Kurt was surprised to see Blaine sitting in one of the chairs outside the school office, waiting for his turn, when he came out of his interview with Sue. He'd been asked to stay if he had time, and since the seat next to Blaine was empty—actually, they all were. Blaine was the only one there—he sat down beside him. "What are you doing here?" he whispered, leaning in close.

A pleasant scent wafted off of Kurt as he leaned into Blaine's space, and the other boy felt like he was going to faint. The scent wasn't overpowering, but the hormones it induced in him were. He felt heat and blood rushing to all the wrong places in his body, and he had to fight hard to keep himself under control. He crossed his legs just a little tighter and placed his hands gently in his lap. "I'm interviewing for the director spot," he whispered back, doing his best to keep his voice even. Kurt didn't need to know he was struggling.

"You would be really great for it," Kurt said, feeling his stomach drop. Blaine deserved the job after the letdown he'd experienced in California. Even though it went against everything he was feeling, Kurt hoped he didn't get the position if it meant Blaine could have it. Then, he remembered something that made his heart soar with hope again. "Sue mentioned co-directors to me."

A grin spread across Blaine's face. He dreaded competing against Kurt, but maybe he wouldn't have to. "Really? That sounds pretty awesome."

Kurt nodded. "I thought so, too."

Just then, Kitty—Sue's secretary—came out into the hall. "Blaine Anderson? Sue's ready for you."

"Good luck," Kurt whispered, giving him a tentative pat on the back as Blaine rose and walked away. From the corner of his eye, he watched him as he went. If anyone asked, he'd say he was assessing his friend for nerves. To himself, he'd say he was staring at his ass. He couldn't exactly help himself. He tried many times in the past and failed. So, he was just going to accept that something in him was attracted to Blaine's round, perky tush.

As he waited for Blaine to return, Kurt's foot tapped against the floor. He thought about his interview. It had gone really well. Sue had remembered him from high school, much to his amazement, and she'd also heard about his off-Broadway show. They'd actually spent a lot of time talking about things totally unrelated to the job, but eventually, they had gotten down to the nitty gritty. Rehearsals were set to start the last week of September. They would be three days a week until the third week of November, dress rehearsal week. Then, they'd rehearse every day, and there would be three shows that week: Friday night, Saturday and Sunday matinee. Each rehearsal would be four hours, and the show was up to the director. Or to the co-directors.

Initially, upon hearing that Sue might hire two candidates, Kurt's heart had dropped. This was the one opportunity he had to work on the stage again, and he wanted to have full creative license. He didn't want someone else's ideas getting in the way. However, knowing now that it could be Blaine as his co-director, he hoped they would both get it. The play would just be an excuse to spend more time together.

"Kurt, Sue would like to see you in her office again."

Kitty's voice pulled him out of his reverie, and he rose and followed her back to Sue's office again. When Kitty pushed open the door and stepped aside, Kurt could see that Blaine was still sitting in one of the chairs across from her desk, looking at the door with his wide, sparkling smile.

"Kurt, have a seat," Sue said, gesturing toward the chair next to Blaine. "Mr. Anderson, here, tells me the two of you already know one another."

"We do," Kurt nodded. He plopped down in the chair and looked at Blaine curiously. "We work together at The Lima News."

"Wonderful. Well, I don't want to be here longer than I have to be, so I'll cut to the chase. When I saw that the two of you had applied, I thought I had an impossible decision on my hands. You both have an extensive history with the drama department here at McKinley, and you both have degrees pertaining to entertainment and the stage. So, I talked to the board, and they're willing to give you both the job. As long as you'll both take it and agree to work together, of course."

The two boys looked at one another then back at Sue. "We'll do it," they said in unison, busting into a fit of giggles at the jinx.

Sue gave the two of them a funny look. "Now, if the two of you are dating or something, I need to know. It won't keep you from getting the job, but I do have to make sure HR knows."

"What?" Kurt asked, his eyes going wide, cutting off his laugh. "We-we-we—No. We-we're not dating."

"No. We're not," Blaine reassured her.

"Well, maybe you should consider it. You seem to have a lot of fun together. You're certainly cute together." She paused, cocking her head to one side as she studied them. "Yes… Kurt… Blaine… Your ship name could be Klaine." She looked them both in the eye then, smiling like she'd just thought of the best thing in the world. "Well, you two start rehearsals in about 10 days. You are in charge of picking the production; just let me know what show you choose so I can run it past the board before you start auditioning these kids next week. Grab paperwork from Kitty to fill out so you get your paychecks, and we'll see you around school soon."

"Thank you. Thanks," the two of them muttered, getting up and leaving the room. They dropped by Kitty's desk and took the paperwork she offered them, waving good night to her as they left. It wasn't until they were standing in the hallway again that they looked at one another and, all at once, hugged one another, hopping up and down on their toes.

"I am so excited," Kurt squeaked when they pulled back. "This is going to be the best school production yet. I already know what show I want to do."

"Me, too!" Blaine exclaimed, glee written all over his face. "I can't believe we're going to be co-directors."

"When we get outside, count of three, do you want to share our show idea? I'm pretty sure we'll be loud about it."

"Of course!" Blaine nodded in agreement, following Kurt toward the big front doors of the school.

They had barely set foot outside when they both looked at one another, the words falling from their lips without a countdown. "Dear Evan Hansen!"
