Chapter 20
Rory POV
Mom had finally gotten the dinner set up with the families. She'd decided to have it at hers and Dad's Hartford house. Mainly giving her a reason to spend a little bit of time in Hartford. I think that she knew what my news was. Just like I knew that if I asked her, she'd help me pack up the townhouse and the apartment.
When Logan and I arrived at my parents house, I noticed that we were the first ones to arrive. "Why are we early?" Logan asked me.
"Because I want to have a drink with my mother before everyone arrives." I told him.
"Okay, that makes sense. Are we telling them everything tonight?" He asked me.
"I figured we would. No time like the present, plus everyone will already be together." I said, climbing out of the car.
"Yeah your right." He said.
We walked up to the front door and I walked in. "Mom! We're here." I yelled walking in.
"Living room." She said.
I walked into the living room to greet mom. "Hey." I said as I sat on the couch across from Mom while Logan went to fix me a drink.
"How you doing kid?" She asked me.
"I'm good. Just ready to get this dinner over with." I said.
"That bad? Or that much?" She asked me.
"That much. That and it's about to be a busy couple of weeks. Any chance of you staying in Hartford until graduation?" I asked.
"Possibly. Your Dad's been busy with the new firm and since I don't know anybody in Boston, I told him that I might come stay in Hartford till you guys graduate." Mom said.
Logan walked over and handed me my drink and then sat beside me. I took a drink and we waited.
It was a little while later when everyone arrived. Logan and I hadn't moved from our spot on the couch, while we watched everyone come in. I had told mom that tonight would be a night for Champagne. Once everyone was situated in the living room, Mom had Marissa (our maid) pass out glasses. I noticed that Steph looked a little nervous that her parents had been invited. James kept shooting looks like he wanted to kill Logan.
Once everyone had a glass, Logan and I stood up. "First of all, I wanted to thank everyone for coming tonight and I want to thank my parents for hosting everyone this evening. I will try to be quick so that we can get to dinner because I'm sure that everyone is hungry." I said in my best society voice. Now onto the reason for this gathering. I've decided on my choice for law school. I've decided that I'll be attending Oxford in the fall." I told everyone. There were a few whispers around the room. "Meaning that I will be joining my fiance in London." I said, waiting for everyone to realize what I'd just said.
"Did you say fiance?" I heard Mom and Honor ask at the same time.
Logan wrapped an arm around my waist as I nodded. "Yeah. When we were in London, Logan proposed and I said yes." I said.
Everyone approached us and congratulated us. Well, everyone except for Shira, but that wasn't really a surprise. Once everyone had settled back down, it was time for my final announcement. "I have one more announcement to make." I said, as Logan sat back down, knowing that I wanted to make this one by myself. "I figured that since announcements were being made tonight that there was one announcement in particular that needed to be made." I said as I walked towards the drink cart that my father kept in the corner of the room.
"Well, don't keep us in suspense." Mom said.
"I'm getting there, Mom." I poured myself a little bit of Dad's scotch into a glass and turned to face everyone. "I thought that it was only fitting that we also celebrate James and Steph's marriage." I said, downing the drink.
"What?" All of the elder women in the room said at the same time.
"It's not true, is it?" Mrs. Vanderbuilt asked.
"I don't know, is it Steph?" I asked.
Steph stood up and turned toward me. "How?" She asked me.
"Oh, that's easy. Don't discuss secrets in public places." I said. I walked back over to the couch that Logan and I had been sitting on and sat back beside him. He grabbed my hand and gently squeezed it.
Steph had started crying. Her mom and mine started yelling at the two, wanting to know why they'd kept it a secret.
James had tried to yell at me and call me a bitch but Logan had stopped him.
The Grandma's talked about embarrassment on the families.
Steph tried to apologize to me about not telling me.
After an hour of everyone yelling, Steph's parents, Logan's parents, Honor and Josh, and the Grandparents had left. The only ones that remained were my parents, Logan and I, and James and Steph. Nobody said anything for a while. "Are you happy with yourself?" James finally asked me.
"You're the one keeping secrets." I said.
"Am I?" He said.
"What is that supposed to mean?" I asked.
"Think about it." He said.
"I didn't lie about moving in with Logan. When I made that announcement, it was the truth. It had just happened that week. Before that…I was just staying there and you know it?" I said.
"That's not what I was talking about." James said.
There was only one other secret that James had known about and I guess he was planning on telling it. "Your being dramatic." I said.
"Am I? Was I the freaking out, when Steph and I had to drive you to the hospital at 3 in the morning?" He said.
Logan looked at me. "What's he talking about?" Logan asked me.
I let out a sigh. "That first summer, you know the one that we spent majority apart?" I said and he nodded. "I had a minor situation." I said.
"What kind of situation?" He asked.
"A few days after you left, I was at the townhouse in Hartford. I'm not exactly sure what happened but when I woke up, I was at the hospital with Steph and James. I found out that I had been pregnant." I said thinking back.
***Flashback***
I woke up feeling groggy. "Ugh." I said.
"Take it easy." I heard James say.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Steph and I came home and found you unconscious in your bedroom floor. We called an ambulance. You're in the hospital." He said.
"Well, find me a doctor or a nurse." I told him.
A few minutes later, a nurse came in. "Welcome back, Ms. Hayden."
"Thanks…I think. What happened?" I asked.
"You fainted. Your blood pressure elevated but that was most likely due to the miscarriage." The nurse said checking my vitals.
"Miscarriage?" I asked.
"Yes. You were six weeks pregnant. Did you not know?" She said.
I shook my head. "No." I said quietly. "No, I didn't."
"I'm sorry. We're gonna get you some fluids and antibiotics just to make sure that there isn't an infection and then you can get out of here." She said.
"Thanks." I said.
***End of Flashback***
"You had a miscarriage?" Logan asked me. I nodded. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"What good would it have done? Our baby was gone. You were with your Dad working. I didn't want to burden you." I said.
He grabbed my hand and kissed it. "Listen to me, you are never a burden… do you hear me?" He asked me.
I gave him a small smile. "Yes, dear. I hear you." I said.
The rest of the night had been tiring. We'd managed to get things off our chest that had needed to be said for a long time. Mom had decided to stay in Hartford until after Logan and I got moved to London. She was even going to come with us and help us unpack. I was excited. It had been a while since we'd gotten to spend any real time together.
