That Saturday, at 9:00 in the morning, Blaine showed up at Burt's ready to work. On the way over, he had worried that perhaps he should have been honest about how much or little experience he had with DIY projects. He was confident, though, that he could figure it out. His heart sank a little when he saw the jackhammer on the lawn.
"Hey," Kurt said, waving when he saw Blaine crossing the street. "Ready to work?"
"Of course," Blaine said, putting on his best smile to hide his nerves. "What's first?"
"We've got to get this old driveway up so we can lay the foundation for all the cement I bought for it."
"How do we do that?"
"Jackhammer it. Get it loose. Then, we can pry more of it out."
"Okay. Um, are you going to run that?"
"I thought I'd let you. You're so handy, after all."
Blaine chuckled uncomfortably. "Okay. I can try."
"Great! I've got to go in and talk to my dad for a minute. I'll be right back. Hard hats are right there by the jackhammer. Thanks, Blaine." Then, he headed inside, positioning himself to look out the window and watch. The last thing he wanted was to have him get hurt. If he got into trouble, Kurt would know immediately and could run out and save him. He wanted to see if he'd been telling the truth, however. Maybe he was...
Taking a deep breath, Blaine went over and put on a hard hat. Then, he looked at the jackhammer. It looked… Terrifying. Heavy. Powerful. Dangerous. Sharp. He wanted nothing to do with it. He had to try, though. He'd gotten himself into this mess, and now, he had to see it through.
Bending down, he tried to pick the jackhammer up. He strained, lifting with all he had. It moved a few inches off the ground, but that was all. He couldn't lift it any higher.
Determined, he tried again. Same luck.
He tried once more. This time, it only moved an inch before falling back to the earth.
Sighing, he sat down on the ground beside it, looking at it forlornly.
It wasn't long before Kurt came back outside. "How's it going? Something wrong?"
Blaine looked at him and pouted. "I have to tell you something."
"Really? What's that?" Kurt came and sat down across from him, criss-cross applesauce.
"I may… Well, I lied to you. I have very little DIY experience. I can put together IKEA furniture, and that's about it."
Kurt chuckled. "You don't say?"
"You're laughing at me!"
"I'm not. I promise. I do have to ask, though… Why have you told me so many times how wonderful you are at DIY?"
Blaine sighed. "Our first day, on our first assignment, you were checking Elliot out. I thought that was the kind of guy you liked, and I wanted you to like me so much. So, I tried to be that kind of guy. I thought that's what you liked."
This time, Kurt outwardly snorted. "Oh, my gosh! You noticed that?"
"Of course! I notice everything about you!"
Kurt's face immediately softened. "I know you do. You're so sweet like that."
"You-you think I'm sweet?"
He nodded. "Yeah. And…"
"And?"
"And I have to tell you something so important." Kurt took a deep breath. "Blaine, I wanted to tell you this a few weeks ago. Hell, a few months ago. I couldn't because I was still lost in the darkness that Ryan brought with him. I couldn't see how you could ever want me when I was such a… Now, though… Now, you've saved me. You've brought light back into my life for the first time in so many months. I can't tell you how alive I feel now. I feel like every breath I take around you is as fresh as spring. It's amazing. I can't describe it wholly. I just… I know that I… I love you, Blaine. I want to be with you."
For a moment, Blaine didn't speak. He just blinked at Kurt, not sure if he could get the words out past the emotion coursing through him. Finally, he whispered, "I love you, too. I feel alive around you, Kurt. You make me feel like I am right for someone, that I can be the man someone needs."
"If you—If you'd like to, I'd like to be your-your boyfriend."
Blaine nodded. "Yeah. I-I'd like that. Boyfriends."
The two of them leaned in, and their lips met in a soft, sweet kiss, one that expressed all the emotion they felt in that moment, all the desire and want that was finally realized in that one moment.
When they pulled back, they looked deeply into each other's eyes as they whispered in tandem, "Boyfriends."
