"King?" Luz asked.

The former king of demons, current king of Luz's heart, made a whining noise.

"King" Another voice spoke now, it was that of … The Girlfriend.

The demon turned away from the pair further, not even trying to hide his emotions in this moment of betrayal.

The witches looked to one another; a bit unsure of what to do. Why was king acting this way? They had done nothing but try to learn more from the human diary.

Luz looked back to the little demon-

King's eyes were now looking at them- but instead of at them directly, his eyes were cast downward at interlaced fingers.

Luz had a sudden thought. Maybe her friend wanted to say something in private?

"Amity-" Luz began, speaking to her girlfriend while still looking at the disgruntled demon, "Will you wait here for a moment?"

"Of course." The other witch spoke dutifully, as though she had been put on a mission, "I'll continue to collect information."

"Thank you." Luz turned her head to find herself centimeters from the other witch, their lips merely a fairy's length away.

There was stillness between them, as neither felt they could moved- yet they wanted to. But instead of moving apart, there was a pull to close that small gap between them. A kiss would be absolutely …magical.

Luz felt herself breathe finally, feeling a tingle in her cheeks as she wondered if Amity could feel that she had.

It would explain why the other's eyelids fluttered so lightly-

Why she-

Thump

The noise ripped the two witches apart from their trance, the mutuel spell they had cast upon each other.

Luz turned away to see King, the demon's little legs were stomping away. The human got up swiftly, easily catching up with the little one just as he enter the hall, "King!"

"What!?"

"Woe." Luz took a step back, surprised by the harsh tone, "Are you okay? You haven't been acting like yourself all this week."

King huffed, "Like you don't know." He looked up at his friend. But she truly did not seem to know. He took a deep breath. Now that it was just him and Luz here, outside of the earshot of Amity, it all felt silly, "I know." King confessed, "It was like this with Willow and Gus..."

Luz listened on, realization dawning.

"You've been spending so much time with Amity lately." King admitted, "Not that I'm jealous or anything! It's just…"

It was true, she had really been spending a lot of time with Amity. It just felt so nice to be with the other witch. But that didn't mean that she didn't care about her friends anymore-

Her family.

"I'm sorry King." Luz kneeled to meet her friend, "I have been spending a lot of time with her." She turned her head to look back inside the room where the other witch was working intently. Amity seemed to be jotting something down, looking back up quickly toward the projection cast onto the wall.

"You love her."

King's blunt words almost caused Luz to lose her balance, "Love" Her voice cracked, "Wow, that's a- Um" It sounded like such a strong word to use.

They hadn't used that word before. Luz cleared her throat, taking note of Kings expectant expression. Was he waiting for her to confirm it?

Why?

Despite the front King put up, saying things like:

I didn't miss you at all.

Not that I'm jealous.

The young demon was sentimental at heart, soft and loving. He enjoyed listening to stories of romance, though he pretended not to. So it made sense why he was curious. But most of all, he cared about Luz.

And Luz cared about him. She loved everyone she had come to know on the Burning Isles: King, Eda, Willow, and Gus. She loved her mother. And of course, "I do love Amity." Luz was surprised with how sure her words sounded, her voice held no hesitation, "And you know what King?"

"What?"

"I love you too, buddy."

King was caught off guard by this confession, "You aren't bad yourself, human." His words seemed harsh, but his tone conveyed another emotion entirely. It made Luz smile.

The two of them had become like siblings. And-

"Nothing will change that." Luz confirmed, she held out her arms and the young demon fell into them.

They shared a long and comforting embrace. She hoped King would remember her words, to see how what she said was true.

"So many kinds of love can exist in our life at once, see. We love each other as family, like how I love my Mama and Eda. And Amity is another important part of my life. I love her. I love her as a friend, like Gus and Willow, that will never change. But I also love her in another way too."

King made a promise to himself, he would try to remember- Though this witch had taken Luz's heart, it didn't mean that he wasn't still in there too.

Sniff

"That's beautiful, kid." A voice came from the hall.

It was unmistakably, "Eda!"

"How long have you been listening?!" Luz exclaimed, watching the older woman wipe away a tear.

The owl lady crossed her arms, seeming to ponder for a few moments, "For about as long as her I think." She pointed one of her talon-like fingernails towards the door.

Aw, Crud.

Luz really didn't want to turn around- did she really have to? She knew who would be standing there.

Finally conceding, the human turned her head to find, standing there as expected, "Amity."

The witch was silhouetted by the light from the room behind her. Even though her face was cast in shadow it was still easy to tell her cheeks held a beet red tint to them. That was to be expected.

But what Luz had not been expecting were her eyes, just below these golden eyes was something that glistened like gems-

Amity was crying.

Luz opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She couldn't say anything. She had already spoken enough it seemed.

And just as with their confession over a week ago, Amity was able to speak first, "I'm sorry. I have to go."

And just like that, she was gone.

"Hey, Boots!" Eda called after her, "You forgot your-" She looked into the room, to see library books, a bag, shoes, a cat palisman "-everything!" But Amity was already out of ear shot, "Eh, she won't get far without shoes." The owl lady shook her head, looking down at Luz who was now in a fetal position on the floor. The human had retreated completely into her hoodie. She was in no way ready to move, "I'll check up on her. Take your time to collect your thoughts."

A million thoughts ran through Luz's mind.

How much did she hear?

What if she misunderstood what I meant?

It was too soon.

Amity doesn't feel the same way.

I embarrassed her.

"I- this wasn't how things were supposed to go …again."

Eda bent down, resting a hand on the distressed girl's head, "Or is it?"

"What do you mean?"

"Who's to say this isn't exactly how everything was meant to go?" Eda smiled as she saw her human peek an eye out from under the fabric.

"Amity running away." Luz noted.

"Fiddlesticks" Eda waved her hand, brushing it off. "How about you talk to her."

Luz slowly nodded; she knew she had to. But more so, she wanted too.

And Eda saw that too, "Good." She straitened herself up, it was time to see where Boots had gone.

She had a feeling things would be just fine.

Young love was a lot like wild magic. Both were free, not contained to one type. They both held power, sometimes for outcomes of good and other times not. But most of all, the way to understand them both was to listen.
