Chapter 15
Rory POV
When we'd returned from the Vineyard, Logan had been true to his word. He'd met with Mitchum and had told how much I'd struggled during the summer with him being gone and my parents moving to Boston. Mitchum had agreed to keep him local until at least at Christmas.
When school started back, Logan had moved into an apartment on campus. I spent more time there then I did at my townhouse. I had started to feel at home at Logan's. We'd developed a nice little rhythm. We'd get up in the mornings, have coffee and breakfast, read the paper and then we'd head out and grab another cup on our way to class. During the day, in between classes if we had time, we'd meet at the pub for lunch before we had afternoon classes. Then in the evening we'd either go out for dinner (whether it was just the two of us or with friends) then we'd go back to the apartment and curl up on the couch and find something to watch. It was nice that Logan and I had gotten into a rhythm, but I sometimes wondered if he wanted me here less.
I was sitting on the couch in Logan's apartment with a pizza and my political science notes reviewing for a test when my cell rang. I sat my notebook on the coffee table and grabbed my cell seeing that it was Honor. I quickly answered. "Hey Honor." I said.
"Hey Ror. You sound like your studying." She said.
"I am. Poly Sci test tomorrow. Everything okay?" I said. She sounded off.
"Umm…I need to find Logan. It's grandad. He's in the hospital." Honor said.
"Oh my god. Is he okay?" I said.
"I'm not sure. Anyway, I'm stuck in California and Dad is stuck in London so neither of us can get to him. So I need for Logan to go to the hospital and see what's going on." Honor said.
I looked at the clock. "Logan's still in class for another two hours, but if you call the hospital and give them permission to talk to me, I can go." I told her.
"Are you sure?" She asked me.
"Not a problem. I'll take my study stuff with me and keep him company until I can get ahold of Logan." I told her.
"Rory, you're a lifesaver. I'll call them right now and I'll text you the hospital info." Honor said.
After I hung up with Honor, I texted Logan and told him to call me as soon as he finished with his class. Then I gathered everything that I would need to take with me to the hospital, not knowing how long I'd be sitting up there. Right as I was walking out of the apartment, Honor texted me with the info that I would need for the hospital.
It didn't take long for me to get on the road. I'd called Mom and checked in with her while I was driving. She'd told me that she and Dad finally seemed to be getting settled in their new house. I told her that I'd been spending a lot of time at Logan's because I didn't like being alone at my townhouse. She asked me if I had thought about moving in with Logan since I'd been spending so much time there. I told her that I hadn't really thought about it. I was finishing up my conversation with her when Logan called in. I quickly ended my call with Mom and switched over to talk to Logan. "Hey babe." I said, when I switched over.
"Hey, I got your text what's going on?" He asked me.
"Okay, so I don't want you to freak out or anything but, your gonna wanna head to New York Pres Hospital." I told him.
"Why?" He asked.
I sighed. "Honor called me. Elias is in the hospital. Honor's stuck in California and your Dad is stuck in London, so neither of them can get back. Anyway, I told her that you were in class so I would go wait with Elias until you could get there, as long as she'd call them and give them permission to talk to me. I'm almost there now." I told him.
"And we don't know what happened?" He asked me.
I could hear the stress in his voice. "No not yet. I'll let you know when I can get in there and talk to the doctor." I told him, as I pulled into the hospital parking lot.
"Alright. I'm gonna call Frank that way we don't have two cars at the hospital, alright. I'll be there as soon as I can." He said.
"Alright babe. I love you." I said parking my car.
"I love you too, I'll see you soon." Logan said before he hung up.
I grabbed my bag out of the backseat and made my way into the hospital. I gave them Elias' name and they directed me to his room. When I walked in I couldn't believe the sight in front of me. I sat my bag in the chair and stood there and just took in the scene in front of me. I was about to call Logan when a doctor walked in. "Can I help you?" The doctor asked.
"Hi, I'm Rory Hayden. I believe that Honor Huntzberger was supposed to contact you about me coming on behalf of the family." I said.
"Yes, Ms. Hayden, hello." The doctor said.
"What happened?" I asked looking over at Elias.
"His housekeeper went to check on him and found him collapsed in his bedroom floor. We ran tests when he first came in as well as a neurological exam. It seems to me that he's had a stroke." The Doctor said.
"Any damage?" I asked him.
"We won't know until he wakes up." He said.
"Okay thank you. His grandson is on his way. He should be here in a couple of hours. I'm sure that he'll want to talk to you when he arrives." I said.
He nods. "Not a problem. Just have the nurse page me." He said.
"Thanks." I said before he walked out of the room. I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and called Logan.
"Hey, how is he?" He asked me when he answered.
"They think that he had a stroke. They're not sure if there has been any neurological damage from the stroke. The doctor said that they won't know that until Elias wakes up." I told Logan.
I heard him sigh through the phone. "Have you called Honor? Or Dad?" He asked me.
"No. I figured it wouldn't do any good until he wakes up and he get more info from the doctor." I told him.
"Your right that makes sense. Frank says that we should be there in about forty five minutes." Logan said.
"Alright. Just be careful." I told him.
"I will babe. See you soon." Logan said before he hung up.
After checking in with Logan, I got comfy in the chair and got back to studying for my test. Thank god, my test wasn't until tomorrow afternoon. Especially since I wasn't sure what time I'd make it back to campus tomorrow. I had put my headphones in and listened to some music while I studied and waited for Logan.
I guess that I had been so engrossed in my studying that I hadn't seen him come in. I had jumped when he touched my shoulder. I pulled my headphones out and looked up at him. "Hey. Sorry." He said.
"No, it's my fault. I was so focused." I told him. I put my notes and all to the side and stood up. He immediately wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into a hug.
"Thank you for being here." He told me, holding me tight.
I looked up at him. "The doctor said if you wanted to talk to him when you got here, we could have the nurse page him." I told him, he nodded.
Logan caught a nurse and asked her to page the doctor. She agreed. I told Logan that I was going to go find some coffee.
I made my way down to the cafeteria to get some coffee. After I got it, I sat down at a table to give him some time with Elias. While I was sitting there my phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out and answered it without checking the ID. "Hello?" I said quietly.
"Rory, dear." It was Grandpa Straub.
"Hi Grandpa." I said.
"We heard that Elias is in the hospital. Is everything alright?" Grandpa asked me.
I let out a sigh. "Honestly Grandpa, I don't know." I said before going on to tell him everything that I knew and had happened. "Logan is here now but we really won't know anything until Elias wakes up." I told him. "And I have to go back to campus tomorrow because I have a Poly Sci test tomorrow afternoon." I said.
"Everything will be alright dear." He told me.
"Thanks Grandpa. I should get back and check on Logan." I said before ending the call.
I made my way back upstairs to Elias' room. Logan was sitting in the chair that I had previously occupied. He had his head in his hands. I walked over to him and put my hand on his shoulder. He looked up at me. "What is it?" I asked.
"The doctor was just here. He checked Elias again and he's not sure now if Elias is even going to wake up. He said that his heart is weak from the stroke." Logan said.
"I'm so sorry Logan." I told him.
He nodded. "I called Dad. He's getting on a plane, as is Honor. Ror, I don't know what's going to happen." Logan said.
Logan POV
It had been a few days since we'd gotten the call that Elias was in the hospital. He was still hanging on. Even though he still hadn't woken up. Dad was now the one dealing with the doctors and Rory and I had gone back to Yale. Deep down I knew the way that this was going to end. Grandad was gone. I knew it.
Rory had been acting strange since that day at the hospital. I didn't know what was going on but whatever it was she hadn't said anything, mainly I think because of everything going on with Elias. I just hoped that it wasn't anything bad.
I walked into my apartment and saw Rory passed out on the couch with a textbook in her lap. I loved having her at my place. It felt like home. I loved waking up beside her and going to sleep next to her. I walked over to the coffee table and sat on it and gently woke her up. She looked over at me. "Hey." She said.
"Hey. Did you overdo it?" I asked her.
She rubbed her eyes. "Maybe. I've just been so tired lately." She said, closing her book and sitting up. "I'll be glad when winter break gets here." She told me. I couldn't agree more. I had a surprise for her and I was counting down the days until I could give it to her.
"How was your day?" I asked her.
"It was alright. Steph called and we had lunch. Umm…James has decided to transfer to Yale next semester." She told me.
"Really?" I said.
She nodded. She stood up and walked into the kitchen to start some coffee. "Yeah. He wants to stay at my townhouse until the fall when he and Steph can get an apartment nearby." She said.
Damn it James. "What did you tell him?" I asked her, while I sat at the breakfast bar and watched her move about the kitchen.
"At first I wasn't sure but then, I realized that I'm here more than I'm at my townhouse. It's two bedrooms so there's room." She said. "I mean if you don't want me here so much, I can go home." She said. I could see the gears turning in her head.
"Hey stop. I love having you here. I know that when you first got your apartment that it was mainly because of the stuff with Steph and I was living with Colin but like having you here." I said. She looked over at me and smiled.
"Good. Cause I like being here." She said.
"I actually have a surprise for you and I was gonna wait and give it to you during winter break, but you telling me about James kinda messed it up cause it's not completely finished but come here." I told her. She walked over to me and I led her to the spare bedroom that I had. I opened the door. We walked inside the room. "What do you think?" I asked her.
"What is this?" She asked me, turning to face me.
"It's your study space." I said. She turned around a took another look at the room. She saw the desk and the bookshelves that I'd put in there. She noticed the smaller table that I'd put in there with the coffee maker and everything that she need or want for her coffee. I walked up behind her and wrapped my arms around her. "I wanted you to have a quiet study space here." I told her.
"I love it." She whispered. "Thank you."
"Your welcome." I said resting my chin on her shoulder. "There's one more thing."
"What is it?" She asked.
"Move in with me." I said. Please say yes. Please say yes.
"Are you sure?" She asked me.
"I'm positive. I love you. I love waking up next to you and I love going to sleep beside you every night." I told her.
"My grandparents won't approve." She said.
"I don't care. I want you here." I said.
"Okay. Yeah." She said, turning in my arms so that she was facing me.
"Yeah?" I asked. She nodded. I quickly picked her up and she wrapped her legs around my waist. I loved having her wrapped around me. I walked out of the room and to the bedroom so that I could show her just how much I loved her.
