By the middle of October, the boys had managed to put together a stellar cast of kids who wanted to be there and were excited to work on the musical. They had rehearsals running smoothly, and the kids were learning all the music at a rapid pace. Everything was balmy and easy, and they loved their three-nights-a-week rehearsals.
Blaine had revealed, after auditions, that he could play the piano, and it had been decided that for the show, Blaine would play piano for all the numbers. In the meantime, while the kids were still learning the lyrics, they'd decided to use recorded music.
So, one evening after rehearsal, Kurt left to copy a few papers in the office. He came back into the auditorium just in time to see Blaine press "play" on the stereo they were using, and the sounds of Disappear began to echo through the room. Blaine, standing in the middle of the stage with his back to the seats, started to sing.
Blaine:
No one deserves to be forgotten
No one deserves to fade away
Kurt:
Even if you've always been that
barely in the background kind of guy
and even if you're somebody who can't
escape the feeling that the world's
passed you by.
If you never get around to doing some
remarkable thing
As Kurt began to sing, Blaine whirled around, surprised. The weight of Kurt's words hit him moments later, and he beckoned Kurt up onto the stage with him as he continued to sing.
Blaine:
That doesn't mean that you're not
worth remembering
Kurt:
Think of the people who need to know
Blaine:
They need to know
Kurt (Blaine):
So you need to show them
(I need to show them)
Blaine pulled Kurt toward him, grabbing both his hands and looking into his eyes as they launched into the chorus together.
Both:
That no one deserves to be forgotten
No one deserves to fade away
No one should flicker out or have
any doubt that it matters that they
are here
Blaine:
No one deserves
Kurt:
No one deserves
Both:
To disappear
To disappear
Disappear
Throwing his arms wide, Blaine launched into the next part, loving the familiar line that hailed back to another song in the show. He kept a tight grip on Kurt's hand while he did it, though, and Kurt couldn't hold back the smile that passed over his face, even as tiny tears began to squeeze out of his eyes.
Blaine:
When you're falling in a forest and
there's nobody around
Kurt:
All you want is for somebody to find you
Both:
You're falling in a forest and when
you hit the ground
Kurt:
All you need is for somebody to find you
Blaine:
No one deserves to be
Both:
Forgotten
No one deserves to fade away
Blaine:
No one should flicker out
Kurt:
Or have any doubt
Both:
That it matters that they are here
At that moment, Kurt turned, pulling Blaine back to him. He grabbed hold of Blaine's hand again, and the two of them sank to their knees, staring deeply into each other's eyes. Blaine had little tears oozing down his cheeks as well, and he clutched their clasped hands to his heart as their voices grew quieter, finishing out the song.
Blaine:
No one deserves
Kurt:
No one deserves
Both:
To disappear
To disappear
Disappear
No one deserves to be forgotten
No one deserves to fade away
As the last notes faded away, the two of them stayed on their knees, facing one another, looking into each other's eyes. They were both out of breath from singing their hearts out, and they panted together for a moment, just watching, soaking up the other's emotions into their souls, eager to take their pain away.
Blaine felt the urge to lean in, like something was tugging him ever closer to Kurt and his delicious looking mouth. He knew he was staring at Kurt's lips, wanting to taste them with his tongue. He leaned in, and just as he was about to close his eyes, he felt something press against his lips: Kurt's finger.
"Not yet," Kurt whispered. "I want to go to my house."
"But your dad…"
"No. My house. The old Berry place. It's nearly finished."
Blaine smiled softly, internally screaming with excitement that Kurt wanted to let him into his humble sanctuary that he'd been working so hard on over the last several months. "Okay," he whispered back.
