A/N: Alright here's the next chapter. Please don't hate me when you read this. I had to it's important. Anyway, there's a time jump in the next chapter but there are flashbacks in the coming chapters.
Chapter 16
Rory POV
My parents were in town for the weekend, so we were all having dinner at the country club. Logan and I had also decided that we were going to be telling them that we were moving in together. James had also decided to tell them that he would be transferring to Yale in January and that in the fall him and Steph would be moving in together. None of us were sure how well the family would take any of the news.
When Logan and I arrived at the country club, I suddenly felt nervous. "Everything is going to be okay." Logan told me, as we walked in.
"I know, I just don't like disappointing them. You know that." I said.
He nodded. He kissed my cheek. "I know, but they love you. I mean, I'm sure that they have seen this coming." He said.
"Your right." I said.
Logan and I made our way to the table. Everyone was already there. "I hope we're not late." I said as we approached the table.
"Nope right on time." Mom said, hugging me.
"I've missed you mom." I told her.
"Right back at ya kid." She said. Then she hugged Logan. "Hi Logan. You taking care of my baby?" She said as I sat down at the table.
"Doing my best." He said, smiling.
"Good." Mom said.
We all ordered and then there was an awkward silence at the table. Mom looked over at me. "Alright, what's going on?" She asked.
James and I shared a look. "Okay, um. I guess I'll go first. I've been staying at Logan's a good bit since school started back, it started because I was getting really tired with all the driving and then I just got used to crashing at Logan's. Well, a couple of weeks ago, James called with some news.. That I'll let him tell you…anyway, Logan made me a study space at his apartment and he asked me to move in with him." I said. I said the moving in part quietly.
"I'm sorry I didn't quite catch that last part." Grandma Francine said.
"I asked Rory to move in with me." Logan said, grabbing my hand and squeezing it gently.
"Well then." Grandma Emily said. "This isn't exactly appropriate."
Here we go. "I know how you feel grandma, but this is what I want to do. I love Logan." I said.
Grandpa Richard and Grandpa Straub shared a look. They were thinking. Then Grandpa Straub looked at us. Then he looked at James. "And your news?" He asked.
"I've decided to transfer to Yale in January. Steph and I are finding it hard to deal with the long distance of our relationship and Ror has agreed to let me stay at her townhouse until the fall when Steph and I can find an apartment because we want to live together." James said.
Grandpa Straub put his hand under his chin, thinking. I knew this look. He was trying to process. After a few minutes, he looked over at me. "You're sure that this is what you want?" He asked me.
I nodded. "It is." I said looking over at Logan before I looked back at him. "You know that Logan and I have been together for a year and we have started thinking about the future and we want to see if we have what it takes to survive." I told Grandpa.
Grandpa nodded. The waitress brought our food out. While everyone else started to eat, Grandpa and I continued to sit there and stare at each other. "You know, I had a conversation with Mitchum not too long ago. He told me that Honor is doing quite well working at HQ." Grandpa said, getting Logan's attention.
"She is. I think that she's surprised the entire family." Logan said.
"He also mentioned London to me." Grandpa said.
"Grandpa…I don't think…" I tried to say, but he put his hand up to stop me.
"Have you thought about London, Logan?" Grandpa asked me.
"I have. I've been putting a lot of thought into London. Rory moving in with me doesn't change my thoughts about London." Logan told him
Grandpa sat there and continued to look at Logan. Then I noticed that Grandpa looked over at Dad. I saw Dad give Grandpa a nod. Then Grandpa looked back at Logan. "We should play Golf this week." Grandpa said.
"Sure, sir. I'd be happy to." Logan said, without any hesitation.
"Great. Let's eat." Grandpa said.
Needless to say, I was happy that there hadn't been any bloodshed at dinner, but I was slightly confused. Logan hated playing golf. Especially, when it came to playing with the elders.
Logan POV
On the drive back to New Haven, I couldn't help but think about the conversation that had occurred. In front of Rory, no less. I just hoped that she hadn't picked up on what we were really talking about. I had essentially asked the men in her family for their blessing for me to propose to Rory. I mean, obviously I wouldn't do it anytime soon, but it was nice to know that they approved.
I knew that when I left to go to London, that I wanted Rory to go with me and that I wanted her to go as my fiance. Things had been going really well, I just hoped that nothing would screw that up.
When Rory and I walked into the apartment, she went straight to the bedroom. No doubt to change clothes. She hated having to dress up. She much preferred jeans and a t-shirt. And I loved that about her. When I got to the bedroom doorway, I leaned against the doorframe and just stood there and watched her. I could stand there and watch her all day.
That night Rory and I were laying in bed. She was sound asleep with her head on my chest when my cell rang. Rory groaned and rolled over to her other side. I reached over to the nightstand grabbed my phone quickly answering it. "Hello." I said.
"Logan." Dad said.
"Everything okay Dad?" I asked.
"Not really. It's pop. He had another stroke. Didn't make it this time." Dad said.
I sat up in the bed. "What can I do?" I asked him.
I could hear my Dad sigh through the phone. I climbed out of bed and walked into the living room. I poured myself a drink. "Honestly? I don't know Logan. Dad's gonna need a suit. You think you and Rory could go to his place in the morning and pick him out some clothes to take to the funeral home." Dad said.
I walked over and sat on the couch. "Yeah I think we can do that. Who's taking care of the Obit?" I asked him.
"Honor is. She's writing it personally." Dad said.
"Alright. We meeting at the house tomorrow evening?" I asked him, knowing how funerals worked in my family. I remembered when my grandma died.
"Yeah, at six. Your mom has already checked herself into a spa." Dad said.
Jesus. Mom couldn't even make it 24 hours before checking herself into the spa. "Don't worry Dad. We'll be there." I said before Dad hung up.
I sat there on the couch and thought about what my Dad had just said. I couldn't believe that Grandad was gone. He had been the first person in my family that had actually ended up supporting my relationship. He had been the one that had figured out that I wanted to marry Rory.
I don't know how long I had been sitting there, guess I had been lost in my thoughts, that I didn't hear Rory calling my name. It wasn't until she put a hand on my shoulder that I realized that she was there. "Hey. I thought you were sleeping." I said.
She nodded. "I was, but then I woke up and you were gone. Is everything okay?" She said.
"Dad called. Elias had another stroke. Didn't make it." I said, not even trying to form proper sentences.
"Logan, I'm so sorry." She said. "What can I do?" She asked me.
I shrugged. I grabbed her hand and pulled her into my lap. She wrapped her arms around my neck. "Dad wants us to go to Elias' place in the morning and pick him out some clothes to take to the funeral home." I told her.
She leaned down and kissed me. "We'll get it done babe. Come on, let's go back to bed.
I nodded. Rory stood up from my lap pulling me with her and we headed back to bed even if just for a few hours.
