give me that as well."
She nodded her head handed the book to him. He stored the two tomes away in his expanded suit pocket.
"Well this certainly has been a profitable experience for the two of us," Merlin said. "But I was never here." And before the old woman could even react he had his wand pointed between her eyes.
"Obliviate."
