I drove kind of recklessly, but Rose drove even faster on our way to school, so it's not like I was being careless. When I arrived at the house Alices car was already parked in the driveway. And so were my parents and their angry faces. "Oh my God! This is where you live!" Mel exclaimed.

"Yep," I peeped, shrinking back into my seat under their glare.

"Cool!" Mel got out of the car quickly, surveying the large modernised house surrounded by forest.

"You get any bears or mountain lions?"

"Hmmm?" I blanched. How could she know?

"Have you ever seen one?" she followed up.

"Oh right. No."

I got out of the car too and listened closely to mom and dad who had their backs turned to me now and we're talking only loud enough so vampire hearing could pick up. "You're not completely indestructible Renesmee! You were driving like a maniac!" he whispers shouted.

"You're only ten years old. I taught you how to drive what? Like twice!" My mom followed up. At the same time, they turned to face us, this time with small smiles covering their face, to welcome my guest.

"Mel right?" Dad asks politely.

She stood their mouth agape with brain dead sounds coming out all distorted. "Mel?" I ask, checking she isn't having a stroke. But from the way dad is trying not to laugh, he clearly finds whatever she's thinking amusing. Mom on the other hand isn't a huge fan of her ogling.

In fact, she pulls him down by the neck smashing her lips to his. They don't even care that we're there. I'm so embarrassed by my weird family. I pull Mel away, past my Aunts and Uncles, stopping at Rose and taking her into a tight hug, giving her back the keys. Then straight to the kitchen with Mel in tow where I know I'll find Grandma Esme.

"Grandma!" I exclaim and fall into her arms.

"Renesmee dear," she said embracing me back. "Hello Mel, I'm Esme." Her sweet like honey voice enchanted Mel and she smiled back widely.

"You have a really great house," she said back ever so politely.

"Thank you. I take a lot of care in the details."

"Well, it paid off because it's beautiful."

"Well aren't you just the charmer. Renesmee do you want to show your guest around?"

"Sure." I mean it's not like I only know where dads room, Alices room, living room and kitchen. I take her up the stairs and turn to the left.

"Esme's so nice," Mel says.

"She's the best."

"Is she like the mother figure to you."

"mmm, more like a grandmother I think. Anyway, here is someone's bedroom, I think."

This makes her laugh. "You don't know what's in there?"

"No, I've only been here two days or less."

"I thought you were staying with them since your parents passed last fall?"

"Oh yeah," crap, "I meant two days metaphorically. Like 'huh' 6 months, wow it really feels like only two days."

"Hahaha okay, weirdo. So there is a room with a door," she rolls her eyes.

I play along, "Yeah, and down the corridor is another room with a door,"

"Lovely," she says placing an accent on her pronunciation.

"Then we go back to the top of the stairs and two the left of the glass is my Aun- Alice's room, then to the right is Edwards." We walk back down the stairs, and just like this morning, all my family is waiting there like zombies.

Mel kind of tenses as we walk down the stairs at the sight of all these people - vampires -. "Hello. I don't know if you know me," Mel starts, "I go to school with you, I'm a sophomore."

"Sure!" Alice exclaimed coming forward and taking Mel into a hug when we reach the bottom, "I've seen your art mural that your class did on the Callaghan building. it's really cool!"

"Oh, thanks!"

A silence that too a vampire would have only seemed like a millisecond but 10 seconds to a human swept through the room. "Okay," I rocked back on my heels. Why did I say yes to her coming over? I don't even know what to do. Can I just tell her to leave? Or is that rude?

"Why don't you two go to my room. It's basically yours now anyway."

"Thanks, da-Edward." What is wrong with me. I never use to mess up like this with mom around other people.

--

Mel ended up staying until 9 and then her dad picked her up. We got pizza and she got to know mom a bit more. But what she was most excited about was the fact that the room we were in use to be dads.

After I walked her out and she left with her dad, I turned back to the house to find everyone smiling at me. Then they all start talking and commenting and while I couldn't hear anything because they were all talking over each other, it was nice. It was family. At that point, I can hear Carlise's car 400m away driving up the isolated strip of road to the house.

I had a successful hangout, and it felt euphoric to know I was or t least got to act like a normal kid. When he stepped out of the car, I ran to him and swung my arms around his neck. "Hello Renesmee," he beamed.

"Hi, Grandpa! How was the hospital?"

"One of the doctor's wives went into labour, so I told him I'd cover his shift."

"That's nice of you."

"It was just the right thing to do," he said softly.

"I had a friend come over this afternoon. her name was Mel."

He looked around nervously, scanning his family for what I assume is an explanation of Mel's current whereabouts.

"Nobody ate her dear," Esme laughed. "She left 10 minutes ago."

He smiled back at her, with so much love and adoration. I speed back to mom and dad and they place me between them. Showering me with love and kisses. "Stop guys."

"We're just trying to remind ourselves that we love you, your a good kid and didn't drive like a reckless maniac."

"You know what let's just keep vibing the first part of that because the second's thing's history."

"Ness, I'm happy to teach you how to drive, god knows I would never ask your mother to teach you."

"Edward, I can't even get hurt anymore."

"It's the pedestrians I'm worried about."

"Well, at least I don't drive 100km an hour despite the protests of the person in the car whose life your endangering."

"Love, you know I would never do anything hurt you," he whispered and kissed mums forehead.

"Really? Port Angeles doesn't ring any bells."

"It wasn't you who I was trying to kill."

"I know love." Mum soothes and kisses him back.

"Seriously can you guys please cool it. I'm going to dry heave. Maybe everyone else can ignore it, but nope. Not me. Your mom and your dad and you need to put the love aside for a bit."

And at that, everyone joined into an orchestra of laughter.
